2008-12-04 Thread Stefan Eriksson
Hi does anyone have any news on this? If not, If a developer could contact
me, I'm willing to lend out a test environment to get this possible bug
fixed, getting full support for win2008 would be great, same with virtual
environments (vmware in my case).

So if you are a developer please contact me and I'll lend you a VPS with
2008 for testing.

I dont think it has anything to do with the networkconnection, I've tried to
disable the firewall but still had the same issue.

Is there someone who know how the hello code work?

Somebody else mentioned that the same problem occured with 64-bit Vista.
As far as I know, Windows 2008 is primarily 64 bit (although there is a
32-bit version available). Maybe it helps if you can use Wireshark or
similar to see what is actually being sent/received?

[Bacula-users] bscan Desirables

2008-12-04 Thread Glen Davison
Dear Bacula Users,

A wish-list, and a couple of small questions:

a) When you give bscan a list of tapes with -V, it works its way through
them one by one. But if it hits an error on one of the tapes, it gives up
and throws away ALL of the previously scanned tapes. ie. nothing gets
written into the catalog. Could it update the catalog: at a sensible
place in each tape; at the end of each job; or update with what it has
found to be good so far, at least on the previous good tapes, to mitigate
this? ie. save you from having to re-scan the previous dozen tapes again.

b) I notice that in version 2.4.2, bscan -V tape1|tape2|etc... now manages
to unload the tape it has finished, which is a nice step forward. Is it
likely that it will one day load the next one too?

c) The docs on www.bacula.org mention problems with bscanning across tape
boundaries:

"If you do not specify all necessary Volumes on a single bscan command,
bscan will not be able to correctly restore the records that span two
volumes. In other words, it is much better to specify two or three volumes
on a single bscan command rather than run bscan two or three times, each
with a single volume."

Is this still accurate? I spent some time experimenting with bscan, and
from what I could tell bscanning an individual volume seemed to be
problem-free. If it is still true, that could also relate to a) above.

Thanks
Glen

Arno,

Thanks for your reply. I do indeed see from the description of the
automatic volume labeling feature that this is the case, and that this is
what bacula actually does. In the 'Pool' section, under the description of
Label Format, however, it says otherwise:

"If no variable expansion characters are found in the string, the
Volume name will be formed from the format string appended with the
number of volumes in the pool plus one,..."

where it actually means "...number of volumes in the catalog plus one...".
I will probably switch to using multiple catalogs.

That's because Bacula uses the overall number of known volumes, not
the number of volumes per pool. This decreases the probability that it
tries to create a volume which already exists (though it doesn't
absolutely prevent that).

Just imagine that you delete one volume from the pool - the next one
automatically created will get an existing name.

In setups where the volume names are expected to be numbered
sequentially, I just create the volumes manually (or by script, if a
large number of volumes will be needed).

I was just about to point this out ;-)

Well, I believe the different supported catalog backends might behave
differently, and I also don't know if it's common to cancel running
database operations when the program initiating them terminates.

That said, it might be possible to unconditionally cancel all active
queries when dbcheck terminates, but it might also be possible that
database-dependent code would be needed for this purpose.

I'm sure that a patch would be seriously considered, but as you point
out, this is probably not very pressing for the regular developers
right now...

Dynamic block sizes are correct for Bacula (typically).

Possible... sleep times or wait_for_device() might need to be
adjusted, but I think you would see different problems if that was the

Pruning a volumn, whether automatic or manual, will delete/purge from the
catalog job & file records which are beyond their retention periods. If all
job & file records for the volume are deleted/purged from the catalog, then
the status of the volume will be changed to Purged.

> purge volume, or

Purge will delete/purge all job & file records from the catalog irregardless
of their retention periods. The volume status will be changed to Purged.

> update volume Volume Status

Obviously, you could manually change the status of a volume to Purged without
the volume having first been prunned or manually purged. I'm not sure what
will happen but I'm afraid that your catalog would be left in an inconsistant
state,i.e., job & file records would still be in the catalog even though they
no longer are physically on the volume. (I suspect that you would have to run
dbcheck to repair the inconsistancy.)

