[Ontbirds] Yellow-Crowned Night Heron- River Canard
Refound the yellow-crowned night heron this morning Sept. 12 around 10- 11:00 am. Spotted flying up river from the rail road bridge. Then spotted from south shore(I.e. looking across river) right across from river canard park. The bird was standing on some rocks fishing on the north shore right at river canard park in between the floating fishing platform and observation deck. Park behind baseball diamonds by boat launch and walk east down gravel path along the river. Go past the fishing platform and turn right walk to rocks on shoreline and look east right before the small observation deck. The bird is fairly hard to spot ( i.e. drab colour and very thin profile) and is moving around quite a bit. It's also hard to see the bird from the shore he is on due to the grasses. Best to spot from opposite shore first I think. A kayak would be even better for searching. Good Luck! Re: [Ontbirds] Common Nighthawks at Ruthven National Historic Site
Greetings all: While conducting vegetation surveys I spotted 11 Nighthawks foraging over Ruthven around 4:30 pm today. They were traveling in a group heading east over the Grand River. To get to Ruthven take Highway #3 to Cayuga. Turn north onto Highway #54 and continue driving several kilometers to the entrance of Ruthven. Turn left and drive to the parking lot at the back. There is a bird banding station run by Rick Ludkin of Haldimand Bird Observatory as well. George from Ohio was interested in learning raptor ID. Several local residents spent some time on the tower along with John and Ron, from Mississauga area later in the day. Bob Hall-Brooks, Dave Martin and Linda Waldarski spent a couple of hours each and Jim McCoy helped for most of the afternoon. Thank you everyone. Weather: It was a perfect day for hawk watching. The sun was warm, the winds were NNE to N all day and there was excellent wispy cloud cover for the background. Raptor Observations: 12 species were observed today including a light adult Swainson's Hawk. Many thanks to Jim who questioned the 'larger' hawk kettling with the BWs. The flight lines were challenging as birds were blown out onto Lake Erie, powering their way across the marsh over the tower, and winging west in the northern skies. At one point we had BWs flowing directly south and crossing the flight paths of other migrating raptors. Non-raptor Observations: A much more quiet day today. See our non-raptor report at http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S39149236 Predictions: Yuck - east winds in the morning and south in the afternoon. But at least the sun will be shining - could be worse. [Ontbirds] Yellow-headed Blackbird and Buff-Br Sandpiper at Presqu'ile
Hi all, Ron Tozer and I went out to Gull Island (Presqu’ile Prov. Park) this morning and relocated the Yellow-headed Blackbird found by David Bree yesterday. I think it is a female (most resembles figure 54h on plate 24 of the new world blackbird guide). It was sitting up on dead plant stalks on the south and west end of the pond on Gull Is. We did not see the Rn Phalarope that David had there yesterday. We did see a juv. Buff-breasted Sandpiper feeding with a Golden and 2 Bb Plover along the north side of the island, as well as a juv. Sb Dowitcher and Wilson’s Snipe at the pond. Other notable birds included 11 Greater Scaup, an immature Common Tern (scarce locally now), and a dark billed swan that keeps evading good looks and has variously been identified as Tundra and Trumpeter. It certainly is a perplexing bird being obviously smaller than the adjacent Mutes but with what looks like a heavier bill structure than would be expected in Tundra. If anyone can get good photos of this bird, please do! As David indicated yesterday, the wade over to Gull Island is about waist deep at the deepest point but the substrate is firm gravel or sand and quite easy. On a calm day the bottom can be easily seen. It was calm today with no current but it could be tricky in waves or wind so I recommend using the buddy system in those conditions.
