[Bacula-users] Bacula and Solaris 10_x86

2007-06-13 Thread Shon Stephens
I have no previous experience with Bacula. I am in the process of evaluating
Bacula for use in our environment. I'd like to know

Does Bacula and its supporting programs compile/run on Solaris 10_x86?
Does Bacula/MTX work on Solaris 10_x86? Has anyone used it with an Exabyte
Magnum 224 LTO Library? Mine only has the 1 LTO-3 drive.

Thanks,
Shon

[Bacula-users] Does Bacula require MySQL locally?

2007-06-14 Thread Shon Stephens
I understand that the libraries are needed to compile support for MySQL into
Bacula, but can I configure Bacula to use a MySQL server that isn't on the
localhost?

Thank you,
Shon

[Bacula-users] Using CSWbacula package from Blastwave, is mtx supported?

2007-06-20 Thread Shon Stephens

I didn't see a package for mtx in the Blastwave list, so I'm entirely
unsure. I'm new to Bacula and testing it for fit in my environment. First
priority is to see if its going to work w/ our Exabyte Magnum 224 LTO tape
library. I was wondering since mtx is not in a Blastwave package, can it
still be integrated w/ Bacula from that package?

Also, if anyone is using an Exabyte Magnum 224 and wants to share their
experience, I'll buy you a beer ;)

Thanks,
Shon

Re: [Bacula-users] Using CSWbacula package from Blastwave, is mtx supported?

2007-06-21 Thread Shon Stephens

John,
Thanks for the reply. I'm testing this on a Solaris x86 platform.
Blastwave is a software repository that can be accessed with pkg-get to
install precompiled binary packages onto Solaris systems. My Magnum 224 only
has 1 LTO-3 drive. What I am having issue with at the moment is what device
to configure in my Autochangers resource, or how to even tell what the robot
is recognized as. My system sees the tape drive itself as /dev/rmt/0 (with
all the associated 0ln, 0l, 0b, etc...)

I am not sure what Blastwave is but I have been using a 2 drive LTO2
Exabyte Magnum 224 with bacula under 64 bit gentoo linux for just over a
year now. I have recorded around 10TB of data on the archive and for the
most part it works great with bacula. In the past I had drive locking
problems with bacula 1.38.X. There have also been some issues with
suboptimal usage of the two drives (see the list archives) but this appears
to be fixed in the 2.1 series.

[Bacula-users] Need help configuring Autochanger - call to Solaris_x86 users

2007-06-26 Thread Shon Stephens

Hello all,
I'm new to Bacula and am evaluating it for use in my environment on a
Solaris 10_x86 system. My tape device is recognized by the system as
/dev/rmt/0. However I have not been able to identify the device associated
with the changer. Can someone help me in identifying the device?
I have an Exabyte Magnum 224. It has 1 magazine and 1 LTO-3 drive. If
you have this library, will you consider sharing your mtx-changer script
with me?

Thank you,

[Bacula-users] Need advice on adapting mtx-changer for Exabyte Magnum 224

2007-06-28 Thread Shon Stephens

All,
I was able to get the changer recognzied as /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1 on
my Solaris 10_x86 system. Setup /kernel/drv/sgen.conf, loaded the driver,
created the devlinks, and we're off. My Magnum 224 has 1 robot, and 1 LTO-3
drive. It holds can hold up to 24 tapes in 2 magazines. I currently have 1
fully loaded, 12 tape magazine installed.

I'm now trying to get mtx-changer script working correctly by following
the "Autochanger Resource" ,
http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/Autochanger_Resource1.html, chapter of the
User Guide. Some commands work, others don't. I tested all functions
directly with mtx, and with the mtx-changer script. Mtx does perform all the
operations correctly. It can load, unload, list, transfer, etc... However,
as I said, some of the mtx-changer script functions aren't working
correctly. I am unsure whether or not they need to work with the exact
syntax described in the chapter, or if the commands will work, but with an
expanded syntax (like the Changer Command) and bacula will function
correctly.

I peformed the mtx-changer tests in the same order as the guide, using
its sytax. I also use a full command line to test if that works. In cases
where the output isn't what I expected, I tried using mtx directly.

First the mtx-changer "list" command
./mtx-changer /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1 list 0 /dev/rmt/0 0
1:Full:VolumeTag=A1
2:Full:VolumeTag=A2
3:Full:VolumeTag=A3
4:Full:VolumeTag=A4
5:Full:VolumeTag=A5
6:Full:VolumeTag=A6
7:Full:VolumeTag=A7
8:Full:VolumeTag=A8
9:Full:VolumeTag=A9
10:Full:VolumeTag=A00010
11:Full:VolumeTag=A00011

I know I have a fully loaded magazine in the library, so I check with mtx.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: mtx -f /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1 status
 Storage Changer /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1:1 Drives, 12 Slots ( 1
Import/Export )
Data Transfer Element 0:Empty
 Storage Element 1:Full :VolumeTag=A1
 Storage Element 2:Full :VolumeTag=A2
 Storage Element 3:Full :VolumeTag=A3
 Storage Element 4:Full :VolumeTag=A4
 Storage Element 5:Full :VolumeTag=A5
 Storage Element 6:Full :VolumeTag=A6
 Storage Element 7:Full :VolumeTag=A7
 Storage Element 8:Full :VolumeTag=A8
 Storage Element 9:Full :VolumeTag=A9
 Storage Element 10:Full :VolumeTag=A00010

 Storage Element 11:Full :VolumeTag=A00011

 Storage Element 12 IMPORT/EXPORT:Full :VolumeTag=A00012

I checked the mtx-changer script and can see whats happening, but am not
quite sure what the best way to remedy this is...

