 Do you have strace? strace -p process_id should show you any system

 it is doing. Or you can start a program with strace to see how far it
 gets.

I installed strace and then tried
strace /usr/local/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_serverMesg status info

--- begin quote -
The last few lines of the output were:
open(/etc/passwd, O_RDONLY)   = 3

Then the output did not continue until I pressed Ctrl-C.

Unfortunately I do not know enough about system calls to be able to interpret
the output. As much as I understand, the output just confirms that BackupPC
does not succeed in reading the Server's Seed.

Or do you see something else in the output that could give me a hint?

[BackupPC-users] Still having problems with BackupPC

2009-08-26 Thread Jeremy Mann
I'm still having severe bandwidth issues causing are once nightly backups
to take days to finish with BackupPC. I am monitoring one server right now
by tailing the NewFileList log file in its pc directory. What I'd expect
to see are filenames flying by, but no, it just goes by maybe 1 file every
minute or so. Then occasionally there's a spurt of maybe 10 file names.

Right now, the logfile is hung and hasn't had any output in the last 5
minutes. Just what is BackupPC doing during this time?

On the BackupPC server, top shows an idle load and the BackupPC daemons
aren't even at the top of the list.

I thought this would solve our storage problem, but I'm afraid I cannot
spend more time on this. I'm going to revert back to our old rsync
scripts.

Re: [BackupPC-users] Installation problems: BackupPC_serverMesg hangs

2009-08-26 Thread Christoph
 Craig

Wow, the author himself, what an honour!

 It's more likely that TCP sockets work.

 Try setting $Conf{ServerHost}, $Conf{ServerPort} and
 $Conf{ServerMesgSecret}.  BackupPC_serverMesg should
 use the TCP port instead of the unix-domain socket.

I set:
$Conf{ServerHost} = 'nslu2';
$Conf{ServerPort} = 2359;
$Conf{ServerMesgSecret} = 'a string containing 19 ascii-characters';
# 'nslu2' is the device's hostname, also contained in /etc/hosts

and restarted the BackupPC daemon.

Unfortunately,
/usr/local/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_serverMesg status info
shows the same result, hanging at the same line as before.

Strangely, 'netstat' shows me:
Proto RefCnt Flags Type State I-Node Path
unix  4  [ ] STREAM CONNECTING 0
/mnt/usbstick/var/log/BackupPC/BackupPC.sock
unix  3  [ ] STREAM CONNECTED  21002

so it seems that BackupPC still uses unix sockets.

Do I have to do anything else to activate tcp connections?

Thanks in advance,
Christoph

You need to separate the xfer method from the storage to understand this. With
tar or smb methods, the entire contents of a full are transfered. With rsync
or
rsyncd, this is a delta against the previous full (or incrementals if using
levels) but if any content has changed in a file, a complete new copy is
reconstructed on the backuppc server side. Then, regardless of the method, all
content that matches a file in the pool is discarded and replaced with a
hardlink - and all new/changed files have a new link added to the pool (there
are no per-file deltas stored).

Thanks Les,

Yes, I meant this with reference to rsync/rsyncd.

Just going back to my previous query about SQL dumps and my daily backups
transferring the whole lot, I now realise that the last full backup was done
when the system was under test and I had not yet included the SQL dump
folder. The dump folder (700MB) was then picked up by the first incremental
and has been transferred ever since because, as I now know, same-level
incremental deltas are done against the last full backup and not between
incrementals.

If my understanding is correct, I presume I should then see a marked
reduction in the size of incrementals after the next full backup?

Nigel

[BackupPC-users] No emails being sent for backup failures

2009-08-26 Thread txoof

Backuppc is configured to send email for all hosts to one gmail account. All
email sent to the attention of the administrator as well as each host's email
is sent to the foo@gmail.com account. That is to say, the USER field is set
to foo@gmail.com for ALL 20 of the hosts. This was a decision we made to
avoid nagging our clients too much.

The following emails have successfully come through to the gmail account:
* Test emails
* Administrative attention needed for bogus directories
* No backups of hostname have succeeded - for hosts that have NEVER ONCE
succeeded.

