[Ontbirds] Iceland Gull, Conestogo Lake; Bohemian Waxwings, Belwood Lake

2010-12-05 Thread Christopher T. Burris

Greetings --

I took a rewarding trip on the backroads north of Waterloo today.

Conestogo Lake yielded 1 1st-winter ICELAND GULL at the dam. The
fields in the vicinity of the lake yielded two separate flocks of
SNOW BUNTINGS, totalling approximately 300 birds.

Belwood Lake hosted a mixed flock of approximately 80 WAXWINGS, of
which at least 15 were BOHEMIANS.

DIRECTIONS:

Conestogo Lake: From Waterloo, take 85 (then 86) NW toward Listowel.
At Dorking, turn right on Wellington Rd 11, then right on Wellington
Rd 45, then left again onto Wellington Rd 11 to the dam.

Belwood Lake: Take Wellington Rd 19 NE from Fergus, then turn right
(SE) onto Wellington Rd 26. Not far past the channel, there is a
patch of fruit-bearing evergreens on your left.

[Ontbirds] Lake Ontario shoreline-OFO trip-Dec. 5

2010-12-05 Thread dave milsom

15 OFO members attended today's outing. The weather forecasts probably disuaded
many but the sun shone throughout the day and it was warm in sheltered spots
off the lake.
50 species included 25 species of duck. Best finds were White-winged and Surf
scoters in rough waters off Millen in Stoney Creek; many Canvasbacks and
Redheads, 25 Ring-necked and about 200 Ruddy Ducks off La Salle Park in
Hamilton; 5 Northern Pintail, 6 Green-winged Teal, 4 DC Cormorants and 30
Northern Shovelers on Red Hill Creek leading into Windermere Basin. There were
all 3 swan species and 12 American Coots at La Salle Park. We also found all 3
mergansers, a Black-crowned Night Heron, Northern Mockingbird and 4 Song
Sparrows at Humber Bay Park East, 2 Peregrine Falcons at the lift bridge in
Hamilton, and at day's end 2 Yellow-rumped Warblers at Sioux Lookout in
Burlington.

Hi Ontbirders
Bohemian Waxwings continue to move through/around eastern Ontario. Today I

[Ontbirds] Bohemian Waxwings, Belted Kingfisher west of Newmarket

2010-12-05 Thread RON FLEMING
Driving west of Newmarket this morning I had a small flock of Bohemian Waxwings
(8) on the south side of the Lloydtown-Aurora Road, just east of Jane Street in
the south end of Kettleby.  The Lloydtown-Aurora Road is also known as the 18th
Sdrd.  It runs east-west from Hwy. 400.

Yesterday I had a Belted Kingfisher fly overhead when I was walking my dog
along
a section of the Holland Landing canal just east of Dufferin Street in
Ansnorveldt (north of Hwy. 9).

Newmarket, Kettleby and Ansnorveldt are directly north of Toronto, about
halfway
to Barrie.

[Ontbirds] King Eider off Thickson's Woods in Whitby

2010-12-05 Thread Glenn Coady

Ontbirds subscribers,

At 2:15 this afternoon I found a first year male King Eider off Thickson's
Woods just to the east of Dennis Barry and Margaret Carney's house (338 Crystal
Beach Boulevard). I was able to show it to Dan Kaczynski. Others are trying to
find it in a large raft of Greater Scaup right now.

Crystal Beach Boulevard is the private road which runs east from Thickson Rd.
S. right at the lake, just south of Thickson's Woods.

[Ontbirds] Brant at Sarnia, St. Clair River

2010-12-05 Thread Blake A. Mann

Hi all,

A Brant Goose was at Sarnia this morning with Canada Geese near the
freighter Capt. Henry Jackman at the north slip. Apparently it was seen
yesterday on the Michigan side and again this morning as it moved to the
Ontario side.

An adult Iceland Gull was near the Sidney Smith dock at the same time.

At Point Edward, there were hundreds of gulls, but nothing unusual. One
first basic Glaucous Gull stood out. At least 3 Red-necked Grebes were
swimming just offshore. Only one Common Loon seen.

Farther downriver at Cathcart Park north of Sombra, a large concentration of
gulls was there and at the south end of Detroit Edison Plant (~3000?). The
only gull that stood out was an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Directions to Point Edward Lakewatch: Find Front St. in Sarnia (along
river in downtown) and follow it north to St. Clair St. just past the 402
overpass. Turn left on St. Clair St. and follow it to its very north end in
Point Edward past Michigan Ave. Turn left on Victoria Ave. and go less than
two blocks to Fort St. Turn right onto Fort St. and go to the parking lot
at the lake.

Directions to Sombra and St. Clair River: Find Hwy 40 that runs N/S between
Wallaceburg and Sarnia. Turn west on Lambton Rd. 2 (Bentpath Line) and take
to Sombra on the St. Clair River. Fawn Island is just to the south of the
village. The St. Clair Parkway (Rd. 33) follows the river along its length.
Cathcart Park is a few km north of Sombra.