Next the slots command, which works with the syntax from the guide.
./mtx-changer /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1 slots 0 /dev/rmt/0 0
12

Testing unload with the syntax of the guide produced:
./mtx-changer /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1 unload
usage: mtx-changer ctl-device command [slot archive-device drive-index]
   Insufficient number of arguments arguments given.
 Command expected 5 arguments

So I tried with a full command:
./mtx-changer /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1 unload 0 /dev/rmt/0 0
Unloading Data Transfer Element into Storage Element 0...mtx: Request Sense:
Long Report=yes

This makes sense as there is no tape in the drive.

The load command appears to work:
./mtx-changer /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1 load 3 /dev/rmt/0 0

And loaded proves so:
./mtx-changer /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1 loaded 0 /dev/rmt/0 0
3

Before I ran the next mtx-changer test in the guide, I wanted to see what
the list command and mtx status output showed.
./mtx-changer /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1 list 0 /dev/rmt/0 0
1:Full:VolumeTag=A1
2:Full:VolumeTag=A2
4:Full:VolumeTag=A4
5:Full:VolumeTag=A5
6:Full:VolumeTag=A6
7:Full:VolumeTag=A7
8:Full:VolumeTag=A8
9:Full:VolumeTag=A9
10:Full:VolumeTag=A00010
11:Full:VolumeTag=A00011
3:A3

Now in this case, from what I can tell of mtx-changer script, its correct in
not displaying slot 12, as there isn't a tape in that slot.
Is the drive status being shown correctly though? What format should a
loaded tape drive be displayed as by mtx-changer?

Mtx status looks like I'd expect
mtx -f /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1 status
 Storage Changer /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1:1 Drives, 12 Slots ( 1
Import/Export )
Data Transfer Element 0:Full (Storage Element 3 Loaded):VolumeTag =
A3
 Storage Element 1:Full :VolumeTag=A1
 Storage Element 2:Full :VolumeTag=A2
 Storage Element 3:Empty:VolumeTag=
 Storage Element 4:Full :VolumeTag=A4
 Storage Element 5:Full :VolumeTag=A5
 Storage Element 6:Full :VolumeTag=A6
 Storage Element 7:Full :VolumeTag=A7
 Storage Element 8:Full :VolumeTag=A8
 Storage Element 9:Full :VolumeTag=A9
 Storage Element 10:Full :VolumeTag=A00010

 Storage Element 11:Full :VolumeTag=A00011

 Storage Element 12 IMPORT/EXPORT:Full :VolumeTag=A00012

Now back to the guide commands. I try to unload the tape:
./mtx-changer /dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1 unload
usage: mtx-changer ctl-device com

Thanks for the reply and info on cleaning tapes. I'm using v2.0.3 of Bacula.
I think if I have my Changer Command correct that I'll be alright. Going to
test it out and see what happens.

Thanks,

For me bacula always puts the tape back into the stot it took it from. I
have never tried manuall loading a tape there and seeing what would happen
for an unload.

How do I change tapes and update inventory?

Use the release command in bacula to release any tape from the drive. Then
change the tapes manually on the changer. I recommend doing that by
unloading the magazines. Then after you are done with the manual stuff. type
update slots in a bacula console.

I was considering keeping a cleaning tape in slot 12, will this interfere

This is fine. I have a CLN_ barcode on my cleaning tape and in my
pools I have

Cleaning Prefix = "CLN"

so that bacula recognizes that as a cleaning tape.

Any responses, or wilingness to share some mtx-changer magic is very

Re: [Bacula-users] Need advice on adapting mtx-changer for Exabyte Magnum 224

2007-06-28 Thread Shon Stephens

Hey Ryan,
I used an sgen.conf provided by Tandeberg support. I'm not sure if its
in their Knowledge Base. Here is what I've got

# Exabyte Magnum 224 tape library
#
sgen-diag=3;
#
device-type-config-list="changer";
#
inquiry-config-list="EXABYTE",  "Magnum 224";
#inquiry-config-list=   "EXABYTE",  "*";
#inquiry-config-list=   "EXABYTE";
#
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=0 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=1 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=2 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=3 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=4 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=5 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=6 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=7 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=8 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=9 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=10 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=11 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=12 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=13 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=14 lun=1;
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=15 lun=1;
# end Exabyte Magnum 224

Then I ran "add_drv sgen" and "devfsadm". That created
/dev/scsi/changer/c5t4d1.

Let me know if you get a working mtx-changer script.

