Sure - You could use Hi-Res instead of SACD or DVD-A. You can't rip
SACD in hi-res though (like you can with DVD-A).

There are some news in this area, yes, it is more complex to rip SACD

Well, as scanner is batch process running at night, I do not really
care if it takes 5 minutes or 30 minutes to rescan the files.

Regarding SQLite - I realized that this is more applicable to NAS
users, where SqueezeCenter is embedded there, right?

I personally would like to see more Search and Category-based
selection.
Like, I have DVD-Audio, SACD, LP titles, on the other hand I have
Blues, Jazz, etc. I just cannot that simple find them, Advanced Search
is really a bit stupid (I posted a separate thread)

Maybe all these are going into Version 8 trunk?

The Genre Tag will find blues, jazz etc.

In the Title Tag I add (DVD-A) or (LP) after the real title and search

What I meant was it won't need more/better hardware.

It would appear that a smaller footprint can be achieved, but in turn I
imagine some folks will insist on trying to run it on something with the
computing power of a digital watch...

The tarball is for both cpus, but I only changed something in the ppc

You need to delete the files. Reinstalling won't help as it might not

I'll check the arm files sometimes soon.

check/download at the time I wanted, and restarted the SBS.
And then back to =86400 when complete.

Recently the build time for the nightlies has changed to 3 hours later

Is this a permanent change?
I'm thinking about adjusting the time my server checks for an update.

You're right! I own, with MySQL, about 26000 tracks! With SQLite there
are suddenly only about 17700 tracks! The SQLite-scanner ignores all
tracks containing any special character like ä,ö,ü,ß etc.
Therefore I returned to tha last MySQL-Version of 7.4!
SQLite is a crappy thing. Not designed for large and fast databases.

Scanning with SQLIte will last about 30% longer than with my global
MySQL-instance and the number of files are now less then 40%!!

SQLIte is a real crap! Just my 2 cts to the topic!

MySQL is fast reliable (double write buffers) and there are enough
tools to repair, optimize and administrate the database!
If a SQLite database is damaged, e.g. by a power loss, the only thing
you ca do is, delete an rebuild them!
We should create an own/separate communitiy to preserve Squeezecenter
working with MySQL!

This never happened with the MySQL version, probably some flush-to-disc

A clear rescan all using r26797 brought back the missing tracks.

that from a business stand point more resources ($$$) are required to

Andy has said this is normal. He hasn't written the auto-rescan yet,
so it will give that error.

I commented that bit out for now, so people will stop posting about it.

The error I had shortly after that is that it would break if SC didn't
have read/execute permissions on everything in the music folder. (I
 had
hid some stuff by chmoding it so SC couldn't read it... it no longer
 tolerates that.)

2009-06-02 Thread snarlydwarf

Okay, something is broken...

I grabbed last night's .deb, chmod'd a directory to 0, and installed
it...

And it got stuck in a loop.

So I unchmod'd it, and tried again... and it still got stuck in a
loop.

I deleted the persistent cache and scanner cache, and restarted it...

It wanted to rescan of course... and it seemed fine (though I didnt do
much).

Because I asked for trouble: I restarted sc...

And now it is back to being locked after doing some sort of find (which
is again getting confused with filenames):

Code:

  [09-06-02 17:51:50.5806] Slim::Utils::Misc::msg (1180) Warning:

directory at /usr/share/perl5/Slim/Utils/Scanner/Local/AIO.pm line 86.

And then... silence.

I have a ton of the above, which may be unrelated (since it spams a
bunch of them and keeps spamming)...

But it does lock up with last night's nightly deb.

I can now confirm BUG 12082 to be fixed. I've just upgrade to the
latest nightly, but the previous one worked fine too.
It does however take quite a bit longer to scan than the MySQL-version
did. It seems to be around 30%slower on my library (25381 songs, roughly
an even split between MP3 FLAC, with some APE, WMA and MPC thrown in
for seasoning).
thnx for the bugfix!

Scanning seems to be a little bit faster than before, if I remember the
earlier scanning times correctly (collection of about 2200 songs).

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 nightlies - important info

2009-05-21 Thread snarlydwarf

back to andy's question: I seem to have found one difference between the
new scanner and the old:

For some reason I have some albums that have an ALBUMARTISTSORT tag,
but no ARTISTSORT.

(Most certainly should: Isaac Hayes should be under H not I so should
have an ARTISTSORT.. why MusicBrainz didn't insert it is another
question...)

So it's not really a SC bug: these tags make no sense:

TIT2 (Title/songname/content description): Precious, Precious
TPE1 (Lead performer(s)/Soloist(s)): Isaac Hayes
TRCK (Track number/Position in set): 1/6
TALB (Album/Movie/Show title): Presenting Isaac Hayes
TXXX (User defined text information): (ALBUMARTISTSORT): Hayes,
Isaac

No sign of the usual MB artist name, MB album artist (the Album Artist
ID is there, as is the artist id..) or MB Artist Sort.

But it does end up sorting very oddly.

Something amiss in one of the Picard plugins I use.. only a couple
dozen albums seem affected so I'll handfix them or smack picard into
behaving intelligently.

