Thanks George for responding.

With respect to your reference to: “split the host into two”, how does one
actually do that? My host references a certain computer consisting of various
drives to be backed up. How does one split that host into two separate hosts
and (presumably) back up each of those hosts? Thanks.

No great suggestions for resolution from me but I have some sympathy with you
having had similar issues occasionally in the past.

I have a number of rsyncd hosts set up on my main Win10 desktop - basically one
for each disk or part of to keep the backups down to a reasonable duration.
I'm running DeltaCopy Server.

When one of my backups 'stalled' after having worked for a while, it would do
as you have found and stall at the same place each time. Other disks/hosts
were not affected and completed fine, so it was nothing intrinsically wrong
with DeltaCopy or backuppc. I could monitor the file transfer via the Win10
Task Manager>Performance Tab > Resource Monitor > Disk tab and selecting the
right rsync process for the problematic disk. At least that gave me confidence
that the transfer was starting properly and progressing - and I could tell when
it properly stuck, and at which folder on the Win10 machine.

I couldn't find any informative messages in the backuppc logs to help me solve
it. When I manually stopped the backups, the partial backups were generally
removed or merged and the logs just showed that I had aborted the xfer.

What seems to have helped overcome the problem is, although I fail to
understand quite why, are:
- splitting the host into two, and
- copying the files from the folder at which the transfer stalled into another
folder, and
- I probably checked the Win10 folder permissions were OK and inherited by
sub-folders.

Dear All,

I backup a couple of Windows machines to a linux machine via rsync. However,
the backup for one of the Windows machines never finishes and results in a
partial backup. In the CGI user interface Count column, the backup always
seems to hang at 311941 for hours and hours. Then at some point, the backup
apparently stops and afterwards another backup which by that time has queued up
starts anew. Never do I get a completed backup only a partial (at least for
the last year or so).

Is there a way to start a backup from the command line and have the screen show
what in real time is actually being backed up? If so, what would that command
be? It may be that the BackupPC is somehow getting stuck on a file but that is
only speculation.

Any other ideas as to what my be happening?

I decompressed the partial backup log file (backup #884) using the command
BackupPC_zcat XferLOG.884.z. I have reproduced the bottom portion below.

Any assistance in helping to track down what is happening is appreciated. I do
see in the log that there is an error message indicating an “error in the rsync
protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(226).

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Micha.

This may be a silly question, but how does one split the backup into several
parts? Does that involve designating certain folders from a particular drive
for backup instead of the entire drive?

Try removing the leading "/" from each of the exclude paths. Also, you should
just exclude, eg, "OneDrive", not "OneDrive/*", and same for AppData.

[BackupPC-users] Excludes Parameter $Conf{BackupFilesExclude} Not Excluding

2020-10-13 Thread Akibu Flash
All,

I have an arch linux server backing up two Windows 10 clients via rsync. In
the main config.pl file, I have excluded via $Conf{BackupFilesExclude} several
subdirectories and files (listed below). However, they don't seem to be being
excluded by backuppc. I don't have any per-pc excludes as all of the
subdirectories and files to be exlcuded are common on both machines. Is there
something about the exclude syntax that I am misunderstanding? On each machine
the share to be backed up $Conf{RsyncShareName} is "/mnt/c/Users/". Below I
have listed the $Conf{BackupFilesExclude} entries. I have also listed a
snippet of the error messages that I am getting. There are thousands of the
error messages. Sometimes the error mesage is "Permission denied" and
sometimes it is "Invalid argument". However, those directories and files that
backuppc is trying to access are supposed to be being excluded to begin with.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

Akibu

[BackupPC-users] BackupPC Service Status "Count" Column

2020-07-22 Thread Akibu Flash
All,

In the CGI Interface on the BackupPC Service Status Page there is a Column
labelled "Count". What exactly is that determining? Is it the number of files
that have been backed up from that share? The reason I ask is because mine has
been stuck on 58721 for quite some time. What could be causing this and how
can I determine what is happening? There is nothing in the log file currently
that I can see which could be causing a problem. I have included a snippet
below.

For context, I am running BackupPC version 4 on an Arch Linux server and am
backing up a Windows 10 machine via rsyncd.