Not to distract folks from your question, but I'm looking for a way to
do this for a single tape drive so I can use smartmontools on it... do
you have a pointer for a resource on setting up the sgen.conf file? I've
been looking and not finding much (though I only suspected sgen was
involved until this e-mail).

Re: [Bacula-users] Need advice on adapting mtx-changer for Exabyte Magnum 224

2007-06-28 Thread Shon Stephens

I was able to get the mtx-changer script working correctly. I used the
solaris-mtx-changer from the examples as a starting point. Then to work with
the Magnum 224 and Solaris make a few changes

-added a correct PATH statement for my system
-Solaris doesn't have "seq" command, replaced seq in the wait_for_drive
function with a perl statement
-there are some commands that won't work (unload), unless the tape device is
specified. I set this to a default, but still allow it to be set on command
line too
-changed the awk/sed statements for the list command to be compatible with a
slot that is of type IMPORT/EXPORT

Everything seems cool now. I do have one very important question:

In the statement for the "unload" command, there is the following:
mt -f $device rewoffl

If I am using tapes to perform incremental backups, should I be rewinding
the tape in the drive before unloading it to load another tape. If its
loaded again, will it being rewound previously cause bacula to overwrite
files on the tape? I don't believe so, but hopefully someone can answer that
for sure.

Thanks
Shon

[Bacula-users] To rewind or not to rewind...

2007-07-03 Thread Shon Stephens

that is my question. My mtx-changer script currently contains

mt -f  $device rewoffl

in the "unload" routine. I don't believe that my tapes should be being
rewound, but I'm just not sure. Basically, if the tape is in PoolA and a job
runs that needs a tape from PoolB, it will rewind the tape from PoolA,
unload it, and load the tape from PoolB. The next job could need the tape
from PoolA, if this tape gets loaded, will it being rewound previously cause
Bacula to overwrite data? Or will Bacula seek the tape to find where to
append to?

Also, when I need to change magazines in my autochanger, should I rewind the
tapes first? The next time the tapes go back into the magazine, they will be
overwritten.

Thanks,
Shon

[Bacula-users] Unsure of btape output when testing autochanger

2007-07-10 Thread Shon Stephens

I am not sure of the expected behaviour of btape and am following the User
Guide in configuring, testing my autochanger (Exabyte Magnum 224 LTO-3) with
Bacula. I have already tested the tape device with mt and the changer with
mtx. The mtx-changer script is working as described by the guide. I start
with the tapes loaded in the magazine of the autochanger and no tape in the
drive. If I run the first test

btape -c bacula-sd.conf /dev/rmt/0cbn
Tape block granularity is 1024 bytes.
btape: butil.c:286 Using device: "/dev/rmt/0cbn" for writing.
10-Jul 14:37 btape: 3301 Issuing autochanger "loaded? drive 0" command.
10-Jul 14:37 btape: 3302 Autochanger "loaded? drive 0", result: nothing
loaded.
10-Jul 14:37 btape: Fatal Error at device.c:280 because:
dev open failed: dev.c:425 Unable to open device "Ultrium-TD3"
(/dev/rmt/0cbn): ERR=I/O error
10-Jul 14:37 btape: btape Fatal error: butil.c:195 Cannot open "Ultrium-TD3"
(/dev/rmt/0cbn)

It seems that btape is detecting that no tape is loaded, but doesn't try to
load one. Is this its correct behavior?
I load the tape in Slot 1 into the drive directly with mtx and try again.

btape -c bacula-sd.conf /dev/rmt/0cbn
Tape block granularity is 1024 bytes.
btape: butil.c:286 Using device: "/dev/rmt/0cbn" for writing.
10-Jul 14:51 btape: 3301 Issuing autochanger "loaded? drive 0" command.
10-Jul 14:51 btape: 3302 Autochanger "loaded? drive 0", result is Slot 1.
10-Jul 14:51 btape: 3301 Issuing autochanger "loaded? drive 0" command.
10-Jul 14:51 btape: 3302 Autochanger "loaded? drive 0", result is Slot 1.
btape: btape.c:368 open device "Ultrium-TD3" (/dev/rmt/0cbn): OK

This seems to work, so I run the "test" command in btape

btape: btape.c:1348 Now forward spacing 1 more file.
We should be in file 5. I am at file 5. This is correct!

=== End Forward space files test ===

Ah, I see you have an autochanger configured.
To test the autochanger you must have a blank tape
that I can write on in Slot 1.

Do you wish to continue with the Autochanger test? (y/n):

=== Autochanger test ===

3301 Issuing autochanger "loaded" command.
Slot 1 loaded. I am going to unload it.
3302 Issuing autochanger "unload 1 0" command.
unload status=OK 0
3303 Issuing autochanger "load 1 0" command.
3303 Autochanger "load 1 0" status is OK.
10-Jul 14:55 btape: 3301 Issuing autochanger "loaded? drive 0" command.
10-Jul 14:55 btape: 3302 Autochanger "loaded? drive 0", result is Slot 1.
btape: btape.c:368 open device "Ultrium-TD3" (/dev/rmt/0cbn): OK
btape: btape.c:1235 Rewound "Ultrium-TD3" (/dev/rmt/0cbn)
btape: btape.c:1242 Wrote EOF to "Ultrium-TD3" (/dev/rmt/0cbn)

The test autochanger worked!!

