Greetings Ontbirders

The Thick-billed Kingbird didn't reappear tonight. I left the area with a group
of birders at roughly 7:50pm. The bird was seen feeding actively until 10:15am
in the area it was relocated in yesterday. The bird was fairly active in the
morning and it's possible that it is lying low due to the high winds today.

The Thick-billed Kingbird was last seen flying into the same Ash tree it flew
into last night at 7:35 tonight. Hopefully it reappears in the morning for
birders who were unable to make it today.

The best place for people to park tomorrow coming to see the bird would be in
the lower parking lot at the north end of Atkins Lane.

Greetings Ontbirders

Tonight while biking to the bridge on Paxton overlooking the Calf Pasture I
heard a call I wasn't familiar with. When I scanned the trees a kingbird with a
massive bill was perched on a dead branch. I knew it had to be a Thick-billed
Kingbird!

I got on the phone and the first person to arrive was Andrea Kingsley followed
by a group of local birders. Pictures, video and call were all recorded.

At approx 7.55pm it flew into a thick Ash tree and hopefully settled in.

The best place for people to park tomorrow coming to see the bird would be in

2010-08-26 Thread bill gilmour
Greetings Ontbirders

HIGHLIGHTS

TUNDRA SWAN
PEREGRINE FALCON
WHIMBREL
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER

The week started with good numbers and variety of shorebirds. Numbers dropped
off as the week went on only to begin to pick up again on the afternoon of
August 26. Songbird migration has been steady with a high of 21 species of
warblers seen by a keen birder from Algonquin on August 24.

A TUNDRA SWAN was spotted amongst the many MUTE SWANS rafting in Popham Bay on
August 24. A RUFFED GROUSE was flushed from the Newcastle Trail on August 20.
Good numbers of PIED-BILLED GREBES can be seen from Coot's lookout all week
with at least 30 individuals. For birders new to the park taking a trip down
Bayshore road can be quite rewarding. Best areas to view from are Coot's
lookout, both sides of the road as you approach the overpass at calf pasture
for migrant flycatchers and raptors and Salt Point for shorebirds in low water
years, also there are a number of cottages and homes with feeders and a good
songbird migration along the road. A GREEN HERON continues to be seen at the
calf pasture as late as August 26.

TURKEY VULTURE on August 26, OSPREY with a high of four birds on August 24 at
the calf pasture, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK August 25 and 26, COOPER'S HAWK, and a
RED-TAILED HAWK August 26 were seen in the park the past week. A PEREGRINE
FALCON has been terrorizing the shorebirds for most of the past week in the
Owen Point area and was last reported on August 24 . MERLIN sightings have
increased the past week with birds seen at various locations, interesting in
that the numbers of Green Darners and other large dragonflies in general have
increased as well.

Fifteen species of shorebirds were reported in the park the past week mostly
between lookout #1 and Owen Point. High counts include six BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS on August 21, two WHIMBREL standing at the tip of Owen Point on August
24, two juvenile RED KNOTS on August 20, twelve SANDERLING on August 20, two
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS (last seen August 21), and six SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS
on August 20.

CHIMNEY SWIFTS put in an appearance this week with totals of three on August 21
and a single bird on August 24 at the lighthouse.

A total of six Tyrant Flycatchers were reported in the park the past week. A
high count of four OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were seen in the calf pasture on
August 24, the lighthouse has been the best place for EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE all
week with at least four birds present on August 26, LEAST FLYCATCHER seen in
various places, EASTERN PHOEBE at the calf pasture August 24, GREAT-CRESTED
FLYCATCHER various locations as well as EASTERN KINGBIRDS mostly seen in the
vicinity of the calf pasture.

A CAROLINA WREN continues to be seen and heard from 83 Bayshore this week,
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was reported last on August 22, and one breeding WOOD
THRUSH on August 20 and two migrant thrushes, VEERY and SWAINSON'S were seen on
the Newcastle Trail on August 26.

Twenty one species of warblers were reported in the park the past week. The
best day for warblers was on August 24 seen in a number of locations in the
park such as the lighthouse, Paxton, calf pasture, Jobes Woods and the fingers
trail. TENNESSEE, NASHVILLE, NORTHERN PARULA, YELLOW WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, a surprising number of CAPE MAY WARBLERS,
BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN
WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER,
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, OVENBIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH,
MOURNING WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, WILSON'S WARBLER and CANADA WARBLER were
all reported on this date and during the past week.

