SBC controlling Receiver playing of local library. Rebooting the SBC helps, but it seems to quickly reappear. Try playing an album w. several tracks. Then do a mixture of: track changes, ffw, volume changes, insert/delete from playlist. Do it from the SBC as well as from SBS while the SBC is on the Now Playing screen (so should update accordingly). Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Proposal: swap "Now Playing" and "Music" on SBC
I don't agree with that bug-report. I don't think its a good idea to have a general user-configuration system. Perhaps some corner could be addressed that way, but not in general. I can't really argue my case, but it's related to: -the fact that the simplistic basic/advanced/expert-user model is known to have many weaknesses. E.g. even expert users over time grow tired of tracking configurations. -it becomes more difficult to add any intelligence (as it must account for all user-behaviours) -such systems inevitably adds complexity to the code-base and can be hard to maintain in a consistent manner. Anyway, perhaps I'll do a separate bug report. Mnyb;458829 Wrote: > What would make most sense would be settings to re arrange the order of > things in all menu's . But especially Home menu. > Could perhaps work. I have my reservations though. Mostly just because of the, albeit rather trivial, added complexity. How does one choose a good ordering? What does the wife/family-members say when things aren't where they used to be? Its benign I know, but I don't know if the yield is worth it. > > On the topic now playing has a hard button yes but for a new user or > anyone else, is it really that clear what that symbol is ? that button > toggles it function it is home or nowplaying or off/on . > Yes, but the menu is fully included in the button functionality since the only place the menu can be used is from the home-menu, from which the button does exactly the same. I don't know about the symbol though. I don't think the total learning threshold would be bad though. Its not only about "how to find the button" in the first place. Its also a balance between things such as insentiment, frequency, necessity etc. Take the iPod touch. It only has a single button with a square on. Its not at all obvious from the symbol alone that this is the main-menu button. Still I have not heard any complains about it. I should add that my post was inspired by the Touch-interface that has, not a hard button, but a dedicated on-screen button and no Now Playing menu. > > I kinda like it as it is... [SlimDevices: Beta] Proposal: swap "Now Playing" and "Music" on SBC
as subj indicates I think this would "Now Playing" the first list item, and the rationale is: -Due to the "resistance", the endpoints are easier to hit. -I assume that for a large part of the users the "Music" entry is a main entrance to ones library, and therefore very often accessed. -There is a hard-button shortcut to the "Now Playing" screen. For similar reasons I also suggest using the end of the root menu list for something more commonly accessed than Settings. Personally I suggest, in decreasing order of importance: -Favorites -Turn of player (this could come at almost no cost since they are currently the 2. respectively 3. last entry anyway). [SlimDevices: Beta] Squeezeplay via. SSH tunnels
Hi I know this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find those threads now, so I'm starting a new one. Basically I would really like if (desktop) SqueezePlay could connect to SqueezeCenter via ssh-tunnels. For Linux (and Mac?) users this is a fully secure, straight forward way to connect remotely to a ssh-capable Squeezeboxserver. Windows users can easily do the same by installing the free ssh-client, Putty. I've tried forwarding (tunneling) tcp-ports 9000 and 3483 and connecting with SqueezePlay. No joy. AFAIR from the old threads the problem was that SqueezePlay broadcasts discovery packages over UDP/3483. This can not be forwarded over ssh-tunnels, and Squeezeplay couldn't do without. I also found this old bugreport: https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8800 but it seems a bit unclear what exactly it is about. So. Any input on this. pippin;457572 Wrote: > I can assure you that you are kind of special in that respect. > _I_ might do that after I tried the obvious stuff > My mother, my GF, ... will never ever look into "Settings". In conclusion; it depends on the user (type). But I'm convinced that having it at the root is *not* a good solution. The question is where to place it. I think one should include more context into the considiration. What mechanisms (should) ensure users discover it in the first place? a. They enjoy spending their evenings browsing the shiny SBC-menu structure. b. They know from (viral) marketing etc, that they can get a service/functionality, e.g. rhapsody, last.fm, facebook, flickr. I think b. is the starting correct answer. So one can assume that there is some incentive to find out *HOW*. The UI-design task is then to make it fairly obvious how to find it. Hi, please get rid of the animation used when the volume/ffw/rew-popup disappears. -Its completely unnessecary, i.e. doesn't provide any information to the user. -Its only purpose is to look nice, but its just to choppy to achieve this goal. -IMO it in fact makes the SBC appear slow/overloaded. There was a bug some time ago where it was argued that users would think that things were faster if just the gui elements moved faster and vice versa. Just let it disappear the same way it appears. If you want to be really fancy, make it a fade-out animation. On the positive side I'm glad the play/pause-popup is gone. The GUI is quite attractive now, but I suggest honoring the fact that the graphics isn't accelerated, so its never gonna look like an iThingy. Just keep it nice and simple. [SlimDevices: Beta] Bug: jive_7.4_r5226 browser state inconsistency
Hi, could someone verify that this is a bug. To reproduce: 0. Use standard playlist settings. I.e. basically default. 1. Use said firmware version and set the "Now Playing" screensaver. 2. Browse to somewhere in the artist/album hierarchy with a listing of more than one album, and start playing by pressing Play on any album. 3. Wait for the screensaver to kick in. 4. Press the middle button. (You should now be in the "Now Playing" playlist.) 5. Press back once. (or maybe its twice. you should stop when you're back at the screen where you where before the screensaver kicked in) 6. Now scroll to some other album (recall pt. 3) and press middle button. 7. Nothing happens for me at this point, while the correct thing is to enter the album listing I clicked on. This is an exact sequence. There are other ways to reproduce also. The point is that the browser state seems to get messed up if I from the Now Playing screensaver press the middle button, and then the back button again. I think the bug came up approximately when the persistent browser state was implemented. [SlimDevices: Beta] Bug: 7.4-26210 scanner splits albums?
