[BackupPC-users] A Question on full backups
Hi, I have had a read, but I am none the wiser... I understand that incremental backups are hard-linked delta copies based on the last full backup, but when a new full backup is performed, is this done as a complete new transfer, or are full backups also built from deltas of the last full backup and/or incrementals? [BackupPC-users] Still having problems with BackupPC
I'm still having severe bandwidth issues causing are once nightly backups to take days to finish with BackupPC. I am monitoring one server right now by tailing the NewFileList log file in its pc directory. What I'd expect to see are filenames flying by, but no, it just goes by maybe 1 file every minute or so. Then occasionally there's a spurt of maybe 10 file names. Right now, the logfile is "hung" and hasn't had any output in the last 5 minutes. Just what is BackupPC doing during this time? On the BackupPC server, top shows an idle load and the BackupPC daemons aren't even at the top of the list. I thought this would solve our storage problem, but I'm afraid I cannot spend more time on this. I'm going to revert back to our old rsync scripts. -- Jeremy Mann jer...@biochem.uthscsa.edu University of Texas Health Science Center Bioinformatics Core Facility http://www.bioinformatics.uthscsa.edu Phone: (210) 567-2672 -- Let Crystal Reports handle the reporting - Free Crystal Reports 2008 30-Day trial. I set: $Conf{ServerHost} = 'nslu2'; $Conf{ServerPort} = 2359; $Conf{ServerMesgSecret} = ''; # 'nslu2' is the device's hostname, also contained in /etc/hosts and restarted the BackupPC daemon. You need to separate the xfer method from the storage to understand this. With tar or smb methods, the entire contents of a full are transfered. With rsync or rsyncd, this is a delta against the previous full (or incrementals if using levels) but if any content has changed in a file, a complete new copy is reconstructed on the backuppc server side. Just going back to my previous query about SQL dumps and my daily backups transferring the whole lot, I now realise that the last full backup was done when the system was under test and I had not yet included the SQL dump folder. The dump folder (700MB) was then picked up by the first incremental and has been transferred ever since because, as I now know, same-level incremental deltas are done against the last full backup and not between incrementals. [BackupPC-users] No emails being sent for backup failures
Backuppc is configured to send email for all hosts to one gmail account. All email sent to the attention of the administrator as well as each host's email is sent to the @gmail.com account. That is to say, the USER field is set to @gmail.com for ALL 20 of the hosts. This was a decision we made to avoid nagging our clients too much. The following emails have successfully come through to the gmail account: * Test emails * Administrative attention needed for "bogus" directories * No backups of have succeeded - for hosts that have NEVER ONCE succeeded. The problem arises when backups have been delayed for a client. There is one client that is rarely on the network. It has been about 16 days since the last time it was backed up. Backups happen when it is attached to the network, but I have never received an email from this client indicating that it has been more than 3 days since the last backup. On that host's summary page I see the following: * This PC is used by esybac...@gmail.com (and michalski). * Last email sent to esybac...@gmail.com was at 8/24 01:01, subject "BackupPC: no recent backups on a82f06-michalsk". * Last status is state "idle" (no ping) as of 8/26 07:00. * Last error is "host not found". * Pings to a82f06-michalsk have failed 170 consecutive times. I have EMailNotifyMinDays 2.5 set so I should be getting an email about every 3 days indicating a problem. If I look at the email summary page I see the following: Recipient: esybac...@gmail.com Host: a82f06-michalsk Time: 8/24 01:01 Subject: BackupPC: no recent backups on a82f06-michalsk This indicates to me that the checking subsystem is working properly and that, in general, the email system is working properly. The problem appears to be with only the delayed backup emails. What might be causing this problem? Where should I start looking for the source of this problem? I used the "bogus name for the sockFile" method, hence: my $sockFile = "$bpc->{LogDir}/BackupPC.sockNot"; Now BackupPC obviously uses tcp, because after launching the BackupPC_serverMesg command, netstat shows: tcp0 0 nslu2.:2359 nslu2.:41584ESTABLISHED tcp0 0 nslu2.:41584nslu2.:2359 ESTABLISHED But then the execution hangs at the same line as before: BackupPC::Lib::ServerConnect(/mnt/usbstick/usr/local/BackupPC/lib/BackupPC/Lib.pm:698): 698:sysread($bpc->{ServerFD}, $bpc->{ServerSeed}, 1024); strace shows that again the execution hangs when trying to make the read() system call: read(3, So it seems that the problem is the same with the tcp connection as with the unix socket. Thanks for the help, I now have it working. Perhaps this is a bug in the web front end as I configured all the hosts this way. There was a discussion some time ago about actual needs for backuppc and some use pretty high end hardware (for a lot of clients) while others go the other end. I think your main concern would be first different HD's for pool & samba. If you backup after working hours, which happens automatically if they are on all the time (like the servers) you might even put everything on one disk.
