2023-11-03 Thread Yateen Shaligram Bhagat (Nokia)
Hi all,

I am planning to install baculum 11.x on Ubuntu 22.04.
Which of the deb packages from the download link below can be used for the same
?

https://bacula.org/downloads/baculum/stable-11/debian/pool/main/b/baculum/

Or, or Ubuntu I need to comile from the source code?

Thanks

My catalog handles 81M files on very ancient hardware and it is far below any

  3. Last but not the least, there is hardly a need to precisely locate a
single file during restoration. The restore is always in bulk at top dir level.

With Catalog Files = No (in pool resource def) , we have already seen a big
performance enhancement on the DB server.
Bu there is a flip side, Virtual Full backup can no longer be achieved.

Hi all,

I found an answer to this issue, Ana Emília M. Arruda had already replied to
this question back in Jan 2023, I had missed that email earlier.

The trick is to have "Catalog Files = No" in client config file.

However I notice that with this setting, the Virtual Full backup can not
happen, due to file records missing.

[Bacula-users] Delete files from catalog & volume

2023-06-26 Thread Yateen Shaligram Bhagat (Nokia)
Hi all,

We are using Bacula 9.4.4. with disk based backup.

We have some old archive backups with huge disk consumption.

Now that we are facing disk space issue, we started analyzing the disk space
consumed by the volumes of the archive backups and realized that some unwanted
files (such as core dump) were also backed up inadvertently.

The situation is corrected for the current year's backups by putting exclude
rules in the fileset. But we need to free up disk space now from old archives.

So my question is:
Is it possible to remove files from old backup jobs by way of
pruning the file records from Catalog and deleting the files from the
corresponding volumes.

Thanks,

Keep in mind that a reload will not affect already-running jobs, and
*some* changes may not take effect in already *scheduled* jobs.

Based on personal experience, after reloading I also recommend restarting the
Director when opportunity presents itself. (i.e when there are no running
jobs). I have found in the past that after multiple reloads, stability
deteriorates. It SHOULDN'T, in theory, but nevertheless sometimes it does.

Hello Yateen,

I think you just need to add `MaximumConcurrentJobs = x` to your restore job
called `RestoreFiles`

Set `x` to any number higher than 1, like 10, 20, whatever, and you should be
OK to do multiple concurrent restore jobs.

Hope this helps,

Yateen,

Again, you only need *one* Restore Job defined, even if you are going to run
1,000 restores at the same time.

Show us the problem you are experiencing so we can direct you to the right
solution.

I am guessing you are more than likely running into some
"MaximumConcurrentJobs" bottleneck somewhere.

I mean, show us a Director that is running (or trying to run) multiple restore
jobs at the same time:

* status dir

There is a reason why we ned to run multiple restore jobs concurrently.

We are migrating our computing env (few hundred hosts) to a different flavour

Prior to migration we need to do data backup and then restore it back.

If we go sequentially using one single RestoreFiles job, it is going to be a
lengthy exercise.

Anyway I will try defining and running multiple restore jobs.

Hello Yateen,

The Restore job (Type = Restore) provided is an example/template of a Restore
job.

You only need one, but you can have as many as you want/need.

The only time I ever create more than one is when I have one for Linux restores
and one for Windows restores where I typically only change the `where =`
setting.

For example, for Windows restores, I might set:

where = "C:/temp"

and for Linux, I might have

where = /tmp

This just saves a small amount of typing when doing a restore.

If you need to run multiple concurrent restore jobs, you *may* need to set
`MaximumConcurrentJobs = x` where x is something greater than 1. I am not 100%
sure about this, it has been a while since I touched the Restore job template I
use here, and mine currently has `MaximumConcurrentJobs = 10` so I have a
suspicion this is correct. :)

Also, you will never actually "Run" Jobs of `Type = restore`... You just type
`restore` and if you have more than one job of Type = restore, you will be
prompted for the one you want to use. You can also specify it on the command
line and you will not be promted:

* restore restorejob=LinuxRestore_job

Hope this helps,

Hello Yateen,

There is no default pasword for the OS's `bacula` user. As a matter of fact
most package maintainers for the Bacula packages on different Linux
Distributions set no password, lock the account, and set the shell to
`/usr/bin/nologin`

As the root user on the system to need to set a password, unlock the account
and change the shell to a valid shell like `/bin/bash`

If you are trying to run som binary or script as the bacula users, you can also
just use sudo:

# sudo -u bacula /path/to/script_or_binary

Hello Yateen,

You should use the "postgres" user to run the update_postgresql_tables script.
[Yateen] Ok, noted

As you have installed Bacula 13 from scratch in the new server, please remember
to drop the bacula database created in a fresh install before importing the
current DB using dump.

