[Ontbirds] Red Bellied Woodpecker Toronto

2014-11-02 Thread Peter Stewart
The bird was in my back garden on Algonquin Ave at noon today. I would think
the bird could be found in in the south eastern area of High Park, which is
directly across Parkside Ave from Algonquin.

Visitors:
There were a pile of visitors today...Rose W. from Dutton; Peter & Barbara
J.John, Rick, Doug, Mike, Jim L. and Fran R. from Buffalo and many others.
Thanks to everyone for their help today and all the gang of volunteer
observers and counters.

Weather:
Lots of sunshine as expected which made it difficult to spot birds but
allowed the temp to get to a high of 7C. The winds were lighter today but
continued from the NNW for the day.

Raptor Observations:
Another stellar flight and in fact even better than yesterday's with a
total of 2,411 birds. The bulk of today's flight was Redtails (1,402) and
TVs (651) along with Red-shoulders (227). The highlights included another
41 Golden Eagles (wow!), 4 Goshawks and another 3 Roughlegs. Other species
included Bald Eagle (13), N. Harrier (9), Sharpies (40), Cooper's Hawks
(16), Kestrels (2) and some very late Broadwings (3).

Non-raptor Observations:
Thanks to Cary for her early bird observations this morning including 6
Horned Grebes right below the cliff; later, a lone Pied-billed was spotted
from the cliff, diving for a meal as well as a few Bonaparte's and
Ring-billed Gulls plus some Mergansers flying low across the water.
Species seen from our observation spots at Sharpie Alley and later, the B&B
were Sandhill Cranes, Killdeer, 2 Snow Geese, 1 Common Loon, Crows along
with 2 Ravens), Red-winged Blackbirds, E. Starlings, E. Bluebirds and PIne
Siskins. Along the road and just inside the woods were some Purple
finches, BC Chickadees, Am. Goldfinch, Hairy & Red-bellied Woodpecker,
Cedar Waxwings (many!), Am. Robins (also quite a few), a Yellow-rumped
Warbler, Northern Cardinal, Blue Jay and 2 Mourning Dove.

Amazingly, several observers reported seeing Meadowhawk dragonflies today
and at the B&B observers also noted a Clouded Sulphur Butterfly!

Predictions:
Strong SW winds forecast for Monday will tend to push the birds inland away
from the hawkwatch so even though I expect birds will be on the move there
won't likely be too many that are spotted at the hawkwatch.

Visitors:
Special thanks to "the regulars" for all their help in spotting and
identifing distant birds. Today was truely a group effort with Dan Lumm
and Paul Pratt manning the spotting scopes, and Jim McCoy, Jenna McDermott
and Larry Ludwicki searching for distant birds. Several couples braved the
chilly temperatures to enjoy a beautiful sunny day and join us on the tower
for and hour or two at a time.

Weather:
A chilly morning with our first hour temperature reading at 0 degrees C
warmed to 8.6C by late afternoon. Skies were clear and sunny with only a
slight amount of cloud cover mid day. Winds started the day from the NW
but shifted to W by 11am and SW by noon. A thin layer of ice covered the
pond to the east of the tower until about 10am.

Raptor Observations:
Raptors were distant for the most part today. Ten species were recorded
today -- Falcons were a no show! We had a stunning Adult Northern Goshawk
pass over the trout pond and marsh in the 9am hour eye level from the top
of the tower. Five Golden Eagles today, all distant and high trying to
sneak by without notice. Red-tailed Hawks were our high count hawk today
with 84 counted. Turkey Vultures are still on the move with 315.

Non-raptor Observations:
Large flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds, mixed with Grackles were on the move
as well as American Crows. American Goldfinch are still coming thru in
groups of 6 - 25 birds. Several Tree Swallows were noted today going over
singly, or in pairs. Eastern Bluebirds were heard but lost in the blue
skies along with Lapland Longspurs, Pine Sisken, & Tufted Titmouse. Great
Egrets are still in the marsh (5), along with Great Blue Herons (7). All
the usual suspects in the duck world with a couple additions being 2 Hooded
Mergansers, 5 Horned Grebes (out in lake Erie), 11 Tundra Swans, & 2
Redheads.

Predictions:
Slightly warmer temperatures than today with cloudy skies and SW winds.