If I understand your situation correctly, then manually purging a volume would
be the best course of action.

It is difficult to predict (e.g. a DDS4 drive needs 2 marks on the same
machine as the LTO-1).

I would try it with 1 mark and use that if it passes btape's tests. Use 2
marks only if 1 mark doesn't work.

It also depends on whether any other program uses the tape drive and need some
specific configuration.

When I attempt to mount a volume that is appendable it simply restates that
I need to label a new volume for the pool.

*mount
The defined Storage resources are:
 1: CoalFile
 2: vcsjrcac-coal
 3: vcsjrcac-pitch
Select Storage resource (1-3): 2
Enter autochanger drive[0]:
Enter autochanger slot: 161
3001 OK mount. Device="jrcac-coal-0" (/var/lib/bacula/vchanger/jrcac/drive0)

I have not found any workaround to this other than giving in to its demands
and labeling a new volume. That option is not available to me 99.99% of the

[Bacula-users] Bacula asks for media when inchange is 1 but storageid does not match storage device

2008-12-04 Thread Dos mage
I have two storage daemons with two magazines. There are two pools between
them; one for 43day retention and one for 13day retention. I've noticed
that Bacula is indiscriminate about which magazine to pull from. What ends
up happening is that a job that requires a volume from, for example, our
43day pool a request is made to a storage daemon to mount a volume from our
other storage daemon. I noticed that the mysql database seems to understand
which storageid media belongs to. Perhaps I am incorrectly configuring
this, but I am not certain what that might be.

My question is, are there any users who have common pools shared amongst
separate storage daemons that use independent magazines? If so, has anyone
run in to this or have a possible solution?

I can then mount a different volume and it will proceed. My problem is that
this breaks automation. I believe the root of the issue is the low number
of available volumes. I just don't understand why it tries to pick one that
isn't in the magazine. Is there a way I can configure it to wait for an
available media or does this have to be taken care of manually at this
point?

[Bacula-users] Multiple pools and volume names

2008-12-04 Thread Steve Thompson
Bacula 2.4.2.

I have just added a second pool to an all-disk configuration and have a
question concerning automatic volume numbering. The relevant details are:

Pool {
Name = Foo_Pool
Storage = Foo_Storage
Label Format = "Foo-"
...
}

Pool {
Name = Bar_Pool
Storage = Bar_Storage
Label Format = "Bar-"
...
}

Single catalog. When the second pool was added, there were 3260 volumes in
Foo_Pool (from Foo-0001 to Foo-3260). Everything works, but the first
backup that went to Bar_Pool created a volume called Bar-3261, when I was
expecting Bar-0001. Why is this?

TIA,
Steve

My feature request is still in the project file in the "New Items
since the last vote" section.

http://bacula.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/bacula/trunk/bacula/projects?view=markup

I guess a second request will no help. In the end someone has to do
the work and it seems it's not interesting enough for anyone.

After noting that my cable length is quite a bit longer than 90cm I
checked around... Just a minor nit-pick...Ultra 160's cable length is
12m and it is LVD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCSI#cite_ref-length_7-0

But anyway, one shouldn't try to drive a LVD peripheral with a single
ended SCSI controller, as Alan pointed out in another post.

   Hi to all.

   I'm in the same behavior as Hermant, this is a small feature that
could help a lot of people like us. Normally
   T. Horsnell everybody will enable HW compression over SW in a tape device.

possible and make bacula get more stronger.

The cable length includes any cabling inside the tape drive case (usually
10-20cm).

That allows U160 or LVD, but your card is U160 so that's what you'll get.

Running U160 devices as FW-scsi is usually unreliable.

Get a proper LVD HBA, this will help a lot.

