[Ontbirds] Red necked phalarope Toronto

Pointed out to Owen by a non-birder who had "never seen that bird before" Owen
Strickland and I observed and photographed at close range late Saturday
afternoon a Red-necked Phalarope at Tommy Thompson park in Toronto.

The bird was right off the tip at the lighthouse no more than 3 to 5 meters
offshore. When I left at five to six the bird was still present (sorry Owen, it
was still there).

Tommy Thompson park juts into Lake Ontario at the foot of Leslie at just east
of the downtown core.

Please note it is roughly a five kilometre one way walk or bike to the
lighthouse from the entry.

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalarope - Nonquon Sewage Lagoons (Port Perry)

2015-09-19 Thread Brian Bailey
I opted to make a side trip on my way home from Peterborough this afternoon
and drop in at the Nonquon Sewage Lagoons. Water levels are high in all of
the lagoons and I had already resigned myself to the idea that it was a
wasted trip when I spotted a small whitish thing floating in the fourth
lagoon. I could see with binoculars it was a bird and with a scope that it
was a phalarope, but I had to get closer to be sure which one (Red-necked).

It was almost dusk when I found it. Hopefully it will still be there
tomorrow. In this afternoon's windy, cloudy conditions, it was very
difficult to spot, even when you knew it was out there because it blended
in so well. It was swimming and feeding the entire time I watched it.

If you don't already have a permit for the lagoons, you are probably out of
luck until Monday, but here are Geoff Carpentiers directions and
instructions:

Permits must be purchased in advance of entering the lagoons. Permits can
be obtained from 605 Rossland Rd., Whitby, or at the Scugog Waste Transfer
Station, 1623 Reach Street, Port Perry. An electronic version of the
Nonquon Sewage
Lagoon Birder Permit is available in PDF format at
http://www.durham.ca/finance.asp?nr=/departments/finance/financeinside.htm

.
Nonquon Sewage Lagoon Birder Permits are available for $10 per permit.
Cheques will only be accepted at Regional Headquarters. Payment by cash
only at the Scugog Waste Transfer Station.

Completed Applications should be forwarded to: Finance Department -
Insurance & Risk Management, 605 Rossland Road E., Whitby, ON L1N 6A3

The lagoons are located one road north of the transfer site on Concession
Rd. 8 [don't get confused as, despite the fact that these roads are both
numbered "8", they are two different roads - one is a regional paved road,
the other a dirt concession road.]. Access to the lagoons is from the east
end of Conc. 8 only as the bridge is out west of the lagoons.

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalarope - Winchester lagoons

2015-05-22 Thread Josh Vandermeulen
This morning I came across a male Red-necked Phalarope at the Winchester
lagoons. It was in the closest cell to County Road 3 which has lower water
levels creating excellent shorebird habitat. Several hundred individual
shorebirds were present, the majority being Least Sandpipers. A White-rumped
Sandpiper was also present and 3 Snow Geese were in the adjacent cell to the
south.

The lagoons are located off County Road 3, a few km northeast of Winchester in
Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry united counties.

Good birding,

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalarope W.R. Sandpiper at Nonquon

2014-05-22 Thread Steve LaForest via ONTBIRDS
Hello Ontbirders,

On Wednesday May 21, I relocated the breeding adult female Red-necked
Phalarope at the Nonquon Sewage Lagoons. It was in the first cell (the one
closest to the entrance), along the east edge. I saw it anywhere from
about 1/4 to 4/5 of the way south from the entrance road. Its location
varied from the actual shoreline to about 10 m out. The bird was extremely
tame. At times, it appeared to be associating with Blue-winged Teal, but
that may have been an incidental observation. I saw it up to 7:15 pm. The
bird is best seen by walking the berm / path between the easternmost cell
and the next one west (cell 2).
Other shorebirds present included:

1 White-rumped Sandpiper (seen on both the east and west edges of the first
cell)

~15 Least Sandpipers

1 Semipalmated Sandpiper

There were 80 Black Terns present, mostly over cell 2.

 Waterfowl in cell 1 included:

4 Blue-winged Teal

1 American Wigeon (male)

1 Northern Shoveler (male)

2 Lesser Scaup (male)

1 Redhead (male)

1 Ruddy Duck (female)

Other birds of interest included a pair of nesting Ospreys, a Common Raven
and a flock of 5 rather late Yellow-rumped Warblers.

