If you aren't already totally confused, here are a few more abbreviations to memorize... Enjoy! RE: Enough is Enough
Kenny: It sounds to me as though you are really the one who wants the dog. So, (1) if you are willing take a light vacuum (e.g., Eureka BOSS) through the house now and then (in between the major weekly vaccuuming with the Hummer) and (2) brush/comb your Berner weekly (which if done weekly doesn't take long -- Bernie/Bernice will grow to love it and you for doing it), then you can own a Berner and manage the dog hair. Note -- I said manage the dog hair, not eliminate it. On the other hand, if you are waiting for your kids or your wife to do this for you, I wouldn't get anything furry that mom didn't buy into 100%. In my experience, it is the rare kid (there are a few) who takes total responsibility for the care and feeding of a pet. It is strongly advised that the adult woman in the family want the dog, too, since by most accounts she will be the primary caretaker in such circumstances. According to my Invisible Fence installer, he is approached by close to 25% of the adult females who, by default, care for the kids' or dad's pet -- they try to give the dog away. Burning Lawn
With Spring right around the corner - does anyone have any solutions for urine burns in the lawn? I would love to prevent the problem but my berner baby only wants to pee on our newly landscaped sod lawn!! Is there a pill or solution you can actually add to food/water to dilute the acidity in the urine? Thanks! Robin Saratoga (My first wonderful berner baby!)
RE: Big Brag
Alex: If you go to this web page, you can get definitions for the American Kennel Club (AKC) title suffixes (e.g., CD - companion dog, a first level obedience title) and Prefixes (e.g., CH - champion, a conformation (show dog) title). UKC (United Kennel Club - similar to the AKC) has titles listed under the event type (e.g., obedience -- see http://www.ukcdogs.com/rules/o-1.html; conformation -- http://www.ukcdogs.com/rules/c-3.html), etc. You have to dig a little harder to find them on the UKC site. Certified Therapy Dogs (e.g., TDI) can be found at the TDI site http://www.tdi-dog.org/. (Delta is also a therapy organization similar to Therapy Dogs International). The TDI certification is based on the AKC's Canine Good Citizen designation. A CGC is not technically a title as defined by the AKC. Hope that helps. Nancy Melone Mars, PA

Berner hair/sheddin/reducing the amount
We have two wonderful berners. My wonderful wife vac's once a day and wet mops the floor at least once a day. Along with going to the groomers every 3-6 weeks has greatly reduced the berner hair in our home. I do notice that two days proceding a bath they lose alot of hair(tons). We therefore try to keep them in the outside kennel the day or two after bathing. Regular bathing using a sheding blade and brushing the opposite way does wonders. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE! Re: Had enough
Kenny -- Do NOT let the overprotective BMD breeders scare you off. If all current BMD owners had to undergo the grilling of an overprotective breeder, I'll bet 1/2 of us would have our Berners taken away! There is no perfect home, anymore than there is a perfect person. It's kinda like having your first baby - you're never really ready cuz you've never done it before! Chill, take the things you have read with a grain (or bucket!) of salt, and just think about WHY you want a dog. Don't get a dog for the kids or anyone else cuz, if they get disenchanted after a time, it's back to being your responsibility. Do YOU want the responsibility for a dog for the next 10-12 years (you don't know how long it will live when you get it - it could be one of the blessed ones). Do you have the time for housebreaking (if you get a puppy), training, exercise, etc.? Are you ready to feed, groom, medicate, clean up after, give meds to a dog? Are you, or your family, so picky about your home's appearance that chewed items dog hairballs will drive you nuts, or WORSE yet - make you resent the dog! It may seem kinda silly to ask all these things, and maybe you think it's a little extreme - after all it's just a dog. But to the people on this List, it's more than just a dog. And we are very protective of the breed, and every single individual dog! Best wishes, whatever you decide. You must be a smart person - after all, you love the Berners! high prices of advetising
I called my local newspaper to ask the price of an ad. I was shocked at the price for 3 lines, 3 days$40.00. I just wanted to say the usual---don't buy from poor breeders or puppy mill. Re: Lyme disease and vaccine