So it seems that btape can issue a load command, and unload properly. So
whats the deal? Should btape has loaded a tape in the first place when it
didn't detect one?

Thanks,
Shon

[Bacula-users] How is a barcode reader supposed to work in Bacula?

2007-07-12 Thread Shon Stephens

I'm a little unsure how its used in Bacula. If its for automatic labeling of

this output is supposed to look. Just for comparison I have the output of
mtx-changer and mtx also. Should I use the barcodes as my Volume names in my

[Bacula-users] Proper use of the Scratch Pool?

2007-07-13 Thread Shon Stephens

I've got a "Scratch" Pool configured

Pool {
 Name = Scratch
 Type = Backup
}

I don't understand how to use it though. Do I need to add Volumes to this
pool before Bacula will use it to provide Volumes to other pools? Will it
automatically name the Volumes from a barcode? When a volume (tape) is
selected from this Pool to be provided to another Pool, is it relabeled? I
really just don't get how this is used...

good idea... I never thought about using "human readable" (more or

Or use the program 'barcode' which should be available for many
flavours of unix.

[Bacula-users] Job Concurrency

2007-07-24 Thread Shon Stephens

I'm trying to understand job concurrency in Bacula and what strategy I
should use for backing up clients.

Its likely that I will have to backup around 50 clients. My strategy is to
write incrementals to disk volumes and fulls to tapes. I assume its possible
for Bacula to write to multiple disk volumes simultaneously if configured to
do so, but what about tapes? I have my tapes divided by customer so that

Customer1 Pool - 8 volumes, 2 in slots each week
Customer2 Pool - 8 volumes, 2 in slots each week

Can Bacula write a job from 2 different clients(file daemons) in Customer1
Pool at the same time? How does this work? I understand that Bacula can't
write a job from Customer1 Pool and Customer2 Pool at the same time because
these are different volumes.

Also can bacula simultaneously spool to disk and write to tape for the same
job?

I'm looking for good advice on how to streamline Bacula so that I'm not
always running backups or have to many jobs waiting on resources in use.

Thanks,
Shon

[Bacula-users] Question about creating a Schedule with Volume Recycling, Windows FD

2007-10-17 Thread Shon Stephens
Hi all,
 I have recently started to move my production backups from ArcServe
BrightStor to Bacula 2.0.3 after completing a testing phase. I am still not
very familiar with Bacula and am trying to move jobs from AS to Bacula. Some
things are easy enough to move from one to the other. However, a lot of the
logic in scheduling can be taken care of by AS, while Bacula wants you to do
some more thinking (probably better and more flexible way of scheduling). I
am having difficulty understanding how to correctly configure this kind of
rotation period with volume recycling.

I have a group of hosts that I wish to backup 7 days a week. Full backup on
Sunday. These backups are done to disk. On Monday of each week, I would like
to copy the previous weeks jobs to tape. I have configured 4 pools. Week1,
Week2, Week3, Week4. I want to overwrite when the volumes from these pools
are presented again (weekly rotation). The disk volumes need to recycled in
the same way. A volume on disk for each Week, and allow it to be overwritten
when that week comes back in the rotation. I'm not necessarily asking for a
config file, just some good advice on how to set this up and the various
config sections I'll need to look at.

I'm also starting to backup Windows systems with Bacula and need some good
advice converting the following from AS to Bacula

Saving the System State

Windows System Options
  ---
  Traverse Directory Junctions and Volume mount points
  Do not Preserve File Hard Links

  Volume Shadow Copy Service Options
  ---
  Files included by a Writer will be excluded from file system backups
  Files excluded by a Writer will be excluded from file system backups

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

[Bacula-users] Need help with Windows FD configuration

2007-10-18 Thread Shon Stephens
I am using Bacula 2.0.3 (though I'm not sure this is the Windows FD
version). I'm trying to backup the Sytem State and configure VSS options,
but haven't deciphered from the manual how to do them.
I'm not very familiar with Windows, but these are clients that must be
backed up by Bacula.

FIrst, I need to backup the "System State". In the manual I see these
instructions to run "ntbackup backup systemstate /F c:\systemstate.bkf"
before backing up with Bacula. My question is can this be executed via the
FD as a command, or does it need to be scheduled on the host? What are the
requirements of running a command or script on a Windows system via the FD?

The other things I'm trying to do are options from ArcServe Brightstor,
where I'm migrating these clients from...

Windows - Traverse Directory junctions, Volume mount points

Windows - No preserve file hard links
VSS - Exclude files included by writer
VSS - Exclude files excluded by writer

I can see that you can set "EnableVSS = yes", but not how to set any
policies, or how to control its behavior. I see a FileSet option called
"hardlinks", but not sure if this applies to NTFS file systems and No idea
how to specify to Traverse Directory junctions and volume mount points.

Any advice, pointers, etc. is very appreciated.