Weather:
Clear, blue sky greeted us upon arrival. Around midday, a high ceiling of
thin, puffy cloud sprouted up, gifting us favorable spotting conditions for
a time. Then, later in the day, the sky reverted to blue. Temperatures were
below freezing at the start, warming up as the day progressed. The wind was
light and out of the northwest early, shifting to the west later.

Raptor Observations:
Golden Eagles galore! A 23-eagle hour powered us to our best Golden Eagle
flight of the fall and one of the most active and enjoyable outings of the
season to date. For a 45-minute stretch during the early afternoon, a
flurry of eagles dominated the viewing area, pumping through in small
groups of two, three and four.

But on a day filled with spectacle, the crowd-pleasing show put on by the
Goldens was only foremost among many. Two more Northern Goshawks were added
as well, one of which came in impossibly low, skimming the surface of the
lake as it zoomed into the trees off to our right. Rough-legged Hawks
didn't disappoint, either. Six were tallied, two of which decided to engage
in an acrobatic aerial battle before gliding off.

Again plentiful, Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks on occasion amassed
into awe-inspiring conglomerations before streaming out high overhead or
off to our north. And last but not least, Northern Harriers put in their
best showing since an impressive late September run of strong activity.

Non-raptor Observations:
Tundra Swan (3), Canvasback (8), American Crow (800+), Pine Siskin (120+),
Forster's Tern (3)

Predictions:
Partly cloudy, cool temps, moderate southwest wind.

Purple Sandpiper - 1 bird with a flock of 11 Sanderling at the tip of Fish
Point
Clay-colored Sparrow - 1 bird with a flock of Chipping Sparrows at the
north end, near Scudder; remarkably Rob Tymstra had found another bird at
his place earlier in the day.
Magnolia Warbler - 1 first-basic at Fish Point in an abandoned lot, moving
with a flock of Kinglets.

White-winged Scoter - 1 bird at Fish Point (rare-ish on the island)
Black Scoter - 3 birds at Middle Point (also rare-ish on the island)

[Ontbirds] Ruddy Ducks, Grenadier Pond, Toronto

2014-11-02 Thread Graydon
There are currently fifty-plus Ruddy Ducks in Grenadier Pond in Toronto.
No idea if they're going to be there tomorrow, but they're there now and
actively feeding. (Feeding complete with whole-flock-at-once diving.)

(Also some bufflehead, many northern shovellers, and the ubiquitous
mallards.)

The Ruddy Ducks are near the south end of the pond, making the 501 Queen
streetcar and walking up from the Colborne Lodge stop the easiest way to
see them.

High Park is located in Toronto between the Queensway and Bloor Streets,
north-south, and Parkside Drive and Ellis Avenue East-West. The
eponymous subway stop, and walking ~2.0 km south, the Queen (501)
streetcar to the Colborne Lodge Drive stop and walking ~0.5 km north, or
driving along the Queensway or Lakeshore and turning north on Colborne
Lodge Drive and doing your best to find a parking spot from which you
can walk down to the Pond will all get you to the appropriate location
beside Grenadier Pond, which has a comprehensive trail along its eastern
edge.

[Ontbirds] Long Point Update to November 3 - Black-legged Kittiwake, Ovenbird, Chesnut-sided Warbler, Oregon Junco.

2014-11-02 Thread Stuart Mackenzie
Ontario Birders,

Fall migration started to show signs of weakness this last week, at least in
terms of most landbird migrants. In other respects things are just getting
started. There have been approximately 25,000 Redhead on the Inner Bay
accompanied by a smattering of most dabbling ducks. Another 10,000 Greater and
5,000 Lesser have been inhabiting the Outer Bay. Small numbers of Long-tailed
Duck and all three Scoters have been observed at the Tip or on the Outer Bay.
Numbers of Tundra Swans and Sandhill Cranes are building on the Inner Bay, Big
Creek Marsh, and fields along Front/Lakeshore Rd. Numbers of Northern Harriers
rose substantially and Rough-legged Hawks made nearly daily appearances in the
region. 5 Golden Eagles were observed at the BSC headquarters on November 1.
The river of blackbirds has been impressive peaking at about 575,000 grackles,
blackbirds and starlings n October 27. Numbers have since declined to about
150,000 individuals later in the week. A regular stream of subtle late
migrants have been making their way off the point daily such as American
Pipit, Eastern Bluebird, and Eastern Meadowlark. High numbers of Pine Siskin
and Purple Finch have also continued to move through consistently.

