Re: [beagleboard] USB transmission speed

2013-11-02 Thread William Hermans
Well anything above 12 Megabytes/second is going to go to waste for your
case anyhow. Max theoretical for 100Mbit / fast ethernet is 12 Megabytes /
second. You will never see that *ever*. Still, I've booted from USB over
the host port and I am getting 10.6 MB/s. This is even with an old
PATA<->USB 2.0 with no features according to hdparm.

Also, you do not need a hub. Using an external powered hard drive case
would work fine. I'd also imagine the hub is slowing things down some for
you.

I am also using one of RCN's Kernels . . .

[beagleboard] BBB won't talk to me

2013-11-02 Thread Jim Hodgers

Some time ago I bought a BBB from Adafruit. When I tried to load it nothing
happened. I went to the BBB Start page on the web and loaded the drivers as
instructed but when I tried to go to 192.168.7.2, I got a "not found"
error. I loaded the flasher image from the web as instructed, unzipped, put
on a microSD, installed, and rebooted with Switch pressed, went to
192.168.7.2, still nothing. I then used the non-flash image and rebooted
with that image, still nothing. I bought the Serail-USB cable ant connected
it as instructed, Windows(7) found a Serial port as com18 but it did not
show up in File manager nor would Putty connect when set to Com18-115200
Baud. At this point because my project would use more than 1 BBB, I ordered
another from Adafruit. This one worked immediately. At this point several
months have elapsed, do I contact Adafruit or is there another path to
take?

[beagleboard] kernel linux

2013-11-02 Thread nicola_bb1C4
Hi, everybody

I'm a student and for thesis i have to describe every function that the
kernel calls, when an usb is connected.
At the moment i'm working well using printk on each core's file.
I've seen that every connection of usb key, starts with the call
"usb_hcd_irq()".

My question is which are the functions that calls usb_hcd_irq()?

Another trouble is what's the first function that is called when the
pull-up of usb port became high?

Thanks, in advance.
Nicola

Re: [beagleboard] Re: BeagleBone Black: Ethernet transmits packets but does not receive them

2013-11-02 Thread Gerald Coley
-This sounds to be either SW or Network related.

-It could be bad cable.

-It could be a DHCP server issue or a bad IP address such that the router
does not know where to route messages.

-The fact it happens on two cards, makes it less likely to be a board issue.

-Make sure the Ethernet cable is plugged in before you power up the board.

-I have seen that if you have the USB cable connected and you have run the
getting started stuff, the board decides to create its own DHCP server,.
That can sometimes mess up the Ethernet. Make sure USB is unplugged from
the PC and power up the board. Then ping the address as set by your DHCP
sever to the assigned address.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: I2C and Invensense MPU6050 Driver

2013-11-02 Thread clarkbriggs101
Jason,
I apologize for taking so long to answer. It wasn't quick to figure out
which breakout board we had with the MPU6050 on it. It is apparently a Kootek®
Arduino GY-521 MPU-6050 Module from Amazon.
Itis wired:

P9_1->Gnd

P9_3->VCC

P9_19 ->SCL

P9_20 -> SDA

Your P9_19 SCL and P9_20 SDA should be fine.

Later posts suggest you can talk to you device and have shown us via W
Smith the way to straighten out which bus is which.

[beagleboard] Interfacing BeagleBoneBlack USB Boot with libusb on OSX

2013-11-02 Thread Vlad Ungureanu
Hello!

I am trying to port the BeagleBoot
*https://github.com/ungureanuvladvictor/BBBlfs.git* project from Linux to
OSX. My Linux project was based on libusb to take over the device and
communicate with it from an user level application. However on OSX the
kernel takes over the device and the libusb_kernel_driver_active function
is just a stub on OSX. I asked around the libusb ML about codeless kexts
for OSX to prevent the kernel taking over my device but got no valid
answer. Also I tried to read the Apple documentation on them but I get my
ears caught in all of that and have a hard time to understand it. I found
some examples on the internet and tried to modify them but same result,
kernel still takes over my device.

Are here some OSX kexts experts or at least does anybody have any idea how
to tackle this problem?

Thank you in advance!

[beagleboard] What happens when you boot the eMMC flasher?

2013-11-02 Thread James Yeo
So, trying to re-flash Angstrom onto my eMMC. I downloaded the eMMC flasher
image, put it on a card and booted from it. Thus far, I believe I have
followed the agenda perfectly.

I was presented with a login prompt, so I logged in as root. Nothing
happened except a command prompt.

So I did some more googling, and found this page:
http://www.crashcourse.ca/wiki/index.php/BBB_software_update_process

And I went and executed /usr/bin/emmc.sh. the script is currently
executing, but it's getting a lot of error messages of the "tar: can't make
dir" and "/media/1: device is busy" type, so I'm fairly certain that in
spite of the ongoing frenetic blinking of the onboard LEDs, I am not going
to come out the other end of this script with a working BBB.