Tetraploid Gray Treefrogs were in full chorus.

Please note that a permit is required to enter the lagoons. For your
information, note that the gate is locked, and it is not possible to enter
without the current (2014) access code (which you will be provided with
when you get your permit!) Permits must be purchased in advance of
entering the lagoons. They cost $10.00 annually.

The permits may be purchased at the Durham Region Transfer Site located at
1623 Reach Rd, Port Perry during the following business hours Tuesday,
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday
from 8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. To get to the transfer station, travel north on
Hwy 12 past Port Perry [Hwy 7A] to the next traffic lights [Regional Road 8
Reach Rd.] and travel east to #1623 on the north side of the road.

The lagoons are located one road north of the transfer site on Concession

To reach the lagoons, from Highway 401, take Simcoe St. (Oshawa) north to
Port Perry. At the north end of town, turn left (west) at the stoplights
onto Concession Road 8, cross Old Simcoe St. and proceed a short distance
to the lagoons, on the south side of the road. Note – do NOT follow
Regional Road 8 (the next road south of Concession 8). Note also that you
CANNOT access the lagoons from the west, because the bridge is permanently
out.

Sorry for the late post.

Good luck. We would most appreciate hearing of any other interesting
sightings for our local Durham birding hotline, run by Rayfield Pye –
thanks.

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalarope etc. - West Perth Wetlands

2013-09-19 Thread Steve Thorpe
Birding in the dense fog was rewarding this morning at West Perth Wetlands in
Mitchell. There were 2 juvenile Red-necked Phalaropes swimming together in the
largest cell. Feeding on the muck in the first cell were 3 Rusty Blackbirds.
Other noteworthy birds were 2 American Golden Plover, 7 Wilson's Snipe,
Pied-billed Grebe, Blackpoll Warbler, and a large falcon that passed over,
likely a Peregrine. In the largest cell were large numbers of dabbling ducks -
widgeon, blacks, Mallard, shoveler, both teal, and Wood Duck. Lots of
shorebirds of many species continue to inhabit the fenced cell and big flocks
of blackbirds move around. Lots to see indeed.

Steve Thorpe

West Perth Wetlands are in Mitchell. From Hwy 8 travel south on Wellington
street to Frank St. Cross over and follow the gravel to the parking lot.
TRAVEL ADVISORY: The International Plowing Match is taking place on the east
side of Mitchell. Your best bet is to approach the wetlands from the south or
the west. From Hwy 23 turn east on Frank Street and follow it to Wellington St.

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalarope and Stilt Sandpiper at Almonte Sewage Ponds

2013-09-04 Thread Michael Runtz
Last evening a brief stop at the southwest pond at the Almonte Sewage Ponds
produced 84 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Stilt Sandpiper, and
1 Red-necked Phalarope. Additionally, a Peregrine Falcon made a brief
appearance.

Directions: The lagoons can only be accessed from the Mississippi Valley
Field Naturalists¹ Trail. From Highway 417, drive south on March Road and
continue through Almonte (Mississippi Mills) to Highway 29. Continue through
the lights south on Wolf Grove Road. If coming from other locations, take
Highway 29 to Mississippi Mills (Almonte) and turn south on Wolf Grove Road.
From Wolf Grove Road turn right (west) at the Auld Kirk Church on Ramsay
Concession 8. About half a km from the intersection you will find the small
sign for the trail on your right. A lookout tower provides a terrific view
of the pond and afternoon provides the best lighting for viewing.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalarope still present at West Perth Wetlands

2012-09-16 Thread Jarmo Jalava
One juvenile Red-necked Phalarope (likely one of the two originally reported a
week ago by Eric Jeffrey, and subsequently by Steve Thorpe), was still present
in the large southeast cell of the West Perth Wetlands this morning. The ten
other shorebird species present included a Stilt Sandpiper.
Four species of swallow included a couple of Bank Swallows, which I haven't
seen in this area in several weeks. Also a bit of a surprise were a male and
two female Ring-necked Ducks, among the moderate numbers and diversity of other
waterfowl.