Then, you run the update_postgresql_tables script.

[Yateen]

  1. I dropped the bacula database and tried to import the dump of Bacula
9.4.4 Catalog. Got an error:

ALTER DATABASE
Creation of bacula database succeeded.
Database encoding OK

  1. Then I imported Catalog dump from Bacula 9.4
psql -d bacula -f ~bacula/bacula.sql

  1. Next, I ran update_postgresql_tables script
postgres@ubuntu:/opt/bacula/scripts$ ./update_postgresql_tables
This script will update a Bacula PostgreSQL database

from version 12-16 or 1014-1022 to 1024.
Are you using packages or compiling from source code?

Best,
Ana

Please advise.

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula upgrade

2023-01-30 Thread Yateen Shaligram Bhagat (Nokia)
Hello Ana,

Thanks for your reply.

Here is what I did...

1. Target for Bacula 13 upgrade is Ubuntu 22.4.
1. Installed postgresql 14 on Ubuntu 22.4
2. Installed Bacula 13 using Deb package (dpkg command)
3. Dumped Bacula database from 9.4 installation (on CentOS 6)
4. Imported Bacula db dump into postgresql 14 on Ubuntu
5. Tried to start Bacula 13 director.
6. Got error message : Current Catalog version is 16, required version 1024.

Plz let me know the username through which i should run the
upadate_postgresql_tables script, is it postgres user?

Regards,

Yateen

Have you already performed the upgrade? Have you checked if the Catalog version
has been updated?

[Bacula-users] volume relabel

2023-01-18 Thread Yateen Shaligram Bhagat (Nokia)
Hi all,

We are using disk based Bacula backup up. (9.4.4)

We want to archive older backups into a separate archive pool (with a long
retention time) with no associated job record in the catalog.
We are doing it by migrating current backup job to an archive pool, then do a
job purging from the archive volume.

Further we need to relabel the new archive volume with a specific name like
archive_2022.
We tried it using the relabel command. (relabel oldvolume=xxx volume=yyy )

Observations:

1.  In the catalog, it renames the old volume name to a new volume name ;
this is expected.

2. However, on the storage side, the old disk volume got truncated to 254
bytes, all the contents were lost .

Expectation was that on the storage side also the old volume will get renamed
to a new volume with no loss of data.

Any comments?

Thanks

[Bacula-users] Backup without files records

2023-01-07 Thread Yateen Shaligram Bhagat (Nokia)
Hi All,

I am curious to know if a backup job can be run without file records being
cataloged in the backend database.

I know about AutoPrune mechanism for files, but that happens after the backup
job is over for file records older than the retention time.
But we don't want the file records to get cataloged at all.

Thanks

Thanks Radoslaw.

I was thinking of doing it using SQL , but did not know that even bconsole can
have embedded SQL

Not sure why you would really need/want to do this, but this will work using
bconsole:
8<
# echo -e "sql\nUPDATE job SET name='RenamedJobName' WHERE
jobid='xxx';\n\nquit\n" | bconsole
8<

It rename a job in catalog only. This does not rename the job in the volume.
I know no procedure with existing tools you can use to rename a job in the
volume.

[Bacula-users] Renaming a job

2022-12-29 Thread Yateen Shaligram Bhagat (Nokia)
Hi all,

We have a requirement for renaming a job after its migration.

Our strategy is to migrate the last full job of the year from a regular pool
into an archive pool using the Migrate job.
(tried this, it works fine)
However we need that once the job is migrated, rename it to say
_archive_.

Is this possible (in bacula V 9.4.4)

[Bacula-users] Separation of bacula-dir and Catalog service

2022-11-21 Thread Yateen Shaligram Bhagat (Nokia)
Hi all,

We are using Bacula 9.4 on Centos.

At the moment the bacula-dir and the catalog service (PgSQL server) are
co-located on one single host.

For optimization reasons, we need to move the PgSQL server to another server
(FreeBSD based).

Is that possible?

Thanks,

Hello,

Actually, I have the same question.

Is there any documentation about supported versions ?

Also, why not building recent platform packages for 11.0.x ?

Best regards

Also, how much longer will 13.0 be supported before a major upgrade is
required?
