Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 beta in an unstable, but usable state...

2009-08-29 Thread Teus de Jong

There were some rough days (especially when going back from SQLite to
mySQL and going to the test website). But I have been able to listen to
music every day with every upgrade. I think the longest time I have been
busy with an update was about half an hour. The controller has been a
bit unreliable (spontaneous restarts, etc.), but that phase seems over
now. So for a unstable beta version, I see it as a very acceptable
transition process.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 beta in an unstable, but usable state...

2009-08-29 Thread MadScientist

I'm afraid I'm in sxr71's camp. After changing players they all
disappeared from the menu and a restart didn't cure the problem. This
was using the latest build of SC.

I may have another go today if I get an hour or so spare time

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] changes to internetradio without good reason ?

2009-08-29 Thread Moonbase

To my liking, too much has been pressed into the new and shiny (urgs!)
App category. And Apps are player-specific.

So yes, it's a hassle to manually keep track of what needs to be
installed on which player — and probably loose it during the next
firmware update.

Apps (which aren't, mostly, but just menu extensions) can be nice,
but a feasible default set should be pre-selected, and a feature
introduced like Make this app available on all players.

They're talking about new managers and people who shall optimize the
system for average Joes (aka normal users) — but what they -do- is
make it all more unusable and cluttered and have much more keypresses
needed instead of less.

I do understand that there's a lot going on behind the scenes, like
adopting everything for the new hardware, and I can understand things
not working in beta versions, but I cannot understand heading the whole
business unit in (what I feel) the wrong direction.

Like, for heaven's sake, who wants a small 4 touch screen device in
his HiFi rack which cannot be moved (due to the cabling) and needs
crossing the living room to even read what's on the screen, or press
Mute or Next song? (I -love- my Duet — when it works ;-)

Oh well. This was supposed to become a positive post, but I*couldn't
help it. And it takes some before I get this negative ...

This is a known and accepted bug.
https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=12428

The workaround is to delete all pdk folders at start up via a scheduled
task with the following commends modified for your install.

**startup.bat**
REM blow away old Squeezecenter cache to avoid crashes
rd /Q /S c:\windows\temp\
md c:\windows\temp\
rd /Q /S C:\Documents and Settings\bphilp\Local Settings\Temp\
md C:\Documents and Settings\bphilp\Local Settings\Temp\
**startup.bat**

Update on Snow Leopard status: SC 7.3.4 as of r28351 should run on Snow
Leopard in either 32-bit or 64-bit mode. The Preference Pane only
supports 32-bit, so if you have a 64-bit system you need to click the
annoying button to restart the PrefPane in 32-bit mode.

7.4 needs more work before it's fully compatible. I hope to get that
 done early this weekend.

Thank you Andy. I installed the August 29th version 7.3.4-28351 for
Macintosh. The good news: The SqueezeCenter pane app, when launched,
shows Stop Server meaning it is running. The button for Web Access
is now active, in black as opposed to being grayed out. The unit
connected to the receiver is now showing White as opposed to Blue and I
just confirmed that, with the remote, everything is working fine to play
music.

The bad news: As I noticed what MacMeijers just said, I too have the
same problem. Usually clicking on Web Access brings up two web pages.
I currently tries to load Local:9000 and it can't find our load in the
server (my hard drive I assume) nor does the URL for Settings and
updating or changing or replacing and rescanning come up.

Any suggestions Andy or anyone else?

Getting there

Thanks!

One more thing I should tell you Andy: When I first launched the pane,
without my having touched anything, my main music hard drive was
accessed for a few minutes then a separate hard drive with my iTunes
items also was accessed for a while. These are my two Logitech music
source choices so this seemed like it was polling both drives and/or
updating something. But, subsequently, pressing Web Access lead to the
Local:9000 page coming up in Safari but then it would not find the
server, which seems odd.

Do you think some of the new Security changes in Snow Leopard may be an
issue? Here's what MacWorld said about the changes:

Security The Security pane has undergone some big changes from Leopard
to Snow Leopard. For starters, if you opt to require a password when
waking the computer from sleep or the screen saver, you can now specify
a time-delay (5 seconds; 1, 5, or 15 minutes; or 1 or 4 hours) before
that password is necessary.

You can also disable Snow Leopard’s new Location Services (see “Snow
Leopard’s little changes”) in the Security pane, as well as reset
warnings and permissions for applications.

Finally, the firewall settings have been revamped considerably. The
main firewall tab provides a simple On/Off setting; to configure the
firewall, you click the Advanced button. Your options now include
blocking all incoming connections, automatically allowing connections to
signed software (those with a valid certificate authority), enabling
stealth mode, and configuring individual firewall rules. Leopard’s
option to enable and view firewall logs is gone.

Thanks,

A much simpler and safer way to do this is to update to 7.3.4.

Your script might try to delete anything from any program. Eg. Office will
write to those folder too. You can't just wipe them. It might upset quite
a few programs.

I've also put the winning team of MusicIP Mixer + SqueezeCenter and I’m
really happy with it. I've been told that Amplified
(http://www.amplifiedmusicservices.com I think!) will pursue the
development of the Mixer. Future will tell :)

Somewhere in this tread I believe someone was asked if anyone knew of a
tool that will remove/replace difficult characters (UTF-8 or LATIN-1).
I use a Linux tool called detox together with Media Monkey that has a
modified INI file to clean up file and directory names. This has solved
most of my problems and leaves the tags unaffected.
