Yeah, having been in the software industry for over 20 years, I've
heard the term once or twice..

Somehow you must think I care about the release candidate. I do not. I
only posted wanting some news about 7.5.4 which WAS a PENDING release
(posted at the TOP of every forum) - and then disappeared.

Well, Mickey posted a sticky at the top of every page about the
upcoming 7.5.4 release. The firmware to support it started propagating
to certain devices. And then it was gone.

I don't care about BUILDS, but when Logitech trumpets a pending RELEASE

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Any WHS Vail support planned ?

2010-06-15 Thread gcurrie

Yes, it appears there will be no upgrade from WHS v1 to Vail. So many
aspects are different - the Drive Extender technology is vastly
different, the add-in architecture is completely revamped. Anyone
wanting to go from 1 to 2 will need to do a complete reinstall.

Bob Muglia (VP of MS Server and Tools) said last week that WHS v2 would
be shipping this year. I've heard rumors of August RTM.

Vail uses an entirely new add-in architecture. No current add-ins will
work, period.

A new SDK just got released this week. It'll be at least a month before
anyone's add-ins are ported over. I can't imagine Logitech is going to
want to put any development effort into porting their add-in over until
a Vail release date is announced.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] WHS 7.5 persistant update failure

2010-02-19 Thread gcurrie

Something I noticed is that the auto-download seems to be triggered
based on the last time I updated. So if I updated at 4 pm (local time),
then the next download seems to happen at 4 pm.

Your log entry:
10-01-12 20:13:18.6821] Slim::Utils::Firmware::downloadAsyncError (557)
Warning: Firmware: Failed to download
http://update.mysqueezebox.com/updat...0/jive.version (404 Not Found),

[10-01-12 20:15:09.3709]
Slim::Networking::SqueezeNetwork::Stats::_reportSt ats_error (218) Stats
reporting failed: Timed out waiting for data

seems to indicate that your server can't find the web site. Suggests a
DNS problem.

Are you able to do a Windows Update from the server? Have you
configured Remote Access yet? (This will ensure the proper ports are
opened.)

Even though the Console is the recommended method for logging in to the
server, for troubleshooting I find Remote Desktop better (if you haven't
tried it yet).

That's all I can think of right now.

2010-02-15 Thread gcurrie

Themis, you are correct. The WHS add-in does NOT auto-update, but it
auto-downloads and alerts there is a new version.

I don't think I've seen any third party add-ins that actually
auto-update. The WHS, being server software, is architected to require
uninstall and reinstall rather than in-place update (although I wish it
were otherwise).

I *think* the OP was referring to no longer getting the new version
auto-downloaded with the accompanying Taskbar alerts.

Ralph-

My WHS (HP MediaSmart) is auto-updating fine with 7.5.

Last weekend there was a firmware problem, but not in January when you
posted this.

In the web UI, go to Advanced > Software Updates to make sure Check for
software updates AND Automatic download are both enabled. (Note that
there is no equivalent in the Squeezebox Server settings tab in WHS.)

Other than that, it might be some obscure setting of your WHS.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] r8474 - Controller can't connect to servers anymore

2010-02-13 Thread gcurrie

Not sure of the timeline for a fixed Controller (jive) firmware.

I ended up downgrading to 7.4 (r7790). I also took the liberty of
editing the wiki (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.ph...te_via_SD_Card)
to reflect 7.4 instead of 7.3.

Note that you will have to delete the jive .bin file from cache\updates
AND edit the jive.version file to reflect the current firmware (r7790)
or else you will be prompted constantly to download a nonexistent
firmware update.

Finally, you'll need to stop/start the server and reboot the Controller
to get everything out of RAM.

Triode1 - hope you see this. I went to reproduce/document it and enter

did).

Afterwards, upon selecting the controller as player and going to select
a wallpaper, I noticed all the custom wallpapers were there.

It seems to work exactly as advertised now. I don't know if a
dependency got fixed or if it was merely the refreshing of new firmware.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 Desktop Squeezeplay builds with Radio/Touch/new Controller UI now available

2009-11-04 Thread gcurrie

Well, on step 3: When I first tried it a month or so ago, it did not
work. I was using 7.4 SBS and the Squeezeplayer that was on the 7.4
nightly page just before release.

I think I played around with switching the player between the SP and
other players (Settings > Choose Player) before trying to connect to
mysb.com and somehow it suddenly worked.

I have been using the SP from the nightly 7.41 before it was released
and it is (for me) very reliable on switching between SBS and mysb.com.

