Fatal error: File daemon at 192.168.0.13:9102rejected Hello command

Hi does anyone have any news on this? If not, If a developer could contact
me, I'm willing to lend out a test environment to get this possible bug
fixed, getting full support for win2008 would be great, same with virtual
environments (vmware in my case).

So if you are a developer please contact me and I'll lend you a VPS with
2008 for testing.

I dont think it has anything to do with the networkconnection, I've tried to
disable the firewall but still had the same issue.

Is there someone who know how the hello code work?

Somebody else mentioned that the same problem occured with 64-bit Vista.
As far as I know, Windows 2008 is primarily 64 bit (although there is a
32-bit version available). Maybe it helps if you can use Wireshark or
similar to see what is actually being sent/received?

Stefan Eriksson wrote:
 Yes I can telnet 192.168.0.13 on port 9102 with no problem so the port is
 open,
 As for vmware networking, it shouldnt be an issue as it works great with
 windows 2003.
 And I dont think its a fw issue as I've completely turned of the firewall
 and still no go.

 As for connections, the bacula server do connect, I get a standard error
if
 I disable the networking device on the client.

 Maybe this is a bug, thinking win2008 is rather new

 Hello I'm getting this error with the client using windows 2008.

 I have the correct password etc as its not the same error message, does
 anyone know what this error means and how to fix it? I've googled it
and
 there's not much info about it.

 Sounds like you had a too tight firewall in the client machine?

 Suspected that, but which type of package is the hello message, I suspect
 its not on a specific port. More like a echo request.

 I don't know the Bacula's protocol for sure, but I guess Hello is a
token
 the director uses when trying to establish a connection with a file daemon
 that is expected to listen at the spesific port. Something similar like
HELO
 / EHLO to port 25 when opening a connection to a mail server. The Bacula
 Developer Manual could be your friend to find it out more closely.

 Do you get the same error message if you turn off the file daemon (or
 disconnect the network cable or...)? If that's the case, it looks like now
 the director does not get any reply from the file daemon either, and it
 could be a firewall (or some other networking) issue.

 If your client is running on a virtual machine on vmware, is vmware set
for
 bridged networking and the ip address belongs to the virtual machine
alone?
 Have you tried to port scan that ip, is there anyone listening at all in
the
 port 9102?

Hi all,

[Bacula-users] schedule writing and spooling on different drives and spool directorys

2008-12-09 Thread Stefan Lubitz
Hi all,

I have a Tapeloader with 2 drives and a backupserver with a huge spool
directory.
Now I thought it would be nice to schedule the different drives and the
time when it spools to have allways a maximum on network load and keep
the time which is needed for the backup as short as possible.
For example:
1. Backup job1 starts spooling data from server1 to \serv\spool1
2. drive1 starts writing after job1 stops spooling. At the same time
Backup job2 starts spooling data from server2 to \serv\spool2
3. When drive1 has finished writing, it starts with despooling.
4. When Job2 has finished spooling, it starts writing to tape2. At the
same time job1 or another job starts spooling again

At the moment the jobs can start parallel and they need to share the 1GB
Network. After spooling, there is no more traffic on the
network.. This seems to be inefficient
ende?lp=endep=thMx..search=inefficient to me.

Would this be a good solution and is this possible in bacula? What do
you think?

Regards,
Stefan

Re: [Bacula-users] The number of files mismatch!

2008-12-09 Thread Stefan Lubitz
Hi Julien,

this tapes were empty when I added the EOT.
To explain:
I made a full backup to tape mba022, added the EOT and wrote an inc in a
different pool (for example tape mba056). This was working. The next inc
to tape mba056 failed.

 I havent had time to dig more into it, but it seems like the storage
 daemon actually cached the slot number from the catalog, making
 update-slots not effective even it ran correctly and updated the slots.

Might be. Currently I try to restart everything every day before the
backup is supposed to start, and I have the impression that it fails less
likely. I'll do this every day the next week, if backups run, then we know
it is probably a caching problem.

My other idea is to downgrade to a 2.2 release and to hope that the
problem doesn't exist there.

Hi Stefan,

I've got nearly the same error after upgrading my backupserver running
OpenSuSE 10.3 from 2Gb to 4Gb of RAM and modifying some parameters in
BIOS regarding the handling of memorymapped IO. After installing a new
big-smp kernel everythings works ok again. I didn't need to modify any
bacula parameters.