I think it's an Ultra, there are only two connectors on it (plus one to
connect to the SCSI card). Actually it's configured as this :
SCSI CARD == TAPE DRIVE == TERMINATOR

Just to be sure that everything is compatible (as I'm not a SCSI
expert), the tape drive has the following interface :
- Embedded SCSI interface (Ultra160LVD, Single-ended or Low Voltage
differential)

but the SCSI cards I tested are not U160, the last one was one from
QLogic :
- QLA1020/104x Fast-Wide-SCSI "Fast!SCSI IQ" Host Adapter'

and at boot it's detected as :

sa0 at isp0 bus 0 target 5 lun 0
sa0: Removable Sequential Access SCSI-2 device
sa0: 40.000MB/s transfers (20.000MHz, offset 8, 16bit)

I hope everything is compatible (U160 vs SCSI 2 ?)

Thanks for your help,
Julien

Re: [Bacula-users] bacula stuck inserting attributes

2008-12-04 Thread Bob Hetzel

Nevermind all... The answer was
to run "mysql" then kill the offending process which was apparently
leftover from the dbcheck command. In my case the output showed it was
process 517, so I did...

mysql> kill 517 ;

That allowed bacula to continue normally.

But methinks that's a bug for dbcheck not to abort stuff properly when
you ctrl-c it. Clearly not something I would deem a high priority bug
though.

I changed ownership of bconsole to root:bacula with a mode of 0550. The
service account, apache, is a member of the bacula group. I don't use sudo.

Is that Ultra or LVD?

Ultra 160/320 single-ended scsi have maximum cable lengths in the region
of 60-90cm.

LVD is several metres.

[Bacula-users] Trying to use bpipe with 2.5.16-beta.

2008-12-04 Thread Graham Keeling
Hello,

I've been trying out bacula-2.5.16-beta, and I've tried to use bpipe to backup
my mysql database. I think that I have done everything right, having followed
the instructions on this page...
http://www.bacula.org/manuals/en/concepts/concepts/New_Features.html
...but it doesn't want to work. Perhaps somebody can give me a hint?
(Incidentally, that web page mentions a 'bpipe-dir.so', as well as a
'bpipe-fd.so', but I think that there is no 'bpipe-dir.so' - at least, I
can't find one)

I set this in my fileset (in the director config), and test that the mysqldump
command works when I run it from the command line:

FileSet {
  Name = "$NAME"
  Include {
Options {
  signature = MD5
  compression = GZIP9
}
File=/chroot/write/html
(and some others...)
Plugin = "bpipe:/var/spool/backup-out/MYSQLPIPE:mysqldump -f
--all-databases:mysql"
}

I set this in the file daemon config:

FileDaemon {
  Name = tserv.example.com-fd
  FDport = 9102
  WorkingDirectory = /var/lib/bacula
  Pid Directory = /var/run
  Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 20
  PKI Signatures = Yes
  PKI Encryption = Yes
  PKI Keypair = "/etc/bacula/bacula-client-keys-base"
  Plugin Directory = "/etc/bacula/plugins"
}

I make sure that 'bpipe-fd.so' is in /etc/bacula/plugins.
The permissions all look fine (the file daemon runs as root, so it should be
ok).
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 23485 Dec  4 15:05 bpipe-fd.so

I restart all the daemons and run my job from bconsole, which backs up all my
files OK, but at the end, I get this message come out on bconsole...

*bpipe-fd: plugin=bpipe fname=/MYSQL/regress.sql reader=mysqldump -f --opt
--databases bacula writer=mysql

...my log says this, and the Job finishes with status 'Error':

Dec  4 15:25:09  bacula-dir: tserv.example.com-fd JobId 12: Fatal error: Pipe
read error: ERR=Success

So. Any ideas?

Graham.

+1!!! Great suggestion. I know the manual states that minor number
differences do not guarantee compatibility between server and clients,
but that seems a bit convenient. How many protocol or media format
changes are there for minor version updates? I wouldn't expect a 2.x
client to be able to talk with a 1.x server, but could a 2.4 client talk
to a 2.2 server?

I also backup to tape and disk. I had to define the file set twice, only
difference is the compression option. The tape file set has compression off and
disk file set has compression on.