On a related note, is there a way to see what specifically is being copied at
any one time... in other words, is there a way to pipe out to the screen what
BackupPC is copying at the moment? And if so, can someone walk me through how
to do that?

Thanks in advance,

Akibu

Thanks Greg for the suggestion on what to check.

However, I just checked my Apache php implementation with a test php file from
the Arch Linux Apache page

work fine. Could there be something weird going on in the script? Thanks in

Apache is not reading the .php files as php, but text.

Apache configuration

BackupPC has a web interface that allows you to easily control it. You can
access it using Apache and mod_perl or a C wrapper but other webservers like
lighttpd<https://www.archlinux.org/packages/?name=lighttpd> works too. Install
apache<https://www.archlinux.org/packages/?name=apache> from the official
repositories.

Edit Apache configuration

BackupPC's web UI needs to run as the user backuppc, but Apache normally runs
under the user http. There are several ways to fix this. The two demonstrated
here are common for single-purpose servers (Apache is only used to serve the
BackupPC UI) or for multi-purpose servers (Apache may also server other
websites under the regular http user).

Setting up Apache for single-purpose use is a bit easier but not as flexible.

General settings

Edit /etc/backuppc/config.pl. Set administrator name:

$Conf{CgiAdminUsers} = 'admin';

Next, we need to add a users file and set the admin password:

# htpasswd -c /etc/backuppc/backuppc.users admin

The BackupPC-Webfrontend is initially configured so that you can only access it
from the localhost. If you want to access it from all machines in your network,
you have to edit /etc/httpd/conf/extra/backuppc.conf. Edit the line:

Require ip 127.0.0.1

to:

Require ip 127.0.0.1 192.168.0

where you have to replace 192.168.0 to your corresponding IP-Adresses you want
to gain access from. After one of the configuration steps below has also been
performed, [re]start the Apache service.

Single-purpose Apache settings

Install<https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Install>
mod_perl<https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/mod_perl/>AUR from the official
repositories<https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Official_repositories>.

Edit the Apache configuration file to load mod_perl, tell Apache to run as user
backuppc and to include /etc/httpd/conf/extra/backuppc.conf:

/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

 LoadModule perl_module modules/mod_perl.so
 User backuppc
 Group backuppc
 Include conf/extra/backuppc.conf

I assume that it is a simple fix but don't quite know where to begin. Any
assistance is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: [BackupPC-users] Are Files Re-Copied In Pool On Reinstall of Backup Client Operating System

2018-06-19 Thread Akibu Flash
So, does the BackupPC pool keep the original backed-up files indefinitely, or
is there a period of time after which it deletes the files, the theory being it
doesn't see that Windows client anymore and thus the pool files aren't needed
anymore. For example, if I my Windows machine is off line for a couple of
weeks while I am reinstalling the operating system, will BackupPC delete the
files in the interim? Thanks.

Re: [BackupPC-users] Fedora 27 and SCGI

Thanks @Michael Stowe<mailto:michael.st...@member.mensa.org>.

Concerning the 9 port number, I only put 9 in the email as a stand in
number as I did not know if there was any security ramification to disclosing
the actual port publicly. The port is actually 10268.

Concerning mod_scgi not being enabled, that may be the case, but I don't know
how to enable it. I know that on a debian based system, I would enable the
module by use of "a2enmod". However, there is no such module enabler on Fedora
and the apache documentation doesn't really say how it is done. Any
suggestions as to the command to use?

Port numbers are 16-bit integers, so you might want to start by picking a valid

However, when trying to restart the apache server, I get the following error

That error is telling you that mod_scgi is not enabled.

if this has any negative consequences, it allowed me to run some commands.

IV. Starting the GUI
a) init.d is NOT used in Fedora 26! Fedora has been SystemD based for many
releases now and the package installs the systemd service file.

b) In terminal

# sudo systemctl enable httpd
# sudo systemctl enable backuppc
# sudo systemctl start backuppc

If all goes well pointing your browser to the gui at http://localhost/BackupPC
should show the interface. Keep in mind that the default apache configuration
only allows access from localhost, if you want to access it from another
machine you'll have to edit the configuration in
/etc/httpd/conf.d/BackupPC.conf.

