[Ontbirds] Orange crowned warbker, peregrine falcon - Humber bay Easr, toronto

2017-12-03 Thread alvo via ONTBIRDS
The O.C. Warbler was on the small hill next to (just south) the small bridge a
bit east of main parking lot. Superb views. Seen at 12 noon.
Just before that, a peregrine was feasting on a pigeon near eastern tip of
park. Was on a tree stump 15 feet high, providing exceptional views.
From Lakeshore, go south at Parkland Rd. and park at main lot. Good birding.

[Ontbirds] YH blackbirds, cattle egret, least bittern, etc. - Angler's Road, Near Mitchell's Bay - NOW

2018-05-11 Thread alvo via ONTBIRDS
For YH blackbird and Cattle Egret, go to end of Angler's Line, turn left on
Richmond, and view on grass from Vincent's Guide Service sign.  At least 2
males (just flew off) and two females (still here now). The Cattle Egret is
behind the log cabin.
The Least Bittern was heard once from Angler's Line about 300 metres from end
of road. Also in same area, heard one Pied Billed Grebe and 2 Moorhens (and saw
one). A number of Foresters Terns in the area too.

[Ontbirds] King Eider - Col. Sam Smith Park - Etobicoke

2017-03-17 Thread Jack Alvo via ONTBIRDS
The long-staying King Eider (1st winter male) is still present. If you're
looking for it for your first time (as I did today), it will help you to
know that it is in the harbour - not the open water. You need to walk around
to the south side of the harbour. It is congregating with a bunch of
mallards and is often very close to shore.

Other nice birds there today were 3 male Ring-Necked Ducks (in the open
water to the east), a number of Red Necked Grebes (spring plumage), and a
Snowy Owl who, while sitting on the dock, was literally being dive-bombed by
very noisy crows. (I felt sorry for the owl). Hordes of ducks in the open
water, including large numbers of Common Goldeneye.

Directions: Col. Sam Smith Park is at the bottom of Kipling Avenue in
Toronto.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Shorebirds at Ashbridge's Bay

2017-08-10 Thread Jack Alvo via ONTBIRDS
Since there haven't been any Ontbird updates regarding Ashbridge's Bay, I'm
enclosing a link to my ebird post of Tuesday.
http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist/S38550648

Shorebirding at Ashbridge's is terrific this year in spite of all the human
activity (beach-goers, volleyball). The birds seem content to feed despite
people walking right by. Highlight for us (Ivor Williams and myself) were
close-up views of a Pectoral Sandpiper. We also saw SP Plover (2), Spotted
and Least Sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs and a few Sanderlings. Another
birder said he had seen a White-Rumped SP but wasn't able to re-locate it.

Good Birding!

[Ontbirds] Two Fox Sparrows - High Park, Toronto

2017-12-26 Thread Jack Alvo via ONTBIRDS
Fox Sparrow was reported earlier this month at High Park, Toronto. Today I
was pleasantly surprised to find not 1 but 2 in same area.

Directions: High Park is at Keele and Bloor Street in Toronto. Take Colborne
Lodge Dr. south from Bloor Street, turn left (east) on Spring Rd. At bottom
of hill the road turns south and then flattens out. Birds were next to the
road on east side, feeding on a few patches of sunflower seeds on the snow.

[Ontbirds] Common Redpoll at TTP, Toronto

2018-02-22 Thread Jack Alvo via ONTBIRDS
The Common Redpoll reported a few days ago on e-Bird was present again
today, in the same general area and once again in a flock of Goldfinches.
Following the main road south toward the lighthouse, this flock was very
close to the turn-off for Peninsula B (look for the big rocks by the edge of
the road).

As a reminder Tommy Thompson Park (TTP) is not open to the public between
9:00 and 4:00 on weekdays, except holidays.

Directions: TTP is at the foot of Leslie Street.
