Re: [Bacula-users] E-mails with the subject "Backup OK" when warnings have occurred.
Hi tomasz, on 01.02.2008 12:56 you wrote: > bacula do not track or care about scripts running as before_backup > thingy if they are successful or not. > > bacula care about files to backup > > if 'external' script for some reason failed i does not mean it is > important for bacula. Yes it does. Just a couple of days ago one of my Bacula backup jobs failed because the ClientRunBeforeScript contained a mistake. Bacula started the script, noticed that it didn't run successfully, and consequently didn't even try to back up any files from that client. So, obviously, Bacula *does* track and care if "Run Before" scripts are successful, and it *is* important to Bacula if such an external script failed for whatever reason, to the point that Bacula actually refuses to back up any files from the affected client. Note1: This is as it should be. If the "Run Before" script is of such a nature that the backup can proceed even if the script failed, then the script should just refrain from signalling its failure to Bacula. (It's easy: in shell terms, do "exit 0" instead of "exit $?".) Note2: I am aware that this wasn't Justin's problem. I just wanted to clear up the misconception. [Bacula-users] Backups wont start on bacula 2.2.8
Hi, I have just moved from ver. 1.38.5 to 2.2.8 and the first backup job was supposed to run tonight. It started at 23:00 and nothing happened. Device status said: Device status: Device "FileBackup" (/dataspace/bacula-backups) is not open. Device "Tape" (/dev/nst0) is not open. Device is being initialized. In Use Volume status: EPOL004 on device "Tape" (/dev/nst0) Reader=0 writers=0 reserved=1 released=0 Since it said that the device is not open I issued a series of mount/umount: #mount Tape Automatically selected Catalog: MyCatalog Using Catalog "MyCatalog" 3001 Device "Tape" (/dev/nst0) is doing acquire. #umount Tape 3901 Device "Tape" (/dev/nst0) is already unmounted. #mount Tape 3001 Device "Tape" (/dev/nst0) is doing acquire. I have attached the config files if someone would kind enough to check to see if I have made any wrong specifications. The server is on a linux fedora 7 system and the clients are same system, a windows 2000, and a windows XP. I don't suspect the tape drive (DDS-4) because when I go back to the old fedora 5 with bacula 1.38.5 it performs flawlesly, the tape is usually premounted and the backup job starts within seconds to write to the tape. -- Thanks in advance Erik. # # Bacula Director Configuration file for EPO data # Director {# define myself Name = epo-dir DIRport = 9101# where we listen for UA connections QueryFile = "/etc/bacula/conf/query.sql" WorkingDirectory = "/etc/bacula/working" PidDirectory = "/etc/bacula/pid" Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 1 Password = "xGQd+b22P5rzX9espVGUetBjOrX8czfvzRqQ1cEwz0FT" # Console password Messages = Daemon } JobDefs { Name = "DefaultJob" Type = Backup Level = Incremental Client = epohost-fd FileSet = "Full Set" Storage = Tape Messages = Standard Pool = LargeTapes Priority = 10 } # # Define the Virtual Machine back-up job # Job { Name = "epovirt" JobDefs = "DefaultJob" Level = Full Fileset = "VMware Set" Pool = ShortTapes Write Bootstrap = "/etc/bacula/working/epovirt.bsr" } # # Define the main linux system back-up job # Job { Name = "epohost" JobDefs = "DefaultJob" Schedule = "epohost-WeeklyCycle" Storage = Tape Pool = LargeTapes RunAfterJob = "/etc/bacula/conf/eject-tape" Write Bootstrap = "/etc/bacula/working/epohost.bsr" } # # Define the back-up job for epowork (TP600E) # Job { Name = "epowork" JobDefs = "DefaultJob" Client = epowork-fd Schedule = "epowork-WeeklyCycle" Storage = Tape Pool = LargeTapes FileSet = "W2K Set" Write Bootstrap = "/etc/bacula/working/epowork.bsr" } # # Define the back-up job for epo.xp (A31) # Job { Name = "epo-xp" JobDefs = "DefaultJob" Client = epoxp-fd Schedule = "epoxp-WeeklyCycle" Storage = Tape Pool = LargeTapes FileSet = "XP Set" Write Bootstrap = "/etc/bacula/working/epo-xp.bsr" } # # Back the catalog database up (after each system back-up) # Job { Name = "BackupCatalog" JobDefs = "DefaultJob" Level = Full FileSet="Catalog" Schedule = "WeeklyCycleAfterBackup" # This creates an ASCII copy of the catalog RunBeforeJob = "/etc/bacula/conf/make_catalog_backup bacula bacula" # This deletes the copy of the catalog RunAfterJob = "/etc/bacula/conf/delete_catalog_backup" Write Bootstrap = "/etc/bacula/working/BackupCatalog.bsr" Priority = 11 # run after main backup } # # Standard Restore template, to be changed by Console program # Job { Name = "RestoreFiles" Type = Restore Client=epohost-fd FileSet="Full Set" Storage = Tape Pool = LargeTapes Messages = Standard Where = /tmp/bacula-restores } # # List of files to be backed up for testing purposes # FileSet { Name = "Test epohost" Include { Options {

