I agree. Also, the factory clippings should be versioned, so one can
see if he has the last version.

To the devs: if the factory clippings are undated, well, they should
really be versioned some way.

me2.

I have one window with lots of docs in it.. and another with only one
file open in it.. and a couple times when I hit the command to
compare 2 front docs.. then it compared one of those docs that was a
front doc with another that was not (I can't remember if the 2 being
compared were the solo file and one from the other window that was NOT
having focus, or if it was comparing 2 docs from the multi-occupied
window and ignoring the solo file.. but I suspect it was the former
case). Anyway since it was not consistent I did not pay much
attention and have had predictable and productive days since... so I
would not have even thought of it, but that you mention..

BBEdit users are the most likely kind of users to read Release
Notes too. And the change and details about upgrading the new
clippings were clearly spelled out.

For me, I would *MUCH* prefer the developers working on
productivity enhancements in BBEdit rather than writing complex
upgrade scripts which will never work 100% anyway.

And why not use the powerful find diffs on folders to do the
update of your clipping sets. That's how I updated mine and
there is NO way that BBEdit could have scripted that process and
got it right.

Computers being computers, they'd be very useful at a task such as
updating. ;-)

For example, the update software could not just enquire as to whether
or not changes were made in one of the Clippings sub-folders and then
come to a full stop if any are found. Rather it could drill down to
the file level and update the sub-folders on a file by file basis,
adding any new folders as required. It might even pop up a useful
comment to the affect that it found a file which it would love to
update but I had modified it and what would I like to do.

BBEdit users are the most likely kind of users to modify things like
the Clippings folder. I would guess that the majority of users did not
get the current Clippings folder because their old one contained
modified files. The installer should at least make an effort to notify
them of that during the update.

2009-12-03 Thread RobS
Thanks to Stoney Ballard's hint I too downloaded the new Clippings set
from barebones.com and am now getting the correct results. This is
going to be very handy.

The barebones site says, "These are the factory default clippings
supplied with BBEdit 9. BBEdit will automatically update your
installed clippings when possible, but certain changes to your
existing clippings will cause BBEdit to skip them. So, to get the
latest and greatest, download these and install (or merge) them into
your existing Clippings folder."

Q1 - what conditions will cause the update to fail to install the new
Clippings folder?

Q2 - is it safe to throw out similar named folders from the old
Clippings folder? For example, can I now throw out HTML Glossary.html
(assuming I've copied over anything I added to it) now that I have
HTML.html? Similarly with WML Glossary.html? And how about when the
folders are duplicated in name, such as PHP.php - should I just drag
and drop and say yes when asked if I want to overwrite?

BBedit 9.3

Command-d brings up the Open File By Name dialog.

"Complete" is set to F5 in Prefs. When I do that I get "No completions

I rarely make changes to the commandkey equivalents, so I suspect the
results I mention above are the defaults.

Seems like the upgrade should have installed these clippings.

What version of BBEdit are you using? The instructions above should
work in BBEdit 9.x (and I *think* 8.x, too).

Are you sure you set your "text completion" trigger to "after a delay
in typing"? I have mine set to come up after a delay in typing, so I
type p_class, wait about a half-second for the popup, and then just
hit enter (or tab).

My completion trigger is command-d, so if I switch that setting from
"delay" to "manually", I'd just hit command-d instead of waiting for
the popup. If you don't like command-d, you can change your completion
trigger to whatever you want under Preferences->Menus. Twiddle out
'Edit', scroll down to 'Complete', and use the 'Set Key' button on the
right to change the trigger.

Also, the clippings are language sensitive, so you have to make sure
you're in an HTML document for this to work.

Hope this helps.

When I try that I get the top-most two documents in one window being
compared, not the top one from each window. Since I've never worked
with more than one window (at least, not since BBE allowed multiple
docs in one window) I can't comment on what should be the expected or

Compare Two Front Documents bringing up wrong documents

2009-12-03 Thread Mark Fitzgerald
Hi. Since upgrading to 9.3.1, I've found the Compare Two Front
Documents feature behaving erratically (to me, anyway).

If I have two text windows open, with multiple documents in each, and
I choose Compare Two Front Documents, I no longer get the frontmost
document in each of the two windows. In fact, I can't figure out why I
get a comparison of the two documents I get. It seems random, and
frequently it includes an additional copy of one of the already-open
documents, in a new window.

If this change is intentional, I don't understand it, and the
documentation is no help in explaining it. Is there a way of setting a
preference or something to get to work to the way it did in 9.2?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
