Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Need help to verify duplicate detection

2012-04-30 Thread MrSinatra

maybe a multipass detector then?

first pass, your current exact method, seems to work well.

second, slower pass, an audio fingerprint is made, and comparisons then
result in percent of likelihood something might be a dupe?

it would be cool if it could be done such that these dupes were
presented in such a way that the user could click and listen to judge
for themselves, and delete if need be. or reject the dupe as a false
positive, and report that to a central net source, to improve detection
methods.

maybe also develop tags that can be inserted, like a TXXX frame for hash
and another for fingerprint ID?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Need help to verify duplicate detection

2012-04-29 Thread MrSinatra

hey Erland,

couldn't the detector do degrees? meaning, exact matches would be 100%
certainty, but other files could be reported to be 98% likely to be
dupes, that kind of thing?

thats what i would need, something that gave me percentages, b/c i
believe i'll have lots of things that to me, are dupes, but wouldn't
pass the 100% exact match test.

Michael, i'm sorry but i don't know how to reproduce something thats
random. as you say, i have seen slimtray simply disappear or not even
load for reasons unknown, and it wasn't b/c of windows "hiding" systray
stuff. my solution was to run server as a service, and that seems to
work 100%. i've been doing that for a long time now. i can not say
that that is not coincidental though, i simply don't know. my exp on
this dates back to your introduction of slimtray, which goes back a few
years now?

no cause to be snarky.

if you run LMS to be a service, slimtray will ALWAYS be present. if you
DON'T run LMS as a service, nor have LMS "auto-start" on log on, then it
is possible that slimtray will NOT be present. i was simply suggesting
that running it as a service should make slimtray more robust/present.
that has been my exp.

u might find its better to run LMS as a service, so that way, server
will run, wake the machine, etc, even if someone is not logged into the
machine. at that point, slimtray should always work and show, as long
as you configure windows to always show it.

Erland,

you say votes and forums etc are no good for the devs to take cues
from... so just how then do you propose they do it? u make some valid
points but you seem to have a defeatist attitude. i don't mean that in
a personal way, but when you say "you've given up" etc it seems that
way. they used to ENCOURAGE VOTING, like Chris Owens, logitech
employee, remember him??? now thats no good?

i haven't given up in the sense that i do think a reasonable,
non-personal argument can be made that the devs, who btw WORK FOR
LOGITECH, (i don't accept this deflection argument of good guys vs bad
guys, which is insane in a corporate environment, you all are one
entity imo), should takes cues to the roadmap from votes for bug
tracker. how is that not reasonable? michael says they do, but when u
have a bug like 142 sit DEAD for as long as it does, how can anyone
believe that?

frankly, it seems to me it is completely reasonable to suggest that
they could implement ONE top ten voted bug per official release.

well, we disagree. i think its completely reasonable. and THEY
encouraged it, don't forget that. the posts of them doing so are right
in these very forums.

this has nothing to do with 15604, that was just an example, just as
142 is an example.

take your pick there of the highest voted bugs. ANY of the 11 open
ones would be fine by me. do one a release. is that really
impossible?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Lms 7.8?

making it personal when i said NOTHING of a personal nature is immature,
and deflects the actual points i was making that are valid and strictly
business. please, keep it on topic, don't obfuscate.

i have nothing against you, i appreciate the responses believe it or
not. i know you don't feel likewise, but so be it.

in any case, i'm not alone in feeling like you guys aren't taking cues
from bugs, forums posts, whatever. you can't have it both ways,
meaning u can't in one breath say bugs and votes matter, then say they
don't. surely you see the inherent contradictions in your own
statements?

to me, the proof is in the pudding, or in this case, actions. bugs
like 142 or 15604 or a handful of others have a lot of votes, yet they
are ignored. if u guys would commit to even doing just ONE highly
voted bug per release, i think you would not only see a huge sea change
in peoples attitudes, but you would encourage a lot more voting (and
therefore a more relevant sample size) in the process.

but in order for that to happen, u guys need to commit to that and then
deliver. so thats the question to u i pose:

