[Ontbirds] Black-bellied Whistling Duck Pelee area new location
The Whistling Duck which went missing for a few days and was previously seen near Hillman Marsh and Leamington Harbor has turned up at a new location which I believe it hasn’t been seen before at the Sturgeon Creek Marina which is accessed as you drive south from Leamington towards Point Pelee along Bevel Line Road. The marina is accessed across the street from Monarch Lane and Bevel Line Road at the Happy Snapper restaurant. Drive past the restaurant and towards the docked boats and listen for the Whistling Duck as it’s been calling frequently and handing around with about 35 Mallards. [Ontbirds] One Black-bellied Whistling Duck at Leamington Marina now
Mi amigo, Victor M Serrano has just turned up another Black-bellied Whistling Duck which is likely the same bird Dean Ware found a few days ago but had since went missing. The bird is showing now at the Leamington Marina (where the boats are docked, not the beach side) which is at the south end of Erie Street at the south side of town at the lake. Nice find Victor! [Ontbirds] 9 Black-bellied Whistling Ducks YES June 19th at Wheatley
I just noticed a Facebook post to Ontario Rare Bird Alert that Xander Campbell saw the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks again tonight at 7:30pm and no other reports other than this evening reappearance that I heard of. They were in the same location, seen in trees at Muddy Creek across from Cavendish Factory in Wheatley, Essex County, Deer Run Rd a couple kilometres south of Wheatley. We have a big rain front moving in tonight out of the south west so perhaps it will hold them in another day and will be seen again tomorrow. [Ontbirds] Mississippi Kite at Point Pelee
Around 9:50am several of us were standing at the extreme tip and Paul Pratt first called out the bird as it was flying low just above the trees as we were looking north. We didn't see it long enough to tell the age of the bird. It was also seen by Alan Wormington, et al. Lindsey Vallient, Graham Sorenson, Kristina Hick and I had it again at 11:10 flying north over Sparrow Field with photos obtained but will need to look later on the computer to age the bird. [Ontbirds] "Audubon's" Yellow-rumped Warbler at Point Pelee
I just came across the adult male Audubon's Warbler about 50 meters south of the solar panel along the west beach foot path at the tip of Pelee, it was alone at the top of the large Elm tree adjacent to the bench. The bird then flew east just as 500+ joggers started their 2h marathon which will end at noon when you'll be able to drive and theoretically park in the tip parking lot but it will likely be full so perhaps plan to be dropped off or just walk down the west beach foot path from the visitors center. Fewer birds around today then yesterday which was "jammin" but no doubt there's still something else good around! Happy Spring, good luck! The Bewick's Swan flew over my head toward the onion fields but I have not been able to relocate it as yet. [Ontbirds] Bewick's Tundra Swan at Point Pelee YES...
I've just come across the Bewick's Tundra Swan as previously seen yesterday in the onion fields at Point Pelee. The bird is now sitting on the edge of the ice in Lake Erie about 400 meters from shore adjacent to east beach road about a kilometre south of the Hillman marsh parking lot with around 500 Tundra Swans. A scope is required. The bird was positive identified as the "penny faced" Bewick's Swan and this is the fourth record of Bewick's Swan for Ontario and the first for Point Pelee. This could easily be split into a new species for North America as its already recognized as a separate species in Europe. It's likely this bird will move back into the onion fields soon to feed so I will repost if it changes position. There are also thousands of migrant ducks around and it's quite a spectacle to see but I haven't seen the Ross's Goose as yet but will post if I come across it. Come enjoy! [Ontbirds] Fwd: Juvenile Laughing Gull at Point Pelee...
