Edit the settings to choose your UK placename - it's nice and small,
and uses the official BBC weather feed.
Clicking the name of the place you've chosen will bring up the full
page from the BBC Weather website.

Coded in PHP, using the SimplePie library for RSS feeds.

SVG weather feeds: who to ask?

Who at the BBC publishes the weather feeds?

Is there a good reason the SVG icons are not linked within the feed?

Re: [backstage] Fwd: who to ask: SVG in weather feeds?

2007-09-02 Thread Adam
That doesn't work as they are sending a PNG file to all browsers which
is pointless as i might as well just not bother.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e8/Svg_example3.svg/467px-Svg_example3.svg.png

Okay, so SVG is great for resizing image, but for icons i can't see
any advantage of having them working when 80% of the time you would
need to send an Jpeg/Gif/PNG image.

I currently have to spend enough time working around bugs in all the
browsers, i don't really want to add another problem to the mix.

I was pointing out that you could, in theory, detect if SVGs could be
displayed and then use a backend process - a la wikipedia - to provide a PNG
otherwise. Easy to do in Javascript...

Okay, so SVG is great for resizing image, but for icons i can't see

Most browsers have a nice "zoom" facility which renders text at better
resolution but resamples images...

Is there a public domain SVG->PNG? If so, *I* would be happy to sort the
client code..

awaiting your response on both these issues:

the discrepancy between symbols and labels on the feed

where are the BBC's SVG weather icons and might the RSS feeds use them?

For relatively little overhead the BBC's RSS feed could add links to

almost everything I publish is public domain, however my SVG feed

due to the relatively long delays these matters can have, I produced

Re: [backstage] Release: BBC Weather iGoogle gadget

2007-09-02 Thread James Cridland
Well, as a thought... if you add-by-URL
http://james.cridland.net/code/bbcnews.php then you'll get a BBC News
iGoogle gadget. It's quite pretty, I think. It scrapes
http://news.bbc.co.uk/text_only.stm and rewrites the linking URLs, so you
get the natty pictures.

Now - I think this is against the news copyright message, which states... "you
are not permitted to ... adapt or change in any way the content of these BBC
web pages for any other purpose whatsoever without the prior written
permission of the BBC."

Similarly, the main site's copyright message states "You may not ... use
bbc.co.uk content in any way except for your own personal, non-commercial
use. You also agree not to adapt, alter or create a derivative work from any
bbc.co.uk content except for your own personal, non-commercial use."

I don't think I can use the nicer graphics for the weather map; and that my
iGoogle BBC News gadget can't be released for others to use, therefore.

Anyone disagree?

RE: [backstage] Release: BBC Weather iGoogle gadget

2007-09-02 Thread Christopher Woods
It's both personal and non-commercial, so what's the problem? After all, due
to the unique way in which the BBC is funded...

Well, as a thought... if you add-by-URL
http://james.cridland.net/code/bbcnews.php then you'll get a BBC News
iGoogle gadget. It's quite pretty, I think. It scrapes
http://news.bbc.co.uk/text_only.stm and rewrites the linking URLs, so you
get the natty pictures.

Now - I think this is against the news copyright message, which states... "
you are not permitted to ... adapt or change in any way the content of these
BBC web pages for any other purpose whatsoever without the prior written
permission of the BBC."

Every chance, but I'm unclear of whether we're allowed to.

Edit the settings to choose your UK placename - it's nice and small, and
uses the official BBC weather feed.
Clicking the name of the place you've chosen will bring up the full page
from the BBC Weather website.

Coded in PHP, using the SimplePie library for RSS feeds.

Presumably the point of backstage is to identify those items that can be
provided with written permission???

It would be handy if the "scraping" was doable, because I'm writing a PAJAX
system to allow fast searching and monitoring of the BBC News website and it
would be nice if it could be put to some use. I'm just doing it as a PHP
with AJAX primer right now..

I'm also keen to get hold of the "generic minutes" that BBC News radio
reporters submit too... I have a great idea for a "breaking news"
gadget...

Similarly, the main site's copyright message states "You may not ... use

It's non-commercial, but is it personal?