Pool record not found in Catalog. > " This is actually fairly concerning. Normally, in the case of MySQL declaring a table is corrupt, I'd suggest that you just repair the table and move on. In this case, though, the table that's corrupt is the batch table. This is just a temporary table, which normally shouldn't even be hanging around long enough to get a chance to be corrupted, which means that something is hitting it really quick. The first thing I'd check is to make sure that the partition holding /tmp isn't running out of space. If it is, either tell MySQL to use a different directory with more space, or increase the amount of space allocated to /tmp. Beyond that, I'd check through your kernel logs to make sure that there aren't any filesystem or hard drive errors popping up. Just to make one thing clear, though - this is almost certainly not a Bacula problem. All that Bacula ever does is fire off standard SQL queries at the server, which (barring some catastrophic but in MySQL) should never be able to produce a corrupt table. -- Frank Sweetser fs at wpi.edu | For every problem, there is a solution that WPI Senior Network Engineer | is simple, elegant, and wrong. - HL Mencken GPG fingerprint = 6174 1257 129E 0D21 D8D4 E8A3 8E39 29E3 E2E8 8CEC - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. [Bacula-users] MySQL Errors being logged
I've been using bacula on a Xen server for many months with no problems at all. A week ago I set up some jobs to run concurrently to the existing jobs to back up some remote clients to a remote sd. Since then, jobs aren't completing and are hanging around and things are just not running well, although I think the jobs ran okay for the first few nights. I upgraded bacula from Debian's 2.2.0 to 2.2.6 around the same time, remembering that there was a critical bug in Bacula releases around that time. This was probably a bit foolish in retrospect - I should have let 2.2.6 run for a bit before introducing the new jobs. I think the cause may be being indicated by the following messages being logged: " 03-Feb 23:24 bitvs1-dir JobId 2104: Fatal error: sql_create.c:732 sql_create.c:732 insert INSERT INTO batch VALUES (234440,2104,'/usr/local/src/linux-2.6-2.6.18.dfsg.1/arch/powerpc/sysdev /','mmio_nvram.c','P0A BVJx1 IGg B Po Po A sk BAA I BHoxp9 BFELiO BHoxqG A A E','LwUL7mrqTpsgiK8bTaPM5A') failed: Incorrect key file for table '/tmp/#sqle43_153_0.MYI'; try to repair it 03-Feb 23:24 bitvs1-dir JobId 2104: Fatal error: catreq.c:482 Attribute create error. Pool record not found in Catalog. " Bacula is version 2.2.6 (Debian package), MySQL is 5.0.32-7etch1 (again, Debian package). Any suggestions as to what I need to do to fix it? Blowing away the database is an option, as my media are fairly high rotation (backups are mainly for disaster recovery as opposed to file recovery), but obviously a better solution would be preferred. I'm sorry I forgot to mention this: not only the software is old, but typically those machines control some special (non-computer) harware equipment, obviously use simple delay loops to generate timings, and may have eg. a custom ISA-bus interface card. That could be quite a challenge for the virtualization in modern hardware ;-) I do have a couple of those similar old computers available as spare parts, so the problem is easy way to manage backups. Of course, I could make disk image copies etc (that has been done sometimes), but I just was wondering if Bacula could make things easier... -- TiN - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. [Bacula-users] Bacula client on Windows 95
Hey, stop that ROTFALMAO stuff... I'm serious with this! :-) Does anyone have recent experiencies with installing Bacula file daemon to Windows 95 system? The latest manual says "we have coded to support Win95, but have no longer a system for testing". Same phrase exists already in the oldest manual version I have available, that is 1.38.2 manual of November 2005. I used to have 1.36 manuals, but obviously I have deleted it already. I have a few old(!) currently-not-backed-up Windows 95 systems that are essential due to some special software that does not run on newer (NT-based) systems, and I'd like to have a backup of them for the unwanted case something nasty would happen some day. I don't have a pure test system available either, and I wouldn't like to start building a one, and I would like to limit error-and-horror-style testing to very minimum on these old production systems. So good advices ("recycle those ancient systems" is not consired a good one here) would be appreciated. I have 2.2.8 director and storage daemon, and aim to keep them up-to-date in the future too. AFAIK, file daemon doesn't have to be of the same version, so what might be the safest version of Windows file daemon to try? Should I start with the latest one 2.2.8, an early bird of 2.x branch ( I do have 2.0 and 2.1 versions in my own archive although they do not seem to be available on SF), or would a safe(r) bet be giving a try to 1.38? Or should I try to find an even older, eg. 1.36.x client somewhere... I don't have it, and neither it is on SF any more. One reason that makes 1.38.10 to look temptating is the size of the installer package, about 5 MB instead of over 10 MB 2.x packages. However, should I avoid the 1.38 version because of possible compatibility problems with future 3.x versions that may be available later this year? My typical Win95 system in this case is ~100 MHz Pentium, with 32 or 64 MB of RAM. Any chances I could get Bacula running on them? My goal is just to have a very basic "copy all files" backup with no extra fine tuning. Regards, Timo - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges.