Hi, could someone verify whether this is a bug. To reproduce: 1. Move an entire album, organised by directory, to somewhere else in the SC-library path. 2. Rescan by looking for new and changed music. For me this results in the album being split into individual tracks under the "New Music" listing. If I first remove the album, rescan, and add it again everything works. This is really important for you future. I follow some of the Norweigan and Danish audio-forums more or less closely. And there are frequent posts dealing with Squeezebox, primarily Duet, problems. I know people don't post success-stories that often. And I do not have any kind of quantitative measures on the nature of these posts, so while I am convinced that the following is true, it is admittedly speculative. I thing that the relatively large number of negative posts significantly contributes to creating a negative image of the products. I'd say that on the forums that I follow (which are the main forums in DK/NO), it is (still) accepted as true, that e.g. Sonos (but also other streamers) just works, and Squeezebox is for the nerds and hackers who are willing to spend time fixing things. I know this is not news, and that SD has been able to maintain its market position up to now. But I think the marked is very different today and things must improve in order to keep up. I am a huge fan of the Squeeze* products and often post if I see wrong (negative) information and try to help out as best I can. But in far too many cases the problems seems recurring and/or caused by seemingly "well-known" bugs. A class of problems are controller connectivity issues. I always leave my server on and never experience issues. But many do not and also report lots of problems. My server or network occasionally crashes, and most of the time everything comes up fine again. But sometimes I experience strange reconnectivity-issues. The behaviour in such cases appears rather random and appears not very well handled by SC/Squeeze. To me this is one of several examples that indicate that the problems people are having are very real. I guess the main point is that unexpected/weird/wrong things happen all the time, and SC must handle such scenarios (better). User initiated debugging/adjustements, even small and trivial ones, etc. may alleviate the problems, but that's just good enough for most. People expect and want it to work as reliably as other devices that they percieve as having the same complexity. E.g. if their PS3 can connect flawlessly, the Squeeze* should. Or if streaming to device X on the LAN works flawlessly, so should the Squeeze*. And so on. Anyway, you might or might not have better data on this than I do. These where just some thoughts. -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62405 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

I see no reason not to improve SC in this area for those that do not feel like doing it manually or do not have the knowledge or time (personally I do some photography and spend enough time as it is in raw-editors and the Gimp etc.). I do think that if done it should be optional. Especially for those who use external means of providing high-quality artwork should not be subject to SC potentially messing up their art. Edit: But really, the improvement part is far ahead. More realistically I would like to see improvements in the way SC presents whatever quality art the user provides cf. my previous post. -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61900 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

I forgot to mention another quirk. Currently eg. the album view includes all text in even very long artist/album titles. This creates huge blank areas. In such cases the text should be elliptisised (is that what it is called) and the full text shown on mouse-hover. These are small things, but the idea is that instead of "starting from scratch" with a new interface the present once should be polished and optimised. -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61900 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] More colours to the Default skin good/bad ?