[Bacula-users] Problems building RPM packages

2007-11-02 Thread Shon Stephens
All,
 I am trying to build bacula-2.0.3 rpms for RHEL4. I'm using
2.0.3because that is the version I'm running on my Solaris backup
server
(Blastwave packages are only at 2.0.3)

The only SRPM I was able to find is bacula-2.0.3-10.fc6.src.rpm. When I
attempt to rebuild the srpm for my distribution, I get this error

rpmbuild --rebuild --define "build_rhel4 1"

error: Failed build dependencies:
wxGTK-devel is needed by bacula-2.0.3-10.i386
sqlite-devel is needed by bacula-2.0.3-10.i386
latex2html is needed by bacula-2.0.3-10.i386

These dependencies are not available in RHEL until release 5. I don't want
to build the docs, I don't want to build the server, I just want to build a
bacula-client-2.0.3.rhel4.x86_64.rpm and .i386 rpm. I tried removing the
dependencies from the .spec file. This seems to work ok...except then it
just won't build. Basically its unzips the source in
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/bacula-2.0.3, then creates a directory
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/bacula-2.0.3/bacula-2.0.3/ and copies the source into
it for compilation. The build then fails because it can't locate
"./configure", which does exist and is in the right place. Personally I like
bacula, but this is just ridiculous.

 Can anyone help with either a correct procedure to produce these RPMS
for RHEL3/4, or provide me with bacula-client-2.0.3 rpms for these releases?
And yes, I've already read the readme and tried using the build_rpm.sh
script

Thanks,
Shon

[Bacula-users] Bacula doesn't see tape in drive after label barcodes

2007-11-05 Thread Shon Stephens
I have an autochanger with 12 tapes. I issue the label barcodes command and
it cycles through the tapes in the changer and then does the following:

3307 Issuing autochanger "unload slot 11, drive 0" command.
3304 Issuing autochanger "load slot 12, drive 0" command.
3305 Autochanger "load slot 12, drive 0", status is OK.
3301 Issuing autochanger "loaded? drive 0" command.
3302 Autochanger "loaded? drive 0", result: nothing loaded.
3000 OK label. VolBytes=64512 DVD=0 Volume="A00012" Device="Ultrium-TD3"
(/dev/rmt/0cbn)
Catalog record for Volume "A00012", Slot 12 successfully created.

*release
The defined Storage resources are:
 1: Mentora_Files
 2: Exabyte_224
Select Storage resource (1-2): 2
3301 Issuing autochanger "loaded? drive 0" command.
3302 Autochanger "loaded? drive 0", result: nothing loaded.
3921 Device "Ultrium-TD3" (/dev/rmt/0cbn) already released.

This is where Bacula then "loses" the 12th tape. I can't get Bacula to even
recognize that its in the drive and needs to be unloaded. Does anyone know
what the issue might be?

[Bacula-users] Bacula speed limitations?

2007-11-06 Thread Shon Stephens
I was just wondering what the factors limiting the speed with which
Bacula writes to tape are? I performed some testing on my LTO-3 drive
and found that the theoretical limit is 276G/hr, while my backups are
writing at around 174G/hr. The client is the Bacula system itself. The
FD is reading files from a filesystem that resides on a SATAbeast FCA
attached storage array. The files are Oracle dumps, and the options I
have specified are:

signature = MD5
verify = pins5
sparse = yes
noatime = yes

The only compression I am using is the tape devices compression, which
at 2:1 compression should be over 500G/hr. I wrote a 3.4T job in
19h30m. At what seems to be a compression of 1.5:1. This should still
be faster than the 174G/hr its acheiving.

Would using MD5 signatures slow this up?
Are any of these settings tunable and do they affect Bacula performance?

mt-back4.director Version: 2.0.3 (06 March 2007) i386-pc-solaris2.8 solaris 5.8
Daemon started 05-Nov-07 07:07, 5 Jobs run since started.

Ryan,

 I'm not sure what you mean, or how to test for this. What gets
written to the catalog, when does it get written, and how does that
affect the rest of the job?

Thanks,

[Bacula-users] Prevent Bacula from writing files to Catalog DB?

2007-11-08 Thread Shon Stephens
I remember reading somewhere that its possible to configure a Job so
that the files and attributes are not added to the Catalog DB.
However, I can't find this documentation now.

Basically, I have a client with millions of files, and don't want all
that going into the database. My understanding is that if a backup is
done without saving this information to the Catalog, that it can only
be restored in a very specific way, and I won't be able to extract
files by name.

Can anyone clue me in re: this type of backup?

Thanks,
Shon

[Bacula-users] One tape drive , many devices?

2007-11-09 Thread Shon Stephens
All,
 I have an autochanger that is currently configured and working.

Autochanger {
  Name = Magnum_224
  Device = Ultrium-TD3
  Changer Command = "/opt/csw/etc/bacula/mtx-changer %c %o %S %a %d"
  Changer Device = /dev/scsi/changer/c6t4d1
}

Device {
  Name = Ultrium-TD3
  Media Type = LTO-3
  Archive Device = /dev/rmt/0cbn
  LabelMedia = Yes
  AutomaticMount = Yes
  AlwaysOpen = Yes
  RemovableMedia = Yes
  RandomAccess = No
  AutoChanger = yes
  Spool Directory = /tmp
  Maximum Spool Size = 4831838208
  # Enable the Alert command only if you have the mtx package loaded
  Alert Command = "sh -c '/opt/csw/sbin/tapeinfo -f %c |grep TapeAlert|cat'"
}

I'd like to know, is it possible to setup multiple definitions for the
same device. I'd like to be able to use hardware compression for some
jobs (/dev/rmt/0cbn) and software-only (/dev/rmt/0bn) for others.

