See you BBDB snots, Harald feels the same way.

 H == Harald Hanche-Olsen han...@math.ntnu.no writes:
H This is a particular risk that has been bothering me for a long time.
H Not BBDB especially, but just about every GUI has this tendency to pop
H up some sort of dialogue on its own from time to time, asking this
H question or that. And if you're busy typing, clicking the mouse or
H tapping the phone screen at the moment, you can very easily hit a GUI
H element you didn't mean to.

H For example, I have more than once inadvertently rejected an incoming
H call on my cell phone because I was looking through the menus at the
H time: On my old (Nokia) phone, the same button that is used to exit
H the current menu selection is used to reject an incoming call.

H And just two days ago I accidentally called a phone number I didn't
H mean to, because I was just finishing a call and wanted to hang up.
H But the other party hung up first, so the button for hanging up had
H disappeared, revealing the recent calls list underneath, by the time
H my finger hit the screen.

H This sort of problem is so widespread, and seems to attract so little
H attention, that I have been wondering if I am the only person in the
H whole world who notices and is bothered by it? Surely, there must be
H ways to design a user interface to minimize this sort of user
H interface race condition. (I have never seen the term race condition
H used in this context, but I believe it is appropriate.)

bbdb-insert-new-field should tell user about duplicate field before prompting

2011-02-01 Thread jidanni
C-o runs the command bbdb-insert-new-field, which is an interactive

OK, I use it to make a new notes field, and it prompts me for its

Then only afterward does it figure out:

bbdb-insert-new-field: there already are notes!

It should figure that out before prompting me.

spacebar land mines

2007-12-15 Thread jidanni
I have discovered the biggest problem with BBDB.

One is browsing their mail when all the sudden the spacebar doesn't
seem to work. One hits it several times but the message doesn't seem
to scroll.

One looks down to the minibuffer to find that one has apparently
already given a answer via the spacebar to

  Change name Dreamhost Support to DreamHost Customer Support
  Team? (y or n)

(Well isn't that interesting. Someone has slipped a land mine under
the spacebar, knowing I will tread on it.)

And is now stuck at

  Keep name Dreamhost Support as an AKA? (y or n)

Well, all I can say is: don't take spacebar for an answer ever,
require a real y/n. And offer another choice z: edit a name to
become the name for them, no matter how many they come up with in the
future. Empty OK too.

bbdb-version 2.35 on Debian Sid.

Re: spacebar land mines

2007-12-15 Thread jidanni
R This is not BBDB specific in any way, see...
R | y-or-n-p is a built-in function in `C source code'.

Actually at that point it is using bbdb-y-or-n-p, which acted
differently for the second question too. Anyways, it is stuffing the
ballot box because the user will just be hitting the spacebar over and
over reading his mails, with eyes nowhere near the minibuffer to
realize he just signed on the dotted line...

mention how to merge two .bbdb files

2007-08-12 Thread jidanni
Mention in the Info file the best way to merge two (perhaps just
slightly different) .bbdb files.

Worked for me:
$ diff ~/.bbdb other/.bbdb #see how they differ
$ sort -u ~/.bbdb other/.bbdb  /tmp/.bbdb
$ emacs /tmp/.bbdb #removing unwanted items by hand
$ mv /tmp/.bbdb ~

Idea: bbdb-clone-record

2005-01-26 Thread jidanni
Idea: add a command to duplicate a record, bbdb-clone-record, or
whatever, handy say if we want to add someone to the database whose
details are almost the same as somebody else already in the
database. So we just clone the record and then make minor changes to
the new copy.