WILL YOU GUYS COMMIT TO IMPLEMENTING AT LEAST ONE TOP TEN VOTED BUG PER
OFFICIAL RELEASE GOING FORWARD?

i think its a fair question.

i have to say, that while i appreciate your honesty, this is the worst
possible response b/c it just goes to show you guys ignore feedback.

first of all, there is only one bug with 100 votes. so by your
measure, no bug means anything, b/c no bug has enough votes to matter.

secondly, its nonsense to disregard votes. presidential polling that
is ACCURATE is only a small fraction of the overall population,
sometimes not even 1000 in the sample for a country of over 300
MILLION. bug votes are the same thing. and the barriers to bug voting
need to be kept in mind.

your answer, to me, says: "we do NOT care about voting, b/c it isn't
representative of anything statistically important."

that is a SAD state of affairs imo. and it means you guys aren't
taking cues from users.

wow, wonderful. number 1, support has nothing to do with certain bugs
or enhancements. people aren't going to call support over bug 142 for
instance, which you call one of the oldest and most popular bugs.

support is for immediate showstopping issues. votes on bug tracker
meanwhile should absolutely help guide the road map, as they are a good
idea of whats important to the SB population. i'm not saying they
should rule alone, but you guys need to stop IGNORING them, which is
what has gone on for YEARS now.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] LMS moving forward?

2012-02-06 Thread MrSinatra

i really like the idea of being able to make ISO clones of dvds and
blurays to create my own little local video library!

so AnyDVD can do this? can it beat the copy protection on all discs?
meaning, is it a simple, "one click" type process to create the ISO?

and once made, how do you browse them? do you tag them? use
filenames?

i disagree. most TVs suck at dlna/audio and video. apple tv does it
very well, but u gotta use itunes.

i think a lot of people want a product that can do audio and video
well, but that can also do audio without the TV on, and without itunes.

one other thing i really think the server needs to do is accept the
computers sound card output, and send it to the hardware. that would
allow people to use their own software with the hardware. i think
there are some 3rd party ways to do that, but it should be part of the
core app and easy imo. doing the same thing with video, and or keeping
the audio sync'd with video is a more difficult proposition, i
understand that.

it seems to me that they need a new, cheaper piece of hardware, that has
no display, that will do audio and video.

sound familiar? i said it years and years ago. apparently apple was
eavesdropping.

given that server does video now, and dlna, the above just seems so
obvious to me. if apple can sell a tiny box for $99 that does 720p,
surely logitech can figure out how to do 1080p for a few dollars more?

THATS how they need to compete and become relevant. if "syncing" is
all they got, they're done.

r u saying scans are all or nothing?

there is no way it should be designed that way... there should be
multiple scan modes. if u add an album, you shouldn't have to rescan

you still have yet to respond to the song title issue. not at all an

maybe you misunderstood me or maybe i wrote poorly, but of course the
diacritics fix was intentional. what was NOT intentional, but was a
result of it, from my reading of the various bug reports/forum threads
and my experimentation with the "fixed" version, was the side effects
of the diacritics fix.

they included respecting case, and respecting spaces. when i pointed
this out, andy said it was FUD, not true. turned out it was true. (np
Andy, we all make mistakes! :) ) the spaces issue has since been
REVERTED, intentionally, on purpose, as it always should have been and
was. i don't think a bug for the case issue has ever been filed.

well, that seems to prove my point. i certainly don't begrudge you
your distaste of windows, you're def entitled to it! but the reality
is a huge majority of your customers, well over 50% i'd imagine, "live"
in windows and run server on windows.

that being the case, it only seems sensible to me for your own testing
to start there, to target your main demo. also, it seems like if you
get it working on windows first, its less likely to not work
elsewhere.

this isn't meant as a personal criticism btw, but rather a constructive
critique to help development going forward. i could be all wet, so i'm
just floating it out there respectfully.

i really like the current direction you're taking server, and i'm sure
RC1 will improve, and i'm getting more and more tempted to buy a revue
as a consequence.

personally, i think the devs should do their main testing on windows
machines, and everything else after, since it is undoubtably windows
more than anything else people run server on.

however, the devs don't "live" in windows, and so it always seems to me
that those server versions only get properly looked after when windows
users report back to the devs the problems they find in windows.

jmho, don't bite my head off.

no, it creates problems, as i pointed out regarding the song titles, (as
well as in other ways depending on POV), and show me the bug where the
change was intended?