Just wondering is anyone is doing this in their setup.

Thanks,
Shon

Re: [Bacula-users] Question about compressed backups

I'm a little concerned because of the fact that trying to compress an
already compressed file can take longer or even create a larger sized
file.

[Bacula-users] Strange error parsing config

2007-11-14 Thread Shon Stephens
All,
 I'm running Bacula 2.0.3 on Solaris 10. I have had Bacula running
recently in testing, and am now trying to move to production. However,
when starting the Director, I get this error:

14-Nov 03:43 bacula-dir: ERROR TERMINATION at parse_conf.c:482
Config error: Could not find config Resource Sun_1300_Full referenced
on line 47 :Schedule = "Sun_1300_Full"

: line 47, col 29 of file /opt/csw/etc/bacula/bacula-dir_jobs.conf
   Schedule = "Sun_1300_Full"

However, this resource is correctly defined in my config files:

"bacula-dir_schedules.conf"
Schedule {
   Name = "Sun_1300_Full"
   Run = Level=Full Sun at 13:00
}

"bacula-dir_jobs.conf"
Job {
   Name = "Customer_Oracle_Weekly_Tape"
   Type = Backup
   Client = db1.ora
   FileSet = "Customer_Oracle"
   Schedule = "Sun_1300_Full"
   Storage = Exabyte_224
   Pool = Shopbop_Tapes
   Messages = Standard
   Write Bootstrap = "/opt/csw/var/bacula/bootstrap/%n.bsr"
   Spool Data = yes
}

Any ideas. This only now stopped working for me.

[Bacula-users] How to re-run job after Bacula dies?

2007-11-19 Thread Shon Stephens
All,
 I had a job running (despooling) from disk to tape. During this
time I was making changes to bacula-dir.conf and I did a "reload" in
bconsole. My changes weren't kosher and bacula died. The job already
had filled 1 tape, and was despooling to another. When I started
Bacula, the job wasn't running any longer, didn't appear to have
completed and the spool file is also gone.

What do I do?

Also, is there a tool, utility, or bacula-dir command option to verify
config file syntax before reloading the director?

Thanks,
Shon

[Bacula-users] Problem with ClientRunBeforeJob command on Win32

 I am having a hard time correctly configuring a job to run before

tell me how to correct this quickly. Here is the error

And here's the config

Job {
  Name = "Mt-Back3_Daily_Disk"
  Type = Backup  Client = mt-back3.mentora
  FileSet = "Mt-Back3_System"
  Schedule = "Incr_2000_Sun_Full"
  Storage = Mentora_Files
  Pool = Mentora_Disks
  Messages = Standard
  Write Bootstrap = "/opt/csw/var/bacula/bootstrap/%n.bsr"
  ClientRunBeforeJob = "C:/Program Files/Bacula/systemstate.bat"
}

I can also see that it doesn't like my attempt at Auto Labeling the
volume. Here is my config for that.

Pool {
  Name = Mentora_Disks  Pool
  Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 27d
  Volume Use Duration = 7d
  LabelFormat = "{$Pool}"
}

Re: [Bacula-users] No database entries for backuped files

2007-11-20 Thread Shon Stephens
I am running Bacula 2.2.5 on Solaris 10_x86. My database is MySQL4. I
just upgraded to 2.2.5 a few days ago from Blastwave packages. My
messages indicated a successful backup of my client. A query of :

 5: List all backups for a Client
 7: List Volumes used by selected JobId
10: List total files/bytes by Job
11: List total files/bytes by Volume
12: List Files for a selected JobId
13: List Jobs stored on a selected MediaId
14: List Jobs stored for a given Volume name

Given the correct JobId, Client, Volume, or MediaId shows no results.
The only table that seems to have related information is Filename,
which does have the names of the files I specified in the job.

[Bacula-users] All the problems with Bacula

2007-11-21 Thread Shon Stephens
Ok. This is a rant and you can remove it from the list if you want to
later. I just have to vent.

Bacula is incredibly complex to setup. Its taken 4 months and its
still not working correctly.

Things that should be easy that Bacula makes overly complex:

Labeling tapes
Assigning tapes to pools
Reassigning tapes to pools
Managing disk media

Things Bacula can't seem to get right:

Detecting a tape is in the drive and using it
Even though the correctly labeled tape is in the drive, and has the
right Volume label, and is marked "Append", and is from the correct
Pool
Bacula is still waiting for a mount request. Every external program
recognizes that the tape is in the drive and mounted. Not Bacula

Catalog entries. I've not had a single backup job where the right
entries made it into the Catalog

Windows hosts. Good luck figuring out the esoteric path syntax because
its different in different chapters of the manual and also different
depending on which part of the config you are editing

Basically I can't see that its useable for anything more than backing
up a single system, and even then better be careful.