The problem arises when backups have been delayed for a client. There is one
client that is rarely on the network. It has been about 16 days since the last
time it was backed up. Backups happen when it is attached to the network, but
I have never received an email from this client indicating that it has been
more than 3 days since the last backup.

On that host's summary page I see the following:

* This PC is used by esybac...@gmail.com (and michalski).
* Last email sent to esybac...@gmail.com was at 8/24 01:01, subject
BackupPC: no recent backups on a82f06-michalsk.
* Last status is state idle (no ping) as of 8/26 07:00.
* Last error is host not found.
* Pings to a82f06-michalsk have failed 170 consecutive times.

I have EMailNotifyMinDays 2.5 set so I should be getting an email about every 3
days indicating a problem. If I look at the email summary page I see the
following:

Recipient: esybac...@gmail.com
Host: a82f06-michalsk
Time: 8/24 01:01
Subject: BackupPC: no recent backups on a82f06-michalsk

This indicates to me that the checking subsystem is working properly and that,
in general, the email system is working properly. The problem appears to be
with only the delayed backup emails. What might be causing this problem?
Where should I start looking for the source of this problem?

Thanks for your help!

 Short answer:
 No.

 Long answer:
 this has been hashed over many times on this mailing list (and yes,
the
 sourceforge search mechanism is useless). basically; the number of
hardlinks
 kills rsync because of memory consumption; the only way to do it
sanely is
 somewhere around the hardware or filesystem level. Basically you need
to
 have the hardware or the filesystem replicate your data for you.

 The best way to do this is to set up your offsite backup server to
back up
 your machines completely independently. This sucks a lot of bandwidth;
but
 on the other hand does provide a fully redundant system, so even if
your
 onsite backup server goes down your offsite server will keep going.

 Perhaps a future version of BackupPC will support offsite replication
as
 part of its mechanisms.

You probably could play some tricks with replicating the configs if your

concern is maintaining changes on the independent servers. They are
just ordinary files.

 It turns out the code always tries the unix
 domain socket first.

I used the bogus name for the sockFile method, hence:
my $sockFile = $bpc-{LogDir}/BackupPC.sockNot;

Now BackupPC obviously uses tcp, because after launching the
BackupPC_serverMesg command, netstat shows:
tcp0  0 nslu2.:2359 nslu2.:41584ESTABLISHED
tcp0  0 nslu2.:41584nslu2.:2359 ESTABLISHED

But then the execution hangs at the same line as before:
BackupPC::Lib::ServerConnect(/mnt/usbstick/usr/local/BackupPC/lib/BackupPC/Lib.pm:698):
698:sysread($bpc-{ServerFD}, $bpc-{ServerSeed}, 1024);

strace shows that again the execution hangs when trying to make the read()
system call:
read(3,

So it seems that the problem is the same with the tcp connection as with the
unix socket.

Do you have any further idea what the problem could be?

Does anybody know why the read() system call might hang?

Christoph

Michael - I have a new LInux/FreeBSD backup program, HashBackup, in
beta that I believe will handle a large backuppc server. In tests, it
will backup a single directory with 15M (empty) files/hardlinks, with
32000 hard links to each file, and can do the initial and incremental
backups on this directory in about 45 minutes on a 2005 AMD box with
1GB of memory.

HashBackup can also send backups offsite via FTP, ssh accounts, or to
Amazon S3. I'd be very interested in feedback if anyone would like to
try it on their BackupPC server.

The beta site is:

http://sites.google.com/site/hashbackup

Of course, you're welcome to contact me via email with questions.

 I'm speculating again, but I can't help thinking that it might be RAM
 related... Before launching any BackupPC processes, how much RAM is free?

