Sure, using includes/excludes you can specify precisely what files/
directories you want backed up. See the $Conf{BackupFilesOnly}
setting: http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/faq/

Thank you for your quick reply.
I know and I use include/exclude (only exclude really) directories.
What I want to achieve is not changing the regular backup, which is the
whole machine, but only archiving part of it.
In other words, backup the whole machine but only archive two directories.
Thanks!

You can archive just one share if you want. So you can configure your
host with two shares
- the whole machine (including or excluding the part you want to
archive, as you want)
- the part you wan't to archive only

then, specify on the command line which share you want to archive (with
the -s option)

You can also create a virtual host, which point to the real host you
want (with $Conf{ClientNameAlias}) and that you can configure with
different share(s).

Dear Stian,

The user backuppc is in /etc/passwd and not in the LDAP directory.
Also pam_min_uid has not been set, it is commented out in
/etc/ldap.conf. Since you say it works for you, I'm wondering if there
is anything that gets checked when BackupPC is executed with the -d
option? Since I can execute /usr/bin/BackupPC fine as user backuppc
but /usr/bin/BackupPC -d, doesn't work, I'm wondering what the
difference is...

In regards to the settings I'm using :

/etc/ldap.conf (pam_ldap.conf/libnss_ldap.conf in other distros??) - the
bulk of the options are commented out except for these :

host ldap.naturesoft.net
base dc=naturesoft,dc=net
pam_filter objectclass=inetOrgPerson
pam_check_host_attr yes
pam_password exop
ssl start_tls
nss_reconnect_tries 4 # number of times to double the

nss_reconnect_sleeptime 1 # initial sleep value
nss_reconnect_maxsleeptime 16 # max sleep value to cap at
nss_reconnect_maxconntries 2# how many tries before sleeping

I'd recommend manually running the smbclient command and pipe
the output into tar tvf - so you can see how far it gets
and perhaps where it hangs.

You might try running WinXX chkdsk on the client. You might
also try disabling your AV software to see if that makes a
difference.

Craig

Thank you for your help. After your mail, I did several tests
- I ran chkdsk C: /f and chkdsk D: /f That's OK
- I did'nt now how to running the smbclient command and pipe
the output into tar tvf -,
then I did:
smbclient //pc/share -Uuser%passwwd
tarmode full
tar c /dev/null
Every time, I had Call timed out: server did not respond after 2000
milliseconds

So, I upgraded from samba-3.0.10 to samba-3.0.24 : Same time out
So, I modified the timeout in samba (source/libsmb, file clientgen.c
and libsmbclient.c)
Then time out is now: 200 sec.
Now Last error is Call timed out: server did not respond after
20 milliseconds

smbclient give me the name of the file.
I verified the rigth upon this file. Owner has Control Total.
The size is 7,8 Mo.

I didn't desactive the AV software because its difficult and dangerous.

Please, could you tell me
- does it exist a max size for the files (or the directories) to be
backupped ?

  Hi List
As stated in the README.Debian, I tried to move my DATADIR to a remote
location : A Windows machine wich sees its content backed up daily by corporate
backup system.
I created a backuppc folder on the samba share and made a symbolic link
in /var/lib to that folder.
Samba share is correctly mounted as backuppc user, so all files are owned
by the linux backuppc user.
The issue : BackupPC server cannot start. I get this line in logs --

Has anyone managed to do this already ?

Yes, it should. I should probably make it a run-time test too - actually
create a test hardlink and quit if it fails. I should also do that in
BackupPC_dump to make sure that the pc/HOST directory and cpool are on
the same file system.

[BackupPC-users] cross backups (gentoo - WinXP)

2007-06-18 Thread Wojtek Swiatek
Greetings,

I am a newbie in BackupPC but so far so good - everything works fine.
I backup a laptop (WinXP) on a desktop (gentoo).
I now would like to try doing cross backups and am looking for some
guidance to avoid reinventing the wheel.

My goal is to back up on my laptop some parts of the desktop when the
laptop is available on the network (say, /etc to be backed up in
C:\SERVER_BACKUP\etc).
In other words, the backup store for desktop (which also hosts
BackupPC) should be on the WinXP laptop.

Is there a straightforward way to achieve this? I would be grateful for
any pointers.

Thank you,
Wojtek

 example

Usually you set the BlackoutPeriods to the times you don't want backups run
(under the 'Schedule' in the conf editor) and 'MaxBackups (under the
'Server'
settings) for how many can run concurrently, and let backuppc decide what
order to run them.

 pool : full count : 2

This is 'FullKeepCnt' under 'Schedule', but you'll also keep any fulls
needed
as backing for incrementals.

  incremental count : 4

This is 'IncrKeepCnt'.

Note that the defaults aren't bad for most people if most of the machines
you back up are on all the time so backups can run at night. If they aren't
you may want to encourage people to use the web interface to start their
own backups at a convenient time and end the blackout early enough to
catch everyone who doesn't.