A SCARLET TANAGER was reported from 83 Bayshore on August 21. A bit odd of a
sighting was an ORCHARD ORIOLE feeding on the algae flats with the shorebirds
at Owen Point on August 24.

[Ontbirds] Presqu'ile Weekly Report

2010-08-19 Thread bill gilmour
Greetings Ontbirders

HIGHLIGHTS

WHIMBREL
RED KNOT
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER
PEREGRINE FALCON
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER
CAROLINA WREN

The clear cool night air and the Perseids Meteor showers in the sky created
perfect conditions for a mass exodus of songbirds on Friday the 13th.
Songbird's and especially shorebird numbers picked up greatly as the week went
on.

Two HORNED GREBES were observed from Owen Point on August 15.

A juvenile LEAST BITTERN was seen on August 13 near the main viewing platform
at the marsh boardwalk. GREAT BLUE HERONS and GREAT EGRETS are still being seen
daily, and a GREEN HERON was seen on August 17 at the old boat ramp located at
the bottom of Atkins Lane in the calf pasture. Two BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS
were seen flying toward High Bluff Island on August 18. The RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER seen last week with seven young was down to two ducklings this week,
three HOODED MERGANSERS were also seen in the vicinity of Gull Island.

Shorebirding has been great the past week with a high of 15 species being seen
on August 18. Most birds are being viewed from Owen Point but the grassy area
just north of lookout #1 has produced a WHIMBREL during the past week.
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and KILLDEER were reported on
August 19. A single GREATER YELLOWLEGS was seen August 15. LESSER YELLOWLEGS
and SPOTTED SANDPIPER seen August 19. The WHIMBREL was last reported on August
18 at the tip of Owen Point. Two RUDDY TURNSTONES, two juvenile RED KNOTS and
eleven SANDERLING were seen August 19. Two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were last
reported August 18. There are at least nineteen BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS with one
adult amongst them, forty plus SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, fifty plus LEAST
SANDPIPERS, four juvenile SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, and three juvenile
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS.

Raptors seen this week were a second year BALD EAGLE circling Gull Island on
August 18 and over the marsh on August 19. COOPER'S HAWKS are being seen daily
with a high count of two at the calf pasture. OSPREY are also being seen daily,
the marsh lookout and Salt Point are good places to look. A PEREGRINE FALCON
successfully scattered and caught one unidentified shorebird on August 18. A
MERLIN also cruised Owen point on August 18.

Four species of gull were seen in the park the past week BONAPARTE'S GULL,
RINGED-BILLED GULL, HERRING GULL and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL. The last reported
COMMON TERN was on August 15 at Owen Point and CASPIAN TERNS are still fairly
common at the same location.

Two OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were seen from the main park road. Trees with dead
branches on either side of the road are good places to look for these birds on
your way into the park. If this fails check the calf pasture. Other flycatchers
seen this week were EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE , LEAST FLYCATCHER, EASTERN PHOEBE,
GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER and EASTERN KINGBIRDS.

The CAROLINA WREN is still being seen in the vicinity of 83 Bayshore Rd and the
last BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was reported from the same location on August 13. A
LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen in the vicinity of the lighthouse on August 19. A
lone ORCHARD ORIOLE seen on August 19 at the lighthouse and may be one of the
last of its kind seen as most ORCHARD ORIOLES departed on August 13. A PURPLE
FINCH is visiting the feeders at 83 Bayshore Rd most days.

[Ontbirds] Presqu'ile Weelky Report

2010-08-12 Thread bill gilmour
Greetings Ontbirders

As we approach the middle of August, the fall bird migration at Presqu'ile
Provincial Park is gradually picking up steam, though the steamy weather has
not helped move it along. Since the fall migration is typically a much more
drawn out process than the spring rush, it is not surprising that most days are
seeing only one or two newly returned species.

With the exception of thousands of DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS and dozens of
CANADA GEESE and MUTE SWANS, water birds have been scarce in the past week,
though a COMMON LOON was calling excitedly on a couple of mornings as it flew
past and a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER with seven ducklings in tow was at Owen Point
on August 11. Interesting as well was the sighting of HOODED MERGANSERS with
ducklings opposite the first viewing area on August 12 . GREAT BLUE
HERONS,GREAT EGRETS and BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS have all been regularly seen
in the past week and OSPREY are now a daily sighting.

SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS and a COOPER`S HAWK have been seen in the last week and a
PEREGRINE FALCON buzzed the shorebirds at dusk on Owen Point and Gull Island on
August 11. A dozen or more species of shorebirds have been reported in the park
the past week. They include a few BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, both LESSER and
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, a report without any details of an UPLAND SANDPIPER, a
continuing WHIMBREL visible (with patience) on most days in the vegetation
opposite lookout # 1 on the Owen Point trail, a RUDDY TURNSTONE at Owen Point
on August 11 and the first two SANDERLINGS of the season on Owen Point. Two
juvenile BAIRD`S SANDPIPERS were located at Owen Point on August 11 and an
AMERICAN WOODCOCK on the Owen point trail.

BONAPARTE`S GULLS are being seen at various places with a high count of twelve
over Presqu`ile Bay. BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS were found on two different days. A
BARRED OWL was heard calling from behind 83 Bayshore road.A RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER was seen at 38 Bayshore road. A CAROLINA WREN is seen most days at
83 Bayshore road. BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS are being seen almost everyday and a
WOOD THRUSH was heard calling on Paxton near the north end of the paved trail.

A sign of things to come is the influx of migrant warblers in recent days.
Among the 18 species seen were a TENNESSEE WARBLER, several CAPE MAY WARBLERS,
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS,OVENBIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH,
MOURNING WARBLER, WILSON`S WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, and the best of all, a
PRAIRIE WARBLER seen coming to a drip bath at 83 Bayshore on August 11 and 12.

A SCARLET TANAGER was seen at 83 Bayshore on August 11 and ORCHARD ORIOLES in
various plumages have been fairly easy to find in the park this past week week.

To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton.
Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid
that is available at the Park gate. Access to the offshore islands is

Today and yesterday we had Black Throated Blue, Black and White,

Indigo Bunting not quite in breeding plumage.
Another interesting thing happened here. Some creature and we believe
it would be several Black Crowned Night Herons, took a total of 19
Goldfish, all around 8 to 10 inches long from our backyard pond from
Friday to Sunday when we were at the cottage. All that is left is one

Rondeau Bird Report – Monday May 7 to Wednesday May 9, 2007

Evening hikes along the Marsh Trail on May 7 and 8 have yielded a good
variety of crepuscular and wetland species, including American Bittern,
Sora, Virginia Rail, Whip-poor-will, Sandhill Cranes (3) and American
Woodcock (7+). Forster’s Terns are being reported. There is a Bald Eagle
nest with two large young which is easily observed from the trail on our
Tuesday and Thursday hikes. Aside from scheduled hikes, vehicular access to
the trail is blocked, but the viewing site is accessible by bicycle (or by
hiking) at other times. A Black Tern was seen on the beach on May 8.

A total of 24 species of warblers were reported from May 7 to 9. There have
been no additional reports of the TOWNSEND'S WARBLER photographed here on
Bennett Road on Sat. May 5. A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was seen by many
observers on the first bridge / boardwalk of the Spicebush Trail on May 9 at
from 2:45 to 5:45 p.m. (I will submit a rare bird report for a local
review.)Our first Prothonotarys seem to have arrived on May 8, and a small
number of birds have been noted on Bennett Road, Gardiner Road, Spicebush
Trail and Tulip Tree Trail. A striking photograph of the male Cerulean
present at the Pony Barns from May 3 – 7 has been posted on the OFO website.
Other ‘good’ warblers include several Blue-winged and Northern Parulas at
various locations and a Golden-winged on South Point Trail. A Blackpoll

WEEKLY BIRD REPORT FROM PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY AND THE QUINTE AREA FOR THE
WEEK ENDINGThursday, June 01, 2006

Although the Birding Festival is over, and the well worn paths in the Point
Traverse Woods are springing back to life with plant growth, there is still
plenty to see down there, despite the thick foliage. On May 29th, there were
good numbers of BLACKPOLL WARBLERS. Among the 13 species of warblers
observed were TENNESSEE, CHESTNUT-SIDED, MAGNOLIA, BLACKBURNIAN,
BLACK-THROATED GREEN, WILSON'S, as well as OVENBIRD, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and
one lonely YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. Also present were OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER,
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, and quite a few thrushes, mainly
SWAINSON'S and a couple of GRAY-CHEEKED.