AndyG made it clear that it was NOT intended, and even went so far as
saying it was FUD to even claim it was happening. the diacritics "fix"
caused the spaces bug, which has since been fixed, and the case issue,
which so far hasn't been addressed. the diacritics fix was never meant
to bleed into those other areas.

yep, and old news, and thank god.

interesting how the diacritic fix keeps having fall out. the case one
is not only unintended, (one would think), but also problematic. its
bad enough to demand strict tag fixing on artist/AA tags, but it also
affects things like song titles, where an "a" and an "A" means when you
follow the song title, you'll get one or the other, not both.

that gives me an idea... Tivo will allow you to save your tivo
recorded stuff to the readynas. if LMS could play those files, i could
just install revues on my various TVs, which would save me a lot of
money as i wouldn't need to install costly tivos on EVERY tv.

will LMS play tivo files on a readynas?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] UPnP/DLNA Server Plugin

2011-09-14 Thread MrSinatra

its a mystery to me as to why the hardware is not yet dlna client
capable, except for the revue. (and its also a mystery why the revue
doesn't support slimproto).

i doubt the ip3k stuff will ever serve as dlna clients, but there is at
least the hope that the newer hardware will one day be so, esp if people
keep asking logitech for it. afterall it is the hardware, not the
software, people buy.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.7 build updates & schedule news

2011-09-10 Thread MrSinatra

i'm actually glad to see a rush to get 7.7 out, and if it works well
with the revue i just might buy one.

i assume that when 7.7 is official, 7.6.x will be over and done, and
will be the last "audio only" version of server, yes? fine by me.

i think its exciting to see an official "do it all" AV server just
around the corner... audio, pics, vids, upnp/dlna all in one free,
opensource server. that will be quite an achievement.

kudos!

Phil, its that kind of thinking that would kill the product. luckily,
they realize this, and will put upnp/dlna into LMS. if well
implemented, that can only be healthy for the product.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Squeezeboxes UPnP/DLNA client ?

2011-09-04 Thread MrSinatra

Erland,

i think we basically agree. if i ran logitech my goal would be the
following:

design a displayless, totally silent (save for some leds u could
disable) "revue 2" which has the server built inside, along with its
"player side." make it slim proto compliant. make it able to power
many clients in snyc and as many other dlna/upnp devices as possible.

make it able to record audio and video, and make it work with
"cablecards." if possible, integrate with a program guide, maybe a
free one?

put some limited onboard storage in, like an 8GB smartcard. let it use
USB 3.0 storage and let it map network location for shared storage.

make it integrate with mysb so a user could watch and listen to their
stuff online via the site, (protecting copyrights via login).

make it a fully "open" android platform, that doesn't need rooted, and
have LMS run on droid. use latest droid OS. add an app that would
update your LMS and via user initiation allow logitech to remotely
troubleshoot it.

call it a dream box. but if one existed, i would pay $300-$400 for it,
maybe more if it was done really well.

i would also NOT put wifi in it, recommend most users to ethernet wire
it to the router. but i would make a usb wifi dongle available, at an
extra price. no remote either, besides a very basic infrared.
encourage cell phones, idevices, or harmonies.

so, what do you think of that? it might sound daunting and dreamlike,
but if logitech doesn't do it, someone else will. the tivo is an
example. the good thing is that you could do it in pieces, and a lot
of it would be updated for you. meaning:

the droid OS would handle lots of it, in a single api. the wifi for
instance. and LMS could be the "player" while a totally different app
could handle the cablecard and recording only. after that, then u
could do the mysb integration. in other words, you wouldn't have to
roll everything out at once.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Squeezeboxes UPnP/DLNA client ?

