Re: [BackupPC-users] Bug: Cannot use rsyncd on RHEL4 hosts: child exited prematurely

Maybe I shouldn't chime in, because I've only been half following this
thread, but I can't help wondering if you've looked into all the
firewall/timeout possibilities? Sometimes those settings get hosed during
an upgrade too.

Maybe, but I think there is something subtle involved. I back up a
bunch of CentOS 4.x boxes without any problems like that and it's
compiled from the same source rpms.

We use CentOS 4 with rsync from Dag's repository (dag.wieers.com).
 Never had any rsync problems.

Re: [BackupPC-users] backuppc and opensuse 10.2 clients

2007-01-08 Thread ckeil
Is this via rsync? I think it's important that everybody be running the
same exact version of rsync. I had the same problem (/var failing, other
/'s working (on Fedora though)) and, IIRC, updating rsync fixed it.

YMMV,

 Hello

I recently installed a few opensuse 10.2 workstations in my network
 (upgrade
from older suse versions) and the backup of these workstations ceased to
work. The error is that listFileReceived() fails for the /var partition.
Strange is that the backup of the /root and /etc partitions are correctly
 done beforehand.

 Here is the log excerpt:

 Xfer PIDs are now 11811
 Got remote protocol 29
 Negotiated protocol version 26
 fileListReceive() failed
 Done: 0 files, 0 bytes
Got fatal error during xfer (fileListReceive failed)
 Backup aborted (fileListReceive failed)

 Any idea?

 Hi

just a suggestion: if you are using rsync and has upgraded rsync
somewhere (or if there's the possibility that this has happened), try
to look for --devices options in your BackupPC config file(s) and
change them all to -D. This may be what is happening.

Re: [BackupPC-users] Which version to use for new install

2006-10-11 Thread ckeil
Thanks. Ubuntu is actually the only other distro besides redhat, fedora
and k12ltsp (all RedHat off shoots) that I have ever installed or used.
That easy install sure is tempting.

My favorite distribution is Ubuntu 6.06. It will be supported for
another 5 1/2 years, is easy to keep updated, and is a breeze to get
BackupPC running on - apt-get install backuppc, add machines to hosts,
configure SSH keys, and voila. I have several clients running BackupPC
on Ubuntu at this point and haven't had any issues so far (at least none
 that weren't my fault :)

So, any thoughts about installing a brand new (on old recycled hardware)

If you want to build a server that you can leave running for a long
time without having to upgrade the OS, I'd go with CentOS (http://
www.centos.org/) instead of Fedora. CentOS is a de-branded version of
Red Hat Enterprise Linux (which in turn is based on Fedora Core), so
you'll barely notice the difference, but CentOS has a much longer
support cycle. The current release will receive security fixes till
at least 2012 (and CentOS 5 will be released in a couple of months).

No special recipe for the install, just follow the instructions on
 the site: http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/faq/BackupPC.html

 Nils Breunese.

[BackupPC-users] Upgrading RSYNC on FC3

2006-10-08 Thread ckeil
Hi,

I've got a problem that I've traced back to incompatible rsync version on
the server that I'm trying to back up. I'm 99% sure I need to upgrade
rsync on this server. It's so old that yum update xxx or yum upgrade
xxx never really does anything it just says no packages marked for
update no errors or anything.

So, can anyone suggest a method for updating rsync on this old server that
won't lead to other problems/incompatibilities?

Thanks,

[BackupPC-users] OT - Can someone recommend an ATA controller for a big hard drive?

2006-09-29 Thread ckeil
Hi Folks,

I really want to get a bigger hard drive as part of upgrading my BackupPC
machine to the latest version of Fedora Core and BackupPC. I'm over 80%
disk utilization right now. I'm using a 120 Gig HD right now to back up a
200 gig and a 60 gig server.

I'm extremely tempted by this deal at Fry's...
http://www.outpost.com/entry?site=op:mfe031406sku=4596287

The problem is that my backup server is a Dell 466 Celeron workstation.
I know I'm going to need a PCI card to drive this 400 Gig UDMA HD.

So, does anyone know of a decent, cheapish, card that will be picked up by
Fedora and bridge the gap between my old Celeron based computer and this
monster hard drive?

Thanks,

ck