I wish I knew exactly what I might have done. I guess I just kept
trying things and something clicked.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 Desktop Squeezeplay builds with Radio/Touch/new Controller UI now available

2009-11-03 Thread gcurrie

1. Open and sign in to mysqueezebox.com.
2. Open a Squeezeplayer.
3. Settings > Advanced > Networking > Connect to mysqueezenetwork.com
4. On mysb.com, click on Players. Your player should show up now.
5. Your player will show a version like 7.4-r0 if you are running on
Windows - apparently they haven't implemented version display on
Windows(?)
6. While it is connected, you can rename the player, adjust settings.
Some of this seems to actually work.
7. All this time, your player is not connected to SBS and there is no
way to get back from the menu of the player. However, if you click
Disconnect on mysb.com/Players, your Squeezeplayer will return to
connection with SBS - with any changes you made while connected to
mysb.com.

On 7.4.1, I got all 5 SPs properly registered on mysqueezebox.com (lots
of deleting players and reconnecting) and My Apps show up properly on
each player.

Going to 7.4.2 hasn't broken it yet (although it broke a few other
little items).

It seems to me that 7.4.2 is a developmental cul-de-sac. I'm trying to
determine why the Customize Controller plugin broke as soon as I updated
to 7.4.2 - but not if 7.4.2 is obsolete.

Is there any reason to evaluate the 7.4.2 instead of 7.5? I'm hearing

also.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 Desktop Squeezeplay builds with Radio/Touch/new Controller UI now available

Settings seem to be saved properly now - excellent!

As far as syncing, are other people getting audio output from
Squeezeplay when it is synced to another player? I'm wondering if my
results are unusual.

I can sync from my desktop SP app to my Receiver. When I start playing
a song on the Receiver, the Now Playing display on the desktop SP shows
the current album and song, with the time slider advancing. But no audio
output from the SP, even as I listen to the Reciever playing
downstairs.

Is there a setting in the SP, or in SBS somewhere I need to enable?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 Desktop Squeezeplay builds with Radio/Touch/new Controller UI now available

2009-10-15 Thread gcurrie

For your specific desire to SYNC the Squeezebox and Squeezeplayer, maybe
a 7.3x version of both would do (don't know where to find them, but
someone should post a link shortly).

The 7.4+ builds of Squeezeplay have been broken when synchronizing -
the result is no audio output. I can play music from my Receiver, and
music from my Squeezeplay app, but as soon as I sync them I get no audio
from Squeezeplay until I exit the app. (The IU indcates that the music
IS synced correctly - but there is no audio.)

I don't currently care about sync between software players and hardware
(more interested in sync between hardware players) so it's not a
deal-breaker for me.

Maybe it has been fixed in a recent build???

Note that you might have to use a different port number - my WHS box

I noticed that certain builds of the betas would not automatically
start, whereas most did. Occasionally I had to start it by hand.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 Desktop Squeezeplay builds with Radio/Touch/new Controller UI now available

2009-10-01 Thread gcurrie

I have SqueezePlay 7.4 installed on six PCs, and now that I've learned
how to connect to my SBS (choose other player, then choose this player)
AND properly persist settings (rename all lua.new files to lua) things
are going pretty well.

Of course, I am unable to connect with MySb to 'register' the players.

It's a cool way to distribute my music into even more locations. Even
though I plan on Receivers in three rooms and maybe a Boom for
kitchen/deck, it is nice to use the same interface to access my music
and internet radio on whatever computer I am using.

I know bklass said that not much time was going into Squeezeplay
currently. Any insight into when and if it might be brought up to speed
with the controller codebases? I imagine not much will be done until the
Touch launches...

a - yes, the installer does not update. It would be nice if it
uninstalled and reinstalled the new in one step. Don't know how possible
this is, but it would probably involve stopping the SC server - likely
too much work right now.

b- IIRC, there is a setting in some preferences file for how often it
looks for a new version and downloads it. I think it's 12 hours by
default. So it won't even look for another build for 12 hours after
you've installed the last one.

c - I found it worked best for me to reserve a fixed IP for my WHS (and
thus for any process running on it). If you are using DHCP from your
router, you probably can reserve the current IP for your WHS. This gives
you the same result (at least internally) as having a static IP. Most of
my connection issues went away once I did this.

Although my WHS install is working fine, I noticed that the path above
has a typo:

userdate should be userdata.

FYI, the key on my system is b25099274a2072641.

I notice there is also a reference in the HKCR tree with an

just a key insertion?

It's just a one-time glitch - annoying and alarming, but shouldn't

You have no choice. You need to uninstall before installing a new

SBS is a running process.

I haven't yet seen a WHS add-in that doesn't require uninstalling

You have the new beta that uses test.squeezenetwork.com, which is a new
site entirely.

Your old mysqueezebox.com account is still active, but you cannot
access it with the current beta. You need a new account. It will log you
in to the "new" mysqueezebox.com.