Then reboot the machine (this is important), then test the link to the gui. If
all goes well, then start the fun! If you still don't connect, perhaps it'a an
apache-related error, which you may be able to debug in the apache log in
/var/log/httpd

I don't really have a good way to deal with this from a packaging perspective,
I'll review the readme's and see if I can make it more clear.

You obviously created the apache.users files from root, the file needs to have
the same owner and group as the other files (backuppc/apache). After that the
usual attributes should work (644).

Re: [BackupPC-users] SCGI and BackupPC

2017-07-07 Thread Akibu Flash
Thanks Johan "serveripaddress/BackupPC_Admin" did the trick for at least
getting the username and password prompt in the browser.

Of course, now I have run into another problem which seems to be apache2
related. When I enter the username and password, I now get the following error
quoted:

"Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to
complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator at webmaster@localhost to inform them
of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this
error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Apache/2.4.25 (Debian) Server at 10.10.10.32 Port 80"

I know that the username and password are correct as I have run this command to
set them: "htpasswd -c /etc/apache2/.htpasswd backuppc"

When I look in the log file for apache2, I see the following entry:

[Fri Jul 07 09:17:54.525318 2017] [:error] [pid 17209:tid 139848966993664]
(111)Connection refused: [client 192.168.2.45:51689] scgi: scgi: can't connect
to server

Any further ideas? I presume that though it can connect to the server (as when
I type the server ipaddress in the browser, I do see the debain "It works"
page), it somehow is not seeing the backuppc server stuff.

Thanks again.

[BackupPC-users] SCGI and BackupPC

2017-07-07 Thread Akibu Flash
All, I have installed BackupPC version 4.1.3 and have started it from the
command line using "systemctl start backuppc.service" on a Debian 9 system. I
am now attempting to setup the SCGI web interface. I have done the following:

In my backuppc config file, I have specified the SCGI Sever Port:
$Conf{SCGIServerPort} = ;
In my /etc/apache2/apache2.conf file, I have added the following lines:
LoadModule scgi_module modules/mod_scgi.so
SCGIMount /BackupPC_Admin 127.0.0.1:

The scgi module appears to have been loaded as it is listed in the mods-enabled
directory under the /etc/apache2 directory. However, when I try and access
backuppc in a web browser, I get the following error.
Not Found
The requested URL /BackupPC was not found on this server.

Apache/2.4.25 (Debian) Server at 10.10.10.32 Port 80

My apache2 server works fine as if I type the ipaddress of the server into the
web browser, I get confirmation that "It Works". It is probably something
simple that I am missing. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Akibu,

The convention is to not use the trailing "/" on rsync share names. Unlike
most linux utilities, in certain cases rsync will behave differently whether or
not there is a trailing "/" on a directory name.

So you probably want do this:

$Conf{RsyncShareName} = "/cygdrive/j";
$Conf{BackupFilesExclude} = {
'/cygdrive/j' => [
'/useless_folder_1',
'/useless_folder_2'
 ]
};

Also, if the list of directories to include is shorter than the list to
exclude, you might be better off using $Conf{BackupFilesOnly} to list the
directories you want. That way if you make a mistake, it's likely the backup
is smaller (or empty), which makes debugging and iterating easier.

Don't mix the syntax for the configuration web UI and the
config.pl<http://config.pl>. The former will properly create the latter, and
the web UI can be used without any particular knowledge of perl or use of
brackets.

On the web UI, you will have a list of share names, or *, and then a list of
excludes belonging to those share names. This translates to the syntax often
shared here which corresponds to what you'd see in the
config.pl<http://config.pl> files.

In either case, what you have above is incorrect, as your excludes need to
correspond to a share ('*' is fine, if you want to associate excludes with all
shares.) Since it's not obvious what your share names are, I can't tell you
what this would be — ‘/cygdrive/j’ perhaps, but if it doesn't match the actual
share, it won't exclude anything.

