Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Placement of AppGalery-menu on SBC

2009-09-11 Thread Michael Herger
The Home menu should really just contain items which you access on
daily basis and App Gallery isn't one of these things.

While this is true, we have to expose it clearly to the user. If it was
hidden somewhere deep in some settings menu, most users probably would
never discover what possibilities they had. We want the user to discover
new apps. This allows us to have a clean main menu to start with and let
the user add what he likes only (instead of the flood of services we used
to have there).

It is possible to hide it by configuring the Home menu to not show it
but then it gets completely hidden as there isn't any way to enabled it
 under My Apps or Setting.

Might be worth a bug report/enhancement request. Would you mind?... Thanks!

Settings App Gallery isn't deeply hidden - it would be a logic place to find
new things to configure.

If you want users to discover new apps, then have a New Apps gallery on the
Home menu, ONLY when there are newer apps available.

If App Gallery is permanently on the Home menu, and it always has the full list
of all apps, then a user may visit the list a couple of times, but then not
revisit again, and maybe even work out how to disable it, and thus never find
new apps in the future.

[SlimDevices: Beta] Squeezeplay beta update

2009-09-11 Thread kesey

The Squeezeplay beta has not been updated on the download site since
June 23rd 2009.

Is there a more current version on the Software development system
which includes fixes for some of the more irritating bugs, e.g.
https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10237 which is said to have
been fixed?

If yes, could this be posted for download and testing please? That way
those of us who would like to enjoy listening to our music via
Squeezeplay, as we do on our Squeezeboxes, could help in beta testing
current production.

But it's not permanent, is it? At least with r7485 the user can go to
Settings Home Menu and select/de-select App Gallery. However, if App
Gallery is removed from the SBC home menu then it doesn't seem to appear
under Settings or anywhere else. In other words, the user has to restore
it to the Home Menu in order to regain access to App Gallery.

I can see the logic of having App Gallery default to being on the Home
Menu, to increase user awareness of the possibilities. Afterward the
user can remove it from the home menu, although I think it would be
better if removing it from the home menu would shift it to the Settings
menu, rather than disappearing it completely.

[SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 Desktop Squeezeplay builds with Radio/Touch/new Controller UI now available

2009-09-11 Thread bklaas

With the public announcement of the impending release of Squeezebox
Radio and Squeezebox Touch, we've now made Squeezeplay Desktop binaries
available.

http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.4
the links near the bottom for OS X and Windows Squeezeplay are what you

want. *Note*: unfortunately we are not successfully building linux
binaries at this time.

These builds contain all of the work that's gone into the
upcoming 7.4/Squeezebox Radio release, as well as a great deal of work
for the 8.0/Squeezebox Touch release. This includes UI skins for Radio,
Touch, as well as the 7.4 Controller reskin effort.

Desktop Squeezeplay is a nice way to test drive the look-and-feel of
the software UI before purchase, as well a nice testing platform for 3rd
party applet/plugin development.

When you launch the app it will default to the Touch's 3' UI. IMO,
this
is the best UI for desktop use currently.

However, to change to the Radio UI:
Settings-Screen-Select Skin-QVGA Landscape Skin

similarly, you can change to Controller UI by:
Settings-Screen-Select Skin-QVGA Portrait Skin

after changing the skin, you will likely want to change the wallpaper
because it will still have a Touch-resolution wallpaper as its
background

to select a correctly sized wallpaper:
Settings-Screen-Wallpaper
and select a wallpaper of your liking.

cheers,
#!/ben

The only problem is how to detect that something is new ?

If it's considered new until you have entered the menu once there is a
risk the user has a hard time finding apps after he has installed the
first app since the menu then will disappear.

I suppose you might consider an application new until you have scrolled
so it has been selected once in the menu, that would leave the menu
enabled until you have scrolled through all apps. Of course, that might
instead cause questions asking how to get rid of the new apps
indication since all users might not realize they need to scroll through
all apps.