2011-09-02 Thread MrSinatra

from what i can tell, you want a hardware client that can be used by any
DLNA/upnp server, correct?

so why not get a $99 revue then? or some other dlna client? obviously
logitech has little interest in making their hardware dlna clients,
although i agree its a good idea, and just as crazy, the revue doesn't
support slim proto and one wonders who runs logitech that the revue
wasn't designed from day one to be a slim client.

btw, several years ago i argued that these guys should monitize the
server by selling a small, silent, displayless box that runs a local
server and that they can remotely enter to troubleshoot and update, and
concentrate on only developing that. they could either depricate all
the other flavors or leave the changes and updates to be done by the
community.

i would have paid for such a server box. (u could either connect
storage to it, or map a location[s] for it)

still, having said all that, the server does have HQ audio sound, and i
think a free server that does video and pictures and audio well could
lead to hardware adoptions.

ok, i believe you btw, but its just good to verify its nothing else

what browser are you using? did you clear the browser cache?

your tags look fine to me. so other than the above, i'm out of ideas

well, a few things... mp3tag uses TPE2 to = ALBUMARTIST and has for a
while now.

the SBS default is for TPE2 to = ALBUMARTIST as well.

so, assuming you have mp3/id3 type files, the question is do they have
ALBUMARTIST values at all, and if so, are they the TPE2 kind, or TXXX
ALBUMARTIST kind?

either way, i would set LMS to treat TPE2 as ALBUMARTIST, and not
BAND.

also make sure your group compilations together.

once you properly set your options, checked your tags, cleared your
cache, and did a full clear and rescan, and then restarted LMS, if you
still had a problem then the signs would point to LMS, but a close
examination of your files and tags and stray tag entries would still be
needed.

yeah, as i recall they were to blame for a GD server killing bug i
filed, (or to be more precise, GD's handling of them).

i've used several apps for photo viewing, (like WD, tivo, etc) and they
all seem to basically use filenames and folder location. so for photos,
its seems that the "BMF" method, if you will, is what they expect or try
to get users to do. the better ones allow you to just go to whatever
parent directly you like and start a slideshow.

one thing i am curious about is GPS locations. a lot of phones now tag
pics with the location where you took the pic. i'm not sure if thats
anymore standard than exif tho, or what cool ways LMS could employ to
support it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] UPnP/DLNA Server Plugin

2011-08-28 Thread MrSinatra

the ps3 would be a good one, there's like 55 million of them. it should
work with "normal" dlna/upnp.

there's like 55 million xbox's too, BUT i think its ver of dlna/upnp is
specialized. some sort of extra code on top of it, called media center
extenders or something like that.

still, when you say "XMBC appletv2" are you saying that the 2nd gen
appletv can be powered by XMBC? and what you will do is get XMBC to
browse LMS via upnp, and control it via appletv2?

b/c i think if so, someone might be able to get XMBC to do the same,
only with their xbox... of course, there may be issues with that, as
i'm not sure what gens of xbox xmbc actually works with?

it actually might be the case that if you could hack in xbox 360
support into LMS, you might have the only 3rd party software that
actually works with it, which would certainly get you a ton of
adoptions. i think logitech even sold MCE hardware at some point, so
you could find out what you needed to know via that.

yes, it always has, but before it was one line using a separator
character. now, titles have their own box, track artists have their
own separate one. i like that a lot better.

love the artwork feature, but i agree about the lyrics thing, i never
use that.

but i don't find it sluggish at all. u can turn off artwork lookup if
you want, and much of the rest is the same. for my purposes, i only
have to add RG tags, and i go in and copy the artwork making the 2nd
one called "folder.jpg" so it works with everything, like windows, and
so every album has a unique backup image in case folder.jpg gets hit.

the new EAC has cut down by a lot my "post-rip" processes time.

yeah, i delete all those too. i think EAC always put them there tho.
i would like to be able to deactivate those. (i put the disc number
directly in the album tag, so i don't need disc numbers, but i know you
don't like that either)

yeah, i agree with that too. however, i can resize the columns. i
would think he'll add some config for this in later versions, (i think
he just wanted to implement the grid, which i do like, for now).