Re: [BackupPC-users] BackupPC Excludes - How To

2017-06-18 Thread Akibu Flash
Thank you @mst...@chicago.us.mensa.org<mailto:mst...@chicago.us.mensa.org> for
your response. In terms of share names, currently I am listing multiple shares
on my "j" drive for backup e.g. /cygdrive/j/Documents; /cgdrive/j/Photos, etc.
What I would like to do is to not list each share name and have backuppc backup
the entire /cygdrive/j drive and merely have a couple of directories excluded
since there are only a few directories on j that I don't want backed up. Does
this mean that in the web interface, my share name would be /cygdrive/j/*? And
my excludes would be something like /cygdrive/j/useless_stuff_1;
/cygdrive/j/useless_stuff_2?

Thanks again.

Don't mix the syntax for the configuration web UI and the config.pl. The former
will properly create the latter, and the web UI can be used without any
particular knowledge of perl or use of brackets.

@Craig Barratt<mailto:cbarr...@users.sourceforge.net> that was indeed the
problem. I was able to get my ssh to use password-less login and sorted out
the list of known_hosts issue and that seemed to do the trick.

Failed to add the host to the list of known hosts
(/home/backuppc/.ssh/known_hosts).

In addition to password-less login, this error is also a problem. It probably
means your permissions on ~backuppc/.ssh/known_hosts are wrong. Without the
client being in known_hosts, ssh will prompt every time to be sure you want to
proceed.

So there are two prompts (ok to proceed & password) you need to get rid of.

Thanks @Craig Barratt<mailto:cbarr...@users.sourceforge.net>. Looks like it is
a little bit of both. When I turned the firewall completely off and ran your

for a root password for Windows and when I enter my password, it rejects it.
Strange, as when I run this command as backuppc “ssh akibu@akibu-desktop” and
enter my Windows password, it allows me into the Windows computer.

Thanks @Craig Barratt<mailto:cbarr...@users.sourceforge.net>. I don’t get any
output or error whatsoever when running the command you suggested. I tried
hitting ^D but still did not get an error or output. (btw, is that a
Ctrl+Shift+D or Ctrl+D (neither produced an output though)). Thanks.

Akibu,

It looks like the connection terminates immediately. We need to figure out why.

If you run the exact ssh command as the backuppc user, do you get an error or
any output?

su backuppcUser
/usr/bin/ssh -q -x -l root akibu-desktop /usr/bin/rsync --server --sender
-svvvlHogDtprce.iLsf

If you don't see any output, hit ^D and you should get an error like this:

rsync: on remote machine: (null): unknown option
rsync error: syntax or usage error (code 1) at main.c(1634) [server=3.1.1]
[server] _exit_cleanup(code=1, file=main.c, line=1634): about to call exit(1)

Next, are you sure that the directory /mnt/j/Favorites on akibu-desktop exists?

Craig

(Thestrace is showing the dynamic linking during startup of ssh, which isn't

What we are missing is the log output from XferLOG. That has the more detailed

find it in the per-PC backup directory, eg:
/data/BackupPC/pc/clientName/XferLOG.bad.z. Use BackupPC_zcat to uncompress it.

without problem.

Also without extraenous output? You seem to be using rsync over ssh, and rsync
is quite fussy about messages that it does not expect. As a rule of thumb, to a
Linux computer,

% ssh clientcomputer true

%

should immediately display the next prompt as indicated above, i.e. nothing
extra, not even blanks or newlines. For Windoze, your mileage may vary, but it
probably won't. The actual invokation used by BackupPC (or rather rsync_bpc)
might include extra options to ssh, e.g. -q -x -l someuser ... include those
when testing.

- Correct, Holger. I am using rsync over ssh and ssh seems to

work without a problem. When I run the test you suggested: "$ssh targetcomputer
true", I merely get the prompt in response "$". Strace seems to confirm that
ssh is working correctly as when I ssh into the targetcomputer from the command
line, and while running running strace on the targetcomputer, all seems to work
as expected. In addition, when I rsync into the targetcomputer from the command
line, rsync appears to work just fine.

However, when I use the backuppc program to rsync into the very same
targetcomputer, I get the Unexplained Error Code 255 message. Below shows the
ssh strace when I started a manual backuppc backup of some files on the
targetcomputer, if that helps. My log level is up to 9, but not much
information is being generated. I am unclear of how to diagnose as I am not
that versed in linux. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Akibu.

