Do I read correctly that Estevão's father is João Alvares? And what is his

I'm following the paternal line António Cabral -> Estevão Alvares -> João

You wouldn't happen to have any more information on that line?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with reading a marriage record Raposo, Mosteiros

2014-06-30 Thread IslandRoutes
Cheri,
I understand what you mean. You probably noticed the "Manual" spelling
throughout the book. I appreciate what Demello did by indexing these
records, but I always go to the original because he made little errors.

Also, some might not realized that just because an entry appears in
Demello's book that the family actually came to Hawaii. I've found people
that did not go to Hawaii, but years later went to Massachusetts.

I do not see where he got "deceased" and I have to try to figure out why
Manoel Raposo, himself, listed his father as having the same name as him.
For that manner, why he and his alleged brother took the surnames Raposo.
If they are brothers, it is confusing that at the same time Manoel named a
father in his passport, Francisco Raposo listed his as Pai Incognito. If
only our ancestors kept diaries!

I'm not knocking Bob De Mello, but at the time he did his passaportes to
Hawaii book, he made some assumptions that he carried throughout the book.
I don't think his grasp of the Portuguese language was all that good. So
he may have assumed that no father listed meant that the father had died.

So unless you can find your Manuel leaving the Azores in the Azorean
passaportes, I'd really question the father being deceased. They always
named the father and then said deceased after his name.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with reading a record

2014-04-09 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Margaret,

You are correct everyone that is baptized in the Catholic church is
exorcised as part of the Sacrament of Baptism. In a baptism conducted at
home (under danger of death) it is done by a lay person (grandmother,
midwife etc. and as such they cannot perform the exorcism part of the
ceremony. It would make sense that later when the baby is brought to the
church, that is performed by the priest and the entry made in the church
register.

Hi,

Every child or adult that is baptized is also exorcised. Before the baptism
there is the exorcism. Any baptized Catholic has been exorcised. All rushed
baptisms performed in the homes were later on completed in the church by the
priest's performing the exorcism and applying the holy oils.

Exorcism is a symbolic cleansing by verbal affirmation of acceptance of
faith and renunciation of all that is not of G-d spoken by the Godparents
and all others attending on behalf of the child and in response to the
Priest's questions.

The action of exorcism is not tied in to an era. It is part of each baptism
of the Catholic church. First the cleansing, 2nd the anointment with the
oils, and third the name giving and dipping of water.

Hope this helps.

I wonder if the baby was epileptic and having a seizure? Or born with a
deformity that was considered demonic? Maybe the ears of the baby were kind
of pointed and the eyebrows somewhat arched? But I'm thinking of *modern*
illustrations of Satan. Don't know what they thought Satan looked like in
the very early 1700s.

2014-04-08 Thread Dano

Hi Margaret, that is an excellent explanation. As for my earlier remarks,
this was the first time that I encountered the mention of exorcism in what
should have a baptism, and I was taken aback. We don't know what the
condition of the child was, but, it must have been grave, for the parents
to take the day old child to the church to be baptized. Once again thanks
for your explanation - it does correspond to what I was taught so many
years ago...

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with reading a record

2014-04-08 Thread Dano
That is a pretty good article, Cheri, however, it is quite general, and
doesn't deal with infants and baptism. The best explanation in this case
that I've seen, is posted by Margaret, and does correspond w/ what I've
been taught. I think your example of a baby that perhaps was ill w/
seizures or somewhat deformed is particularly on point, in that such
illnesses and deformities were often attributed to the work of the devil. I
believe that any parent who had a child that may have been weak, or in
danger of dying, would seek out the help of G-d, since medical help wasn't
a reality. Did I mention that this baptism was performed in the late 1600's?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with reading a record

2014-04-08 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hi,

Every child or adult that is baptized is also exorcised. Before the
baptism there is the exorcism. Any baptized Catholic has been exorcised.
All rushed baptisms performed in the homes were later on completed in the
church by the priest's performing the exorcism and applying the holy oils.

Exorcism is a symbolic cleansing by verbal affirmation of acceptance of
faith and renunciation of all that is not of G-d spoken by the Godparents
and all others attending on behalf of the child and in response to the
Priest's questions.

The action of exorcism is not tied in to an era. It is part of each
baptism of the Catholic church. First the cleansing, 2nd the anointment
with the oils, and third the name giving and dipping of water.

Hope this helps.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with reading a record

2014-04-08 Thread Dano
*I'm not sure - I stated such in my "attempted" translation of the record.
I didn't make up the term - it was written in the narrative, and the
margin, on the baptismal record. It was listed as an impediment (or not, as
the margin was not all that informative). The use of that term both in the
margin and the body of the document was troubling to me, considering that
this was a baptism of a day old infant.*

*So, without going into the minutia, I believe it means is that baptism was
considered to be a form of exorcism in church doctrine, and, may have been
recorded as such, by some of the church's ministers, during a certain
period, in some church records. This record was from a place that I haven't
researched previously, and, therefore, I am not versed in the norms of that
period, in that place, by those particular individuals. I, personally, have
not ever seen the term used in this manner, but, my 9 years of parochial
school education provided some insight as to how it may have
been interpreted. Perhaps, you can enlighten us as to the true meaning of
the document.*