I can boot from a regular angstrom SD card without a problem, but I want to
be able to boot without holding down the user button. what am I doing wrong?

[beagleboard] USB transmission speed

2013-11-02 Thread thomas . zell
I'm trying to use the BBB as a (very) lightweight NAS. Unfortunately, I'm a
bit disappointed with the transfer speed I can achieve over the USB port.
I've now tried different kernels such as Robert C Nelsons 3.8.13-bone28 and
3.12.0-rc5-bone6, different USB storage devices (such as a USB 2.0 flash
drive and a USB 3.0 hard disk), and tried both directly attaching the flash
drive to the BBB as well as using a powered USB hub. The HD of course only
works on the hub. The BBB is running on a 5V external power supply.

Using different tools (hdparm and dd) the USB read speed always maxes out
at about 9MB/s which is far less than the same devices deliver on other
systems (e.g. about 25MB/s on my Raspberry Pi).

Does anyone have an idea why this is the case or how this can be improved?

[beagleboard] Beaglebone Black freezing, USB related?

2013-11-02 Thread mike
Hi all

New here, but I've been experimenting with the BeagleBone black for a few
months now with much success - I2C, SPI, ADC, GPIO, UARTS are all working
for me, and I have a my custom cape wining it's way from the fab to me as I
type. But now I'm trying to integrate it with the USB peripherals I'll need
and I am getting constant freezes.

My setup. I have a good power supply (3A 5V) connected via the barrel
connector. I have a powered USB hub from a reputable manufacturer and which
also has a 3A supply. In that hub I have a bluetooth dongle, an Atheros 9K
based Wifi dongle, and a Huawei E3131 3G modem. There's also an ethernet
connection. I'm running a system derived from the Ubuntu self-installer on
eLinux.org (ie that plus updates and a few additional packages) with
the 3.8.13-bone28 kernel.

The symptoms are after a variable number of hours the device hangs. The
heartbeat LED stops and it drops off the network. I'm normally running with
HDMI disabled but when I enable it I see nothing on the screen except the
console login - no panic message, although when it's hung the cursor stops
blinking. I have to power cycle it and when it comes back there is nothing
in the logs.

So I haven't got much to work from here. I had loads of issues with another
Wifi card so switched to one with the atheros chipset, but I still suspect
it's the USB subsystem causing the problems as I had no issues until I
started plugging in devices (plus the hotplug doesn't seem to work reliably
under 3.8.13).

So I guess my questions are:

1. Does anyone have any suggestions - I gather a few people have been here
before me.

2. Is there any way I can get some logs out of this? I've been running
LInux for 20 years but am new to embedded, and I find a crash with no panic
message quite disconcerting!

3. Is it likely to be hardware or software causing this? The beaglebone
black is about 3 months old, so I think it's the latest revision.

4. At this point I guess my next option is upgrading to the EXPERIMENTAL or
TESTING kernels from Robert Nelson (at 3.12.0-rc3 and rc7 respectively at
the moment) - has anyone tried these, and are they fit for purpose?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers... Mike

[beagleboard] No sign of life.

2013-11-02 Thread Tekk3y
Hey, I got my Beagle Bone Black yesterday with a 3.5 touch lcd cape. I
tried using the cape it booted file and I tried the usb host mode which
also worked fine (Of which then i installed the drivers). After this I
tried one of these methods again and my beagle board wouldn't give me any
output, I then connected it via a hdmi cable to my monitor which till
didn't seem to help. Finally I decided to connect to it my pc to try and
find out what the problem was but its no longer showing up on my PC. When I
plug it into the mains and my pc several of the LEDs light up but other
than that noting else seems to be happening.
Can someone help me figure out what's wrong?

Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

[beagleboard] Re: Ethernet on BBB is setup for static IP but unable to access server

2013-11-02 Thread arunbarnabasjohn
I managed to solve the problem, but I cannot understand how the solution
works.

After adding a delay of 30 seconds and then executing the ifconfig settings
causes the ethernet to be setup correctly. So this script works correctly.

#!/bin/bash

#setup the ethernet address

sleep 30

ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.88 netmask 255.255.255.0
route add default gw 192.168.0.1
ifconfig eth0 up

So adding a delay of 30 seconds after startup solved the problem.

Could anyone explain why this is required...Is there a better method of
setting up the ethernet on the BBB.

I tried the method given on derek malloy's website, but for some reason the
settings get overwritten..

thanks

Hi Tom,
I had a look on those patch series. Just to check: I found 3 of v2
(2013-08-14 x 3, 2013-09-10 x 3, 2013-09-30 x 4) and one v8 (2013-10-10 x
5). Do your mean these series I should apply?

Crap. On third reboot (full power off/on), the device is experiencing the
same musb: Babble Interrupt error as before.

So... this is a hardware issue? The BBB is powered by a separate adapter