I don't think the default skin looks bad overall. But I've been meaning to file an enhancement request for a while, and this seems like a good opportunity to air it. Of course the interface could look better. How? I propose to let one particular feature bring the bling/liveliness to the interface. Namely the way *covers* are displayed. They already bring color and variation to the interface and are an integrated part of it. But there is some room for optimising their visual presentation in SC. I suggest to let SC do some image manipulation when scanning covers. This should be one or more of: -Add small dropshadow (Other possiblilties could be to add some other kind of frame/border. Eg. last.fm frames covers in jewel-cases.) -Normalise colors -Add reflection to the image. -Preferably give all images the same aspect-ratio and size (more below). I once tried to add a small dropshadow and it *really* improves the overall look of the interface. Unfortunately I forgot to grab a screenshot... I reverted because it needs to be done more cleverly, ie dropshadow does not look nice on the Controller full-screen display, or on the popup appearing when hovering the cover in the now playing section of the SC-interface. I'm convinced that this would be a very nice way of improving the look. Its a subtle change, but the effect is very noticeable. Currently there are a few visual problems with the covers which in some cases makes the interface look home-made: - As SC uses no standardised location to source covers from there is potential for deviations in quality, colors, size, aspect-ratio etc. This looks bad. - Sometimes covers have white, or some other kind of border. Again bad. - In general the varying image quality is a problem. What do you think. Worth filing a request? [SlimDevices: Beta] Fullscreen artwork should have a small border
Hi, the new fullscreen artwork stuff is nice and probably a nice welcome as per earlier forum requests. However I'd like to see a few pixels border added. The screen now appears ill proportioned as if the cover image has been shoehorned into the available space. I think the reason for this is that it is wider than the rounded status/track info box which to me defines the available space; no real content should be wider than that. I've attached a screenshot and I think the width should be the same as the width of said box. +---+ |Filename: jive0002.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=6234| +---+ -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55053 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/beta

[SlimDevices: Beta] Cannot update SBC from r2649
Hi, My SBC seem to be stuck at jive-7.1r2649. I can't downgrade, nor update from the net or SD card. Pressing the middle button on either of these choices only triggers the sound effect, but nothing else happens. I tried resetting both using menu and through key combination. This did not reset the firmware version which in fact remained at r2649. Nor did it solve the upgrade problem above. So I'd appreciate help on how I can solve this problem. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.1 - New JS code for Default skin - SqueezeJS
Hello (especially mherger), there was a discussion earlier in this thread about remembering the size of the lhs/rhs thru page reloads. AFAIR the required changes where not trivial nor high-priority. But what about changing the default so that the lhs is allocated maximum/most width upon initial loading? I can not at all argue why, but I'm pretty convinced that the majority would prefer this to the current equal-width default. If it is an easy change, why not give it a try in the nightly builds and see what reaction you get? Or do other already want to object? [SlimDevices: Beta] Volume not synching between SC7.1 and SBC
Hi, The visual indicators for volume does not synch properly between the SBC and SC. The synch seems to happen on track changes. Apart from the general inconvenience this could be a real issue for those running direct to amp. I was able to trig an upwards jump in volume once, so even though it doesn't happen every time, it doesn't seem like the code guarantees that this never can occur. That said, the stability of unstable trunk builds can vary across projects and companies, and historically the unstable SC builds have been very polished for long period of times. So I can see why that can lead people into expecting unstable to work. If one follows unstables on a daily basis, at some point, perhaps after months or even years, things will most likely break bigtime, e.g. when the major changes are commited. Therefore I think it is highly recomendable to follow dev- and commit-mailinglists when using trunks. Anyway, just my 2c. Did this offer you the option of configuring a static ip ? If not this probably means that the menu for configuring a static ip is only shown after the router has been discovered. Here's an idea which may of may not work in this scenario. The idea is to let the SBC discover the router but shut down the router before the SBC manages to obtain an ip via the router's dhcp-server, thus fooling it to think that there is no dhcp server on the network and consequently give you the option of configuring a static ip. So you could try this. Figure out which address range the dhcp server on your router allocates from. Most likely something like 192.168.*.* or 10.0.*.*. Factory reset the SBC and reboot. Now you should let the SBC discover your router, but shut down the router before it gets an ip. You'll probably have to guess when this is. Or do it while the SBC show the "Obtaining ip" popup. Just try a few times with different shutdown times. Now hopefully you should hit the right time, and the SBC should tell you that it could not obtain an ip and give you the option of configuring a static ip. Give it an ip in the range NOT used by the dhcp-server as per above. Turn your router back on and either continue booting the SBC, or reboot it. OK, its a bit of a long story, but it should work if the implementation is fairly standard. -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45474 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/beta

I would suggest truncating in that view since the detailed info can be seen in album details. This can also be a problem with e.g. classical music which often have long artist/title string. Hi, Is it possible to add art, e.g. logos to radio station? I guess it is, because the antenna thing is already there. But could an interface be exposed to the user? If not I think it would be a nice addition to the graphical improvements in SC7, and I imagine also on that Jive thing. Should/could I file an enhancement request in the bugtracking system.
