[ONTBIRDS] Brown Pelican continues - now back in Ontario

2020-09-03 Thread Mark D. Read via ONTBIRDS
Just a quick update to say the Brown Pelican, first reported on Aug 30 on
the US side of the St Lawrence River near Mallorytown, was today seen on
Griswold Island (in Ontario). It was also seen on this same island on 31st
Aug. Today, it was viewed from 1202 Thousand Islands Parkway
(https://ebird.org/canada/checklist/S73131778).

[Ontbirds] Brown Pelican seen early this morning at Confederation Park, please post if you see it!

2019-05-30 Thread Cheryl Edgecombe via ONTBIRDS
This morning Tristan Uchida saw the Brown Pelican at Confederation Park near
the waterworks, it was flying east but briefly touched down. Local birders
are out scanning now and have not turned it up but I am posting widely so
that if others are in the area and able to look or see the bird they can
post immediately. More eyes, the better the chances.

Confederation Park is on VanWagner's Beach road east of Centennial Parkway.

This is a highly sought after Hamilton Bird!

Thanks
Cheryl Edgecombe

Hi OntBirders,

My apologies for the lack of info in my report.

The Pelican was observed by my nephew Daniel Fisher, a non-birder with lots of
experience seeing Brown Pelicans in Florida and Mexico, and his girlfriend. At
roughly 11:00am the bird was seen flying in a southwest direction over
Thorncliffe Mall, which is in the Leaside / Thorncliffe Park area of Toronto.

pier as the foot of Liberty street in Bowmanville or——— other poets west.

[Ontbirds] Brown Pelican at Bond Head Wednesday May 22 12:00 p.m. (Harbour/Marina on Lake Ontario South of Newcastle

2019-05-22 Thread Dennis Barry via ONTBIRDS
Mid-morning today Ian Whittaker, who lives nearby, called Margaret Carney to
report a "dark pelican" flying around the harbour at Bond Head. After I
talked to Ian, I called Phill Holder who lived in Newcastle. He was able to
photograph the bird, and identified it as a brown pelican, possibly a
sub-adult.

The bird continues in the harbour and in the marina to the
west, sometimes disappearing among the boats in the marina.

Exit #401 at Mill street in Newcastle and follow the road south to the
harbour. When the road divides just south of #401, keep left and follow
along the east side of the creek until you reach Lake Ontario.

[Ontbirds] Brown Pelican, Newcastle Harbour

2019-05-22 Thread Michael Ferguson via ONTBIRDS
Andrea Kingsley just called me asking me to send an alert out that Phil
Holder is currently watching a Brown Pelican at the marina in Newcastle
Harbour, also known as Bond Head, in Durham.

To get to the harbour exit 401 (east of Bowmanville) on Mill St and proceed
south to the parking lot right at the lake at the foot of Mill St.

[Ontbirds] Brown Pelican - North of Point Pelee National Park, Jun 26, 2017

2017-06-29 Thread Sarah Rupert via ONTBIRDS
Hello All

Sorry that there was a delay in getting this report out - I only got a
call from the observer this am.

On Monday evening, at 7 pm, a Brown Pelican was observed flying past a
cottage on East Beach Road (this road runs south of Hillman Marsh toward
Point Pelee). The observer is very familiar with this bird from visits to
Florida, and was confident in the identification.

The bird was observed flying south along the shoreline towards to park.
Another wandering bird to keep and eye open for on Lake Erie, if you're
out looking for the frigatebird.

Good Birding!
Sarah

[Ontbirds] Brown Pelican

2017-05-31 Thread Bob Curry via ONTBIRDS

Ontbirders,

This morning we spent from 0830 to 1130, except for a half hour when we
went two blocks south to an excellent family restaurant for breakfast
(try it next Fall), sitting at the parking lot just north of Bowen Road
and watching the Brown Pelican. It spent almost all of the time on buoy
#5 except when it was fishing in the adjacent waters. At about 11:20 it
flew out to the centre of the river to join a flock of feeding Common
Terns. The charts indicate that this was just into Ontario waters. We
left soon after, funny thing.

For those contemplating making the drive, the Brown Pelican had been seen
regularly throughout the day. I just finished watching it with Blayne and Jean
Farnan and Cecilia Verkley. It spent most of the time perched on one of the
large green buoys close to the New York shore. It had been flying around and
fishing earlier.

This is the 3rd day that the Brown Pelican has been seen along the Buffalo/Fort
Erie waterfront. It tends to favour the area between Strawberry Island and the
north end of Unity Island.

[Ontbirds] Brown Pelican -- more details

2013-08-24 Thread Alan Wormington

The bird was still present at Wheatley Harbour yesterday until at least 1:00
p.m. Shorly thereafter, a local fisherman stated (to Allen Woodliffe) that two
kids swam out to the breakwall, where all birds spooked and scattered,
including the Brown Pelican.

And at Cleveland, the bird actually returned yesterday afternoon (Friday) when
seen arriving (from Lake Erie) at 4:30 p.m.

In a direct line the distance from Wheatley Harbour to Cleveland --- as the
pelican flies --- is about 88 km (55 miles).

It is quite possible that the Brown Pelican may return to Wheatley Harbour in
the days or weeks ahead.

The Brown Pelican has NOT been seen today (August 24) at Wheatley Harbour.

I just got an e-mail from Chuck Slusarczyk in Ohio, stating that the bird has
RETURNED to Cleveland as of 11:00 a.m. this morning (the bird was first
discovered at Cleveland on June 24th).

The bird was seen yesterday (August 23) at Wheatley until at least 12:00 Noon.
If anyone saw it later than this, please send me an e-mail.

