[Ontbirds] CORRECTION: No Ring-necked Duck (Windsor)
Since yesterday, Josh Vandermeulen has gone over some diagnostic points with reference to my duck photo and helped me reach the conclusion that this was a female Redhead, not Ring-necked Duck. I apologize to anyone inconvenienced by this mis-identification. [Ontbirds] Ring-necked Duck - Little River (Windsor)
I never know what I'm going to see on a given day on the Little River from my deck, as the pollution control plant keeps this waterway open and unfrozen all winter. Right now there is a female Ring-necked Duck swimming around with the 25 or so Mallards. Two days ago a small group of Hooded Mergansers came in. More interesting ducks tend to hang closer to the pollution control plant but can be seen with a scope from my deck. The Black-crowned Night Herons (2) are seen almost nightly coming in to roost on the far shore. The feeders are currently hosting 6 Red-winged Blackbirds, a large number of Eastern Juncos and American Goldfinch, both nuthatches, Red-bellied Woodpecker, American Tree Sparrows, two Downy Woodpeckers and other expected feeder birds. Directions: Mine is the fifth driveway south of Wyandotte on the east side of Riverdale Avenue. If you wish to come, please park behind my black VW or behind the shed (but not in my downstairs neighbour's spot or behind her red car) and come quietly around back and up the deck steps. 519-564-6945. [Ontbirds] Pine Siskins (Windsor)
Hello, I'm not sure if this is worthy of Ontbirds as this is my first year to have feeders in Windsor. Currently there are between 15 and 25 Pine Siskins at my two nyger feeders and one black-oil sunflower feeder. With AMGO, DOWO and both nuthatches, it's quite a feeding frenzy out there. Anyone in the area who has never had a chance to photograph or have a nice view of Siskins is welcome to drop by. The address is 836 RIVERDALE AVE, which is just south of the intersection of Wyandotte East and RIVERDALE Ave. If coming via Riverside Drive, turn south at the Lighthouse/marina. Come up Riverdale past Menard's Seafood restaurant and to the light at Wyandotte. Cross Wyandotte and it's the fifth driveway on the left. Park behind my black VW and come around to the back (upper duplex) but walk quietly as you come up the back deck steps so as not to frighten them all away. If coming from the E.C. Row, take the Lauzon Road north exit. Turn right onto Tecumseh Rd. East. Turn left onto Lauzon Road (MacDonald's will be on your right). Turn right onto McHugh. Take the first left, which is Darfield. At the end of that short block, go RIGHT onto Little River Acres Drive. Follow it around and it will spit you out onto my street, Riverdale Ave. Continue northward until you are almost at the intersection with Wyandotte. Mine is a gravel driveway on the right (there is a little boat parked in my neighbour's yard). Park behind my VW and come around back but walk quietly as you come up the back deck steps to the upper duplex. [Ontbirds] Black-crowned Night Heron (Windsor)
A Black-crowned Night Heron flew over and circled the Lakeview Park Marina at dusk tonight. The marina is at the intersection of Riverdale and Riverside Drive East. It is directly across from Peche Island. You can get to the marina by taking the Manning Road exit from the 401. Go north on Manning until you reach Riverside (you can't go any farther north or you'll be in the Detroit River). Turn left/west on Riverside and travel until you come to the light house. [Ontbirds] Black-crowned Night Heron - Riverside Marina, Windsor
At 8:30 p.m. we observed an adult Black-crowned Night Heron fly into Riverside Marina with a dozen or more barn swallows in hot pursuit. The heron spent quite some time perched atop posts and snooping around the piers, presumably looking for swallow nests to raid. After about 20 minutes, the swallows convinced it to move on. Kelly Morrissey and Sylvain Cote The marina is on Riverside Drive East at Riverdale. If coming from the 401, take the Manning Road exit south, follow Manning to Riverside; go west on Riverside to Riverdale. There is a lighthouse at the entrance. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Blackburnian, Magnolia, etc., Ganatchio Trail, Windsor
I returned last night, this a.m. at 7:30 and this evening to the area of the Ganatchio Trail where the new extension heads south toward Centennial Pond. I have not been able to re-locate the Cape May. Last evening: male and female Magnolia Warbler, a few Warbling Vireos, and Chestnut-sided Warbler. A single Great Egret flew over. This morning between 7:00 and 7:45 at the end of the parking lot where Florence intersects Riverside Drive East in the tangle and underbrush near the green trash bin, another birder G. Peltier and I sighted Black-throated Green Warbler (singing and in view), Blackburnian Warbler, probable female Hooded Warbler, male and female Magnolia Warbler. This evening between 6:00 and 8:30, Sylvain Cote and I found male and female Bay-breasted Warbler, possible female Connecticut Warbler, Philadelphia and Warbling Vireos, and Chestnut-sided Warbler. The resident Bald Eagle is seen in this area almost every evening as it returns from the lake. The locals are also busy: Yellow Warbler, Red-winged Blackbirds, Grey Catbirds and Baltimore Orioles can all be seen engaging in mating and nesting activities. The area can be accessed via Riverside Drive East, park in the Sand Point Beach parking lot. [Ontbirds] Cape May, Blackpoll and more, Ganatchio Trail, Windsor
A singing, actively foraging Cape May Warbler was right off the Ganatchio Trail in Windsor when I arrived at noon. It was still there when I left at 2:00 p.m. I was birding the area across from Sand Point where there is some playground equipment and a sign announcing the Carolinian Arboretum. Just a few paces south of that sign is some playground equipment and behind that is a grouping of 3 tall conifers, one (slash?) pine and two ? The Cape May was sticking to the two other conifers, singing and giving great views. Continuing along the Little River extension there are willows and other deciduous trees, where I found Blackpoll, Palm, and Chestnut-sided within my first 10 minutes looking. Imagine what it must have been like at dawn! This park can be accessed from Riverside Drive and you can park in the Sand Point Beach parking lot. [Ontbirds]Many migrants this morning at Ojibway Park (Windsor)
Hi, this is my first post so I hope I do it right. We are one beginning birder and one rusty birder, so I know many migrants around us during our 1-hour stroll this morning at Ojibway Nature Area starting at 9 a.m. went unidentified, however we did get Rose-breasted Grosbeak, many Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Chestnut-sided Warbler, a Hooded Warbler, and an Eastern Towhee singing at the very top of a tree in the sunshine. I heard White-throated sparrow as well. About five other species we were not able to pin down: about 3 other warblers and possibly vireos. The morning was cool but sunny and bird activity was just amazing. A passerby claimed that the rufous-phase screech owl peeked out of its nesting box (box in middle of creek by road), but we did not get to witness that. To get to the Ojibway Nature Area, take the Matchette Rd exit off the EC Row as depicted in this map http://www.ojibway.ca/map.htm. Happy birding.