Yellowlegs, Baird's, Least, Semipalmated, Solitary, and Pectoral Sandpiper,
Killdeer and Semipalmated Plover. The numbers and diversity of waterfowl is
increasing with both teal, shoveler, pintail, Wood Duck, black duck as well as

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalarope - Wildwood Reservoir

2012-08-17 Thread Steve Thorpe

The mudflats near Harrington were very productive today with a Red-necked
Phalarope and a White-rumped Sandpiper being the highlights. Other shorebirds
were Semi-palmated Plover, Killdeer, both yellowlegs, Spotted, Solitary,
Least, and Pectoral Sandpiper. Non-shorebirds of note included 2 Green Heron, 5
Caspian tern, 4 Great Egrets and 2 Bonaparte's Gull. Yesterday Eric Jeffrey had
3 American Golden Plover. Wildwood Reservoir is in northern Oxford County. The
mudflats are both north and south of the DU berm which is on the east side of
Line 31 just north of Road 28 near the village of Harrington. As the water
level drops the best habitat is on the north side and some of the shorebirds
are a good distance away. A scope is necessary. Steve Thorpe Stratford

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalarope - GBSL + Little Gull - Kettle Point

2011-09-14 Thread Maris Apse

Hi all,
I decided to check out the local lagoons again and saw just 2 juvenile
and 1 adult red-necked Phalarope in 2nd/ lagoon. The 3rd lagoon is totally dry
and had no shorebirds at all. A smattering of waterfowl, an American Kestrel
and a few butterflies including a Great Spangled Fritillary.
Thedford lagoons both had high water but the north(left) one held ~15/18
Lesser and 2/3 Greater Yellowlegs. The other lagoon had a Pied-billed Grebe and
both had many waterfowl.
2 juvenile and an adult Little Gull were on the shale/cobble section
between the 2 main 'islands' of the point along with several Bonaparte's Gull
and Common, Forster's and a Black Tern flying about just as the rain
storm/squalls approached. Also had 4/5 Ruddy Turnstone and a Black-bellied
Plover out there but saw only 1 Sanderling to-day - the rest must have moved on.

   Cheers!

Jen Spallin and I found 3 Red-necked Phalarope at the Embrum Sewage Lagoon this
morning. There were no mudflats and thus no other waders, but a good selection
of duck including Ruddy, Redhead, Lesser Scaup and Ring-necked. Casselman
Sewage Lagoon had one cell of good habitat with about 40 Lesser Yellowlegs, 9
Least Sandpiper, 2 Semipalmated Plover, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, 2 Spotted
Sandpiper and a dozen Killdeer. Also present were a Merlin and an adult Bald
Eagle. Directions below from Neilyworld. The lagoons at St. Albert had no
mudflats and no waders.
Embrum SL: From Highway 417, 39 km east of Ottawa, take exit 79 (Regional 5),
labelled Limoges / Embrun. Proceed 2.5 km SSE on Regional 5 to Regional 3 or
Notre Dame Street. Turn right or WSW onto it and drive 2.8 km to St.-Joseph
Road on the east edge of the town of Embrun. Turn left or SSE on it and go 1.5
km to Route 400. Turn left or northeast onto Route 400 and after about a
kilometre the Embrun Sewage Lagoons will be on your left.

Casselman SL: From Highway 417, 52 km east of Ottawa, take the Casselman exit
(66) and go NNW toward the town of Casselman. Drive 1.1 km NNW into town on Rue
Principale, crossing the railway tracks and the main cross-street (St.
Isidore), to turn right or northeast just beyond onto Laurier. Follow Laurier
northeast, then north, 1.8 km to Concession 5 Road (or Route 500). Turn right
or northeast onto it and the road into the Casselman Sewage Lagoons is on your
right almost immediately.

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalarope - Alfred Sewage Lagoon and other Eastern Ontario Lagoons

2010-05-30 Thread KILLEEN
Hello Ontbirders

This afternoon at 3 pm at the Alfred Sewage Lagoons I found 1 female Red-necked
Phalarope in summer plumage swimming in the eastern cell.  Also of interest at
that location was 1 Snow Goose, 2 Wilson`s Phalaropes, 20 Redheads, 50+ Ruddy
Ducks, 1 Lesser Yellowleg, approx. 10 Semiplamated Sandpipers, a Pied-billed
Grebe, along with several Moorhen, Coot, Gadwall, Shoveler and Widgeon.  As
opposed to previous years, the western cell does not have any cattails this
summer and both cells have high water levels with little vegetation.

