[Ontbirds] Cave Swallow- East Point Park
The park was very quiet today with very few migrants. There was, however, a single Cave Swallow flying west along the shoreline at about 8:00 AM. Also of note was a very vocal Evening Grosbeak that was chasing Robins around. Michael King East Point Park has a good mix of meadow and woods and is situated on the bluffs. Most bird activity is anywhere along the waterfront trail and the adjacent woods. The park is roughly 1 km long and 1/2 km wide. Directions- From exit #387 of the 401 in Scarbourgh. Go south on Morningside Ave. East on Lawrence Ave. E. South on Manse Road. East on Copperfield Road. There are parking lots at either end of the park. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] BOREAL CHICKADEE - Holiday Beach Nov 1
Hi Folks Sorry for the belated report. I had a calling BOREAL CHICKADEE while doing the hawk count at the Holiday Beach hawk tower in Essex County, on November 1st. The bird was heard three times at 2:22 pm and never seen. All the chickadee flocks were on the move and I was not able to track down the boreal before the flock moved west along the lakeshore. Holiday Beach Conservation Area is just south of the town of Malden Centre in southern Essex County. Tom Hince P.O. [Ontbirds] Bohemian Waxwings etc., South Huron, Nov 2
Ontbirders, Spent the day in south Huron, and checked a few spots in north Lambton as well. 1st stop, at dawn, was the Grand Bend lagoons. With the front lagoon frozen over, I was met by quite an odd site..a cluster of shorebirds standing on the centre of the ice, with 4 Sandhill Cranes very nearby, quite the motley crew. The shorebirds included the lingering Hudsonian Godwit, a few Greater Yellowlegs, one White-rump and twenty Dunlin. A single Cackling Goose was in the 2nd lagoon, with many Canada's. I had intended to do a raptor watch along the stretch of shoreline from Grand bend north to just south of Bayfield, but got sidetracked when the appropriate east winds switched to NW by late morning, putting the brakes on what had been a meagre flight. Highlights included 3 Golden Eagles, 15 Rough-legs [13 light, 2 dark] and one imm. N Goshawk. 25 Sandhill Cranes were far less than expected for the location and date. Despite the wind shift, diurnal passerine migration was excellent for most of the morning, especially adjacent to the shore. Best obs. was a flock of 110 Bohemian Waxwings, at the end of Hendrik, where it joins with Shipka Line. These birds lingered only briefly before speeding off to the south. Something [else] to keep your eyes open for High counts / notable were Horned Lark - 2400, Lapland Longspur - 120, American Pipit - 80, Snow Bunting - 350, Pine Siskin - 130, White-winged Crossbill - 1, as well as tens of thousands of icterids, starlings, crows et al flooding south. This stretch of coast [dubbed ''Snider's Coast'' by some locals] can be spectacularly good for both passerines and raptors, especially on the right [NE or E] wind, with numbers of Rough-legged Hawk and Golden Eagle rivalling any site in the province. Certainly, migration in most conditions is excellent. Ever the contrarian, I decided to try to find Cave Swallows along the shoreline nooks and inflows. Not surprisingly, no luck there. The shoreline overall was pretty barren apart from 3 Snow Geese and a large Sturgeon carcass washed up on the beach. E-mail me privately for any specific directions, Cheers. Weather: Sunny but temperatures remained seasonal at 53f. Winds were strong out of the north west, averaging around 9mph, but gusts appeared to reach the upper teens. Afternoon cloud cover made for a good hawk finding back drop, but made for a higher wind chill. Raptor Observations: Turkey Vultures made an incredible push for this late in the season with 5,505 counted for the day. At 2pm we tallied 2,767 in one hour. 3 Golden Eagles came through between 2pm and 4pm (EDST). A total of 5,625 raptors were counted of 10 species. Non-raptor Observations: A single Cave Swallow was seen at exactly 9:43am. We also had a Common Loon, and 16 Tundra Swans. Huge numbers of American Crows passed through the area. Thousands could be seen across the horizon at most times. A conservative guess would say 135,000 plus. Predictions: Monday should be a very good day for migration. We are looking a sun, low wind, and low temperatures. Winds should be moving out of the north west, if at all. If it plays out right, a lot of birds will push out of Canada, and should give us nice overhead views. Temperatures topped off at 47f, but started off at 36f. Winds were mostly from the south east at about 5mph, no major gusts of note this time. It may have been cold but it was a good day for hawk migration. Raptor Observations: An amazing day for for Buteo and Vulture migration. Red-tailed Hawks came through at their highest of the season with 468 for the day. Between 4pm and 5pm (EDST) we tallied 218. We also had 108 Red-shouldered Hawks, as well as our first Rough-legged Hawks of the season with 3 spread throughout the day. An impressive 8 Golden Eagles were seen today with a high of 5 between 4pm and 5pm. As far as Turkey Vultures go, 1,140 were counted in groups of hundreds streaming throughout the day. Not as many TVs as yesterday, but more than expected. A total of 1,766 raptors were counted of 10 species. Non-raptor Observations: Predictions: Tomorrow should be a continuation of today's fantastic weather. It will be cold for us humans, but for raptor migration it's exactly what we want. Many thanks to our scheduled spotters who show up many times throughout the week, scheduled or not. Weather: Today was chilly and cloudy to start, but the sun shown through for the entire afternoon. Temperatures picked up to 52f. Winds stayed fairly constant from the south east around 6mph, a few minor gust touched 10mph. Raptor Observations: Another great day of hawk watching, but not nearly the numbers as yesterday. Today held some high quality birds none the less. For Buteos we had 418 Red-tailed Hawks, 44 Red-shouldered Hawks, and 1 Rough-legged Hawk of the light morph variety. Accipiters were oddly numbered today with 4 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 8 Cooper's Hawks, and an impressive 3 Northern Goshawks. The first Goshawk was a lifebird for our good British friend Bill Ding. A total of 1,085 Turkey Vultures continue to make their make their mark on this year. A grand total of 1,571 raptors were counted of 12 species. Non-raptor Observations: American Crows continue to impress and distract even the most serious hawk watchers. At least 50,000 came through today. Another flock of exactly 20 Tundra Swans were seen heading due south. A very unusual find was a single deceased and half eaten Dunlin in our parking lot. Somebody dropped their lunch. Predictions: Tomorrow will one of those throw the dart at the wall days. Tomorrow should be sunny in the beginning of day with clouds building up throughout the day. Some rain is supposed to move in around 5pm. If this holds true, raptors might make a solid early push before the storm.