Thanks @Michael Stowe<mailto:mst...@chicago.us.mensa.org>. I am merely trying
to backup some directories which exist on a windows machine from a Linux
machine, in this case "/mnt/j/Desktop" Neither /dev or (/proc /sys /tmp) exist
in that directory.

(Err.

What, exactly, are you trying to resolve? I suspect you've gotten no answer
because many people looked and said, well, that's obvious, don't back up the
/dev directory, because it's dynamically created. While you're at it, don't
back up /proc, /sys, or /tmp.)

wow ... where did you get that version from?

- I must have been asleep when I wrote version 4.4.1. I meant version
4.1.1.

Also without extraenous output? You seem to be using rsync over ssh, and rsync
is quite fussy about messages that it does not expect. As a rule of thumb, to a
*Linux* computer,

   % ssh clientcomputer true
   %

should immediately display the next prompt as indicated above, i.e. nothing
extra, not even blanks or newlines. For Windoze, your mileage may vary, but it
probably won't. The actual invokation used by BackupPC (or rather rsync_bpc)
might include extra options to ssh, e.g. -q -x -l someuser ... include those
when testing.

- Correct, Holger. I am using rsync over ssh and ssh seems to work
without a problem.
In addition, when I rsync into the targetcomputer from the
command line, rsync appears to work just fine.

Thanks. Akibu.

What version of rsync are you running on the client?

Another user reported a problem that the default cygwin rsync setup on 3.x
doesn't allow remote charset settings. BackupPC 4.x uses the --iconv rsync
option, which will fail without a clear error message.

You should add "charset = utf-8" to the client's rsyncd.conf to see if that's
the issue.

(Since it fails very early in the transfer, I'd recommend you add "-vvv" to
$Conf{RsyncArgs}.)

Subject: [BackupPC-users] Web Interface Not Displaying Correctly - 4.0.0alpha3

Dear Group,

I am setting up BackupPC version 4.0.0alpha3 and am having a peculiar problem
with the manner in which the web interface is displaying. The problem is that
the BackupPC logo and and images do not appear to display correctly no matter
which browser is being used. They almost appear to be broken links somehow.
In fact, they don't really appear to display at all. (See attached screenshot
as well as image below). Has anyone run into this and if so, can you walk me
through what I am doing wrong. It is probably something simple, but I can't
quite figure it out. I opted for the SCGI option for setting up the CGI
interface so my apache.conf configuration file contains the following entries:

LoadModule scgi_module modules/mod_scgi.so
SCGIMount /BackupPC_Admin 127.0.0.1:10268

Other entries in my /etc/BackupPC/config.pl file are:

$Conf{CgiURL} = 'http://linux-desktop/cgi-bin/BackupPC_Admin';

$Conf{RrdToolPath} = '/usr/bin/rrdtool';

$Conf{SCGIServerPort} = 10268;

$Conf{CgiImageDir} = '/var/www/htdocs/BackupPC';

$Conf{CgiImageDirURL} = '/BackupPC';

Please advise if you need any further information. Thanks.

[BackupPC-users] Rsync_bpc Failing Because of Inaccessible Password?

2015-02-25 Thread Akibu Flash
I am using BackupPC 4.0 on a debian distro to backup two
windows computers running Cygwin. I am
using rsyncd as the vehicle to back them up.
When I try to start a backup, the backup fails apparently because of an
rsync_bpc issue. The log file entries
are below:

Does anyone recognize that error and know what
it means? It seems as though it needs some sort of password but I don't know
where to input a password. The only password I know of is in the secrets file
on the target Windows machines, but this looks like it is not even connecting
to even get that far.
Thanks in advance.--

Re: [BackupPC-users] BackupPC-4.0.0alpha3 - Can't create a test hardlink between a file...

2015-02-19 Thread Akibu Flash
Igor,

I meant to reply to the group to let them know that the problem had been
solved, but your email makes me think that it has not been solved
fully. The script runs as user backuppc and apparently user backuppc
did not have permission to write to the data locations. Once I fixed
the permissions issue, the command start stop command would work and
give me an ok.