Of interest at other eastern lagoons I visited :

St-Isidore Lagoons -  6 Ruddy Ducks, 1 American Bittern, 3 Moorhens and 2
Pied-billed Grebes.  Other birders indicated to me that they had heard and seen
a Virginia Rail which I did not get.

Casselman Lagoons - approx. 35 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 5 Least Sandpipers, 5
Dunlin, and few ducks, as water levels are very low in both cells.

Embrun Lagoons - Approx 150 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 5 Least Sandpipers, 20
Semipalmated Plovers, 2 White-rumped Sandpipers, 20 Dunlins, 2 Wilson`s
Phalaropes.  Most shorebirds were in the NW cells offering great views.

Directions to the different sewage lagoons can be found on Neilyworld.com

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalarope - Ridgetown S.L.

2009-10-04 Thread Maris Apse

Hi all,

On our way home from Blenheim S.L. we found a Red-necked Phalarope
associating with 2 Bonaparte's gulls along the east edge of the lagoon directly
in front of the viewing stand. A nice surprise after seeing the Red Phalarope
at Tilbury S.L. earlier in the day and great finish to a super OFO Convention
weekend(despite the weather). Cheers! Maris

Directions to lagoons - from centre of Ridgetown go north on Erie St to Mitton,
turn left and the viewing stand is on the left/south side.

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalarope, Sarnia

2009-09-01 Thread Karl Overman
On Monday, August 31st, Robert Epstein and I were returning from
seeing the Black-throated Sparrow at Port Burwell when we stopped at
the Hiawatha Race Track in Sarnia. In other years I have seen Golden
Plover there but i was dismayed to see that the southern two-thirds
of the grass area to the west of the race track parking lot has been
converted to a golf driving range. We stopped anyway to check it
out. At the northern end of the grassy area, there were small pools
of water in the grass that attracted a few shorebirds-- a couple
Lesser Yellowlegs, 8 Least Sandpipers, a Semipalmated Sandpiper, and
a Red-necked Phalarope. This was at 7:15 p.m. The shorebirds were
still present when we left the area.

The race track is visible from 402 but to get there, exit at Airport
Road and go south to London Road, then go west about a half mile to
the entrance to the race track on the north side of the road. Once on
the race track property go to the NW edge of the parking lot.

[Ontbirds] red-necked phalarope at Tavistock sewage lagoons

2009-08-24 Thread Sharron Skevington

While out birding at Tavistock this PM, I managed to locate a Red-
necked phalarope at the local sewage lagoons. The bird was feeding at
a bubbler on the south west lagoon. Also present were 4 Greater
yellowlegs, 7 Lesser yellowlegs, 5 Spotted sandpipers, 6 Killdeer, 31
Mallards and 5 Green-winged Teal.

To find the lagoons, head to the main intersection in
Tavistock (intersection of highway 59 and county roads
26 and 22). At this main intersection, turn east. Then
take the 3rd right (south). After about 200 meters the

road turns left (east) and runs along the north
boundary of a cemetary. Park here and walk along the
southwest edge of the cemetary to the lagoons.
Crossing a fence is necessary. I do not know the
current status of the lagoons with respect to

trespassing.

[Ontbirds]Red-necked Phalarope, Little Gull Cobourg harbour Oct.26

2008-10-26 Thread M. Bain
The Purple Sandpiper is still feeding on the algae at the SW corner of
Cobourg harbour, but just before 3pm a moulting juv. Red-necked Phalarope
flew in from the lake and is bobbing around at the edge of the algae near
the Purple. A winter adult Little Gull joined a group of about 35 Boneys
flying in and out of the harbour.
The phalarope is a difficult one and caused considerable discussion among
the fairly august group of birders assembled - the bill seems a bit too
thick for Red-necked, but no pale at the base, and there seems to be a lot
of unstreaked pale gray in the scapulars, but the general consensus remains
Red-necked rather than Red.
I hate to leave the harbour in case something else amazing flies in off the
storm-tossed lake.

Directions:
Exit Hwy.401 at Division Street, Exit 474, and drive south to the harbour.
Drive round the north edge of the harbour for free parking on the west side,
and walk out on the west headland.

