[Ontbirds] Western Kingbird Dundas Yes

2019-11-19 Thread rpope--- via ONTBIRDS

For any that have not yet seen it, the Western Kingbird was still near
Urquhart Butterfly Gardens in Dundas from 11:45-12:15pm today, looking very
frisky and feeding well in spite of the bald patch on the front crown. It
was feeding actively east of the Dewitt Mover and Storage building in the
northwest corner of the field with burdock, teasel and goldenrod.
Directions: per Frank Pinilla: exit 403 at Highway 6 North and then quickly
onto York Road, proceed ca 5 km to King St. East where you turn right and
soon park on the south side just west of the Hamilton Air Force club.

[Ontbirds] Summer Tanager Update

2018-11-27 Thread rpope--- via ONTBIRDS

After appearing on Saturday, Nov 25, the Cobourg female Summer Tanager was
seen and photographed by several groups on the morning of Sunday Nov. 25.
It was subsequently missed by everyone who tried for it and not seen at all
for the rest of the day.

No one but my wife and I saw it on Monday, Nov. 26; it surprised me by
coming to my feeder for 2 minutes. Several groups, including myself, have
failed to locate it today.

Apart from one trip to my backyard feeder, it has always been seen from the
sidewalks on College Street close to Chapel Street. I suspect it hides in
backyards he rest of the time and it may be going to someone's feeder.
If I find out more and learn the birds habits, I shall, of course, post.

[Ontbirds] Cobourg Summer Tanger

2018-11-24 Thread rpope--- via ONTBIRDS

This morning in Cobourg between 9am-12 noon I saw a female tanager on the
east side of College Street between James Street and King Street. My wife
said there was a yellow and green bird with a slight crest outside our
window and I rushed to look. After a moment's disorientation, I soon
concluded it was a female Summer Tanager because of the large and long
light-coloured beak, the full yellow underparts, and the fact that the
greenish wings were the same colour as the mantle and back.
I called Margaret Bain who rushed over and saw the bird and fully concurred
with my ID. The only thing that troubled me was was how bright the yellow
was when I first saw it, though it was in full sun. Later the yellow seemed
more subdued. I tried to make it into a Scarlet, but it just would not fit.

After some research by Margret we learned there have been at least 3 other
Summer Tanagers in Ontario this November, but no Scarlets. The closest
Scarlets are in Cape May and Florida; none in Ontario - they seem to have
all moved out.

The bird flushed a number of times but usually landed within a hundred
yards. It was never higher than 20 feet or so, usually about 6 feet off the
ground.

Last seen before the rain two houses north of St. Peter's Church at the
north-east corner of College and King Streets.

Rob Lonsberry came over to photograph the bird but we could not refind it.

[Ontbirds] Little Gull Cobourg

2018-10-25 Thread rpope--- via ONTBIRDS

Between 4-5 o'clock today there were well over 500 Bonaparte's Gulls in the
Cobourg Harbour, mainly east of the east pier at the bottom of Division
Street. I only saw 1 Little Gull, but look for more. The gulls re building
up fast.

Also many loons. Perhaps the Pacific Loon Dave Milsom saw in Port Hope was
seen yesterday by Margaret and today by me off the east pier.

I saw upwards of 5000 Red-breasted Mergansers (I know, it's a lot), west of
the west headland of the harbour. flying back and forth in and endless
thick cloud.
There were Long-tailed Ducks and White-winged Scoters in the Harbour and
small flocks of Snow Buntings flitting about.

Harbour at the foot of Hibernia Street for the first time lately. 1 Greater

range by Margaret Bain and me. The Western flew west towards Port Hope

[Ontbirds] Western Tanager

2018-05-06 Thread rpope--- via ONTBIRDS
At 3:00pm Rob Lonsberry and I refound the tanager at the same spot where it
was originally found. By the time I left a number of others were there on
the bird.
Directions: Take 28 south to the bottom to Peter Street (Highway 2), turn
east at the lights, go east up the hill to the lights and turn south on
Hope Street, cross railroad and continue south until the road pulls east
along the lake; keep on it past Sculthorpe Marsh and on east to the Sewage
Plant where it swings south; go to the cement parking barrier. It was 25
yards south of the barrier above the road. It moved around slowly for an
hour but kept coming back to the tamaracks feeding at about 30 feet up.

[Ontbirds] Lark Bunting

2014-06-27 Thread rpope--- via ONTBIRDS
Directions: South from Stella to 2nd Concession, right on 2nd Concession
and proceed West to McGinn where you turn south and go to 550 and watch the
guy wires. The first half of the bird's loud song is very much like that of
a Cardinal and can be heard from far off.
I only post this message because the hay on the whole island is largely
uncut and birding for regular grassland birds is wonderful. The hay must be
cut soon, though, and it will be like the Ferndale Dickcissels all over
again. Almost all of Northumberland County, for example, is already cut.
If one needs this bird, one should probably go soon. .
Cheers, richard