What makes me think that the problem has not been solved fully is that
when I run the first two of your commands, I get no response (as
expected) and the testgram is created properly. However, your third
command does gives me an error that I don't understand. Below are the
results:

backuppc@linux-pc5:/data/BackupPC/pc$ touch /data/BackupPC/pc/testgram

backuppc@linux-pc5:/data/BackupPC/pc$

backuppc@linux-pc5:/$ ln /data/BackupPC/pc/testgram /data/BackupPC/cpool

backuppc@linux-pc5:/$

backuppc@linux-pc5:/$ rm /data/BackupPC/pc/testgram /data/BackupPC/cpool

rm: cannot remove ‘/data/BackupPC/cpool’: Is a directory

backuppc@linux-pc5:/$ ls -ld /data

drwxrwx---+ 3 root root 4096 Jan 18 23:00 /data

backuppc@linux-pc5:/$ ls -ld /data/BackupPC

drwxrwx---+ 5 backuppc backuppc 4096 Jan 18 23:00 /data/BackupPC

backuppc@linux-pc5:/$ df /data/BackupPC

Filesystem 1K-blocksUsed Available Use% Mounted on

/dev/mapper/dreux-root 19092180 3932368 14166944 22% /

backuppc@linux-pc5:/$ tune2fs -l /dev/mapper/dreux-root

tune2fs 1.42.12 (29-Aug-2014)

tune2fs: Permission denied while trying to open /dev/mapper/dreux-root

Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.

Is the output what was to be expected? A couple of things are throwing
me for a loop. First, on the remove command rm
/data/BackupPC/pc/testgram /data/BackupPC/cpool, should that really be
rm /data/BackupPC/pc/testgram /data/BackupPC/cpool/testgram and is
that the nature of the Is a directory error? I presume so. Or should
my merely removing the linked target also remove the linked file?

Second, the could not find valid filesystem superblock error is unclear.

Thanks in advance.

 Hi,

regarding the start-stop-daemon issue: Runscripts should always be
executed as root. Because start-stop-daemon is usually located in
/sbin you will see this error when executing the runscript as user.

Try to execute the following commands as backuppc user:

 $ touch /data/BackupPC/pc/test
 $ ln /data/BackupPC/pc/test /data/BackupPC/cpool
 $ rm /data/BackupPC/pc/test /data/BackupPC/cpool

If one of these commands fail, please show us the output from ls -ld
 /data and ls -ld /data/BackupPC.

Also, run df /data/BackupPC and use the value from the Filesystem
 column in tune2fs -l $value (for example tune2fs -l
 /dev/mapper/dreux-roo where /dev/mapper/dreux-roo could be
 different).

 Regards,
 Igor

Yes, this error is expected based on the commands you were given. It
would help if you understood the commands you run, as sometimes you will
be told to run something that could be highly destructive (even if by
accident).

In this case, you had the command:
backuppc@linux-pc5:/$ rm /data/BackupPC/pc/testgram /data/BackupPC/cpool
rm: cannot remove ‘/data/BackupPC/cpool’: Is a directory

Which says remove the two *files* /data/BackupPC/pc/testgram and
/data/BackupPC/cpool, but the second is a directory, not a file. So rm
is complaining that you asked it to remove a file, but it wasn't a file.
The command should have been:
rm /data/BackupPC/pc/testgram /data/BackupPC/cpool/testgram

Adam

[BackupPC-users] SCGI on Backuppc - help set up

2015-02-09 Thread Akibu Flash

I have installed BackupPC-4.0.0alpha3 on my debian (jessie) system. I believe
that it is set up correctly as when I run the command: /etc/init.d/backuppc
start I get a backuppc starting message and then an ok. I am now trying to
set up the SCGI Apache interface but am not quite sure specifically what to do.
What I have done so far is to install the Apache SCGI module
libapache2-mod-scgi. Then I enabled the module using a2enmod so it now shows
up in the mods-enabled directory. What I don't understand is what to do next.
I expect that I have to make some change or changes to the config.pl file of
Backuppc, however, I am unclear of what those changes are. Does a change need
to be made to the below section and if so what change? What information goes
into the $Conf{CgiURL} = section and where would I get that information. Also
are there any other changes that I need to make? Thanks in advance.
akibuflash

$Conf{SCGIServerPort} = 10268;
 # Full URL of the BackupPC_Admin CGI script, or the configured path
 # for SCGI. Used for links in email messages.
 $Conf{CgiURL} = '';
