[Ontbirds] Bohemian Waxwings, Snowy and Short-eared Owls - Wolfe Island to Merrickville

2008-01-20 Thread Jeff Skevington
Hello Ontbirders,

My Dad and I went to Wolfe Island yesterday to see the
raptors there. En route we saw a flock of over 1300
Bohemian Waxwings, 1 Cedar Waxwing, 67 American Robins
and 5 Brown-headed Cowbirds near Merrickville. On
Wolfe Island we saw 4 Snowy Owls, 3 Short-eared Owls,
5 Bald Eagles, 7 Northern Harriers and 41 Rough-legged
Hawks amongst others.

Most of the Wolfe Island birds were between 4th Line
and Hwy 95. The Short-eared Owl field is near the
corner of 95 and Reed's Bay Road. The Short-eared Owls
started to appear at about 5 pm (Snowy activity picked
up after 4 pm). If you want to catch the 5:30 ferry
that doesn't leave long to enjoy them. There are
likely more than we saw since we left to catch the
ferry. It would have been worth waiting until the 6:30
ferry if we didn't have so far to drive.

The Merrickville location deserves some more
attention. With that many berries around there could
be some great birds there. Merrickville is just west
of Smith's Falls. From Merrickville, head north on Co.
Rd. 2 about 2 km. The waxwings, etc. were feeding on
the west side of the road. The area is posted no
trespassing so unless you can get permission you will
have to bird from the road.

[Ontbirds]Cedar waxwings and robins in Waterloo

2008-01-20 Thread Barb Youmans
Today, at 11:00 am and again at 1:00 pm I observed approximately 20 cedar
waxwings feeding on some black berries in an area of bushes and cedars that
is usually swampy in warmer weather. Surprisingly, there were also 6 robins
sheltering in the bushes below the berry tree. Across from 400 Parkside Dr.

Barb Peeren
Waterloo, ON

Directions:
From Hwy.401, take Hwy.8 north and then follow Hwy 85 towards Waterloo.
Exit on Northfield and head west. At the first set of lights turn left
(Parkside), straight through the lights at Weber and the four way stop at
Cedarbrae and look for the swampy area on the right just after Heasley Park.
The large apartment building on the left is clearly posted as 400 Parkside.

[Ontbirds]Bald Eagle in Thorold

2008-01-20 Thread Jean and Bob

Hello All,

Today, thanks from my dad's tip, Jean and I observed a Bald Eagle in Thorold
at 2:15 PM. We found it in the same area we observed one (same bird?) last
year. It was seen soaring over Lake Gibson in the area between Beaverdams
Rd., Decew Rd. the 406. We observed only for a few minutes as it is very
cold today. After soaring over the water for a few minutes, it flew in to
the trees on the south-west side of the lake. We lost view of it at that
point. It was easily and safely observed from the old railway line running
parallel with Beaverdams Road.

St. Catharines, ON

Directions: From St. Catharines, travel south on Hwy. 406. Exit Beaverdams
Rd. and turn left, heading east on Beaverdams Rd. Lake Gibson will be on
both sides of the road approximately 1 km from the 406. There are some
small parking areas off the road here. A red barn will be on the left side
and the Hydro Road is on the right.

[Ontbirds]Tufted Titmouse Forest Park

2008-01-20 Thread David Morin
The Tufted Titmouse was seen again at 103 Manitou St from approx. 1030-1045
at the feeders.

David Morin

DIRECTIONS (from Ottawa): Courtesy Chris Lewis

Take Hwy 417 east to exit #79 and follow County Rd. #5 south to Route 500
West. Go east on Rte 500. Manitou is the 4th street on your right. The
feeders at #103 are behind the house, and the titmouse seems to prefer the
feeders with the red pole. Please do not block driveways and accessways as
there are plenty of places to park.

[Ontbirds]Long-eard Owl, Hamilton, Ontario

2008-01-20 Thread Michael Veltri
Hi everyone,

Great day of birding with 5 Bald eagles sighted at Woodlawn
Cemetery, two adults in the mix.

Also I happened to find a Long-eared Owl in some pines in the Cemetery also,
and it was photographed my myself and many local well known Hamilton area
photographers.

Then off to LaSalle park to photograph the male Wood Duck.

Even with the freezing cold temperatures and high winds, a very good day for
photography with a mostly sunny skies.

Good Birding, and Good Luck

Some photos can be seen here

[Ontbirds]Georgina and Keswick area Sunday, January 20, 2008

2008-01-20 Thread Glenn Steplock
Hi Folks,

Well thanks to the York Region tips this week, I took a drive up to Ravenshoe,
it was sunny and -13 this morning, add the howling winds and it was easily -20.
I would have seen nothing but blowing snow, if it were not for a chap setting
up his birding scope at mailbox #282, thanks for the view, sorry I didn't get
your name. The Owl was way out in a burm south side of the road, with its
head just popping up above the ground, virtually invisible to the naked eye. I
tried a few photos, but my 400mm was not nearly strong enough, binoculars gave
a decent view. If you look on the North side of mailbox #282 there is a stand
of trees with many rather large nests, I suspect a decent Blue Heron nesting
ground.

I then drove north up Leslie (Queen) to Keswick and followed the shoreline.
Before I hit Woodbine, I was lucky enought to spot a Juvenile Bald Eagle not
far off shore resting on the ice. I managed to get a few photos of the bird in
the strong winds, nothing spectacular I was on the leading edge of the snow
squalls. The Eagle then flew towards the North East part of Snake Island.
Shortly after the snow was so heavy, visibility was virtually a few feet. On
the way back, thru Hedge Lane the Briars I saw one white-breasted nuthatch
and one black-capped chickadee, the usual suspects. Saw a Coyote in the fields
exiting at Elgin Mills and 404. I should also note, when I started on my
journey, and hopped on the 404 North, I saw 4 hawks which is not unusual in
fact I tend to see a lot more on the drive up the 404. What was interesting
was the fact they were paired in 2's one pair just north of Elgin Mills on the
West side, and another pair near Bloomington
again on the West side out of the wind. Perhaps ready for spring nesting?
Sorry I wasn't able to stop and identify the species, I suspect Red Tails with
the first pair.

All in all not a bad outing. I am working on posting my photos on Flickr, will
provide a link to my postings in the future for those of you who enjoy viewing
the birds.

Regards,
Glenn