[Bacula-users] bacula stuck inserting attributes

2008-12-04 Thread Bob Hetzel

Hi all,

I'm using bacula 2.4.3 and I'm thinking I might have created a problem
by terminating dbcheck with ctrl-c. I had read about it taking a long
time to complete if you haven't run it in a while and don't have the
right temporary indexes created. Anyway... I didn't restart the
database server after terminating it, but then I started the bacula
daemons and now the running jobs have all been stuck with status "Dir
inserting Attributes" for 14 hrs or so. These jobs normally only take a
few minutes.

I started googling and came up with this command to see what bacula is
doing.

Can anybody tell me what my next step should be to let those backups

This may be a stupid question but, how do you know if you need to set
EOT to one or two filemarks ? Apparently this one depends of the
hardware, but I haven't seen anything in my tape manual for that ..

Sorry I did not mention that. If you just want a few files and do not
want to put the job info in the catalog that is probably better.

I think I did that in the bacula-dir.conf before I ran bscan.

Yes, I have to use "mt -f /dev/sa1.ctl seteotmodel 1" to initialize the drive.
This sometimes needs to be repeated after inserting the first tape after
booting, though it is persistent after that.

Safe yes, but SCSI problems can be somewhat random and data-specific, so the
btape tests might not detect them.

And now it's fixed! :)

Eric found the bug after looking at my tracebacks..

The fix/patch is in this email:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg03646.html

It fixed the problem for me.

I'm now able to get jobs started without bacula-sd (and bconsole) getting stuck.

I'm currently in the process of doing more complete testing..
at least initial results are good.

[Bacula-users] Bacula FD client compatibility

2008-12-04 Thread Ramūnas Vabolis
Hello there,

I was trying to find file daemon compatibility chart with director/storage
and so far did not find anything useful.
There are some small backups which are set up for quite a while, there is
quite an old version of bacula in use (1.38). Can I try to mix up older
director and newer file daemons/storage daemons? I'd like to use winbacula
2.4.3 series fd with 2.0.x series director. I can't upgrade the whole set
for now, I need a quick fix for a couple month - there is gonna be a system
upgrade after that.

Is any chart somewhere like this:
1.3.x series compatible with:
2.0.x - working
2.2.x - not compatible
2.4.x - not compatible

2.0.x series:
1.3.x - working
2.2.x - working
2.4.x - not compatible

Re: [Bacula-users] authorization errors

2008-12-04 Thread Alexandru Ionica
Hello Daniel
i have put it from 30 sec to 10 minutes

Client Connect Wait = 10 minutes

though i don't know why this should be a problem because from what i understand
this value should be taken into account from the moment the job starts, and not
while it's waiting in the queue.
In the Bacula manual (pdf one) it says:

Client Connect Wait = This directive defines an in-
 terval of time in seconds that the Storage daemon will wait for a Client
 (the File daemon) to connect. The default is 30 seconds. Be aware that
 the longer the Storage daemon waits for a Client, the more resources
 will be tied up.

Thanks.

Ok.. good to know.

To configure the SD I just did a "mt -f /dev/nsa0 geteotmodel", it
replied with 2 filemarks at EOT and then I followed the instructions of
the port maintainer (as I have almost no idea how to adjust most of
those parameters).

Anyway, if the btape tests passes with those values I can be relatively
confident that they are safe for my tape drive (and that the SCSI
cable/terminator is OK) ?

Best regards,
Julien

Despite the wording in that file, it is not true for all drives. These
options work perfectly for me on FreeBSD 4 with an HP LTO-1:

  Hardware End of Medium = no
  BSF at EOM = no
  Backward Space Record = yes
  Backward Space File = yes
  Fast Forward Space File = yes
  TWO EOF = no

[Bacula-users] Restoration problem with Version 2.4.2

2008-12-04 Thread vishal veerkar
Hello All,

I am using bacula 2.2.8 64bit for quite some time and found very stable.
Recently i have installed new server with version 2.4.2 from tarball and
taken the same config file of 2.2.8. The server started working fine but
while restoring i am facing some problem. I am using "BWX--console" GUI
based tool as well as "bconsole" for restoring. I have faced the same
problem on both for all 15 clients running on this server. The error message
while retriving from "bconsole" is as below.