Just came across a juv Laughing Gull hahaha! (sorry couldn't resist) at the north end of west cranberry pond in the Pelee marsh best accessed via kayak or canoe (it's a long swim! ;) Also some clarification for those interested in the marsh paddle for the sept 28-29th OFO annual general meeting led by myself and Kory Renaud is it is nescessary to either bring your own kayak/canoe and mandatory safety gear or you can rent one at Pelee Wings nature store or the friends of Point Pelee marsh rentals. It would be wise to reserve in advance as they can sell out quickly. We will not be going out with any hint of rain or high winds. Conditions in the marsh r good to excellent right now for backwards binocular views ;) of typically 12 or sometime more shorebird species, and something fancy is always possible as I've seen 31 shorebird species total now in the marsh! Also herons, Sandhills cranes, lots o ducks and lots of cormorants and sometimes intersting mammals like muskrats, beavers and raccoons chasing cormorants! We can also get lucky on a rail or two, marsh wrens and even bobolinks! Also for the herpatopogists in you we sometimes get blandings turtles, snappin turtles and painted turkles ;) and bullfrogs! Micheal watched it at close range for several minutes before it flew south towards Pelee. Mike and Debora had Pelee's first record of Fork-tailed in the yard in December 2004 alive the first day and found deceased the next and Mike does know what one looks like. He described it very well and when I asked if he was sure it wasn't Scissor-tailed he adamantly described the bird as having mostly black above and all white below with a long forked tail. Unfortunately I didn't receive Mikes voicemail until 10pm last night and couldn't access the internet until now. If it's still around the bird could be re-found in the tip area or along East or West Beach or even in the Onion Fields where the last record of Fork-tailed occurred in 2008. East Beach Road is accessed by driving east on concession road "C" off of Point Pelee Drive (road to the park gates entrance). Good luck! [Ontbirds] Ash-throated Flycatcher, Point Pelee update...
As of 1:30pm today the Ash-throated Flycatcher has not been refound despite careful searching in the tip area, some of West Beach and Delaurier. The original observer was Henrietta O'Neill (the tram driver) and then refound and identified by Alan Wormington and Kevin McLaughlin yesterday near the solar panel, west side tip footpath. Perhaps it will show up again somewhere soon. Cheers, Steve Pike ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds]Spotted Towhee, Point Pelee National Park (and photos)...
This morning at 9:30am I was lucky to re-find the Spotted Towhee Alan Wormington discovered yesterday morning along the west side of the road to the tip roughly adjacent to Sparrow Field. The bird was rather hard to see and only briefly popped up for short views, in fact others tried yesterday for I believe a couple of hours without luck. I've posted a photo at: http://stevepike.com/rarities.html And also submitted the image to the OFO rarities page at: http://www.ofo.ca/photoalbums/current/index.html Good luck to any who try, Steve Pike ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds]A quick note about re-finding the Fork-tailed...
The bird had flown North from concession D towards concession C, landing in an isolated woodlot between concessions. Two birders attempted to re-find the bird first asking permission to walk the lane way to where we believed the bird had flown. Without knowing another house was located exactly where I figured it ended up but the property owner was annoyed with their presence on their property and threatened to call the police for trespassing even before they had a chance to ask for permission. Do not attempt to re-find the bird on private property, we're hoping it will re-appear tomorrow along the road on concession D where it was sheltered and seemed content with clear, close unobstructed views. [Ontbirds]FISH CROW, Point Pelee National Park...
At 8:30am, myself and Julie Liptak saw and heard 2 Fish Crow's flying south directly above the main vehicle road directly opposite Sparrow Field. The birds called 5 or 6 times consecutively and returned 5 minutes later heading NNE, calling all the while. Keith Sealy (sp?) not more than 5mins before was describing 2 birds he heard and saw at post 16 on the Woodland Nature Trail the previous day (May 7th) advising me they were around and to watch for them...haha! In my astonishment, sure enough here they were! The birds were finally relocated again by the Borrelle (sp??...same guys that found the Burrowing Owl on Pelee Is.) brothers and their father at the cemetery at 11:58am. Thanks Keith, I believed you before ever seeing them!! Steve and Julie. Sorry no directions to PPNP, totally fried and need to be up again at 5:30am...lol. [Ontbirds]Mottled Duck, Hillman Marsh photos...
