Hi Shirley! How are you doing - I remember we are practically "neighbors"
since I live in Truckee most of the year..

I have never "heard" of any sibs for grandfather Mello or grandmother Maria -
I just remember hearing snips of conversations between my Mom and Dad about his
youth -

  1. talked about enormous amount of siblings and how fat grandma got, but no
mention of his aunts and uncles.

  2. I found (and unfortunately do not have that paperwork printed off here in
So. Cal) a record of a 15 yr old stowaway by the name of Mello - in 1881of
course, how do I prove that person is my grandpa?

  3. I'll have to look at the 1890 HI census -- I know I found the family in
Hawaii on the later census. They were in Hilo for awhile but my dad was born
in Honokaa - of course, I do not have a birth certificate or any tangible
evidence such as church records as I cannot access them online.

  4. Very little info on grandma - do not have any written docs on their
marriage. Most is from census.

Question- where does the name Fregoso come from? Is it like the Spanish
where they use the mother's maiden name as the son's middle name? I don't
know.

When I get back to Truckee, I should pack up all I have and come see you --
you are so well versed in doing this. Yes, come and see me. I will be
waiting. Let me know when you are coming so that I will be home.

If he was born in 1866, and went to Hawaii in about 1881, he would have been
about 15 years old.
I am looking at Bob de Mello's book that shows immigrants to Hawaii
1879-1883. There are about ten pages of MELLOs.
Do you know of any siblings for Manuel Fragoso de Melo? I can look through
the pages and try to find him.
Have you looked at the 1890 Census in Hawaii? That might help.
Do you know where he lived in Hawaii? Or was born?

Hi! My maiden name is Mello - my grandfather's name was Manuel Fregoso
Mello. He was born on one of the Azorean islands in 1866! I believe he
emigrated to Hawaii in 1881 where he married Maria Medeiros abt 1888/9.
Records a little shaky. I understand the name Mello was so common in Hawaii
the family was using Fregoso as their surname while there for a timethat
could just be a family story..Most of the 16 kids were born in Hawaii, as
was my father, Ernest Mello in 1901!

Don't know how common Fragoso/Fregoso was in Azores..