CD Artist = Album Artist
CD Performer = the Composer field for all tracks on a cd i believe. i
use that rarely, but for things like "Led Zeppelin cover" its useful.

i use freedb too, but i was just saying that EAC will now do AA tags,
and can even get them from online sources, or user input.

i just hope he keeps developing it. one bug i reported is that with
the new ver, you can't send things into freedb, and i like to do that
if i ever have to enter things manually. (which if you ever have to,
is one place where the grid really shines, in its ability to fill many
fields at once, as well as auto-complete)

not sure what you mean, what things you're referring to? i for one
like it a lot, its much more useful to have access to fields i didn't
before, and esp artwok. it also properly updated its format code for
tags, uses checkboxes, and finally properly splits artists from titles
on comps, meaning in their own boxes, etc...

i have asked him to consider allowing users to toggle on comp=1 tags,
but thats really all thats missing for me. well, that and maybe post
rip soundcheck tagging, for the benefit of apple users. (i don't think
soundcheck has album tags, so it would make sense to add it directly
post rip)

ok, right, i understand now. i haven't tested it, but i would be
mildly surprised if a new virgin install of EAC w/flac wouldn't have
the parameters already set up for AA and composer, if only to keep it
consistent with his new gui. if not, i bet he adds this to be the
default in the next version.

i have four options with mine, one is free 3rd party, (music brainz i
think?) one is the trial deal, and 2 are freedb types. i have also
read that you can hack in gracenote and other stuff, but i haven't
bothered. the two non-freedb ones will do ALL tags.

but the point is that you really don't need to do any special config to
get AA tags, as u can put them in yourself, or use a DB that will. as i
said, FLAC may require some tinkering for the new to EAC tags, or not,
i'm not sure, but not much more than setting up a DB lookup.

i'm not sure what you mean; are you using the latest EAC?

the AA field and composer field are part of the normal GUI, and the
user can fill them in pre-rip. also, as i added later, you can use an
online source that fills them in as well, it doesn't have to be freedb.
i'm not sure freedb works by default either, i think you have to give
your email or something at the very least, and configure it a bit to be
automatic, etc.

in any case, i didn't have to do anything but fill in the fields to get
EAC to add those tags.

Philip Meyer;652002 Wrote:
> Yeah, that's what I mean - there's no consistency in the metadata, so

thats true, assuming the user hasn't edited their tags to be
consistent. but they are great for searches regardless.

Philip Meyer;652002 Wrote:

i have sloppy composer tags, but the "correct" way as in legally
speaking to use the tag would be to credit the songwriters, ie. those
getting the royalty checks. of course that itself can be thorny, since
you can have division between those writing lyrics, and those writing
music.

some of mine are band names, some individuals, some both, some are
incorrect but i use to link to the "main" artist associated with the
song, some use the word "cover" in them to be useful in searches,
etc... but to me, its a great tag for saying "this other entity is
associated with this song."

i can't speak to the 7.5 / 7.6 issue specifically, but it absolutely
seems that differing preferences and styles of browsing, beyond what a
simple toggle switch can accommodate, should be realized. perhaps
specific links like what erland said would be a way to go.

the current version of EAC allows you to set both AA tags and composer
tags PRE-rip. (as well as use them for folder/filename construction)

EDIT: it also allows for use of multiple online DB sources, that do AA,
etc...

well, thats fine for you, but others, like me, use composer tags, and
lots of apps fill them in by default, just like AA tags, such as wmp
and winamp. people can always edit their tags if they don't like what
DB sources fill in.