I've uploaded 3 images of the Mottled Duck here... http://stevepike.com/rarities.html All necessary field marks of a non-crossed wild Mottled Duck appear obvious in my opinion. We heard and saw this drake calling and did not see any leg bands what-so-ever. The images will be forwarded to the Ontario Rare Birds Record Committee for further review including Dean's written documentation. Thanks again Dean for another exciting bird! [Ontbirds]Mottled Duck, photos...
At 8:30pm tonight the Mottled Duck returned briefly to the Shorebird cell at Hillman Marsh. Dean Ware and I walked back around the long way and carefully peeked over the dyke without flushing the bird (birds) and were able to get a couple of good images in flight and sitting that I'll post tomorrow. The bird is still returning I think almost every day so far and was seen early in the AM (from around 6:15-7:30 I heard today) and in the late PM, anywhere from 7:45-8:45pm. It usually flies in from the South-West and lands in the SW corner of the Shorebird cell accompanied with the hybrid Black X Wood Duck and drake Mallard. We heard it calling as well before it flew of with his hybrid friend that Dean believes is going to roost in the Marsh. Birding was great at Pelee today, a big change from the last few days...2 X male Pro Warbler's, Cerulean, Kentucky, Louisiana Waterthrush including 7 different male Golden-winged I had heard about. [Ontbirds]BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER at POINT PELEE...
Hello listers et al, I just received a phone call from Alan Wormington at 10:05 am. Alan has discovered a female Black-throated Gray Warbler at the tip at Point Pelee. The bird was the only Warbler there and was seen along the seasonal trail just South of the board walk in the large Grape vine thicket 1/2 way down the center of that trail. >From the train stop pavilion take the boardwalk South until it splits (boardwalk heads West to West Beach) take the South path due South approx. 10 meters until you see the entrance of the seasonal trail on your right. Walk that trail another 20-30 meters till you reach the big Grape Vine thicket on your right (or West). Going to try for photos now, will advise there after. Listers...et al, I have posted Robert Horvath's photo of the Lark Sparrow seen on April 5th. and 6th. at Little River in Windsor by Robert and his brother Randy. Enjoy, Steve Pike. -Congratulations to Robert on his 1st. rarity photo that he digi-"scoped" thru his BINOCULARS! directions... The best way to find Little River is to take either Wyandotte street East or Riverside Drive East from lauzon to a street called Riverdale go South on Riverdale to the first street past Wyandotte and make a left over the little bridge park in the lot at the base of the big hill you will see a cement asphalt path follow that south to the very end where you will run into the VIA railroad tracks you will now see a big open area to the East of the path once you see a flooded part of the field with a rise just to the East of it you will be in the right vicinity the bird seems to like three different areas in close proximity to the water the hilly area right along the Eastern edge of the water, a small ditch that runs East to West parallel to the VIA tracks around a big steel culvert section and in the grass and hilly area between the small ditch and the railroad tracks. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Today at 10:30am I refound the Bohemian Waxwing on the West side of the main road across from the Blue Heron Picnic area. Hello again, overcast and rainy conditions made for a less than ideal photo opportunity...I however managed to take a obviously less than stellar image of the Varied Thrush www.stevepike.com , rarities section (blue link button on the homepage). The bird was seen very briefly (approx. 45min. max), around 8:30 till 9:20am then vanished to the East (Ander's footpath or the cemetary?) untill at least 11:30am or later and perhaps not at all there after. The Bohemian Waxwing was refound by myself and Matt Baker at 11am along the Ander's footpath (the old road to the vistor's center) approx. 1/2 between the old cemetary and the Delaurier house with a flock of 30 Cedar Waxwings. As well he has also reported the Black-necked Stilt and Hudsonian Godwit at the Ridgetown sewage lagoons at 7:10am (Nov. 14th.) As a side note, I was informed that some viewers of the Black-necked Stilt photos (see www.stevepike.com , RARITIES link) were not loading up on slower 56k and 128k dial-up connections. I have now fixed this technical problem and the photos are available for all. ...the site is best viewed at a 1024 x 768 screen resolution at a 32 bit color quality. Cheers, Steve Pike.