The big sighting this past week was a bit out of the Quinte area, when a
PAINTED REDSTART appeared in a birder's backyard in Sudbury on May 26th. A
bit closer to home, apparently unattached singles of NORTHERN HARRIER and
AMERICAN KESTREL continue to be seen near the west end of Big Island, where
60 CANADA GEESE (mostly young birds) can be seen daily in Muscote Bay. A
kayak paddle down the Sawguin Creek near Huff's Island on the 30th resulted
in 5 AMERICAN BITTERNS, 12 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 2 MUTE SWANS, and several
CANADA GEESE, SWAMP SPARROWS, MARSH WRENS and YELLOW WARBLERS turning up.

The Quinte Area Bird Report regrets that a number of significant sightings
from the Prince Edward Point and Point Traverse area, e-mailed to me for
last week, got overlooked. On May 20, an EARED GREBE in breeding plumage,
and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were both seen off Point Traverse. Among the
other notable sightings recorded that weekend in the Prince Edward Point
area were an immature BALD EAGLE, SEDGE WREN (seen near the banding station
on the 21st), and among the 26 species of warblers, an ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER and a late PALM WARBLER. The above
birds were seen during the Kingston Field Naturalists May 20/21 Spring Bird
Round-up.

The Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory reports that the DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS are still increasing and up to 2000 have been seen roosting on
the shoal offshore. A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was seen in the harbour on
the 30th, while overhead a few flocks of migrating CANADA GEESE can be seen
as they move north to moult. A single BRANT flew past on the 27th no doubt
wondering where the rest of his kind are. A male GREATER SCAUP was swimming
in the harbour on the 30th and the last WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen on the
26th.

A BROAD-WINGED HAWK flew over on the 29th. The KILLDEER on Babylon Road
have at least three young running around and there were three SPOTTED
SANDPIPERS on the beach on the 28th and there were three SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS flying past on the 29th. Six BONAPARTE'S GULLS were sitting among
the other gulls on the beach on the 28th and are the first seen here since
the 4th of May. Up to three BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS are present and a
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was trapped on the 29th. Eight CHIMNEY SWIFTS were
flying around the Point on the evening of the 26th and a RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER continues to be seen occasionally. Two PILEATED WOODPECKERS put
in an appearance on the 28th. Flycatchers are starting to move through and
the 29th saw a small arrival of them with the following being prese

Greetings all,

The 40th Presqu'ile CBC was held today, Sunday Dec. 19th in increasingly
bitterly cold, windy conditions. There are still some feeder numbers to
come in but so far we stand at 70 species plus 5 in count week which is
about typical for the past decade. Here are the highlights to date:

Best Birds:

Ivory Gull - an adult seen flying east past the Presqu'ile lighthouse
shortly after noon and has not yet been relocated. Incredibly this is
the 2nd time we have had Ivory Gull on this count - the last time on
January 2, 1967! It is also the 4th Park record.

Great Gray Owl - one bird seen hunting along the Murky Canal about 250m
west of the western bridge; another was reported from Presqu'ile's
Jobes' Wood Trail yesterday but was not found today.

Tufted Titmouse - one at the feeders near the lighthouse is actually our
first ever for the count. This is the same bird that has been here
since early October.

Good Finds:

1 Com Loon
1 D-c Cormorant
1 R-n Duck
3 Bald Eagle - ties the all time high count
CP Merlin
2 Purple Sandpiper - at shoals on SE corner of Gull Island
1 R-b Woodpecker - now seems to be normal to see one or two each year
1 Com. Raven
4 Winter Wren - ties all-time high

Some misses include Am. Kestrel, C. Grackle, Song and Swamp Sparrow

Thanks to all who took part,

your compilers,

John Blaney, Doug McRae, Maureen Riggs

sorry forgot directions to park

Greetings birders

The white-winged dove is still being seen at the time of this posting. The
yellow-headed blackbird has seemed to move on to greener pastures. I would
like to thank guests for their kind words and offers of seed. Please keep in
mind that your purchase of a park permit allows you the ability to view
other wonderful birds such as a yellow rail in the marsh and other avian
wonders this park holds, plus and at the same time shows the park the true
financial benefit it gets from supporting and promoting this great activity.
One final note when possible please park in my driveway or yard.

Thanks Bill