Philip Meyer;651980 Wrote:

i would rather use standard fields for standard uses, and thats why i
use composer for this. its not perfect i admit, b/c sometimes the orig
artist and the actual song composer are not one and the same, but i'm
not that picky. my main goal is to just link names and artists i want
linked, and this is a great tag to do it with, i use it mainly for
searches. i don't show composers (meaning, i don't tick that box in
the settings) in SBS.

i don't think "illegal" files or bad tags have anything to do with
this.

most "legal" apps put AA tags on everything, and some don't. those
that don't usually use comp tags instead. but i think this points out
an entirely different issue that logitech is studiously avoiding:

SBS works by creating "one master list" of artists. you can not easily
switch between browsing your AA tags and your artist tags, on the fly,
and without switching options and rescanning, etc... its just a PITA.

SBS will assign an AA role to something even if you have no AA tags,
which a lot of users don't understand. and to make things worse, SBS
[potentially] assigns 3 roles for only two tags.

there are SO many issues revolving around this paradigm, its crazy. i
can't think of ANY other software that has a "home>whatever" structure,
or any other software that doesn't let you easily switch on the fly
between browsing artists and album artists, just as an example. SBS is
voodoo, it is arbitrary as pretty much everyone has admitted in this
thread.

in any case Frank, i think erland alluded to a potential solution, one
that sounds good to me.

SBS could provide multiple links where results would be filtered:

contributer
AA
A
Composer

instead of just the one link it does now. but maybe that isn't easy to
do, or takes up too much space, i don't know.

JJZolx;651755 Wrote:
> That may be, but the problem here has little to do with poor tagging.
> It's about the mess that SBS makes of things when a library is tagged
> thoroughly and includes Composer tags.

or other good tags, and i couldn't agree more.

the UI needs an overhaul. the one master list and the home>whatever
paradigm SUCKS. it might work to some degree, and plugins might make
it work a lot closer to how it should be out of the box, but neither is
an excuse to accept and continue the mediocrity of the current
problematic solution. and the evidence of those problems is in
literally endless threads and bugs.

lets make it better!

u got good stats for a non-intel readynas. just fyi, you guys might be

and this dust-up is why you should be able to switch on the fly between
browsing artists, or album artists. it could be easily done in
something like a sort method.

bug 17364 should not be closed, but in fact should be re-opened.

its amazing to me how many bugs are related to comps and various
artists issues. 3rdparty plugins, whitebear, etc...

not only is it high time to fix the VA issues, esp now with onebrowser
in place, but also to rethink the wisdom of having 3 roles for two
tags.

btw, i like the new profile pic but man, SBS sure has done a number on

thats an interesting point... in winamp, you can initiate a rescan,
and while its going on, you can still make tag edits/updates via the ML
(idx DB), and they will persist regardless of if the files are in front
of, or behind, the present "location" of the rescan at that moment.

i'll have to ask them how they do that, but i always guessed that a
scan worked in a temp area until completed, then after that merged in
any changes that occured after the scan started, then only when that
completed did it replace the current "working" DB.

well it does make sense to prioritize the consumer OS's over other
ones. however, my priority would be on getting LMS or at least a
tinyLMS into the revue. a standalone product like this for $99 is
pretty sweet.

exactly my point! the slim paradigm is outdated and dead. ipods are
self contained. the revue could be the home entertainment center ipod.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Lms?

2011-08-11 Thread MrSinatra

great breakdown, thx. just fyi, everything i read says 4.0 is for ALL
android devices, ie. form factors. the rush behind it is so that
developers have one api to develop for, that works on all form
factors.

restricting the marketplace from the revue is one good reason its
failed so far! how stupid is that??? i hope you're right a new
firmware gets an uncensored market.

also, i wonder if SP-droid app will work or be included in the next
update?

if they put a tiny LMS in the revue, that would be a pretty killer
product. finally a self contained solution!

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Lms?

