[Bacula-users] update slots doesn't handle removed volumes

2008-12-19 Thread Robert Horton
Hi,

I've noticed that running update slots marks as added any volumes
which have been added to the autochanger but doesn't mark as removed any
which have been removed. Here's a sample output:

*update slots
Automatically selected Storage: Autochanger
Connecting to Storage daemon Autochanger at ford:9103 ...
3306 Issuing autochanger slots command.
Device Autochanger has 47 slots.
Connecting to Storage daemon Autochanger at ford:9103 ...

Catalog record for Volume 17L4 updated to reference slot 15.
Catalog record for Volume 16L4 updated to reference slot 19.
Catalog record for Volume 18L4 updated to reference slot 20.
Catalog record for Volume 09L4 updated to reference slot 34.
Catalog record for Volume 04L4 updated to reference slot 35.
Catalog record for Volume 01L4 updated to reference slot 36.
Catalog record for Volume 06L4 updated to reference slot 41.
Catalog record for Volume 07L4 updated to reference slot 42.
Catalog record for Volume 03L4 updated to reference slot 44.

I seem to remember in the past that it listed all the slots, including
empty ones but don't have anything else to compare against.

As a workaround I've been setting InChanger to 0 for all media in the
database and then running update slots.

It's a Dell TL4000 and bacula 2.4.3.

Any thoughts?

[Bacula-users] Mixing tape and file backup same host

2008-12-19 Thread GATOUILLAT Pierre-Damien
Hello,

I would like to make daily backup of one host to disk and a weekly

other way ? Otherwise, do I have to define a new host for the weekly
tape backup ?

I'm using bacula 2.2.8 on Debian.

Thanks.

2008-12-19 Thread JanJaap Scholing

Hi,

Yes, its posible. You have to make two pools.

one with the file storage and one with the tape storage.
And make 2 schedules (tape and file storage) and define in the schedule the
pool on witch you want to backup.

regards,

Well, obviously it doesn't.

Nor to the storage daemon.

   Termination:*** Backup Error ***

So it's not really a surprise that the backup job didn't work.

 18-Dez 23:15 BUS JobId 17: message.c:482 Mail prog: bsmtp: bsmtp.c:435 Fatal

Sending notification mail didn't work either.

 /etc/bacula/scripts/make_catalog_backup_awk -v cat1=BUSCatalog
 /etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf

That command line doesn't look right. The angle brackets around
BUSCatalog would be interpreted by the shell as file
redirections and overwrite your director configuration file.

 18-Dez 23:15 BUS JobId 18: BeforeJob: awk:
 /etc/bacula/scripts/make_catalog_backup_awk:3:^ syntax error

Your AWK script is broken, too.

 Any help, or suggestions would be much appreciated!!!

I'm afraid your installation is thoroughly messed up.
Connection refused typically means the daemon in question isn't
even running. (Though there are other possible reasons.) That, as
well as the syntax errors in your configuration files and scripts,
seems to indicate you missed some crucial steps during installation.

My best recommendation would be to start over, closely following
the instructions and checking every step very carefully to make
sure you got it right. In particular, check whether you can
reach all the daemons and try a simple manual backup before
proceeding to create scheduled jobs and customized scripts.

If you need more help, please post essential information about
your environment, like machines and network topology involved,
operating system(s), Bacula version(s), how you installed and
configured it.

No I backup catalog on hard disk, because I put backup of some computers
on the disk. I have some kind of mixed backup. Should I reduce Maximum
Volume Jobs to 1 for tape, because on every tape it will be really only
one job?

Riho

Did you label your volume with the directive Maximum Volume Jobs = 2 set ? You can check it with
llist media (llist with two l) and look at the Maximum Volume Jobs line. You can update this with
the update command.

Hope that help.

Hi!

I am useing daily tape rotation. I change tape every day and
useing Full
backup Level on each tape. Each tape has it's own volume and vaolume
retention time is 6 days and 12 days for friday tape (I have
2 of friday
tapes). Point is that after retention time Bacula
automatically purges
volume and makes tape writable again, so after every 7 days
bacula would
write brand new data to tape. But it don't do this, it marks tape

This looks good and should work.

 But in the job config of the client, we have to set one pool
 directive, we can't set two pools. (I tried it but bacula complains
 with error)

You need just one pool here, the pool that will be used comes from the
Run line in your schedule resource. This will override the settings in
your job resource.

 Job {
 Name = client
 Client = client-fd
 Type = Backup
 FileSet = FileSet-coheris-tgv

 #Pool = Weekly
 Storage = HP_LTO2
 Storage = File
 Schedule = NightlySave
 Write Bootstrap = /var/lib/bacula/client.bsr

 When I ask list nextvol for the client :
 Could not find next Volume for Job client (Pool=Weekly, Level=Full).

I would try a testbackup, maybe change the schedule for this, so that
you don't have to wait a whole day for the incremantal backup.

[Bacula-users] Possible to back up from a VMWare-loop mounted partition? (vmware-mount zombie)

2008-12-19 Thread David L. Lambert
We're looking at using Bacula to back up the contents of VMware virtual
machines from snapshots of the filesystem containing the VMDK file. In
particular, we have a test instance of FreeNAS in a VMware virtual
machine, and a server running Bacula that makes snapshots and performs
from-snapshot and from-client backups reliably (although more slowly
than we would like).