I'm going with Arkeia Network Backup. Might cost money, but at least
it will work as advertised which is more than can be said for Crapula

Re: [Bacula-users] All the problems with Bacula

2007-11-21 Thread Shon Stephens
Like I said its a rant. Probably a poor choice to post, but I've
really been having some inexplicable problems lately and kirk'd out
something bad this morning. Setting up Bacula to test certain things
went relatively smoothly. Its been setting it up for production that
has presented its biggest challenges. The documentation is immense and
the learning curve is certainly challenging. If it weren't for the
support of all the kind folks here, I wouldn't have come as far as I
have. For instance, the full abilities of the commands aren't well
documented. It required searching the bacula-users posts to discover
that I could do "label slots=1-12 pool=scratch barcodes".

I did do something foolish the other day when I edited the jobs and
ran reload in the console while a job was despooling. The conf wasn't
correct (still trying to get the Windows Fileset syntax correct). Well
of course the director puked and this is I suppose expected. What I
didn't expect is that Bacula wouldn't be able to tell me what happened
to the job, or that the data that had been spooled to disk would all
be gone. This is when I started running into difficulty attempting to
purge the tape and add it back to the scratch pool. In addition, I had
a Full backup run on Sunday. I received email that the job was
complete and was successful. Querying Bacula for any information
regarding the job returned "no reuslts". Looking directly at the
tables showed the Filename table did contain the filenames but the Job
and File tables were empty. I don't believe this should have been the
case, and there was nothing in mysql logs to indicate an error and
none in Bacula logs. I am not unwilling to believe that there still
could have been an issue with mysql. These are real concerns for me
and trying to implement reliable backups.

I do apologize to anyone I might have insulted, particularly the hard
working Bacula developers. Poor choice of mine to post comments like
that.

Poor choice of mine to post comments like
that.

[Bacula-users] Staying the course....

2007-11-21 Thread Shon Stephens
I blew up and sent an inappropriate email to the list. I apologize to
the developers, community at large, and particularly those that have
been so helpful. I chose Bacula initially because of its flexibility
and features and have let the pressure of getting this project
completed get the better of me. I feel I'm close to a working solution
and became vexed over some issues that I thought should have been
simple to overcome.

Sincerely,
Shon

Re: [Bacula-users] Staying the course....

2007-11-21 Thread Shon Stephens
John,
 I appreciate your offer for continued assistance and no doubt
will need to make use of it. I hope I haven't burned too many bridges.
I'm going to take a break and let this sit for the weekend. I'll take
the earlier suggestion to read the entire manual. I've been picking it
apart, but not ever read it like a book, so perhaps I've missed some
philosophical points that are very relevant.

[Bacula-users] Forward Progress

2007-11-29 Thread Shon Stephens
After a holiday hiatus and some soul-searching (aka curling up w/ the Bacula
manual) I was able to make some significant progress

 I couldn't figure out what caused the initial missing catalog data.
Since I had recently upgraded and wasn't capturing good backups, I dropped
my tables and recreated them.
This seemed to do the trick and the UNIX backups were off and running smooth
and catalog data seems correct as well.

 I took some advice and put my systemstate.bat file in a path with no
spaces. So c:\bacula works, but not c:\program files\bacula. I was
attempting to keep everything under one directory, but I couldn't get the
ClientRunBeforeJob script to run in a path with spaces and the bacula-fd for
Windows couldn't seem to correclty locate its config files if I installed it
anywhere but the default location. Good news is that this is now working and
my Windows host backups are writing to disk.

 I can't say that working with tapes has gotten any easier, but after
enough trial and mostly error I have figured out how to reassign tapes to a
pool and change their status, etc.. When I load tapes into the autochanger
and issue "label slots=1-12 pool=Scratch barcodes" it does the business.
However Bacula can't keep track of the status of last tape it labels. Says
its not in the changer and says its not loaded in the drive. When I issue
"release" in bconsole, it tells me nothing is mounted and there is nothing
to release. Running "update slots" shows that the tape hasn't been returned
to its changer slot either. So I drop out of bconsole and use mtx directly
to unload and but the tape back in its slot. Not that big a pain, and its
now part of the procedure. Another weird issue with the changer is that when
swapping tapes to a new series I first have to run an "mtx status" command
before Bacula can see all my slots. Before that it only sees 11, not the
full 12. Again, its now part of the procedure.

So over the holiday over 20 different backups ran successfully and
relatively quickly. I'm still a little fuzzy on how data spooling helps
speed up jobs or helps run concurrent jobs. I have one job that takes 12
hours and it seems to spend 7 of that despooling. I have to read this part
of the manual again for better comprehension.

Thanks for everyone's understanding and continued advice. I think it really
helped me overcome an initial hump. I still have some things I'm figuring
out and need to run some test restores and verify. Does anyone run an
automated verify after their backups?

