Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Understanding towns of Portugal and if they are part of azores
Hi John, Yes, Mary Martins, was Msgn. Martin's niece. Mary has died. Her brother, is an attorney in Hayward, Ed. Martins. I believe he is still involved with the school for children in the village where Mary's parents were born. When Msgn. Martins died, Mary and Ed. began a day care and school for the children from the village of Ligares, Tras-os-Montes. This village is where my maternal grandfather was born. If you are interested in the center, it is now also a center for the seniors of the village, here is Ed's phone #. 510 537 3477. I do not know if he has email or not. Ligares is a very remote village almost to the Spanish border. I have visited there and I know I walked on the same rocks my grandfather did. The reason the school was build was that the working age residents left the village to find work in Cities and even other countries. In addition to the school, the center also cares for the seniors in need of care. I think if you contact Ed., he can give you all the information you want about the village. A few years ago, she was listed in the Cal Alumni Magazine as involved in a school for children in mainland Portugal. I contacted her by email at that time and she said that she indeed had been involved in such an undertaking but I didn't ask for any details. She must be the niece. There are a lot of very small villages in those mountains. The only reason I was able to locate Ligares was that a day care center and now a senior facility was built there by monsignor Martins nephew and niece. Ligares does not have a school and the nuns that ran the daycare and now senior center taught the children to read. The first time I visited Ligares was in 1989. There were a lot of children and their grandparents in the village. The parents were working in distant cities and even distant countries because there was no work in the village (except picking almonds). The sister that ran the center told me that the kids were socially retarded because they only had the old people taking care of them. The US equivalent of Tras os Montes is actually a state. And they've listed some of the information in the wrong order So: Tras os Montes=province where his village is found Boticas: municipality Vilarinho Seco: village Alturas was likely the specific neighborhood/street he lived on, but that's difficult to pinpoint without more information Google: Vilarinho Seco Boticas Select "images" and you'll see some *amazing* photos of what the village looks like today Sonia From: azores@googlegroups.com on behalf of Cheri Mello Sent: Sunday, April 8, 2018 2:38:56 PM To: Azores Genealogy Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Understanding towns of Portugal and if they are part of azores Hi Holly, That's the mainland. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Understanding towns of Portugal and if they are part of azores
Celeste, I too have visited and have relatives from Ligares! Perhaps we could explore any possible connections. My great-grandfather is buried in their small cemetery by the church. Many are in unmarked graves but his had his picture included. I also have a branch in Peredo, a small village down the road. I’d love to exchange information. c1memail-...@yahoo.com Carole > On Apr 8, 2018, at 2:54 PM, 'celeste perry' via Azores Genealogy > wrote: > > > Holly, my maternal grandfather was born in a very small village, Ligares, > that is in > Tras-os-Montes. Holly, my maternal grandfather was born in a very small village, Ligares, that is in Tras-os-Montes. The location is as Cheri posted.
