[Ontbirds] Correction Re: Dowitchers at Downsview Park, Toronto

2017-05-07 Thread Elias Takacs via ONTBIRDS
Hi everyone, just wanted to send a correction to my original post regarding
Dowitchers at Downsview Park. With the help of Jean Iron and Ron Pittaway,
I was able to confirm the ID of these birds to be Long-billed Dowitchers.
I apologize for the misidentification. I did not see them after they flew
off around 11:30am. Will check again tomorrow.

[Ontbirds] OFO Trip - Leslie Street Spit (May 6)

2017-05-07 Thread Gavin Platt via ONTBIRDS
7 birders braved the forecasted poor weather yesterday to look for birds at
the Leslie St Spit in Toronto. The weather ended up cooperating (no rain).
Although it was a little slow, we still managed a good mix of birds.
Highlights included an American Bittern, 2 Short-billed Dowitchers, nice
looks at an early Semipalmated Sandpiper, a Red-throated Loon and 2
cooperative Cape May Warblers.

Hopefully the weather will be a little better in September for the fall
Toronto Islands OFO trip.

Good Birding,

[Ontbirds] White Pelicans North Bay area

2017-05-07 Thread Richard Tafel via ONTBIRDS
There were 4 White Pelicans accompanying hundreds of cormorants (and Tree
Swallows) along the southerly shore of Cache Bay this aft. Cache Bay is some
30 miles west of North Bay, which in turn is 3 1/2 uninterrupted hours north of
Toronto. The bay itself is at the south end of the town, and the look-out
point is at the westerly end of a line of boathouses along the bay shore.

[Ontbirds] Migrant Ruff off Thickson's Woods - May 7

2017-05-07 Thread Glenn Coady via ONTBIRDS
Ontbirds subscribers,

Some lake watching off Thickson's Woods today produced a rufous morph male Ruff
migrating west past Thickson's Woods in a flock with 16 Lesser Yellowlegs and 3
Short-billed Dowitchers at 4:50 p.m. The flock was headed west out over the
lake and eventually lost to sight behind Thickson Point. I thought I should
post so that people to the west would check their local shorebird spots to see
if they have stopped anywhere else in Durham or further on.

Large numbers of Red-breasted Mergansers were also moving and a new influx of
Barn Swallows were all over the bay looking quite confused by the weather.

Looks like frost will hit out here in Durham Region overnight - it will be
interesting to see whether it triggers any reverse migrants.

Thickson Bay and Thickson Point can be accessed at the southern terminus of
Thickson Road South (from exit 412 on Hwy 401) via the Waterfront Trail
westward from the cul-de-sac.

Grimsby, ON - Beamer Conservation Area information may be found at:
http://www.niagarapeninsulahawkwatch.org/

Site Description:
Hawk migration monitoring at the Beamer Memorial Conservation Area in
Grimsby, Ontario is conducted by the Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch (NPH). All
counting is done by volunteers. Not all members are counters nor does a
counter have to be a member. Typically one person is the designated counter
for each day but other observers present assist with the spotting and
identification. Counting is done from a steel observation tower with a
wooden floor. For wind protection on cold days, particularly in March, a
black plastic wind guard is installed around the tower's platform. This
platform easily accommodates ten people but on most busy days, no more than
five or six observers would be on it.

The site lies within a publicly accessible property owned by the Niagara
Peninsula Conservation Authority. There is no charge for admittance. The
tower stands in the centre of a mowed area with a gravel ring road near the
outer edge. This provides lots of room to park vehicles (along the road)
and set up lawn chairs, telescopes and cameras. Toilet facilities are
present. During the counting season, the NPH erect a counting board to
display seven day's worth of observation data for the public. The box
enclosing the sign contains brochures and silhouette sheets for the public
as well as bulletin boards with news and historical sighting records.

Directions to site:
To get to Beamer CA, take the QEW to Exit 71/72, follow Christie
St./Mountain St. to the top of the escarpment, turn right on Ridge Road
West, and go 1.6km to Quarry Rd. Turn right on Quarry Rd. and drive 100m to
the conservation area. Parking is normally available inside the park. If
parking at the entrance or on the roads, do NOT leave valuables in your
car.

Please note: Data in this report is not official until reviewed and finalized
after the end of the season. ©2017 Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch

[Ontbirds] Migration Update: Point Pelee National Park, May 7, 2017

2017-05-07 Thread Festival of Birds via ONTBIRDS
Sunny skies were a welcome sight this morning and many birders converged on the
Park to see what the change in weather would bring. Light winds earlier last
night seemed to facilitate movement.

A total of 15 warbler species have been reported so far today. A CONNECTICUT
WARBLER was reported from the bike path between Sleepy and Dunes. The bird was
not vocalizing. An AUDUBON'S YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was reported from the north
end of the seasonal footpath in Tilden Woods; there are several Yellow-rumped
Warblers feeding in the sloughs so it's worth a close look at every bird. A
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen at the Cactus Field on one of the early morning
Friends of Point Pelee hikes, and a second bird was also present, along with a
HOODED WARBLER in the same area. As well a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER.

In other bird groups, a WHITE-EYED VIREO was heard and seen on the Botham Loop
of Woodland Nature Trail, and a TUFTED TITMOUSE was seen from Bridge A. At the
very Tip, ~200 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 100 DUNLIN regaled Friends of Point
Pelee hike participants as they circled over the rocks there. A CLAY-COLORED
SPARROW was seen on Woodland Nature Trail by the south end of Redbud. A LEAST
BITTERN was heard off the Shuster Trail today.

[Ontbirds] Painted Bunting Update

2017-05-07 Thread Ken Fuller via ONTBIRDS
The Painted Bunting at 22262 Hwy. 41 in Denbigh has likely left. It was
last spotted once on Saturday, May 6 in the early morning. The weather in
Denbigh has been bad (consistent rain and snow), and might have contributed
to the bird leaving.
