Re: [Ontbirds] Ross' Gull - Chambly, Québec
Hi Ontario birders. Just returned from Chambly about an hour ago. The Ross' was first seen to-day around 1:45PM behind the old fort near the marina. It had apparently not been seen earlier in the day despite the fact that there were numerous people looking for it since the early morning hours. I heard that it is Mark Gawn who first spotted it flying in from further on the lake. The bird stayed around, feeding on the water in company of numerous Bonaparte Gulls, at least until around 3:00PM when it took off and flew behind a row of trees at the base of the rapids. At that point most people left and I do not know if it was seen again in the afternoon. At the suggestion of a fellow birder from Ottawa who just called me, I will post tomorrow whatever news I see on the Québec forum about sightings or non sightings. Good luck to anyone trying for this great bird in the coming days. Local birders Derek and Christina stopped by with hopes of seeing a Golden Eagle but unfortunately arrived a little too late. Thanks to all observers who braved the winds to help scan the skies. Weather: The temperate ranged from a low of 6.5 climbing to a high of 9.1 C. The winds were strong out of the west the entire day making it feel a little cooler. The forcasted shift to a more northerly direction unfortunately did not occur. The skies were mostly cloudy throughout the day with the occasional patch of blue sky and even a little sun. Raptor Observations: Despite the less than favourable winds, a total of 69 raptors of 11 species were counted. The highlights for the day were 2 Peregrine Falcons that came over the trees, dropped to tower level and then quickly continued on down the beach, and an immature Golden Eagle that flew by late afternoon. Non-raptor Observations: Tundra swans are starting to move through in larger flocks - 145, a single late Tree Swallow fought the strong headwinds early in the morning, Goldfinches are still moving through in numbers - 535, A single Am. Crow late in the day, Great Blue Heron - 10, Great Egrets - 2, Lesser Yellowlegs 2, Dunlin 2. Predictions: Gusty winds out of the SW switching to W. Cloudy with rain beginning late morning. 90% POP. [Ontbirds] OFO outing to Cobourg and Presqu'ile: Snow Goose, 2 scoters, Dunlin, Red-bellied Woodpecker,
Hello birders: 25 participants enjoyed an enjoyable, albeit windy (!), day birding at Cobourg Harbour, Chubs Point and Presqu'ile Provincial Park where a seasonally productive 42 bird species were encountered. A COMMON LOON at extremely close range greeted the group first-thing in the morning at Cobourg Harbour. RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, NORTHERN SHOVELER and AMERICAN WIGEON were some of the more notable ducks seen in the harbour, along with a lone BONAPARTE'S GULL and a skittish group of 5 DUNLIN. Chubs Point south from the Grafton exit on the 401 was exceedingly windy and thus warranted a short visit. Regardless, wave-bouncing SURF and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were observed. The highlight of the day was the SNOW GOOSE at Presqu'ile's Beach 2 that has been present for several days. A barely-alive Giant Water Bug feeding on a dead LONG-TAILED DUCK on the beach marked the most interesting find of the day! It was one of two moribund insects seen -- the other being a Monarch near the Lighthouse. The shelter of Bayshore Road allowed for steadier views of both previously seen scoters, a HORNED GREBE, REDHEADS and GREATER SCAUP in Brighton Bay. The resident RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at 186 Bayshore Road made for a good finale. Many thanks go to Maureen Riggs for her pre-scouting, Doug McRae for his tip on the Snow Goose and the Helleiner and Gilmour families for generously allowing group members to bird on their properties. Cobourg Harbour is located due south off the Division Street exit on the 401; Chubs Point is located south from the Grafton exit on the 401 and Presqu'ile Provincial Park is well-signed south off 401 exit 509 (Brighton/Campbellford). [Ontbirds] Franklin's Gull - Niagara River
After 2 hours of looking, I was finally able to locate, about 45 minutes ago, the previously reported Franklin's Gull. The bird was upstream of Adam Beck, opposite Devils Hole SP and was sitting on the rocks in the river with at least several hundred other gulls. It then flew downstream towards Adam Beck although I have been unable to relocate it after moving my position to the overlook. It may have gone back towards Devil's Hole. Directions - QEW to Hwy 405. Take the Stanley Ave exit and cross over the 405 to Portage Rd. Turn right and follow Portage to the roundabout, then take Niagara Pkwy upstream in the direction of the Falls. Just past the Adam Beck hydro facility is the overlook on the left side of the road. There is room there for parking. There is a decent viewing area for Devil's Hole about 400m upstream from the Adam Beck overlook. Take the paved path upstream from the overlook towards the falls. When you get to the first hydro tower along the paved path, there is a white cylinder shaped object to your left, and a dirt trail leading to the edge of the gorge. There is room for maybe a couple of people to set up there with a relatively unobstructed view. There is no fence however, so extreme caution is warranted.
