[Ontbirds] Black Vultures at Queenston Heights, Niagara

2012-02-15 Thread Andrew Keaveney
Today Dave Purcell, Jeremy Hatt, Matt Timpf and I joined forces watching for
vultures from Queenston Heights looking out over the town of Queenston, NY.
After a period of just over an hour beginning 12:30pm we watched a total of 6
Turkey Vultures and 6 Black Vultures fly painstakingly closer to the Canadian
side of the river. Eventually 3 of the Blacks were seen to cross the river and
seen again further down over the Lewiston bridge with great views had by all. 3
of the Turkeys spent most of their soaring in Canadian airspace.

The California Gull was seen down amongst the rocks (American rocks
unfortunately) halfway between Sir Adam Beck and the Butterfly Gardens at one
of it's old haunts by Dave and I just before noon. We could not refind it late
afternoon despite much searching.

Directions: QEW to 405. Exit at last chance before boarder crossing and follow
signage to Queenston Heights (where the traffic circle is). There are two pull
off areas on the right hand side as you go downhill towards Niagara-on-the-lake.

[Ontbirds] Mountain Bluebird, Bohemian Waxwings Prince Edward Point Feb.15

2012-02-15 Thread M. Bain
February 15, 3.30pm:
The big flock of robins that the Mountain Bluebird is with seems to be
slowly moving west along Long Point Road.
As I came round the sharp corner at #4447, just after the intersection with
the eastern end of Babylon Road, I had my window open and could hear
Bohemian Waxwings. So I walked back and found at least 3 Bohemians in a
flock of about 60 Cedar Waxwings. Then I noticed many robins, 40+, feeding
in the bushes and trees at the corner, and among them was the female
Mountain Bluebird, actively perching and flying about.
Smaller groups of robins were scattered along Long Point Road to the Dive
Charter place, with about 20 robins at #5136. Opposite here was a distant
large bare tree full of waxwings, at least 100, but as I got my scope out to
check for more Bohemians they all flew.
One roadside Northern Shrike between #4447 and #5136.

Directions courtesy of Kathy Felkar and Mike Burge:

To reach Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area, take Main Street from
the east end of downtown Picton, down the "Town Hill", and turn immediately
right onto Union Street (directly across from Tip of the Bay Motel). Follow
Union Street out of Picton (becomes County Road 8) for 2.5 km, and at the
junction in the highway, follow County Road 17. Take County Road 17 for 6.5
km and look for the Black River Cheese sign, and turn left onto County Road
16 and follow for 1 km to the Stop sign at County Road 13. Follow County
Road 13 past Black River Cheese for 23.6 km to the Prince Edward Point
National Wildlife Area (County Road 13 eventually becomes Long Point Road).
Follow the Long Point Road until you see Ducks Dive Charters.

Ontbirders and Ontbirdettes,

I just got in from a birding romp with Jackson Hudecki.

[Ontbirds] Ontario winter bird list update #6

2012-02-15 Thread Josh Vandermeulen

Ontbirders,

My last winter list update was at the beginning of February, detailed the 215
bird species that had been recorded in Ontario this winter. In the past 2 weeks
an additional 6 species were added, bring the total up to 221 species. This is
easily the highest total we have had since the winter list has been officially
compiled and possibly the highest total ever recorded by birders in Ontario.
This will be my last update until the final results are tallied.

The new birds, with the first date listed in brackets, are:
Blue-winged Teal (January 1): 2 birds seen with 320 Green-winged Teal on the
St. Clair CBC
Virginia Rail (January 18): a dead bird found dead on a road north of St.
Williams
Gyrfalcon (January 25): several birds seen. One in Sudbury and another in
eastern Ontario. The E. Ontario bird was seen near Crysler, and possibly the
same bird was seen several days later in Ottawa.
Band-tailed Pigeon (February 4): Only the 3rd winter record that I am aware of.
It came to a feeder for 3 days in Bracebridge. Many birders were able to see it
thanks to the gracious homeowners.
White-winged Dove (late January?): Still present in North Bay, has been coming
to a feeder for several weeks. I'm still working on getting the first date.
Yellow-throated Warbler (February 1): I don't have any details other than a
photo of this bird, apparently taken at a feeder in Windsor.

I have send the list to Blake Maybank and hopefully he will post the results on
the website soon. A link to the webpage:
http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/maybank/other/onwinter.htm

There are not very many possible species left, though we still are missing
Eurasian Wigeon and Yellow-headed Blackbird. Perhaps an early Tree Swallow or
Eared Grebe will be found at the end of the month?

If anyone has heard of sightings of any missing species, just shoot me an email.

hanging about the fields near house #452. This morning they were buzzed by
a Raven, a very uncommon bird in this area.

[Ontbirds] White-winged Dove, North Bay

2012-02-15 Thread richardtafel
All;
The White-winged Dove is very much alive and healthy in North Bay. Saw
it very readily yesterday aft. It is more often, it seems at the residence
of 1557 Pinewood Cresc. , than at a neighbours 1532 but could be
located at one or the other. The main respondent is Peter Mladen - 1557
Pinewood Crescent North Bay 705 474-2052. He is quite amenable to visits
simply go around to the back of his place, via the driveway.
It comes readily in the warmer afternoons, normally by itself, it seems.
It often sits peacefully in a deciduous tree, wondering what all the fuss is
about.
North Bay is 350 miles due north of Toronto, no stoplights (until you
hit the city) now about 3 3/4 hours away. The Pinewood area is in the
north-west quadrant.

I found my 1st redwing of the year and a great egret in La Salle along turkey

about 1 mile south of Sprucewood road. Both birds were seen east of Matchette
road from the little bridge that crosses turkey creek.

[Ontbirds] Hybrid Aythya at Bronte Harbor

2012-02-15 Thread Andrew Keaveney
The male hybrid was present again this morning just east (30 meters?) of the
large yellowish yacht club house. Along with a half dozen Redheads it swam and
dove amongst some open boat docks in the outer harbor marina. Parking in the
marina is free.

I agree with the consensus on hybrid parentage. Great find Gavin and Sue!

Directions: QEW exiting at Bronte rd., continuing south to the lakeshore.
Marina is on east side of harbor.