There is a long thread on this:

remember seeing anything like that when I created a new account.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Activation and "notnat" (WHS 7.4)

2009-08-24 Thread gcurrie

If by recently you mean in the last two weeks, then the "beta" has been
repointed to test.squeezenetwork.com instead of www.squeezenetwork.com.

You need to create a new account on test.squeezenetwork.com. I used the
same username and password to make it easy once they point the beta back
to the production server.

So creating new accounts on www.squeezenetwork.com doesn't work since
the beta doesn't look there.

If you have a version earlier than the high 27??? (don't remember the
exact numbers) then this doesn't apply. Today's build is 28249.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4-r28249 is terrible

2009-08-24 Thread gcurrie

I haven't noticed anything significant one way or another with 28249.
I'm also using it on WHS (HP EX485). I don't use Windows Media Connect
so I don't know if it is even running.

No problems here playing songs without stutters, and I'm using wireless
with my Receiver.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Whs7.4 and remote - update problems

2009-08-22 Thread gcurrie

I don't think this has anything to do with the specific build for WHS.

It is the new controller firmware, quite a few people have hit snags
trying to update. It's not stable at all.

The update is triggered by going to a certain SC build or later.

You'll see a lot of people posting exactly your experience here.

1. I am seeing longer lags in the auto-downloading of the nightlies.
Maybe something changed in the code. Might want to file a bug.

2. I am running on 9001 and my Controller has no problem. The first new
formware update was pretty rough, though - had a hard time finding
anything for awhile.

3. I don't know if they are linked, but I suspect not.

Current version today is 28235. What are you running?

Hmm... all my stuff showed up there automagically when I recreated my

You're talking about http://test.squeezenetwork.com/player/viewPlayers
- correct?

In 20+ years of working in commercial software, beta has typically
meant feature complete. Alpha means key functions exist yet some
features are broken/incomplete or missing.

Both the 7.4 server and the Controller firmware have features missing
or broken. They are clearly being fixed - but it's not quite beta yet
(if you agree with the stipulation of feature complete for beta).

Beta != 'has bugs.' ALL software of non-trivial complexity has
non-trivial bugs. Even shipping software!

I remember 'beta' testing some software years ago. The external beta
group found that there were so many key features missing or broken that
it did not meet our expectations for a beta, and was not worth it to
spend more time stumbling over gaping holes in the product than actually
finding bugs. The company pulled the beta until they could provide a
nominally stable and feature complete beta.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Sync in recent 7.4

2009-08-16 Thread gcurrie

Using 28189 (and 7084 on the Controller) on WHS. Sync is pretty much
useless right now.

Even plain FLAC playback (normally solid) is displaying dropouts with
no other network activity occuring.

I created a 'new' account with the same credentials at
test.squeezenetwork.com to get it to work. I assumed there would be some
sort of migration happening from the production server.

I don't use mysqueezenetwork so it was a PITA to figure out.

There are so many moving parts to this system in my case - SB Receiver,
SB controller, SBS on Windows Home Server, mysqueezenetwork - that I'm
somewhat regretting installing the "beta" (seems more like an alpha to
me). However, since the beta is the only one with a WHS installer, I'm
hoping it becomes stable soon.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] New look Duet r7084 firmware coming; you must use latest 7.4 SqueezeCenter

2009-08-16 Thread gcurrie

On SBS r28189 installed on WHS. Receiver is firmware 65. Trying to
update controller to 7084, the process repeatedly got stuck at
'connecting to mysqueezenetwork'. Sometimes it would lose the network
(despite being 5 feet from the AP at ~ 80% signal). After re-entering
user/pw over and over without success, I got the bright idea to go to
test.squeezenetwork.com and create my exact same account manually.
Voila! working.

Are existing accounts supposed to be migrated from www to test? IF so,
it's not working reliably. If not, you might want to remind everyone to
re-create their accounts.

That is correct. Any Add-in must be uninstalled first. Makes sense when
you realize that it is usually a running service. It would be nice if
there was a supported way to stop the service, run an install to
*update* bits, and then restart the service... maybe I'll post that
suggestion on MS Connect.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] SC 7.4 for WHS Thread

2009-08-07 Thread gcurrie

I've been running 7.4 for more than a month, currently at r27885.

I stopped there since I knew my Duet was coming this week and I wanted
some stability for a party this weekend.

Setting up yesterday was fairly simple and I was able to get wireless
going right away with only a few little speedbumps. Main floor audio
system is in a closet 10 feet away from the network closet so wifi
signal is strong.

So far it's dialed in and I'm looking forward to streaming 4 hours of
FLACs tomorrow.

If this works well, I'm buying another receiver for the
theater/listening room - and that one will be wired.

Nice thing about the WHS is that it tends to bypass a lot of the issues
that many seem to have. Running a media server is second nature.