Just a further fyi that 'undefined values lead to undefined behavior'

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 nightlies - important info

2009-05-21 Thread JJZolx

One thing I've noticed is that subsequent scans with SQLite, even if
they're clear/rescans, are much faster than the first scan. I'm
guessing that this may be because when a 'clear' is done, the SQLite
database file remains the same size (actually, MySQL InnoDB databases
operate the same way), so the SQLite library file itself doesn't need to
grow when rebuilding the database.

If that's the case, I wonder if within SqueezeCenter you can tell the
SQLite routines to expand the database file in N kB chunks. This could
potentially speed up new changed rescans when adding new tracks by
requiring the file to be expanded less often.

I have both 7.4 Trunk and the 7.4 SQLite branch running simultaneously
on my server now, so I can do some better head to head testing if the
scanning performance. I'll post some new test results when I'm more
certain that things are as equal as I can get them.

Is it with 3.17 only possible to run 7.4 noweb/SQLite?
That would explain, why my try with 7.2.1 failed.

Here http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44325page=60 is

Ignoring the plugin incompatibilities, I have the same errors on Ubuntu
8.04(perl 5.8.8), See my post

However, the latest 7.4 runs OK on Ubuntu 9.04 (perl 5.10).

Looks to me like a Perl version issue.

I've not had any response to my post, maybe you'll have better luck.

I need your build script :-)

No script, unfortunately. Only quick fingers.

Have you (SD) thought about creating a build system that would build an
entire minimal system (incl. glibc etc.) using a native or cross
toolchain? That would then run on any Linux with the right CPU. This is
what SSODS does, only without a script/system. I might do that some day.

We're actually already doing something similar to this for ARM builds,
our build server builds an optimized version of Perl, all Perl
libraries, graphics libraries, etc. Not glibc though, but enough that
you can untar it and run. We don't have anything ready to package up

OK, I'm starting to get ready to test 7.4 and the new scanner. I have
some simple questions I hope will be easy for you folks to answer:

Is it possible to run 7.4 with SQLite from the svn code?

If so, then...

Where is the new compiled scanner executable?

Where is the SQLite executable?

I'm not seeing either of them in:

/usr/share/squeezecenter74_trunk/server/Bin/i386-linux

PS: I am still seeing a mysqld there, though.

Yes, but you have to check the code out from the following URL:

http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/slim/7.4/branches/noweb-sqlite

 If so, then...

Where is the new compiled scanner executable?

At first, I was also under the impression that this new scanner was a
compiled standalone application. It's not. Only the file parsing is
done in C. On Windows this takes the form of a shared library dll. I
believe on Linux the .so files perform a similar role. Have a look in:

/CPAN/arch/5.8/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/Audio/Scan

 Where is the SQLite executable?

PS: I am still seeing a mysqld there, though.

SQLite isn't a separate database server like MySQL (Oracle, MS SQL,
etc.). It's just a function library. Looks like it's also implemented
as a shared library compiled from C, as I see both SQLite .dll and Linux
.so files. See:

/CPAN/arch/5.8/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/DBD/SQLite

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 nightlies - important info

2009-05-18 Thread Michael Herger
Michael ,could you be a bit more verbose on this one?.

In order to get SC running on NAS systems, what fliflip et al. do, is wrap
up a whole bunch of perl files needed to run SC into some package. That
list of perl modules has changed quite a lot since 7.3: MySQL has been
replaced with SQLite, the music file scanner has completely been rewritten
in C, some modules have been updated etc. Therefore we (as the the author
of SlimNAS I'm part of that group) have to re-compile a whole lot of files
to get SC 7.4 up and running on these systems.

Here's a preliminary list of modules which will be needed:

Audio::Scan
Class::XSAccessor
Compress::Raw::Zlib
JSON::XS 2.232
DBD::SQLite
DBI 1.608
EV 3.6
IO::AIO
Linux::Inotify2

This list is neither final, nor fully up to date. Eg. some of the version
numbers might still change until the release.

Is it possible for you to create
compiled versions for QNAP like you do for the readynas devices?

We're very likely going to provide binaries for ARM based systems. This
should help 3rd parties a lot in getting SC up and running on any such
system, even if we can't provide the installation package for them.

If it's a question of equipment
I think(hoping) QNAP would be willing to supply you with equipment.

We would really love to see SC running on any system available out there.
But we do not have the resources to develop, maintain and test these
distributions. That said we'll try to help 3rd parties as much as possible
to get their packages up and running.

SD have stated that they will be providing support for ARM processors

QNAP uses ARM and X86 processors. The x86 are the more powerfull
devices. Personally I'd like to see binaries for the x86 series since
that is what I run SC on :-). For the x86 they use Intel atom and
Celeron processors which are binary compatable so only one version would
need to be created. They also use two versions of the ARM processors and
I don't know if they are binary compatable. I assume they are.

I thought there were some with PPC CPUs too, or is that another NAS?

If you have an x86 CPU you are done, you can run one of our standard
Linux distributions. If you can't run a deb or rpm, use the tarball
version.

We are going to try and have ARM builds soon, probably ARM9 and ARM11.
There are more variants of ARM CPUs though, so I'm not sure how
compatible these will be yet.