Yes, several 100 GB of data. For full backups is makes no sense to use
software compression, for incremental backups to disk it would be
perfect (only few changes each day).

Didn't help :(

I think I'll continue on bacula-devel with some tracebacks etc..

Hi folks,

I've tried a bscan of the volume in question (without db modifications
as outlined in the fine manual), but during the scan bacula comes up
with tons of "unknown client" errors which are probably due to the
fact that the bacula instance I'd like to use to restore the data
doesn't know about the other instance's clients.

would it be sufficient to re-create the one client that I'm after in
the bacula instance that I use to bscan the tape? Is it somehow
possible to tell bscan or some other bacula utility to simply grab all
the files associated with a job, jobid or client off a tape and dump it
somewhere in the filesystem?

Thanks, Uwe

Re: [Bacula-users] Mount issue

2008-12-04 Thread Massimo Schenone
Hm
I have released the drive, done an inventory with "update slots scan"
and restarted the backup, then mounted the tape by hand.. now test
backup is running...

May be I'm wrong in autochanger configuration..
I set the tape drive /dev/rmt/0bn to enable dynamic size block usage
(BSD style..) ..is it correct? btape test was successful..

Another question is: may be I need to customize mtx-changer?

Thanks!
M

Does it slow your full backup down too much if you use GZIP for it as well,
instead of hardware compression?

[Bacula-users] authorization errors

2008-12-04 Thread Alexandru Ionica
Hello,
I have a Bacula setup running with 1 SD, 1 DIR and 50 clients (FDs), i have
Bacula version 2.4.0
Since a white ago i started to receive authorization errors, but they appear
from time to time.
I read http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/faq.html#AuthorizationErrors , i
increased the Maximum Concurrent Jobs to 30 in the DIR and SD but still this
errors appear from time to time, and they appear on different clients .
I have two dns servers which are master and slave for the zone i'm using on the
clients so it shouldn't be a matter in this case.

The error i receive is:

  TLS Key = /etc/bacula/certs/backup.key
}

The SD conf contains in the Storage section:

Storage {
  Name = backup-sd
  SDPort = 9103
  WorkingDirectory = "/var/lib/bacula"
  Pid Directory = "/var/run/bacula"
  Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 40
  SDAddress = 192.168.0.100
  Client Connect Wait = 30
  TLS Enable = yes
  TLS Require = yes
  TLS CA Certificate File = /etc/bacula/certs/ca.crt
  TLS Certificate = /etc/bacula/certs/backup.crt
  TLS Key = /etc/bacula/certs/backup.key
}

The problem is that i don't see it possible to have 30 concurrent jobs on the SD
due how the setup is made and how many device definitions i have in the SD.conf
.
The problem appeared when i had Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 10 and increasing to
30 didn't solve the issue as problems still appear. Of course if i want to run
the job manually it's ok and there aren't any issues.

Does anyone know what i'm doing wrong ?

Yes, apparently it's needed for FreeBSD :

gemini# pwd
/usr/ports/sysutils/bacula-server/files
gemini# cat pkg-message.server.in

NOTE:

An auto-changer manipulation script based on FreeBSDs
chio command is included and installed at

  ${PREFIX}/sbin/chio-bacula

Please have a look at it if you want to use an
autochanger. You have to configure the usage in

  ${PREFIX}/etc/bacula-dir.conf

Take care of correct permissions for changer and
tape device (e.g. /dev/ch0 and /dev/n[r]sa0) i.e.
they must be accessible by user bacula.

Due to lack of some features in the FreeBSD tape driver
implementation you MUST add some OS dependent options to
the bacula-sd.conf file:

  Hardware End of Medium = no;
  Backward Space Record  = no;
  Backward Space File= no;

With 2 filemarks at EOT (see man mt):
  Fast Forward Space File = no;
  BSF at EOM = yes;
  TWO EOF= yes;

With 1 filemarks at EOT (see man mt):
  Fast Forward Space File = yes;
  BSF at EOM = no;
  TWO EOF   = no;

NOTE: YOU CAN SWITCH EOT model ONLY when starting
  from scratch with EMPTY tapes.