After a reboot I got the following values:

Before launching any BackupPC process:

  total used free   shared  buffers
  Mem:3041221884 85280 9480
 Swap:   5005080   500508
Total:   53092021884   509036

After launching '/etc/init.d/backuppc start':

  total used free   shared  buffers
  Mem:3041227392 30200 7540
 Swap:   5005080   500508
Total:   53092027392   503528

After launching '/usr/local/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_serverMesg status info':

  total used free   shared  buffers
  Mem:3041229228 11840 4932
 Swap:   5005080   500508
Total:   53092029228   501692

Seems that swap space isn't even needed. I am astonished, too, because free
shows 24, 22, and 16% memory usage by the three BackupPC processes, whereas
the above figures seem to show that the BackupPC processes just need
additional 7,5 MB which is less than 25% of the device's 32MB RAM.

Strange, isn't it?

 Perhaps you could google for perl bugs on your platform?

That's what I've already been doing for some time - up to now without any

I even recompiled the perl packages - without any errors.

I just cannot understand why it works for Ted Carnahan:

I will try to get further tomorrow - today I have to go to bed at last.

Thanks for your help,

1. Backslashes (\) seem to be the only effective way to get smbclient to

2009-08-26 Thread phil
Hello,

for a small office with 2 PCs I would like to setup a samba and
backup-server (using backuppc).

I'm running BackupPC on three other servers (Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz).

Since I have an unused Pentium III running at 900 MHz and 512 MB RAM I
would like to know, if this small machine can be used as a BackupPC-Server.

Why: It is very quiet and has a nice form factor.

Any feedback?

Kind regards

   'c$' = [
 '/program files',
 '/axium',
 '/i386',
 '/drivers',
 '/dell',
 '/temp',
 '/Documents and Settings/*/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files',
 '/windows'
   ]
 };

 So, what is wrong here?

Not an expert, so this is just a guess . . . have you tried a backslash after
a word preceding a space?

So /Program\ Files
and /Documents\ and\ Settings/*/Local\ Settings/Temporary\ Internet\ Files

also be aware of capitalization.

Re: [BackupPC-users] Excludes not working

2009-08-26 Thread Mark Maciolek
hi,

I believe the / are in the wrong direction; from my system.pl file

$Conf{XferMethod} = 'smb';
$Conf{BackupFilesExclude} = {
   '*' = [
 '\\Program Files\\Legato',
 '\\Documents and Settings\\NetworkService\\NTUSER.DAT',
 '\\WINDOWS\\system32\\config'
   ]
};
$Conf{SmbShareName} = [
   'C$',
   'E$'
];

 You misunderstand the exclude syntax. Here's an example for a (SMB) share
 named 'c$':

 $Conf{BackupFilesExclude} = {
'c$' = [
 '/RECYCLER',
 '/winnt/tmp',
 '/temp',
 '/WUTemp',
 '/WINDOWS',
 '/Documents and Settings/*/Local Settings/Temporary Internet
Files/',
 '/Documents and Settings/*/Local Settings/history/',
 '/Documents and Settings/*/Cookies/',
 '/Documents and Settings/*/Favorites/',
 '/Documents and Settings/*/IETldCache/',
 '/Documents and Settings/*/IECompatCache/',
 '/Documents and Settings/*/NetHood/',
 '/Documents and Settings/*/PrivacIE/',
 '/Documents and Settings/*/PrintHood/',
 '/pagefile.sys',
 '/hiberfil.sys',
 ]
};

hmm ... I'm having some problems with smb-tar excludes, too (my first
smb client because of never ending VISTA 64-bit related issues with
DeltaCopy and/or cygwin-rsyncd) and I read on:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/backuppc/index.php?title=Smb_exclude

1. Backslashes (\) seem to be the only effective way to get smbclient
to correctly exclude files.
2. Subfolders need to be followed by a \* to be correctly excluded.
3. Files off of the root of the share need to be prepended by an extra
backslash to be correctly excluded.
4. Folders off of the root of the share need to be prepended by an
extra backslash to be correctly excluded.

Maybe I should try it your way then ... ;-)

I backup Windows Vista without a problem with Deltacopy. I mainly followed
one of the wiki pages to exclude the 'junction points'. There is more stuff
than necessary in the one I list below, but I can't find the Wiki pages
(what happened there?)

Ah, here is the link to the specific page for Vista
www.cs.umd.edu/~cdunne/projs/backuppc_guide.html

Also mind the {ClientCharset}.