[Bacula-users] usb disk change

2008-12-09 Thread lore
Hi all,
For my first time I've to manage a bacula server (i'm a really
newbie). The system use usb disk to write the volumes backup and the
catalog.
Last friday i've changed the usb disk because was full. I've done the follow
unmount /dev/...
stop bacula-dir
stop bacula-sd
stop bacula.fd
mount /dev/...
start fd
start sd
start dir
Every services stared correctly but the backup didn't work.
In the scripts directory i've found same scripts like close_disk.sh,
but I really don't know what they do and I don't want do a disaster
Could someone let me know the steps to correctly change the usb disk?

Thanks a lot in advance

Lorenzo

[Bacula-users] scratch pool question

2008-12-09 Thread Ulrich Leodolter
Hello,

I've a question about Scratch pool.
first lets define pools:

Pool {
  Name = PoolA
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes
  RecyclePool = Scratch
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 3 weeks
  Volume Use Duration = 1 week
  Maximum Volume Bytes = 100G
  Label Format = File-
}

Pool {
  Name = PoolB
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes
  RecyclePool = Scratch
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 3 weeks
  Volume Use Duration = 1 week
  Maximum Volume Bytes = 100G
  Label Format = File-
}

Now assume backup jobs alternate weekly between these pools

w01w02w03w04   ...
PoolA  PoolB  PoolA  PoolB ...

What happens at w04 if bacula needs a new volume for PoolB ?

Will bacula recycle volumes from PoolA (w01) into Scratch
and then move into PoolB ?

Thanks
Ulrich

[Bacula-users] Bacula-dir 2..4.3 scheduling

2008-12-09 Thread Ferdinando Pasqualetti
Hello List,

I am using rev 2.4.3 since more then a month and I found that some
scheduled jobs disappear completely, as if they where not sheduled at
all.. I was not able to find a rule for that, apart from the fact it
normally happen durin the weekend, when the largest number of jobs are
scheduled.

I mean disappear because no logn of failure exist, but if I do a list
jobname I find the correct scheduling for the job, but no trace of
execution, good or bad.

This message is just to know if someone else is experiencing this problem.

My bacula environment is on an HP Proliant 4-way 64 bit kernel and
bacula-mysql-2.4.3-1.x86_64.rpm built and installed locally on a RHEL 5.2.

[Bacula-users] Changed pool name - volumes are gone

2008-12-09 Thread Tobias Walkowiak
I just changed the pool names in the director configuration, deleted the old
pools and now I can't assign the existing (labeled) tapes to the pools.

'list volumes' in the bconsole and 'list media' shows no results to any pool.
when trying to 'label pool=IncrementalPool slots=4-6 barcodes' I get the error
message 3920 Cannot label Volume because it is already labeled for each
tape.

Does anybody have an idea how to use my labeled tape for the new pools?

TIA
Tobias

IIRC, Bacula will refuse to label tapes that already have a Bacula
label on them.

To re-use labeled tapes, I write a quick script to load each tape with
mtx, write an EOF with mt, rewind, load next...

(This will of course destroy the data on the tape.)

Then label barcodes in bconsole.

[Bacula-users] Could not Stat errors

2008-12-09 Thread Kelly, Brian
I running version 2.4.2 on the server side. I'm running client version 2.0.2
on Windows with Volume Shadow copy enabled. I've been noticing Could not
stat errors on a random basis on random computers.

1. When I check the file systems on these computers the files exist and the
permissions are normal. System has full control. The bacula client is
running as a service. This is not indicative of a permissions problem.
2. There are no major issues after running chkdsk. Just a few entries in the
MFT that need cleaned up. Par for the course on Windows XP after running a
chkdsk on a healthy system.
3. No errors in the event logs indicating a problem with Volume Shadow copy.
4. There are no errors in the event logs indicating bad sectors.
5. I see no event log entries from bacula-fd in the Application Log during the
time the backup is running.
5. I thought maybe there was some sort of Disk I/O contention which I could
see happening if a virus scan is running but the logs indicate that a full
virus scan is not running while the backup is occurring.
6. If I re-run a full backup on the computers throwing the errors they do
not repeat the second time around.

I did notice that bacula throws an error when I attempt to stop the service:

[Bacula-users] Time for change

2008-12-09 Thread Brian Debelius
Hello,

  I am currently running Ubuntu. The bacula director and sd are on this

directly to tape. I want to change how I am backing up. I would like to
have some period of time of disk backups, and have them

Should I consider linux software raid. or use a hardware raid adapter?
If software does the cpu choice have much of an impact?

