[Ontbirds] Reddish Egret

2018-08-26 Thread M Pickup via ONTBIRDS

The Reddish Egret is still being seen at Oliphant this afternoon at
3:30 pm.
My wife and I saw the bird fly in and land and then proceeded to
do it’s feeding ritual in a shallow area.
Travel along the shore road to the north end along the gravel portion.
There is a small parking lot where there is a private property sign.
It is just to the north of this area in the shallows and grasses about
50 or 60 feet farther to the north.

[Ontbirds] LONG-TAILED JAEGERS in the Gt. Lakes..

2018-08-26 Thread Alf Rider via ONTBIRDS
While in CHURCHILL, MANITOBA , I noticed LONG-TAIiLED JAEGERS leaving the area
on 17th of June. They were climbing high and heading South.

Since then They have been sighted at K.Pt. during nice weather flying past
Kettle Point about 15 feet above the water and dipping down to pick up items of
interest of them from the water surface. around that date.
It might be a useful gambit to look at the Gt Lakes on nice days in and after
mid June to casually look out over the water to see if any Long-tails are
around.

Wishing Everyone 'Good birding'

Sorry, not sure last post went through. As below, Swallow-tailed Kite has been
hunting for past couple hours in same general place as yesterday (corner of
12th Concession and 12/13 Sideroad). I believe 12/13 SR is road east of
Klondike.

[Ontbirds] Western Sandpiper

2018-08-26 Thread Rick Eckley via ONTBIRDS
Jean Iron and I just saw the Western at Presquile. It’s at Owen Point, lookout
5. Peregrines keep scaring the flock it’s in and it keeps returning. It’s
close, but patience is required to separate it from the Semipalms.

Presquile P P is near Brighton. Take the 401 and head south to the lake.

2018-08-26 Thread Frank Pinilla (gmail) via ONTBIRDS
5 peep species at Owen Point today with multiples of Baird’s, a couple of
White-rumps and the Western. Nice long decurved bill, bright rufous scaps
showing next to the folded wing, came quite close for some good photos. At
least one possibly two Peregrines patrolling the beach and putting the birds up
regularly. Watched it catch a shorebird out on Gull Island. Also a Red Knot out
on the island as well.

Directions to the Park below in Jon’s email.

[Ontbirds] Snowy Egret near Rondeau Sunday

2018-08-26 Thread Steve Charbonneau via ONTBIRDS
Hi everyone,
The snowy egret that I found Friday at Keith McLean’s Conservation Area is
still present in the area but is moving around quite a bit. Yesterday, two
observers had it land for 10 minutes or so in the conservation area but it
wasn’t seen otherwise. Today, I found it with 8 great egrets on the mud in the
northwest corner of the bay. I was scoping them from Rondeau Joe’s restaurant,
just outside Rondeau Park. Eventually, the flock flew SW to the community of
Rondeau Estates where they landed on the rocky point at the bend of Marine Park
Drive. I got photos when I drove there and Keith Burk was able to get there in
time to see it. Fisherman flushed them and they flew a ways along the shoreline
to the SW where they are still visible from Rondeau Estates. Unfortunately,
this is a long ways away and a powerful scope is necessary.
There isn’t much public parking in Rondeau Estates but it might be worth
checking there for this bird. Hopefully it goes back to the Conservation Area
where it was originally found.
Directions:
Rondeau Estates Line is about a km from the end of Kent Bridge Rd. Turn right,
follow it to Marine Park Drive, turn left and go to the bay. Keith McLean
Conservation Area is a few hundred metres past Rondeau Estates Line on the
left. Look for the sign and parking area. Follow the walking trail along the
bean field to the corn field. Wetland to the east.
Rondeau Joe’s is on the right side of the road just before you enter Rondeau
Park. Lots of parking here. Scope the opposite shoreline.
Good luck,
Steve
