It’s all written in bootstrap, so it should be mostly fine, if not ideal. The
site doesn’t have enough traffic for analytics to be interesting, and I do not
have any access to past logs anyway.

For anything I am doing myself, I really only care about iPhone (6/Plus size)
and iPad. It it looks good on those, it will look good enough on the desktop.
The people I know that still have iPhone 4 or 5 sized phones do not use them
much for web-browsing and have bought old phones to save a little bit of money
(or in some cases, not, one person bought a used 4S for $120 and could have
bought a 5C for $100).

enough daft buggers would take it as a warning and keep away. (Lords and

Re: Preview phone/ipad size?

2018-06-17 Thread Fletcher Sandbeck
It is good to run an Analytics or comparable report to see what screen sizes
your users have. I'm still seeing iPhone 5 class screens running about 8% of
our audience which is enough that we still want to support them. Which isn't to
say your audience is going to the be the same, but it's good to check.

I really like https://caniuse.com/ <https://caniuse.com/> as well. It can pull
from your Analytics and give you a site-specific read on how much audience can
or can't take advantage of various HTML features. There are features that I
don't feel I can use because they have so little support and others that I find
have 99% support among our audience so there isn't really any need to worry
about using them.

Yes, that works, but it’s more steps that should be needed.

Solisapp would be great if this was something I did all the time. For a
one-off, $30 is too much.

Still trying to figure out how BrowserStack actually works.

For now, I am keeping an iPhone 7 and an iPad next to the desk and ignoring

Don't let the IP address change. My main machine's IP address has been
10.0.0.13 on the LAN for a decade. When I bought a router that would only allow
192.168.0.0 style addresses I returned it.

Are you using MAMP? [www.mamp.info] [free version available]

MAMP will let you view your files through apache/php on a local web
server, and you can connect to that wirelessly over a local wifi
network very easily and preview your files on an iPhone/iPad. One
gotcha I found is to make sure you configure server names correctly
(especially if using WordPress).

I can visit my site on my MacPro at 3 addresses:

http://localhost:/iso200/wordpress/
http://192.168.0.11:/iso200/wordpress/
and at
http://monkey.local:/iso200/wordpress/

however http://monkey.local:/iso200/wordpress/ is the only one
that can be consistently seen across the network by all devices -
hardwiring the IP address causes all sorts of problems when/if it
changes (especially in WordPress).

Try xScope. http://xscopeapp.com/

You could use the Screens option to set up a Safari window to the size it would
have on the iPad, and use the mirror function to display that window on your
iPad. Then you just have to preview to that window from BBEdit to see the
result on the iPad. You can also tap and hold the mirrored window on the iPad
to display the controls, and tap the lock to keep the Safari window displayed
even when you take BBEdit to the front.

Yes it's a very handy app, but it doesn't really address the original
poster's question, since there's no real way to do a preview of your
BBEdit file in Reflection.

I have the same question as the op. don't know of a way, but would like to.

Check out an app called Reflection from

It displays your iPad or iPhone on your Mac's screen. Very handy.

BBedit is the only text editor I have ever used on the Mac, but for
quick edits on the road I use FTPonTheGo on my iPod-Touch. Small yes.
One document at a time - of course. But it's quick and easy to use.
BBedit on an iPad with my Bluetooth keyboard... that would be nice.
That could become my primary web tool.

Mind you... a big part of what I do in BBEdit requires Applescript, so
if that is not supported by the iPad, I'm no better off with BBEdit
than FTPonTheGo.

While I too would be extremely interested in BBEdit Lite for iPad,
there is, in fact, such an editor already available. It's available at
the app store for $3.99 and includes all the features people have
mentioned above as being sufficient. It's called "Editor for iPad". I
haven't tested it because I don't have an iPad yet. But soon, ...
soon.

That price -- $3.99 -- is enough to give pause to any developer. Dare
we ask Barebones to create BBEL for iPad and then sell it for less
than ten bucks? I know I wouldn't want to be within a stones throw if
I were suggesting it to them. >:-]

Re: BBEdit for iPad?

2010-05-24 Thread Keith X
Thanks for the feedback Fritz, I'm aware of most of the issues you
raise.

I understand that I will need to link the iPad to my wonderful Apple
Bluetooth keyboard to use a tool like BB Edit most of the time. I
also know that with the current version of the iPad OS that file
handling is clunky at best. However I have little doubt that "cloud"
file handling will get a lot better soon, probably sometime this fall.
If there is a way to make a file go from my Dropbox HTML & PHP file
collection to my web server I'll be a happy camper.

90% of my laptop use is web and email. I need to use it for web work
primarily when I'm on the road, for things like updating ad rotations
for a new ad campaign. I'd rather use an iPad than a laptop most of
the time, when I need to do heavy lifting I have a desktop system for
that.

I don't need anything like full BB Edit functionality for the iPad. I
need keyword coloring for PHP, HTML, & CSS. I need to open, save,
create and delete *.html, *.css, & *.php files. If that's all iPad BB
Edit did it would be better than anything currently in the App store.
Search and replace would be nice to have too, then it would be
infinitely better than anything currently available for the iPad.