[Bacula-users] Seeking advice on recycling disk volumes and migration jobs

2007-11-29 Thread Shon Stephens
All,
 I have setup a pool of disk volumes

Pool {
  Name = NAS1_Disks
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 27d
  Volume Use Duration = 7d
  LabelFormat = "${Pool}-${NumVols}"
}

The first backup written to this pool occurred on a Wednesday, and so the
next volume, was as expected created and used on the following Wednesday. I
now know the "Volume Use Duration" works as I'd expected. I'd like to know
if on day 28, the first volume will become recycled and available for use
again in the same pool? If I want the first volume to be reused, do I need
to add a "Maximum Volumes" directive to the pool (I'd like 4 volumes total),
or will Bacula see that there is a volume available and not create a new
one?

Also, since the first volume was created on a Wed, but ideally I'd like to
have the new volume creation and the old volume recycling occur on Monday
instead in order to fit to my migration strategy. How might I accomplish
this? I was thinking I'd have to do an update of the volume information and
calculate what the retention period would be to offset to Monday, but then
I'd have to reset that after the first reuse. Its confusing to me slightly.

My Migration strategy is to simply Migrate the enitre volume to tape at the
end of the week based on the volume name. I'm not sure if this is the best
strategy or if it might be better to do it by jobs. I think that could get
messy when I have 50 jobs though. Any suggestions?

Thank you again,
Shon

[Bacula-users] Experiences compiling bat on Solaris 10 x86

2007-11-29 Thread Shon Stephens
Busy day. I really like the screenshots of bat on the wiki and though I'm
more a cli person, its a requirement of the project to have some kind of gui
for at least reporting. I'd like to give bat a try and wanted to find out if
anyone had recently compiled it for Solaris 10 x86 and particularly those
who are using the Blastwave packages and bat.

Thanks,
Shon

[Bacula-users] Instructions for compiling bat on Solars 10 x86

2007-12-03 Thread Shon Stephens
I use Bacula 2.2.5 installed from Blastwave packages. The packages do not
come with bat because the Qt4 dependency is not yet a Blastwave package.
This is how I installed the pre-requisites, compiled Qt4, qtw, and bat.

First, I setup Blastwave and installed Bacula. Those instructions were
provided by someone else and can be found in the list archives.
I then installed many Solaris Freeware packages (SFW) available from the Sun
download site.

SFWaalib
SFWaconf
SFWamake
SFWasclk
SFWbdb
SFWcoreu
SFWcurl
SFWdb1
SFWdiffu
SFWfile
SFWfnlib
SFWgawk
SFWgcal
SFWgcmn
SFWgd
SFWgdb
SFWgfind
SFWimlib
SFWlibsane
SFWlpcap
SFWltool
SFWlynx
SFWmpeg
SFWncur
SFWnmap
SFWnpbm
SFWoggl
SFWpcre
SFWrline
SFWrsync
SFWscrn
SFWsed
SFWsgrep
SFWshar
SFWslang
SFWtclx
SFWtdmp
SFWter
SFWtetex
SFWtop
SFWungif
SFWvim
SFWvnc
SFWxaw3d
SFWxterm

I used the gcc from Blastwave, so if it wasn't installed as a dependency
when you installed pkg-get and Bacula, install it now with "pkg-get -i
gcc3".
I then made sure to have $PATH and $LD_LIBRARY_PATH set correctly. This
should include both the Solaris lib locations as well as SFW and
CSW(Blastwave)

echo $PATH
/opt/sfw/bin:/opt/sfw/sbin:/opt/csw/bin:/opt/csw/sbin:/opt/csw/gcc3/bin:/opt/csw/mysql4/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/dt/bin:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin

echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib:/usr/sfw/lib:/opt/sfw/lib:/opt/csw/lib

Once these things were done I downloaded the bacula-2.2.5 src, the dep-pkgs
src, and the qt4 src. I first compiled qt4 with the default options to
configure and installing it in /usr/local. This is very straight forward.

Next I compiled qwt from the dep-pkgs. Basically just go into the
qwt-5.0.2directory, edit the
qwtconfig.pri for your options, and run qmake. Then run make and make
install. Again, straight forward.

Finally its time to compile bat. Bat does not compile on its own, and must
be done during the compilation of bacula itself. Use configure with all the
options for a regular compilation of Bacula with the addition of the
following flags

"--enable-bat"  and "--with-qwt=path_to_qwt"

In order to get configure to recognize where qwt is installed the Qt*.pc
files located in path_to_qt4/lib/pkgconfig must be copied to
/usr/lib/pkgconfig.
Also when you configure Bacula, specify an alternate installation path than
the one that Blastwave Bacula is installed to. I was using $HOME as the
base.

Now just run make. Bat will compile and be in the bacula-2.2.5/qt-console
directory. I copied bat to /opt/csw/sbin and bat.conf to /opt/csw/etc/bacula
(where Blastwave's files are located)

This is not a very detailed set of instructions, but does cover the hurdles
that I encountered when getting this to work correctly. I hope you find it
useful

I can see that at first, bacula appears to have lost its connection to the
MySQL server. I have been investigating this. What I'm not positive about is
the "duplicate entry" error and whether or not the rest of these errors are
the result of the "lost connection" with MySQL.

Any advice is much appreciated,