The recent movements of this bird are very similar to the strange antics that I
described in detail for previous Brown Pelicans in Ontario and the Great Lakes,
and is worth reading again:

the bird sometimes moves to the opposite side of the break wall. That
side of the break wall is visible from Detroit Ave in Wheatley.

good luck and good birding

[Ontbirds] Brown pelican, present at dark

2013-08-20 Thread Sarah Rupert
Hi all
Just got a note from Pete Read, he'd tried to post, but wasn't able to. The
pelican was present on the break wall when it got dark, so it should be there
in the morning for anyone thinking of coming.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Brown Pelican - Wheatley Harbour, Yes

2013-08-20 Thread Sarah Rupert
Hi All

I was able to make it out to Wheatley Harbour after work and was lucky enough
to get to see the pelican. It was sitting on the rock break wall as previously
reported by Alan Wormington. The bird stayed in the same location until 7 pm
when it took off and flew out into the lake. It had not returned by 7:45 pm
when I left. Just got a text message from Pete Read and the bird has returned
and will likely roost there for the night. Pete plans to stay until dark and
will post another update.

Best viewing was from the pier located at the south end of Kent County rd 1.
Good birding!

[Ontbirds] ***Brown Pelican*** at Wheatley Harbour

2013-08-20 Thread Alan Wormington

At 7:45 a.m. this morning (August 20) I was standing at the end of the
east-side pier at Wheatley Harbour, where a BROWN PELICAN flew in and landed on
the offshore rock breakwall. I then blurted out some words that can not be
repeated here! For the next hour or so the bird preened, and then went to
sleep. I took lots of photos.

At about 9:00 a.m., I went back to the parking lot where both Jeremy Bensette
and Ken Burrell had just arrived (they had been alerted earlier), and I walked
back out onto the pier to show them the bird. But remarkably, the bird was
GONE and despite considerable searching, we could not re-find it. However,
just now at 10:35 a.m., Jeremy phoned to say that the bird was now back on the
rock pile!

The bird appears to be a two-year-old immature, and there is no doubt that it
is the same bird that has been summering at Cleveland, Ohio. After a week's
absence the bird returned there on August 16, but I have not seen any reports
for there since.

Also, the same Brown Pelican made an appearance at Leamington Marina on July 7,
when seen and reported in detail by Bill Kerr (via Allen Woodliffe).

I suspect the bird will remain at Wheatley Harbour for a while.

No LLBs!

Alan Wormington,
Leamington

[Ontbirds] Brown Pelican at Niagara Falls

2013-07-01 Thread Peter Burke
Today my wife Dawn Burke saw a Brown Pelican above Niagara Falls twice over the
period of 2 hours. The bird was first spotted about 2 pm soaring over the
rapids from Dufferin Park with gulls. She watched it as her and the kids walked
into town. It was later spotted around 4 pm in roughly the same location,
soaring again, a bit further downstream towards the falls as they were walking
back to the vehicle. Although she didn't have binoculars with her, she's seen
BRPE many times in more southern locations within their range and commented
that it wasn't much bigger than a Turkey Vulture.

Directions: She was parked in the Dufferin Isle Rd. off Niagara Parkway south
of the Horseshoe Falls. The bird was observed from the walkway along the river
going back north towards the Falls.

[Ontbirds] Brown Pelican across from Fort Erie last evening

2012-08-28 Thread Andrew Keaveney
Hi Ontbirders.

Please see eBird or western new York bird hotline online for details. You will
know as much as I!

Myself and Josh Vandermuelen staked out the area this A.M. and I went across to
buffalo to get a closer look but I couldn't find either the pelican or any
American birders looking for it.

It is almost certainly still in eastern Lake Erie so please keep your eyes open!

Directions: Waverly Beach in Fort Erie is where we spent time looking from.
Take last exit (central ave.) before Peace Bridge.

Cheers.

Further to the report from Rondeau yesterday, we got a report at the park today

some local residents who were out fishing. Definitely worth keeping an eye

[Ontbirds] BROWN PELICAN in S. L. HURON

2012-05-26 Thread Alf Rider
Hello Birders.
This morning a single observer reported a
BROWN PELICAN at about 10.30am., flying overhead and down Lake Huron Near
Kettle Point.
The observer checked with the Bird books before telling me.

So if anyone is checking the Lake around Sarnia/Port Huron, you might re-find
it again.

Good Birding.

[Ontbirds] Brown Pelican - Lake Erie, Western New York, USA

2009-07-08 Thread WilliamWatsonSr
Today and yesterday a Brown Pelican has been seen in Dunkirk, New York. It
is usually seen near the west end of the far break wall. Also a first
summer alternate plumage Lesser Black-backed Gull (rare in July) was found on
the docks about a 100 yards west of Dunkirk Pier.

Directions:

Make sure you have a passport, nexus, passport card, or enhanced drivers
license.

In Fort Erie the QEW becomes the Peace Bridge. Cross the Peace Bridge into
Buffalo and turn slightly right for .2 miles from customs and merge onto
the I-190 toward DOWNTOWN BUFFALO. After 6.7 miles merge onto the I-90 toward
ERIE. After 41.4 miles take Exit 59 and go North (right) on Rt. 60 toward
Dunkirk. After 2.2 miles turn left on Lake Shore Drive/NY Rt.5. After .3
miles turn right on Central Avenue and go on to the Pier. Look out at the far
break wall. If the Brown Pelican is near the left (west) end of the far
break wall to get a closer look From the Pier turn right on Lake Shore
Drive. After a little more than a mile turn Right on POINT DRIVE going to
where it starts to make a left turn look right across the beach towars the
far break wall. Some people have walked the beach then the breakwall back to
the white with red rangelite at the harbor entrance. From there the pelican
is only about 50 yards distance.

Best Wishes for Great Birding,