Yup, I agree, we're talking about a v1.0 rethinking of BB Edit. If I
could buy it today I would.

As for the perceived shortcomings of tablet vs. mouse & keyboard, that
wouldn't affect me at all. If it's marginally slower with iPad OS 3.2
or 4.1 I don't care. I'm not going to write 10,000 lines of code with
it.

Lastly, regarding the Barebones resource issues, think about this: OS
11. I'm willing to bet that most of the work done on today's iPad
products will carry over to OS 11, ie. touch for Mac. If I were in
the software business (rather than the internut business) I'd be
investing most of my future R&D on the iPad OS.

Um. You used a laptop computer for the kind of text-editing task that demands a
power tool like BBEdit. You are replacing it with a device that doesn't have a
keyboard,* and has a system for storing and exporting documents that is, to be
kind, very awkward. The screen is much smaller, so examining more than one
document would be painful. You're willing to make the leap on the faith that

Do you see flaws in this? I never, ever say this, but if you _need_ a
keys-mouse-and-hard-drive computer, and you can't afford a $600 + KVM Mac mini,
your iPad money is better spent on a Linux, or even Windows, box. They're cheap
(to use a very precise term).

An iPad BBEdit would require an incredible amount of rethinking (it can't be
the same product), and I would guess that most of it would have to be done from
scratch. I'm not saying that it's beyond the considerable powers of Bare

Count me in as +1 for BBEdit for iPad!

I've been using BBEdit for years and have recommended it to tons of
clients. While I don't have an iPod or iPhone, the iPad is very
enticing. I climb mountains and maintain websites. It could replace my
MacBook Air, shaving a pound and a half off my back, and I could make
very good use of the 3G access.

Apart from email and web, all I need are a good text editor and ftp
client - but they would be essential. I'll add a vote here for
BBEdit!

Formatting could be done after transfer to a full Mac anyway. Would be nice to

Re: iPad

2010-02-22 Thread RobS
It's interesting to note that the iWork apps in the iPad can read in
Microsoft Office files as well as iWorks for OS X files, but can
output only iWorks files or PDFs. It seems as if connecting to the Mac
is done through Bluetooth or via a WI-FI network, like an iPhone would
do. I can't recall seeing anything about a hardware connection.

I would be VERY interested in a simplified (if necessary) BBEdit for
the iPad. I rarely do anything but web work, so those are the parts of
BBE I need, but I'll forgive others for muddying the waters with their
needs. ;-)

The iPhone OS is a strange beast. The unit won't allow for a lot of
the things I wish to use on plain old OS X. However, there are
rumours about (and rumours at best) that an OS X version of the iPad
is imminent. I find that the iPhone OS (although OS X is the
underpinnings of this presentation) is more of a display type of OS,
instead of providing the tools we know so well in OS X. Different
worlds.

For instance, how would you save files? How transfer them to a proper
Mac?

Interesting idea though.

TextWrangler for the iPad would do, and I'd pay for it. I do't need
all the features of BBEdit, just a text editor with PHP syntax
coloring and FTP open would do.

Nope, it really doesn't. It doesn't need the pro-level editing stuff, it
doesn't need projects, shell worksheets, disk browser, or text-factories. It
probably doesn't need multi-file though that could be nice. It needs ftp,
regex, and most the things in the Text menu.

It would make fixing stuff on-the-run much more pleasant than trying to do
stuff on the iPhone in a terminal.

The X11 feature is labelled "coming soon". I wonder. There is some new
Apple-proprietary chip in the thing. I wonder if there will be a gcc compiler

Re: iPad

I think a well done text editor would be an essential “work in a pinch” app
to have on a device like this.

I doubt that app would need to be as full featured as BBEdit, but someone
has to fill that void on the iPad. I wonder who might do a good job of it?

Probably. But let me tell you a bit more than I really know. There isn't
really anything like the iPad. Yes, all the parts exist but haven't been
combined quite this way or targeted at quite this opportunity. So the
designers don't really know what all it is that an iPad needs. That is
where application development comes to play. There is nothing quite like
building applications for a device to find its flaws. The poor iWork
team was probably having to retarget for a new iPad every month during
most of those 2 years.

That was one of my first thoughts after the event. I was really hoping
the iPad's OS was going to be capable of running Mac apps natively,
but got disappointed. Well, that and no USB port. Being able to use a
program like BBEdit on the iPad would very much increase the
likeliness of me getting one as I would haul it and the nifty keyboard
dock to work with me where I'm forced to use Windows all day and miss
having an awesome text editor like BBEdit.

Hasn't the iWork team been working the last TWO YEARS on the new iWork for the
iPad?

I think porting over BBEdit (or BBEdit Lite) to the iPad is a great idea.
However, I've not seen the SDK and I haven't even seen the iPad. How feasible
is it?

I dunno. It would be cool. It would be really cool.

I was kinda hoping Rich would be getting involved in the 'suicide project'
myself, but it's a week in, 2000 emails, and no sign of him as yet. Either he's
hiding on the devel list or he really has no interest.
