[Ontbirds] Common Eider - Bowen Rd. Park - Fort Erie, ON
Ontbirders, To expand on Barb's post, I just wanted to make some corrections in regards to the location where we saw the Common Eider. We parked on the shoulder of the Niagara Pkwy adjacent to Bowen Road Park which is where we located the bird. This location is across the river from Rich's Marina and north from the International RR Bridge. Also to clarify, the Common Eider was a female bird. Also for those who are interest we first noticed the bird floating down river (north), irregularly diving. It eventually floated down river almost out of sight and with a stroke of luck the bird flew back up river (south) right past us!! You can see our ebird checklist below as well as the photos I obtained. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15699521 Cheers, Brett FriedGuelph, Ontario Directions: The directions should be attached below at the bottom of this email. Ontbirders: Brett Fried, Erika Hentsch, Janice Chard and I just had a Common Eider in the Niagara river at Fort Erie just north of the Peace Bridge across from "Rich's Marina". We were fairly certain when Brett first spotted the bird it was a Common, not a King Eider but the bird drifted further out into the river and the lighting conditions became worse. Just when we thought we might be left wondering, the bird took flight and flew up river past us for positive identification. Photos taken by Brett. [Ontbirds] Harlequin Ducks - Thornbury
Two adult male Harlequins have been in the mouth of the Beaver River in Thornbury for the last hour. They've been in the general area for about two weeks and have become fairly reliable in the river. If they're not in the mouth of the river, check upstream to the railway bridge, or out in the open water from the river mouth. Also check Georgian Bay from Bayview Park to the east. When they're out in the lake they sometimes associate with Goldeneye. Directions: Beaver River/Thornbury Harbour - From Hwy 26 in Thornbury turn north onto Bruce St, then right onto Huron St down to the river and Thornbury harbour. Bayview Park - From Hwy 26 turn north onto Mill St, then east onto Bay St. Follow Bay St to Bayview Park. [Ontbirds] Red-necked Grebe, Iceland Gull, Haliburton Co.
Found a lone Red-necked Grebe on Gull Lake, east of the Gull River mouth on Sandy Bay Rd. yesterday around noon. Today, the first white-winged gull appeared at the Haliburton dump...a dark, first winter bird. Observed around 1:30 pm. Gull Lake is S of Minden. Take Hwy 35 S from Minden to Sandy Bay Rd. Bird was about 100m off shore immediately after the lake comes into view. Photos taken. Haliburton Dump is W of the village of Haliburton, off Cty Rd 21. Take Industrial Park Rd. N to the landfill. [Ontbirds] Mottled Duck - Reesor Pond
17.11.13 - Noon - among a flock of 2000 Mallards within which other species could easily be identified such as Black Ducks there appeared a male MottledDuck. It showed a yellow bill with a black dot at the gape and a buffy neck andface with a black eye-stripe and darkish cap. Unlike the Black Ducks It had along-necked appearance as if looking for its like in the mob - this behaviourcatching my eye. Also on Friday a male Mallard/Pintail cross was seen distinguished by a whitecravat instead of a neck-ring while it also sported peculiar spiral tail feathers. [Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes, Little Gulls, etc., etc. - Hagersville & Long Point areas
Yesterday, Sat. Nov. 16th Ian Cannell and I birded the subject areas and although the daylight hours are short now we did cover a lot of ground and we did find 58 species of birds but some waterfowl were too far out on the lake to ID. Following are some of the birds and some of the totals (some totals guest-estimated of course with some like the R-B Mergansers and other waterfowl likely very under estimated). Common Loons, Pied-billed and Horned Grebes, D-C Cormorants, 1000+ Tundra Swans, N. Pintail, 250 to 300 A. Wigeons, 350+ Canvasbacks, 1000+ Greater Scaup, Lesser Scaup, 50+ Bufflehead, 2500+ Red-breasted Mergansers (many flying past over the lake), Hooded and Common Mergansers, Northern Harriers, Rough-legged Hawks, 22 Red-tailed Hawks, 12 American Kestrels, 2 Merlins, 350 to 400 American Coots, 175 to 200 Sandhill Cranes (one large flock in a field was too dense to count), 22 Dunlin, 5 Little Gulls, Bonaparte’s Gulls, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull, N. Flicker, Carolina Wrens, 8 E. Bluebirds, N. Mockingbirds, 50+ A. Pipits in one flock, 50+ A. Tree Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows, many Dark-eyed Juncos, 500 to 600 red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackle and Brown-headed Cowbird. Inner Bay off Port Rowan Harbour contained an estimated 1 to 12000 waterfowl but most too far out to ID even with a scope and there was a good number of Bonaparte’s Gulls on and over the bay. During the week and on Saturday you will be birding in the Long Point area with a background of gun fire coming from duck shooters. Directions HAGERSVILLE AREA Hagersville is south of Hamilton on Hwy 6. Exit from Hwy 403 at Hwy 6 in Ancaster and continue southeast then south to Hagersville. You just simple bird any road in the Hagersville / Jarvis / Fisherville / Nanticoke square ( a rough square ). LONG POINT AREA - CENTERED ON PORT ROWAN Port Rowan is southwest of Hamilton, to reach it you can drive south on Hwy 6 from Hamilton, passing through Hagersville and turning right, west in Jarvis onto Hwy 3, drive to Simcoe and turn left, south on Hwy 24 and follow this to Hwy 59, ( it curves to the west south of Simcoe) and your in the Long Point Area. Turn left (south) on Hwy 59 at Hwy 24 and Port Rowan is straight down Hwy 59 (about 6 kms) on County Rd 42 (Lakeshore Rd), Big Creek Marsh, etc. are just a little further south of County Rd 42.
