2017-09-12 Thread Earthquest Canada via ONTBIRDS
Greetings all:

While conducting vegetation surveys I spotted 11 Nighthawks foraging over
Ruthven around 4:30 pm today. They were traveling in a group heading east over
the Grand River.

To get to Ruthven take Highway #3 to Cayuga. Turn north onto Highway #54 and
continue driving several kilometers to the entrance of Ruthven. Turn left and
drive to the parking lot at the back. There is a bird banding station run by
Rick Ludkin of Haldimand Bird Observatory as well.

[Ontbirds] Common Nighthawks in Toronto's High Park

2014-08-24 Thread Emily Rondel via ONTBIRDS
For the last week, I have been monitoring the Common Nighthawk migration
over High Park with the help of a few wonderful volunteers. We have had
decent numbers of Common Nighthawks every night, with a maximum observed
number of 250 on Thursday the 21st. Our smallest count was just 35
individuals on August 18th. Also observed are good nightly numbers of
Chimney Swifts, Barn Swallows etc.

This Monday the 25th of August, Bird Studies Canada and the High Park
Nature Centre will be hosting an open Nighthawk monitoring night. Everyone
is welcome to join us on Hawk Hill in High Park, just north of the
Grenadier Restaurant parking lot. We'll begin around 6:00 pm. Bring a lawn
chair if you have one!

Actually in Concord, but who knows where that is? For the past three nights
nighthawks have been doing their aerial acrobatics over our house just west

This is a typical event here at this time each year and as usual the birds
show up between about 6:45pm and 8pm.

Really this is just a reminder to look out for this species now.

Although numbers are small compared to Glenn Coady's 628 observed on Aug 30,
2008 between 5:45 and 8:30, 117 migrating Common Nighthawks were observed
from 7:40 to 8:30 PM tonight, Tuesday Aug 31, 2010.

They were flying south to south-west and were observed from the balcony of
my 6th floor condo which faces north-east near Lawrence and Avenue road in
North Toronto.

7:40 to 7:5064
7:50 to 8:00 9
8:00 to 8:1035
8:10 to 8:20 9
8:20 to 8:30 0

Two additional Common Nighthawks were observed and did not appear to be
migrating (they moved north-east).

Rock Pigeons and European Starlings flew through during this time period-
nighthawks were separated from these and other birds because of their
erratic flight pattern and their shape.

[Ontbirds]Common Nighthawks - London

2007-08-29 Thread John Luke Wheatley
Monday night I enjoyed the erratic flight of a foraging flock of at least 20
common nighthawks over Chesham Park in Northwest London.  They began around
6:30, and slowly moved to the Southeast around 7:30.  It was my first
experience with nighthawks in flight, and it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Chesham Park is in Northwest London,  South of Sarnia Rd. between Western and
Wonderland roads.  Take Castlegrove blvd. South from Sarnia Rd.  There is a
large parking lot on the North side.

[Ontbirds]Common Nighthawks near Kingston

2007-08-26 Thread Paul Mackenzie
August 26 from 7.00 - 7.30 pm a large congregation of Common
Nighthawks at the Howe Island ferry crossing just west of Kingston
(south end of Joyceville Road) ; moving west some possibly crossing
to Wolfe island; I counted 96 and surely missed many in the largest
scattered flock, and then counted an additional 40 in groups of 2-5
as I drove east on Howe Island and they (and many monarchs) were moving west.

[Ontbirds]Common Nighthawks in Toronto

2007-06-28 Thread Jay Peterson

Hello ontbirders,

I have seen few reports of Common Nighthawks this year and had little luck
myself when travelling around. In Toronto, it took about two weeks later
than usual, but I am finally hearing on a consistent basis, Nighthawks
calling from College street and McCaul (one block west of University
avenue). I have heard them calling as well in the Dundas and Sherbourne area
(though I run through that area at night). Also by my house near Sherbourne
and Wellesley street East. So, those wanting this bird as an annual lister
can be sure there are some nesting downtown. I have Chimney Swifts outside
here at Sherbourne and Wellesley every night as well, and a Peregrine Falcon
making rounds every day from the top of the nearby white apartment building
on Homewood Avenue. Any questions, please feel free to e-mail me privately.

Good birding,