I am thinking of configuring the disk as follows:
  One OS and database disk, maybe a mirror
  Two disks in raid 0 for spooling, and recovering
  Three or more disks in raid 5 for the sd storage.

Thoughts or comments on this?
Thanks

Re: [Bacula-users] multi drive changer, limit concurrent jobs for each drive

2008-12-09 Thread Ralf Gross
Hi,

I hate to reply to my own mail, but does nobody have an idea about
what I'm trying to do? ;)

If not, I'll submit an feature request. Because I think it is more
important to limit the number of concurent jobs on the drives, than on
the changer.

Ralf Gross schrieb:

 Hi,

 I have a 3 drive autochanger (bacula 2.2.8). Right now I configure
 each job to use one of the 3 drives, not the changer device.

   Address =
   SDPort = 9103
   Password = wiped
   Device = Neo4100
   Media Type = LTO4
   Autochanger = yes
   Heartbeat Interval = 5min
   Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 3
 }

 Storage {
   Name = Neo4100-LTO4-D1
   Address =
   SDPort = 9103
   Password = wiped
   Device = ULTRIUM-TD4-D1
   Media Type = LTO4
   Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 1

 [2 more drives]

 And in the client's job config I then use

 Storage = Neo4100-LTO4-D1
 or
 Storage = Neo4100-LTO4-D2

 Now I would like to go back to the more typical bacula approach, where I use
 the changer device in the client's job config.

 But I don't want concurrent jobs running on each drive. I want that it's
 possible to run 3 jobs on the changer (one for each drive), but only one on
 each drive at the same time.

 I could achieve that with different Priorities, but then these jobs are
 blocking jobs which are using other storage devices.

 Any ideas?

 Ralf

In linux, I find this to be completely wrong. I have 15TB of software
raid 6 and the most load that it puts on the cpu is around 7% and
these are raid arrays that net over 200MB/s writes on single core
systems that are 3 or so years old.

In windows software raid performance sucks so you need a hardware card there.

Re: [Bacula-users] Time for change

2008-12-09 Thread thing

Normally I would say,

1) Performance generally ie cpu hit is not a huge issue IMHO,
especially with todays dual and quad core cpus...and of course ram is
dirt cheap.
2) For me the big issues is Ive lost software raid sets from power
failures for a backup partition that's probably no biggeeunless
of course your data partition and your backup partition are both
software raided...and you loose both at once...

From whats posted the backup system is seperate from the production
servers, in which case software raid would be fine IMHO. If its lost,
the data should be available on tape and on the production
serversthe proviso is that you backup to disk overnight and then
immediately spool to tape..which could be during the day.

Steven

Re: [Bacula-users] Time for change

2008-12-09 Thread John Drescher
 So what do you think a reasonable cpu for bacula would be?

Depends on what level of performance you are looking for. My director
is a 2 processor 2GHz opteron machine (circa 2003) with 4 GB of memory
and 18 or so x 250 GB SATA 1 drives in raid 6. My main storage daemon
is on a second machine with the same cpus and ram but only 5 x 250 GB
SATA drives and the storage is a 2 drive x 24 slot LTO 2 autochanger.
Right now the bacula database is on that machine but it has been on
yet another machine. On top of that a typical SATA fileserver will be
a desktop class 2.5GHz Athlon X2  with 4 or 8GB of memory and 5 to 10
750 GB Segate SATA2 drives in raid 6 using mostly the motherboard sata
ports. This type of machine will net 300MB/s writes and even higher
reads in xfs. At 300 MB/s writes the cpu usage never goes above 7% for
the raid under normal conditions. Replacing a drive will make it go to
around 20% of 1 cpu until the drive is re synced.

/etc/bacula/bacula-fd.conf:  Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 20

That lets the director run a max of three jobs at once, and it runs one
each on my three drives.

 I also have a library with 3 drives. Looking at my config, I have it
 set to 3 in my Device in bacula-dir.conf and 20 in my Storage in
 bacula-sd.conf

So your config for the changer is the same?

I tried the above config, but bacula started 2 concurrent jobs on the
same _drive._ Both jobs use the same pool. I can't use spooling,
because the jobs are each backing up ~10 TB of data. Spooling would
just take too much time. So both jobs write to the same tape and I
would like to avoid this.

 # grep Maximum /etc/bacula/bacula-*.conf

Re: [Bacula-users] Please mount volume

2008-12-09 Thread kshatriyak
 Might be. Currently I try to restart everything every day before the
 backup is supposed to start, and I have the impression that it fails less
 likely.