2011-08-11 Thread MrSinatra

i'm somewhat confused...

won't the revue get the 4.0 android update? thats supposed to come out
very soon:

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/08/09/google_rushing_out_android_4_ice_cream_sandwich_to_counter_iphone_5.html

seems silly to put the revue on 3.x as 4.x comes out.

also, can you DL apps to the revue? if so, doesn't the SP / droid app
work with LMS? why do you need upnp / dlna in that scenario? or is
that just for videos and pictures?

a $99 droid tv box that works with a multimedia SBS server is VERY
interesting and compelling to me! i hope you guys work out the kinks.

and one last thing: i'd love to see SBS/LMS RUN ON the revue itself!
ie. become self contained. seems to me if the touch can do it...

i am sorry to hear this. its really too bad, but i can only assume
that decreased revenue is forcing decreased resources and some serious
introspection at logitech, and i think thats long overdue. hopefully
the management will listen to the marketplace, and stop daydreaming.

can you please clarify though, is it just you and Michael for SBS
7.6.x, or just you two for *both* SBS 7.6.x AND 7.7/LMS?

is the main goal/priority right now to get LMS done to support the

thats the rub, the album can only be listed once.

i don't think the devs want to write in more specific case handling
code for this, where it does some kind of A-Z comparison, and really,
that wouldn't solve the issue i just mentioned, b/c a user wouldn't
know that logic was in the server. there's enough weird logic as is!

this is why, or so i think, M Herger was agreeing with me that the
easiest way to address the issue would be for the user to assign an AA.
i understand you don't want to, and i respect that, and you certainly
don't have to. but i just don't see the reason NOT to?

as to physical CDs, i have a display / storage rack i built myself,
wooden and bolted to the wall. i put stuff on that in loose genre
based locations, and i rarely go looking for a CD, so i didn't put any
thought into it really. not sure there's a good answer to that.

the way i tag, i just do one AA tag and one A tag. simple, easy. but
the album i thought of, was:

Appalachian Journey

where the A on each track would be:

Alison Krauss, Yo-Yo-Ma, Mark O'Connor, Edgar Meyer, James Taylor

so i just decided to use this for AA b/c this is where/how i CHOOSE to
sort it:

Alison Krauss, Yo-Yo-Ma, James Taylor

another similar album is one that Phil M and I have, of Pink Floyd
covers, but i use an AA of "Pink Floyd tribute" on that.

ANYWAY...

assuming a "normal" casual user would have multiple artist frames and
no AA tags, (questionable how often that happens in the wild imo, but
hypothetically), i think they would wonder why their album only shows
up under Mark O'Connor. or worse, why ISN'T it under the first artist
they think to look under it for? see what i mean?

i understand, and presumably that would still occur with an AA tag
present as well.

but i'm asking a different question. under home>albums, sorted by
artist, (like as in "artist, year, album") your album would only show
up once, under one of the artists.

so, knowing that, i ask again:

my question to Phil L is, does he care where the album shows up? and
wouldn't it be better to force it via AA tag, as I and M Herger
suggest, then have it be more or less random between multiple tags?

i don't know why you say that, since from what i can tell, Phil M and I
seem to agree on this issue?

again, i want to see the bug resolved for Phil L situations. i just
think that its a valid concern to mention that these types of albums
only show up once in home>albums, and since most people don't know the
order of the tags in their tags, its random as to which tag will "win"
out for sorting purposes.

my question to Phil L is, does he care where the album shows up? and
wouldn't it be better to force it via AA tag, as I and M Herger
suggest, then have it be more or less random between multiple tags?

right... i hope Michael does fix this bug btw, i'm not trying to
interfere with that, i get that the list in that other area is
truncated in 7.6, but what Phil M says re: home>albums is what i
thought the truth was.

the only point i'd make, is that assigning an AA tag would take the
randomness out of it. this is what i was saying earlier, which M

thats the point. SBS DOES that already, and according to jim, what it
does is for sorting purposes, and it just picks whichever is first in

i don't think so. your 5 examples, (and excellent work btw!), don't
cover Phil Leigh's example here.

his example is an album that:

has no AA
has multiple artists per track
has a comp = 0 tag

interestingly, i'm not sure the comp=0 tag is even needed, b/c while
all his tracks have more than one artist listed, they are the SAME
multiple artists on every track on the album. so i don't know if SBS
would detect that as a VA album or not?

Phil Leigh;644158 Wrote:
> in my example, there are two ARTISTs: Mark and Emmylou. Therefore (as

not for sorting. the album will only be there once, so who is it
under? thats what i'm asking Jim basically.