Highlights:
Cackling Goose - Three were observed at Old Cut October 27 (APT, TJT).
Canvasback - A high of 280 were observed at Old Cut October 25 (LPBO).
Redhead - A high of 26,477 were observed at Old Cut October 24 (LPBO).
Red-breasted Mergansers - A high of 6810 were observed at the Tip October 28
(LPBO).
Red-throated Loon -A high of 12 were observed at the Tip October 28 and one on
October 30 (LPBO). One was off the Long Point Provincial Park November 2 (SAM).
Common Loon - A high of 188 were observer at the Tip October 28 (LPBO).
Horned Grebe - Between 30 and 78 were observed at the Tip daily throughout the
week. A high of XXX were observed on the Outer Bay October 30.
Red-necked Grebe - One was observed at the Tip October 28, two on 29, and one
on 30 (LPBO). Two were off the Long Point Provincial Park November 2 (SAM).
Golden Eagle - Five (4 first basic, one adult) were observed over the Bird
Studies Canada headquarters on November 1 (SAM).
Northern Goshawk - The first migrant of the season was observed at the BSC
headquarters October 24 (JRA).
Red-shouldered Hawk - Two were observed at Old Cut and the Tip October 27 (HBM,
JCC, DLL, SMS).
American Golden Plover - One was observed at the Tip October 24 (LPBO).
Black-bellied Plover - Two were observed at the Tip October 31.
Ruddy Turnstone - One first basic individual was in the Long Point Provincial
Park November 2 (SAM).
White-rumped Sandpiper - Two were at the Tip October 30 (LPBO).
Pectoral Sandpiper - One was observed at Lee Brown Wildlife Management Area
October 30 (APT)
Parasitic Jaeger - One was observed at the Tip October 28 (LPBO).
Little Gull - One flew over Old Cut on November 1 (LPBO).
Black-legged Kittiwake - One first basic was observed at Gravelly Bay October
30 (APT, SAM).
Glaucous Gull - One was observed at the Tip November 1 (SMS).
Red-headed Woodpecker - One first basic was observed at the Tip October 30
(LPBO), and two different definitive basic individual was observed in
Forestville and Turkey Point November 1 (SAM).

[Ontbirds] Baltimore Oriole, Colonel Samuel Smith Park, Toronto

2014-11-02 Thread Garth Riley via ONTBIRDS
--- Begin Message ---
While watching a large flock of Pine Siskins feeding on Goldenrod seeds, Nancy
spotted a Baltimore Oriole in the flock. This is a late record for this
species. Good pictures were taken and I was able to rule out other possible
oriole species.

Colonel Samuel Park is located at the foot of Kipling Ave. south of the QEW in
Toronto. Walk south on the main trial (south of the turn around) toward the
lake turn left (east) and walk towards the eastern point. The bird was with a
flock of about 50 Pine Siskins feeding in the meadow located before the point.

[Ontbirds] Cattle Egret near Kingston

2014-11-02 Thread Mike Burrell
Mark Read, James Barber and I just found a Cattle Egret in a field west of
Kingston. It can disappear quite easily in the long grass.

Directions: from Napanee go east on Hwy 2 about 9 km. The bird is in a
field with cattle on north side of the road immediately east of NUMBER
6839, which is between Morvin and Storms Corners.

[Ontbirds] European Greenfinch , Étienne Brule park, Toronto

2014-11-02 Thread John Carley
For those interested in exotica, a European Greenfinch was seen at 10 am today
in the company of a male and female house finch, a song sparrow and three
cardinals.
The greenfinch was seen in the brush and shrubs at the edge and on the slope to
the northeast of the paved cycling trail north of the Catherine street parking
lot on the east side of the Humber river in étienne brûlé park.
The bird was seen at a point even with the first weir north of Catherine street.
Étienne Brule park is north of Bloor St. West and Old mill Rd. In Toronto.
From Old mill road, cross the Catherine street bridge going east and turn north
to descend into the parking lot. there is a lot of construction about which may
necessitate parking on the west side of the river.
Cheers
John Carley
