Greetings Ontbirders Tonight while biking to the bridge on Paxton overlooking the Calf Pasture I heard a call I wasn't familiar with. The last reported COMMON TERN was on August 15 at Owen Point and CASPIAN TERNS are still fairly common at the same location. Two OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were seen from the main park road. Trees with dead branches on either side of the road are good places to look for these birds on your way into the park. If this fails check the calf pasture. Other flycatchers seen this week were EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE , LEAST FLYCATCHER, EASTERN PHOEBE, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER and EASTERN KINGBIRDS. The CAROLINA WREN is still being seen in the vicinity of 83 Bayshore Rd and the last BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was reported from the same location on August 13. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen in the vicinity of the lighthouse on August 19. A lone ORCHARD ORIOLE seen on August 19 at the lighthouse and may be one of the last of its kind seen as most ORCHARD ORIOLES departed on August 13. A PURPLE FINCH is visiting the feeders at 83 Bayshore Rd most days. Bill Gilmour To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton. [Ontbirds] Presqu'ile Weelky Report
Greetings Ontbirders As we approach the middle of August, the fall bird migration at Presqu'ile Provincial Park is gradually picking up steam, though the steamy weather has not helped move it along. Since the fall migration is typically a much more drawn out process than the spring rush, it is not surprising that most days are seeing only one or two newly returned species. With the exception of thousands of DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS and dozens of CANADA GEESE and MUTE SWANS, water birds have been scarce in the past week, though a COMMON LOON was calling excitedly on a couple of mornings as it flew past and a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER with seven ducklings in tow was at Owen Point on August 11. Interesting as well was the sighting of HOODED MERGANSERS with ducklings opposite the first viewing area on August 12 . GREAT BLUE HERONS,GREAT EGRETS and BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS have all been regularly seen in the past week and OSPREY are now a daily sighting. SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS and a COOPER`S HAWK have been seen in the last week and a PEREGRINE FALCON buzzed the shorebirds at dusk on Owen Point and Gull Island on August 11. A dozen or more species of shorebirds have been reported in the park the past week. They include a few BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, both LESSER and GREATER YELLOWLEGS, a report without any details of an UPLAND SANDPIPER, a continuing WHIMBREL visible (with patience) on most days in the vegetation opposite lookout # 1 on the Owen Point trail, a RUDDY TURNSTONE at Owen Point on August 11 and the first two SANDERLINGS of the season on Owen Point. Two juvenile BAIRD`S SANDPIPERS were located at Owen Point on August 11 and an AMERICAN WOODCOCK on the Owen point trail. BONAPARTE`S GULLS are being seen at various places with a high count of twelve over Presqu`ile Bay. BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS were found on two different days. A BARRED OWL was heard calling from behind 83 Bayshore road.A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen at 38 Bayshore road. A CAROLINA WREN is seen most days at 83 Bayshore road. BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS are being seen almost everyday and a WOOD THRUSH was heard calling on Paxton near the north end of the paved trail. A sign of things to come is the influx of migrant warblers in recent days. Among the 18 species seen were a TENNESSEE WARBLER, several CAPE MAY WARBLERS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS,OVENBIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, MOURNING WARBLER, WILSON`S WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, and the best of all, a PRAIRIE WARBLER seen coming to a drip bath at 83 Bayshore on August 11 and 12. A SCARLET TANAGER was seen at 83 Bayshore on August 11 and ORCHARD ORIOLES in various plumages have been fairly easy to find in the park this past week week. To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton. Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid that is available at the Park gate. Access to the offshore islands is restricted at this time of year to prevent disturbance to the colonial nesting birds there. On May 29th, there were good numbers of BLACKPOLL WARBLERS. Among the 13 species of warblers observed were TENNESSEE, CHESTNUT-SIDED, MAGNOLIA, BLACKBURNIAN, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, WILSON'S, as well as OVENBIRD, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and one lonely YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. Also present were OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, and quite a few thrushes, mainly SWAINSON'S and a couple of GRAY-CHEEKED. The big sighting this past week was a bit out of the Quinte area, when a PAINTED REDSTART appeared in a birder's backyard in Sudbury on May 26th. A bit closer to home, apparently unattached singles of NORTHERN HARRIER and AMERICAN KESTREL continue to be seen near the west end of Big Island, where 60 CANADA GEESE (mostly young birds) can be seen daily in Muscote Bay. A kayak paddle down the Sawguin Creek near Huff's Island on the 30th resulted in 5 AMERICAN BITTERNS, 12 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 2 MUTE SWANS, and several CANADA GEESE, SWAMP SPARROWS, MARSH WRENS and YELLOW WARBLERS turning up. The Quinte Area Bird Report regrets that a number of significant sightings from the Prince Edward Point and Point Traverse area, e-mailed to me for last week, got overlooked. On May 20, an EARED GREBE in breeding plumage, and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were both seen off Point Traverse. Among the other notable sightings recorded that weekend in the Prince Edward Point area were an immature BALD EAGLE, SEDGE WREN (seen near the banding station on the 21st), and among the 26 species of warblers, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER and a late PALM WARBLER. The above birds were seen during the Kingston Field Naturalists May 20/21 Spring Bird Round-up. The Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory reports that the DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS are still increasing and up to 2000 have been seen roosting on the shoal offshore. A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was seen in the harbour on the 30th, while overhead a few flocks of migrating CANADA GEESE can be seen as they move north to moult. A single BRANT flew past on the 27th no doubt wondering where the rest of his kind are. A male GREATER SCAUP was swimming in the harbour on the 30th and the last WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen on the 26th. A BROAD-WINGED HAWK flew over on the 29th. The KILLDEER on Babylon Road have at least three young running around and there were three SPOTTED SANDPIPERS on the beach on the 28th and there were three SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS flying past on the 29th. Six BONAPARTE'S GULLS were sitting among the other gulls on the beach on the 28th and are the first seen here since the 4th of May. Up to three BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS are present and a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was trapped on the 29th. Eight CHIMNEY SWIFTS were flying around the Point on the evening of the 26th and a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER continues to be seen occasionally. Two PILEATED WOODPECKERS put in an appearance on the 28th. Flycatchers are starting to move through and the 29th saw a small arrival of them with the following being prese

There are still some feeder numbers to come in but so far we stand at 70 species plus 5 in count week which is about typical for the past decade. Here are the highlights to date: Best Birds: Ivory Gull - an adult seen flying east past the Presqu'ile lighthouse shortly after noon and has not yet been relocated. Incredibly this is the 2nd time we have had Ivory Gull on this count - the last time on January 2, 1967! It is also the 4th Park record. Great Gray Owl - one bird seen hunting along the Murky Canal about 250m west of the western bridge; another was reported from Presqu'ile's Jobes' Wood Trail yesterday but was not found today. Tufted Titmouse - one at the feeders near the lighthouse is actually our first ever for the count. This is the same bird that has been here since early October. white-winged dove
sorry forgot directions to park Greetings birders The white-winged dove is still being seen at the time of this posting. The yellow-headed blackbird has seemed to move on to greener pastures. I would like to thank guests for their kind words and offers of seed. Please keep in mind that your purchase of a park permit allows you the ability to view other wonderful birds such as a yellow rail in the marsh and other avian wonders this park holds, plus and at the same time shows the park the true financial benefit it gets from supporting and promoting this great activity. One final note when possible please park in my driveway or yard. Thanks Bill Directions: Presqu'ile Provincial Park is located south of Brighton.