JJZolx;644160 Wrote:
> The artist selected for sorting purposes (albums.contributor) would
> appear to be the first one in the tags.

fair enough. but my more basic point is WHY that one? why not the
other one? (and obviously, if it were the other one, not not the first
one?) i mean, as an end result, it feels wrong somehow for the album to
be listed twice, but it also feels wrong to be listed only once under
only one of the artists, if you see what i mean? (in home>albums)

JJZolx;644160 Wrote:

right, i think i'm following all that...

right, i get that too. i do think using separator characters or
multiple frames for artists is itself unusual, but certainly not
verbotten or unwise... i guess though that i don't see why using an AA
tag for this situation is not the best solution? the album is only
going to be listed once no matter what, and its really not a Mark or
Emmy album, but both of theirs, so it should be its own unique value.

and that wouldn't stop it from being found under each of them as
artists either, since they would be listed in their own artist frames.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Bug NOT fixed (only showing one artist or composer as artist...)

2011-07-27 Thread MrSinatra

ok, and again i think i follow you and that sounds correct...

(i am assuming that the albums.contributor table is where AA tags get
written to, and / or where SBS writes a value of "Various Artists" if
it detects a comp, and / or where it writes the artist tag values if
all tracks share the same artist value, yes?)

but thats also the rub!

how does it determine which of the two to use in our problematic
example?

in other words, where would i find the album, and the obvious question
is why one place/artist and not the other one? (and vice versa)

since the album can only be listed once (in home>albums) it sounds like
you're saying its basically going to be random as to which artist it
shows up under, (at least from the avg user POV, assuming any avg users
tag this way), and this is why, personally speaking, i'd rather just
assign an AA tag and take the guesswork out of it.

am i off base here? or is that a correct summation?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Bug NOT fixed (only showing one artist or composer as artist...)

2011-07-27 Thread MrSinatra

interesting.

you have an album with no defined AA but multiple artists on each track
but not a comp.

so what should SBS use for its AA field since it will ALWAYS put
something?

it could list the same album twice, (meaning, each artist becomes a
single AA), but that seems unwieldy.

perhaps the AA should be some kind of X + Y result, so the AA above
would be:

Roadrunner by Mark Knopfler & Emmy Lou Harris

where Mark is X and Emmy is Y but the two together with the & to join
them (and others if present) becomes the single AA.

all the more reason tho imo, to assign an AA in the tag to begin with.

wow, what a MESS.

this is why you should have one DB field for one tag, and thats it.
and comp tags shouldn't be this impactful. all they should do is
classify or further clarify comp status to SBS, but the two roles in
the DB for AA and TA should not be impacted by them.

this has been coming to a head for a long time now.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] SBS 7.6 - bug 17340 query

2011-07-27 Thread MrSinatra

just speaking theoretically...

if the AA tag is useless and redundant in most cases, then what harm is
there in applying a AA tag value to everything you have?

SBS assigns an AA value whether you have an AA tag or not. so why
wouldn't "best practices" of tagging be to have both AA tags and A tags
on everything you scan? eliminate all guesswork? take an occassionally
unpredictable variable out of the equation?

i found, long ago, that was in fact, the best way to do it to get a
similar exp across all apps, including SBS. what exactly is the
downside, other than redundancy?

one can still add comp tags of either type if desired/necessary. so i
just don't see why there is resistence to adding AA tags?

you devs and your delicate sensibilities.

not to mention, i am the only one speaking positively of the decision,
however backhandedly, its sincere nonetheless for the reasons i stated.

interesting to me that my comments are focused on, not all the other
purely negative ones.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 is being released???

2011-07-26 Thread MrSinatra

i, proudly, have absolutely nothing to do with twits.

(in fairness, for years i stayed off facebook as well, until it became
impossible to do so if you wanted to see photos and so on, but i think
i'll never need to twit)

surely logitech has logitech mail servers they could migrate the old
lists to? seems like an obvious thing to do and a needlessly wasted
resource.