Barb, I can't give you hard and fast answers, I'm not sure anyone has them at this point...but a couple of things might help you in your decision making process. There are essentially (3) different types of tests for Lyme disease. The in house test is usually called the IDEX test. It checks for the presence of the Lyme causing rickettsia along with heartwork and one other thing that escapes me right now. This is a relatively new test (couple of years on the market), I've heard some vets think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread and others who have no confidence in it. I have no idea if/how the results of this test are impacted by vaccination. The second type of test is the conventional antibody titre that can be run by commercial labs like Antech, et al. This test is not accurate for dog's that have been vaccinated. Titres for vaccinated dogs have to be run using the Western Blot methodology which is usually done at one of the university labs in the upper midwest, ...MSU I think but it could be UM. It does take a bit longer and cost more than the conventional test, but it's the same blood draw in terms of your dog. As for vaccinations, they vary as well. Personally, I would stay clear of the old vaccine which has been around for years...it has a poor track record in safety and efficacy. But there's a newer Lyme vaccine that utilizes recombinant DNA that came on the market a couple of years ago. I have no idea what the track record is for this one but I'd expect you'll find information on the web. Poke around for the brand and then try the FDA website. -Sherri Venditti

Re: When to switch to adult food?
In a message dated 3/4/2003 5:01:05 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: My vet recommends to switch to adult food soon. My Berner pup Bijou is now 5 month old and eats 3 times a day Eukanuba puppy food. Isn't the switch a bit early, since Bijou is still growing. What you guys think? Also when did you guys switch to 2 feedings a day? My first resource for feeding instructions is the breeder my pup came from. If you don't have a the breeder as a qualified resource, then I'd probably be inclined to go with the manufacturer's guidelines. I assume you're feeding the Large Breed Puppy formula? I think Eukanuba recommends chaning over at 12 or 18 months, I don't recall which but it definietle isn't at 5 months. If you think about it, changing at 5 months would be quite contrary to the purpose of feeding the L.B. puppy formula to begin with. At that age, Bijou is just hitting a major growth spurt. The premise of the diet is that it's formulated based on Iams research into skeletal development of large breeds. That skeletal development goes at an extraordinary pace during much of the first year of life. During that rapid growth phase, dogs are at serious risk of developing several skeletal diseases that are fueled by improper diet. So, if I were raising a pup on a L.B. formula I had faith in, I'd go to at least 12months...possibly 18. but that's just me, you might want to discuss with your vet the reasons he feels changing at 5 months is the best course. -Sherri Venditti

Specialty room plea
Hi everyone, This is a plea from someone who is definitely going to the Specialty, to those who have decided not to go to the specialty but still have a room reservation. My plea is that you simply cancel your room reservation so that those of us who are desperate to get a room and are patiently waiting on the waiting list, get that room you're hanging on to. Even though rooms are not supposed to be transfered from one person to another, I know it's going to happen, however it's not very fair to those of us who were not fortunate to get one of those rooms. I don't want this email to spark flames, I am just hoping that it will initiate those who have decided not to attend, and do have a reservation, to give that reservation back to the hotel so some of us can have the opportunity of getting a room at the Specialty Hotel. Re: BERNER-L digest 4304Kennys Choice
I took insurance out on our Berner Deuce when he arrived. We have PetCare Insurance - QuickCareGold Plan. It costs $37.95 a month because Berners are considered a select breed . I have only had to use it twice ( not for anything major thank goodness!) . There is a $50 deductible for each claim- but it covers everything except routine shots check-ups and spay/neutering. It DOES cover any orthopedic problems, including hip and elbow surgeries up to $3,000 per incident. So far it seems pretty good. Took about 2-3 weeks to get my check in the mail, but so far no complaints. You can find more out about it on their website petcareinsurance.com
Moses' first official post-chemo exam at Angell