I wrote a BeforeJob script like the following:

## (omitting our standard command that makes and mounts a snapshot)

sudo mount /mnt/iofreenastest  -o  remount,rw

yes | sudo /opt/vmware-server/bin/vmware-mount.pl \

 /mnt/iofreenastest/FreeNAS.vmdk 6 /mnt/freenas-6 \

   -o ufstype=5xbsd,ro

sleep 3

mount | grep 'on /mnt/freenas-6'  || exit 1

However, when the job ran, the director never picked up after the
BeforeJob. A few hours later, I checked on it. Here's what some of ps
aefx looked like:

17247 ?Ssl2:02 /usr/sbin/bacula-dir -c
/etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf -

19430 ?Z  0:00  \_ [freenas_before] defunct

19575 ?S  0:00 sh -c '/opt/vmware-server/bin/vmware-loop' -q
'/mnt/i

19576 ?S  0:01  \_ /opt/vmware-server/bin/vmware-loop -q
/mnt/iofree

19577 ?S  0:00  \_ /opt/vmware-server/bin/vmware-loop -q
/mnt/io

(there was a yes process in there as well, but it has scrolled off my
screen)

I tried unsticking it by killing the yes process and the sh process,
both with no effect. Killing the vmware-loop process got it going
again, but of course that unmounted the directory I wanted to back up,
and actually caused the job to fail:

I guess the vmware-loop process is still somehow related to the
director, which is why Bacula hung. Has anyone gotten Bacula to mount
and back up an idle VMDK file, either with vmware-mount.pl or invoking
vmware-loop directly, or by some other program?

[Bacula-users] status director and scheduled jobs

2008-12-19 Thread Carlo Maesen

I have several tapes in several pools. I use Volume Use Duration = 23 hours
for each pool.
Sometimes when I run the stat dir command within the bconsole, I see
*unknown* for the scheduled jobs volume. That's because all volumes in the pool
have status used. The moment the backup starts, he changed the status to
purged for the expired volumes. Is there a way I can display the correct output
for scheduled jobs volume without manually pruning the expired volumes ?.
It would be handy because I have no library.

Bacula 2.4.3 CentOS 5.2

Thanks in advance

 Are you having that many clients or is it actually larger volumes that have
 been split up in smaller filesets?

Mostly larger volumes broken into 1Tb filesets. There are about 150
desktop boxes being backed up but their load is minor.

 Yes, I use spooling even for our +2TB volumes.

I hope you've benchmarked restore times. Between the sheer volume of data
and the possibilities of several million files, we settled on 1Tb as a
workable unit for current technology and even that's had trouble when
restoring some filesystems (10 million file restores make Bacula-dir
unhappy!)

  250Tb startup, 1Pb within 18 months, and growing past that. Filesizes
  measured in tens of Mb apiece.

 Still over Gigabit netwok or do you have better infrastructure?

Right now the links are Gb, with some LACP overlaying being done, but as
this larger fileset comes online most stuff will be moved to 8Gb/s fibre
(IP over F/O) and 10Gb/s ethernet. Prices on this gear (especially
switches!) are falling fast so it makes sense to not deploy until actually
needed.

[Bacula-users] documentation templates

2008-12-19 Thread jouni.kivilahti+bacula-users

Hi,

If anyone has a documentation template for especially suitable for documenting
a Bacula implementation, preferably some standards- based or following ITIL
guidelines.. and of course, if it's license permits it, please contribute it.

I know, this might sound a pretty stupid for some of you (if it does, do not
waste time answering to this message), but it would REALLY save time from many
of us. Not everyone (me including) have studied the ITIL books through, so this
kind of contribution would also bring some credibility for business users.

The advantage of a C stored procedure is speed:

bacula=# SELECT MAX('a'||bacula_lstat_mtime(lstat)) FROM file WHERE
fileid100 ;
max

Time: 70.689 ms
bacula=# SELECT MAX(base64_decode_lstat(12,lstat)*interval '1 second' +

Yes, for sure but it's also a bit more complex to install...

To speedup things (for reading), it's also possible to create an index (i will
add the IMMUTABLE parameter)

[Bacula-users] Problem in recycle file

2008-12-19 Thread Samuel Rios Carvalho
Hello,

I use the media device below:

Device {
  Name = FileStorage
  Media Type = File
  Archive Device = /mnt/backup/
  LabelMedia = yes;
  Random Access = Yes;
  AutomaticMount = Yes;
  RemovableMedia = No;
  AlwaysOpen = No;
}

And all jobs are 15 days of retentions.

My pools' configuration:

Pool {
  Name = Default
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 15 days
  Use Volume Once = yes
}

But after 30 days, or 45 days, etc, my file in /mnt/backup is growing. Some
ideia? Ever I have that remove volume and recreate in the hand. I don't want
it. Recycle isn't working.

Remember that volume retention period begins after a volume is marked
Full or Used.

Unless you limit its size or usage (which you have not done) it will
grow till the disk fills up because it will not be marked Full or
Used. Activating your volume retention period.