Cheers,

[Ontbirds] Yellow Warbler and Ross' Geese at Erieau

2010-12-05 Thread Keith Burk
After looking for the Turnstone today (which we did not see), my dad and I
were heading out of Erieau when I noticed a yellow bird along the side of
the road. Knowing it was something good we stopped right away and it turned
out to be a Yellow Warbler! We watched it for several minutes just working
its way along the fence row. It chipped several times. After a few phone
calls Steve Charbonneau showed up and watched the bird until it flew in
behind some cabins towards the bay. Hard to say where it could end up for
sure.

Directions: Take County Rd. 12 into Erieau. As you come to Erieau, there is
a Church on the left. The warbler was just before this along the small
fence. The cabins are just before the fence.

There were also 2 Ross' Geese in a corn field along Lakeshore drive well
past McGeachy's Pond.

Directions: Take County Rd. 12 to McGeachy's Pond. Turn left on Lakeshore
Drive. Anywhere along this Rd. the geese could be.

[Ontbirds] Great Egret, Embro CA, Dec 5

2010-12-05 Thread JAMES HOLDSWORTH
Ontbirders,

Ross Snider and I saw a Great Egret this morning in the pond adjacent to the
Embro Conservation Area. This bird was 1st found by Stefan Labonte on the 4th
and provides Oxford with a latest ever record and our 2nd Dec. record.

The Egret can easily be seen from Road 84, at the north end of the lake. I also
had two Common Redpolls fly-over, the 1st locals of the fall.

Directions - From 401, take exit 222 to Road 6 north to Embro. Drive 1km north
to Road 84, turn west on 84 and proceed about 400 m to the CA, on the south
side
of the road.

[Ontbirds] Possible Coopers Hawk in Downtown Lindsay.

2010-12-05 Thread judykennedy
Hi Birders:

Last Friday, while parking in the northeast end of the Bank of Montreal parking
lot on William Street, I spotted what appeared to be a Cooper's Hawk, perched
on the top of the big chimney at the back of the Canada Services Building. It
remained perched there for about 5 minutes, before if flew off due east, in the
direction of a large flock of Pigeons, which roost on the downtown rooftops.

William Street is the first north/south street west of Lindsay Street (hwy 35
as it enters Lindsay), and intersects with Kent street, in downtown Lindsay.
The bank of Montreal is south of Kent Street, on the East side.

Cheers,

Judy Kennedy.

[Ontbirds] Turkey Vultures, American Pipits - Flamborough, Black-legged Kittiwake, King Eider (yesterday), Fifty Point

2010-12-05 Thread Cheryl Edgecombe
Winter Listers:

Just a few goodies that people have dug up today for winter listers who are
out.

1) Dave Don just phoned to advised that there are 5 Turkey Vultures at
the same roost as last year on Concession 5 just west of Woodhill Road near
the Patterson Tract. Earlier today, I had a flock of 20 American Pipits at
5th Concession West and Westover Road.

>From the 403 Hamilton, take Highway 6 North, turn left (west) on Concession
4 West. Continue a fair bit west past Hwy 8 and west of Woodhill Road.
There is a red mailbox at 1948 4th Concession West on the south side of the
road.

2) Jacob Bruxer texted me to advise of a Black-legged Kittiwake flying
west from Fifty Point Conservation Area. Yesterday, Brandon Holden had an
adult male King Eider flying west from Fifty Point.

Take QEW Niagara to 50 Road and follow signs to the park. Anywhere along
the west end of Lake Ontario could be good.

Cheers,

Cheryl Edgecombe

[Ontbirds] Ruddy Turnstone, Purple Sandpiper - Erieau; Wilson's Phalarope - Blenheim

2010-12-05 Thread Barbara Charlton
Winter Listers:

A stop at Erieau at 11:10 this morning yielded a Ruddy Turnstone (found by Alan
Wormington Dec 1st) and a Purple Sandpiper. The birds were difficult to see as
they were mostly on the leeward side of the rocks until a fishing boat flushed
them. They then landed out of sight behind vegetation. Hopefully they will
return to the rocks later today.

Directions: Take Count Rd 12 into Erieau and follow Mariner's Rd to the end to
the government dock. The birds were visible from the left end. Look east behind
the breakwall. Both birds were amongst the rocks at the left end of the small
island.

The Wilson's Phalarope was still at the Blenheim lagoons today. It was seen in
the north east corner of pond 3 at 10:15 a.m. Also at the lagoons was a flock
of 30 American Pipits.

Blenheim Lagoon Directions: Exit 401 at #90 (Communications Rd.) and head to
Blenheim. At the main stoplight turn right (west) onto Rd. 3. Travel about 1.5
km and turn right (north) onto Lagoon Rd., at the car wash, and continue north
about 1 km to gate. You must have annual permit to enter, available at the
Municipal Service Centre.

[Ontbirds] Greater White-Fronted Geese and Snow Geese Carp []

2010-12-05 Thread Iain Wilkes

At 7:30 am I arrived back at Carp Rd just south of the town to see if I could
get the White-fronted that I missed last night as I left before they returned
at the end of the day.I was soon joined by two other birders staring at the
hundreds of geese hundered down combined with the bitter wind making it rather
challenging. Eventually one head was spotted in the main group on this side of
the water. Using the arm waving technigue we were able to get a lot of the
geese to at least put their heads up. There were four White-fronteds and two
Snow geese.

Good luck to anyone else - it just takes perseverence and lots of scanning