Today I restarted my server completely and the tape didn't get mounted
either.

I've tried (in bconsole) :

update slots
mount (then I choose Autochanger, then slot 1 (where the tape resides)):

   2: Autochanger
Select Storage resource (1-2): 2
Enter autochanger slot: 1
3001 OK mount. Device=AIT4-1 (/dev/nst0)

The tape remained in slot 1 (i've checked the status seperately with:

# mtx -f /dev/sg0 status

to be sure.

Then, on the command prompt, I manually entered the command:

# /usr/local/bacula/etc/mtx-changer /dev/sg0 load 1 /dev/nst0 0

The tape got loaded, I've tried the command 'mount' in Bacula again, and
bacula started writing to the tape.

Before this command, the tape wasn't accessed or used at all so it can't
be that the tape was busy. Also, in my mtx-changer script i've put sleep
60 everywhere now to ensure that a busy drive can't make problems (which
was my first thought).

So it looks there is a bug in Bacula, on some condition, Bacula doesn't
execute the mtx-changer command. The only problem is to find on which
condition, because sometimes the backup just runs fine...

The first thing I'll do now is to let the mtx-changer program write a
timestamp to a file, so I know for sure the mtx-changer program doesn't
get executed at all, before I post this to the bacula-bugs database.

K.

Re: [Bacula-users] volume management on a storage File

2008-12-09 Thread Lukasz Szybalski
 prune
 The Prune command allows you to safely remove expired database
 records from Jobs and Volumes. This command works only on the
 Catalog database and does not affect data written to Volumes. In all
 cases, the Prune command applies a retention period to the specified
 records. You can Prune expired File entries from Job records; you can
 Prune expired Job records from the database, and you can Prune both
 expired Job and File records from specified Volumes.
 prune files—jobs—volume client=client-name volume=volumename
 For a Volume to be pruned, the VolStatus must be Full, Used, or
 Append, otherwise the pruning will not take place.

 purge

 The Purge command will delete associated Catalog database records
 from Jobs and Volumes without considering the retention period.
 Purge works only on the Catalog database and does not affect data
 written to Volumes. This command can be dangerous because you can
 delete catalog records associated with current backups of files, and we
 recommend that you do not use it unless you know what you are doing.
 The permitted forms of purge are:
 purge files jobid=jobid—job=job-name—client=clientname
 purge jobs client=client-name (of all jobs)
 purge volume—volume=vol-name (of all jobs)
 For the purge command to work on Volume Catalog database records
 the VolStatus must be Append, Full, Used, or Error.
 The actual data written to the Volume will be unaffected by this command.

 Afterwards, delete the actual physical file if you need to recover the disk
 space.

Can you guys give me an example on how to do this.
My full backup on a new volume is done.

now I would like to delete either everything older then december 1st
or if I can't then the whole old volume.

1. How can I find out what is the VolStatus ? what command gives me that?
2. I have to switch it to full, how can i do that?
3. Do I have any options to delete actual files from the volume aka.
anything older then dec. 1st delete files and catalog data?

Thanks,
Lucas

I was looking into making queries for a particular file in a Bacula Postgres

 *NEVER* use software RAID if you can avoid it. Software RAID puts a

Perhaps this applies to some versions of RAID and some implementations

I use gmirror on all my machines at home.

That said, I also have hardware RAID-1.

BTW, the reason for this is purging a volume will not reduce the size

its best to delete the old and start with new volumes.

Re: [Bacula-users] volume management on a storage File

2008-12-09 Thread John Drescher
 I already have a new volume with full backup, so now I want to purge
 the old volume, then delete it and then delete the actual file
 (750GB). Is that how it works?

 purge volume=myoldnotusedvolume
 then
 delete volume=myoldnotusedvolume
 then

delete volume=myoldnotusedvolume

 take our the myoldnotusedvolume out of the configuration files or rm
 myoldnotusedvolume ?

then
open a terminal and use rm to delete the volume file.

There should be no reference to any specific volume in your configuration files.

Thanks. I will do that then.
I see you didn't do a purge before delete. Is that because delete will
do the purge automatically ?

Yes, delete removes all records of the volume that are in the
database, including the file and job records. So purging is not
necessary.

BTW, If anyone sees this example. It is from my home computer and not
the work network that I talk about most. Here at home there is only 2
real backup jobs and the rest is just for testing things. That is why
I could easily delete a volume.
