Weather: Overcast through the day. Winds were much calmer (5km/h) than the past while, which made it a little easier for keeping warm. North winds were also a very welcome change! Raptor Observations: Red-shouldered Hawks, Red-tailed Hawks, and Northern Harriers all put in a good showing today, coming through in small bunches of up to 5 or 6 birds at a time. One lonely Turkey Vulture, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk and 2 Cooper's Hawks gave a little more variety to the day. Having the birds fly overhead rather than across the far north edge of the marsh was another welcome change. Non-raptor Observations: A thin layer of ice across most of the marsh kept a lot of waterfowl away, with Mallards, Canada Geese, Tundra and Mute Swans being seen flying by. One large murder of crows announced their presence before showing up over the treeline and making their way in a big cloud across the marsh. American Pipits, Pine Siskins, and American Goldfinches also filtered across the tower as the day went on. See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S20693583 Predictions: -1C with NW winds in the morning and 2C with west winds and some flurries in the afternoon. [Ontbirds] Townsend's Solitaire - south of Peterborough
I noticed that no one has posted anything about the Townsend’s Solitaire south of Peterborough today. Ian Cannell and I saw the bird at 9:15 am and again between 10:00 am and 10:15 am and later as we passed the same area about twenty minutes or so later we were told that the bird was being seen again. It was found each time at the tip of the tall deciduous trees to the left or behind the house and for us the second time it flew to the Mountain Ash trees just inside the property. It actually came to the first tree just inside the property, great close up looks. We then took a drive north and west of the area and found 4 Northern Shrikes, a juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker at Uphill at the north end of Hwy 35 (Victoria Road) north of Kirkfield, Rough-legged Hawks, 68 Turkeys, Ravens, and many Cedar Waxwings. On the way home we found 3 Snowy Owls so it looks like they may be on their way like last winter. or not. Directions per Martin Parker From Peterborough - take Peterborough County Road #28 south through the hamlet of Bailieboro.- Hannah Road is the first left south of Bailieboro. Follow Hannah Road to the first intersection, Evertson Rd. The location with the Townsend's Solitaire was just west on this intersection on both sides of the road. From Port Hope - take Northumberland County Rod #28 north from Port Hope. Hannah Road is a right turn after one passes the two entrances to Bewdley and the western end of Rice Lake. One on Hannah Rd see the instruction above. Norm Murr Richmond Hill Ontario, Canada You can't see birds if you don't go out but sit and wait for others to find them. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Brambling- North Bay
Dick Tafel and I surprisingly saw a Brambling on McIntyre Street West this afternoon around 2 pm. The owner of the home where we saw it says it has been around his property since this morning. It is feeding on sunflower seeds on the ground, often with a large flock of Evening Grosbeaks, but sometimes by itself. The owner says those who want to see it can view it in his yard at the side of his house. However, because he has tenants, the driveway cannot be blocked. Park on the other side of the street or elsewhere near the home. The home is located at 1025 McIntyre Street West, on the left side at the end of McIntyre Street West, just after crossing Cormack Street. I was able to take some photos through a glassed screened door. If you want to see a photo, please email me directly. [Ontbirds] Yes Eurasian Tree Sparrow. Niagara-on-the-Lake, again today 10. To 10:35 am
The tree sparrow is still being seen at Craig Corcoran's front feeders, see address below. Video taken. On behalf of the "passionate" birding community, I would like to thank Craig and his family, Gerry Shemilt, for being so patient with impatient birders/listers., that even leave very expensive Swarowski scopes behind!! The discovery of this bird is a lovely touching story of pure SEREDEMPITY or coincidences Craig daughter is visiting from one of the southern states and Grandma Gerry Shemilt, long standing birder from Toronto, visit her in Niagara-on-the-lakeso Craig puts out some extra feed at the front feeders, and ... Granddaughter, from usa, says granma there a different bird at the feeders, grandma looks and lo and behold..Eurasian Tree Sparrow is discovered! What a nice story...well done Gerry, Craig. And granddaughter.. To all of you thank you. Between 10:02 and 10:35, the bird showed at least a dozen times. Still very skittish. Video and pics taken Best run, I am baby sitting! [Ontbirds] Northern shrike@Rondeau Prov PArk
We have had a northern shrike in the yard for two days now. He seems to be working a territory along the cottages north of the visitor centre. The Park is closed to the public today, Wednesday, but will be open again tomorrow. Our cottage is 17372 Lakeshore. and birders are welcome. When you come in the yard check the roadside feeder area first then slowly go around the left side of the cottage to see if it is in one of the trees or the hedge. Take exit 101 off the 401 and follow the signs for Rondeau Provincial Park. Once in the park go to Lakeshore Rd. The bird may also be visiting the feeders at the visitor centre which is just south of our place. Just seen at 11.50am.