I agree with pippin that My Apps/App Gallery would be best, it makes
the applications as noticeable as the current solution but without
cluttering the home menu. Combined with the new apps indication that
would make sure no one misses them.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Placement of AppGalery-menu on SBC

2009-09-11 Thread Phil Meyer
I kind of like the idea of having some kind of indication when there is
a new or upgraded application.

The only problem is how to detect that something is new ?

I was thinking not so much automatically removing something when it has been
viewed, but when it has either been installed, or the user has selected an
ignore option. i.e. right-arrow into an item and be offered actions:
More Info - description about the plugin
Install - Put the item into My Apps, Home Menu, etc.
Ignore - indicate that you are not interested in the app, maybe move
the item into an Ignored category, so they can still be accessed later if
desired.

In addition, if an app has been ignored and a newer (major) version is
available, it could be restored to the App Gallery original category.

The App Gallery menu could change to App Gallery - New! when there are
new/changed apps available.

I agree with pippin that My Apps/App Gallery would be best, it makes
the applications as noticeable as the current solution but without
cluttering the home menu. Combined with the new apps indication that
would make sure no one misses them.

That would be okay, although I can understand why App Gallery is separate from
My Apps initially. Could be a little confusing at first - user hasn't got any
apps, so why look in My Apps? Personally, if it were to go that way, I'd
change My Apps to Apps, and then include App Gallery within Apps.

I'd personally prefer App Gallery to be in Settings, and keep My Apps for
installed apps only. The first thing I do when I get new software or consumer
products is to go through Settings to see what is available, and
Settings/installable extras should be in one place.

If it's giving weird results, seems worth leaving it out for now. From
what little I know of Flickr, it seems to me that a more interesting
option would be the ability to enter a tag (or even multiple) and pull

If you try running it, are you seeing anything in the task manager process
list?

Is anything showing up in the Event Viewer, specifically the Applications
Tab?

I've been running recent enough SP builds with the branch code for some
time. I do, however, have Visual Studio installed which may be supplying
libraries if the build isn't providing them properly in the installer.

You should check both tabs as the applications tab doesn't show all

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 Desktop Squeezeplay builds with Radio/Touch/new Controller UI now available

2009-09-11 Thread JJZolx

Same problem here on XP Pro.

I installed it over the old SqueezePlay and it ran just fine, except
that I couldn't get into My Apps (with an Invalid player ID message)
and when I tried to switch to mysqueezebox.com it crashed. On
test.sn.com I don't see the player, so I figured it somehow needed to be
registered on SN first. Couldn't see anything in settings that would let
me do that.

So I completely uninstalled, then re-installed.

Now, same as everyone else, it does nothing. Never runs. Nothing in
Windows Task Manager.

Kevin, try installing it again to a different folder and running that

Using Process Explorer, I see squeezeplay blip, then die. I was using
squeezeplay 7.3r5922 for some time. I uninstalled that. Also deleted
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\SqueezePlay just in
case. Then installed 7.4. No window. Uninstalled and reinstalled just in
case. Still no window. Just the aforementioned blip. Nothing that I
can find in event viewer either.

Two files are missing in a fresh install.
/mime/core.dll
/socket/core.dll

copying these from the older install location makes it work. Looks like
the project file must have lost these along the way.

Hi ben,

I'm on Windows XP Pro SP3 32 bit.

I originally deleted the (June build) old Squeezeplay, and installed
today's build clean. When I tried to run it, I got nothing at all. No
windows, no apparent activity.

I have been out for the last couple of hours...and have seen the latest
posts. I re-installed the old Squeezeplay, tried it out and it runs. I
then installed the new Squeezeplay (todays) and started it up. It runs,
but can't connect to my music library. It tells me to make sure my
computer is turned on and connected to my local network, and that
Squeezebox Server is running. I even have it plugged in:-)

When I try to enter my account details, it just sits there after I
enter the password...does not move when I select Done.

cheers,

kesey.

Would someone mind posting those files somewhere so that they could be
downloaded? Just until the Windows build is fixed.

Or, if it's still available someplace, a link to an older build of the
SqueezePlay installer.