Today Moses had his first official post-chemotherapy-amputation (bone cancer) appointment at Boston's Angell Memorial Animal Hospital. This was a regular, scheduled appointment with his internal medicine specialist for an examination and plans for future cancer care/treatment. Moses recently had Xrays showing that his lungs are clear, extensive blood work, and an exam by a neurologist who deemed him quite intact in this regard. At this point, Moses will be monitored closely with another appointment in several weeks or so and we shall gradually wean him off the Prednisone which was prescribed for his severe episode of pain several weeks ago. He is improving a little every day but his back still bothers him some when he is lifted. His Angell doctor is still not ruling out a possible spread of cancer to Moses' spine but we are not at the point yet where a bone scan, MRI, or CT scan is on the agenda and, to be frank, if the cancer has spread to the spine, there is nothing that I know that can be done to stop it. Moses is a cooperative patient and a wonderful dog; his joie de vie is inspirational and contagious! Lisa Allen _ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Karen and Stevie
Dear List, Things are going along pretty well just now. I really think that Stevie will improve once all this dreadful, hazardous ice has left us. Stevie is still not great on anything but flat surfaces and the ice is awful. But a guardian angel is sending us some boots to assist Stevie's traction and protect his feet. I think it will help enormously. Now after my little escapade on Saturday, Stevie has remained On Guard more like the protector rather than the protected. My son has been over more and today he brought his dog Mika over for her and Stevie's first visit since Stevie's accident. It was rather a bizarre meeting. Poor Mika was trembling so hard and so excited to see Stevie and Stevie was just as excited but without the trembling part. But Mika is like that at the best of times. We kept her on a leash and just allowed them to sniff and explore, they were both crying and whining and the tails beating on the floor stirred up all the little black dust berners that have been hiding. Oh well, like I said I will never complain about hair or tumbleweeds again, I am just glad to have them! We kept their visit short, to about 15 minutes, and actually the last five minutes of it they spent laying beside one another and Stevie just couldn't stop licking her face. She was totally tolerant and when it was time for my son to take her out to the car, Stevie walked her to the door like he always used to, tails still wagging. He genuinely seemed happy and he was actually smiling. His Phenobarb is now completely discontinued and perhaps that is helping as well. I was so pleased with their interaction that it left me in tears to say the least. This was more the normal Stevie that I remember, my love and my heart. I certainly agree with all of you who wrote to me after my hospitalization on Saturday that the separation was probably beneficial to Stevie, and tomorrow we will separate again. I have to go to hospital again and have the pins removed from my finger (one of my frostbitten digits was actually fractured as well) and another procedure performed as well so, I will have to be away most of the day. My oldest son will be with Stevie in my absence, so he will, of course, be in wonderful hands. Thank you to all who wrote with love, support and prayers for us once again!! Berner hugs and Gentle kisses from Karen and Stevie
Protection dog or not?
I had a terrible scare last night. I thought there was a burglar in my house at 2:30 this morning. I started hearing noises downstairs, so I thought I would send Tulie down to check it out, while I was behind her. Well, Tulie was snoozing comfortably on my bed, so I had to wake her up. I started telling her there was a kitty down stairs and making the Psst noise. That always gets her going. We went to the end of the hall and I told her to go get the kitty. She went down to the first landing and stood there and looked up at me. I kept telling her to go while I was walking down. Of course by now if there had been an intruder, I think they would have heard us. At the bottom of the stairs I have a quilt nailed over the doorway to help keep the downstairs warm in the winter. Tulie always walks through that, but not last night. So, I stood on the stairs and held open the quilt for Tulie to go into the living room. Tulie walked straight into the kitchen and stood looking at her cookies. I guess she thought thats why we got up in the middle of the night is for me to give her a treat. So I guess the answer to a burglar would be for me to throw food on them, then Tulie would go after them. Everything ended up fine and we had a good nights sleep after that.