It is also important that all the scripts accessed
by RunBeforeJob and RunAfterJob will be executed by
the user bacula. Check your permissions.

For USB support read the bacula manual. It could be necessary
to configure/compile a new kernel.

Look at ${PREFIX}/share/bacula/update_bacula_tables for
database update procedure. Details can be found in the
ReleaseNotes

  Please read this file:

%%DOCSDIR%%/ReleaseNotes

  as installed by docs port for the upgrade procedure.

IMPORTANT UPGRADE NOTES FOR THIS RELEASE:

- bacula-client and bacula-server do not need to be simultaneously
upgraded.

Read the ReleaseNotes for further information.

I remember that there has been some discussion on the list about these
options. I can't remember if they are necessary with your OS but they
were frequently the cause of problems.

Maybe this (old) thread can help you.

need the switch to add the volume name to the new catalog on top of
the files and jobs.

Re: [Bacula-users] bacula hang waiting for storage

2008-12-04 Thread Julien Cigar
Hi Ralf, here is my config :

Device {
  Name = "Sony SDX-700C"
  Media Type = "AIT"
  Archive Device = "/dev/nsa0"
  Device Type = tape
  Autochanger = no
  Always Open = yes
  Volume Poll Interval = 1 hour
  Removable Media = yes
  Random Access = no
  Requires Mount = no
  Hardware End of Medium = no
  Backward Space Record  = no
  Backward Space File= no
  Fast Forward Space File = no
  BSF at EOM = yes
  Two EOF = yes
  Close on Poll= yes
  Offline on Unmount = yes
}

To label a new tape I do the following :
# mt -f /dev/nsa0 rewind
# mt -f /dev/nsa0 weof 2
# bconsole
* label
*

Regarding the hardware problem I'm 100% sure that it doesn't come from
the SCSI card (I tried with 2 differents, an Adaptec and a QSI), it
doesn't come from the tape drive too because I had the same problem in
the past with a Sony SDX 500C, the medias are OK too (sometimes it fails
with a media that didn't fail in a previous rotation cycle), and I
tested with another SCSI cable too. The only thing I haven't changed is
the SCSI terminator ..
What's strange is that all the it happens randomly (it could run 5+ jobs
without any problem).

Best regards,
Julien

Yes. I did.

To solve the issue I tried to mount via shell command: mtx load 36
then inside bconsole: mount slot=36
however bacula is not able to append data, device is open but pointer is
at the beginning of the media:

Anything in baculas logfile? Regarding masquerading, if I'm right the
SD needs to send the attributes to the DIR. Is this possible with
your setup?

I can't imagine that bacula can cause this kernel errors. This looks
like a hardware problem to me.

Can you post your bacula config for this device (I can't find it in
the thread right now) and maybe try what was suggested in this thread:

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.sysutils.backup.bacula.general/39365

Hi John,

do you recall the bscan syntax you used for the import? It's a 400G
medium so I'd like to get it right the first time ;-)

Would it be possible to simply copy the entire tape to disk using

cp /dev/nst0 /mnt/raid/OFFLINE01

and then work with the OFFLINE01 file for faster access?

All the best & thanks again for your help,

Have you run an 'update slots' command after loading the tapes into

This is not possible right now. I did send a feature request about
this earlier this year.

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.sysutils.backup.bacula.general/41299

But it seems to be lost, I can't find it in the current file where the
feature requests are collected.

Hmm.. 1192 could be it, yeah..

I'll try to patch my bacula-sd with that patch.

I ordered new SCSI HBA, so I can try with the (shorter) SCSI cable that came
with the
tape library. My current HBA doesn't have correct connectors, so I need to swap
it.

Let's see if that helps..

[Bacula-users] Mount issue

2008-12-04 Thread Massimo Schenone
Hi all,
I have bacula 2.2.8 on Solaris 10 (package downloaded from

Bacula looks like working properly until it needs a tape from a

I recreated the problem running a backup: bacula asks for manual mount..