[Ontbirds]Red-necked Phalarope - East of Ottawa

2008-08-14 Thread ohmkid
Hello Ontbirders

Today, at around noon, while birding with Tony Beck, there was a juvenile
Red-necked Phalarope swimming around in one of the cells at Casselman Lagoons.
Also seen at the lagoons (though not much shorebird habitat), there was a small
flock (around 8) of Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, and
a variety of ducks: Ruddy Duck, Ring-necked Duck, Northern Pintail, Northern
Shoveler, Wood Duck, and Green-winged and Blue-winged Teal.

At the Dignard Constructed Wetland, there were 3+ Solitary Sandpipers and a few
Spotted Sandpipers.

Also, along Magladry Rd. (near Dunning Rd.), there was a male Indigo Bunting
providing great looks and vocalizations.

[Ontbirds]Red-necked Phalarope At Holland Landing

2006-08-20 Thread Eleanor Beagan
The Red-necked Phalarope was in the last cell of the Holland Landing lagoons
this afternoon. There were many peeps - mostly Least Sandpipers, a few
Short-billed Dowitcher, many Lesser Yellowlegs, several Killdeer and one
Semipalmated Plover.

DIRECTIONS: ( From Ron Fleming) The Holland Landing lagoons are just north
of Newmarket, which in turn is about 30 minutes directly north of Toronto.
From Davis Drive/Hwy.9 in mid-Newmarket, turn north at the lights on Yonge
Street (the Upper Canada Mall will be on the NW side of this busy
intersection). Drive past all the big box stores in the north part of
Newmarket (past Tim Horton's, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Future Shop,
Costco, Silvercity Cinemas, etc.) and past the Victory Church to the
stoplights beside Brooklin Concrete and the Newmarket Inn (this is about 2
km north of Green Lane).

Turn right into Holland Landing and follow the curving descent to the lights
at the bridge (don't take the left near the bottom of the hill). The bridge
crosses the railway tracks, then the East Holland River. Go north past
Mount Albert Rd. You will be on Old Yonge Street. Keep going north through
town, past Beckett Ave. You will go through a little curve in the road
where there are conifer stands on both sides, then you will pass Doane Rd.
on the right. About a km after that you will see two white wagon wheels and
a Maximum 60 sign; this is Cedar St. Turn right (east) and follow it to the
dead end.

[Ontbirds] Red-necked Phalarope-Cedar Bay between Fort Erie and Port Colburne

2005-09-04 Thread john black
Kayo Roy and I had a Red-necked Phalarope on the beach to the east
of Pinecrest Road at 11:00 PM today.. Also present were between 10 and
12 Baird's Sandpipers, an assortment of other peep, and two
Sanderlings. At Jaeger Rocks, west of Fort Erie, there were 8 American
Golden Plovers on the beach.

Pinecrest Road can be reached by travelling west from Fort Erie
along Highway 3. In Gasline the road curves to the north and a sharp
turn left will put you on Kilaly Road. Pinecrest is the first road west
on Kilaly. Turn south on Pinecrest and drive to the end. Then walk out
to the east (left) on the rocky shore and search for shorebirds. The
best shorebird spot has been in the rocky area south of the large patch
of grasses and plants about 100 meters down the rocky beach, just
before you reach the algae covered sand beach. Jaeger Rocks can be
reached by travelling along the shoreline from Fort Erie, following the
shoreline by past the Fort, and stopping just before the houses on the
left where you have an unobstructed view of the rocky shore.

Although I continue to strike out locally in my search for good shorebirds (eg. finding nothing but three Killdeer after driving over to the Tottenham sod farms this morning), I'm finding some consolation in happening upon a few decent raptors.

For the second day in a row I lucked into a Merlin, this time at the Schomberg lagoons
west of Newmarket. When I first arrived at 9:30 a.m. a small-ish raptor was silhouetted
atop one of the hydro poles on the north side of the lagoons. It flew south across the
second pond as I approached, showing itself to be a dark falcon with a boldly banded
tail. Eventually it returned to the same perch, but with the sun now behind me I was
able to get much better looks through my scope. The bird - a female/juv. type - showed
dark brown feathering simliar to yesterday's Merlin at Holland Landing (which I believe
to be a taiga female due to its brawny size and chocolate colouration), but it was not as
thickly barred in the chest. For those interested in bird behaviour, it was
shuffling its feet quite a bit and wiping its beak along the top and sides of
the wooden pole on which it was perched.

While I was walking along the southern end of the property (heading back to the
west), my attention was drawn to a medium-sized raptor flying low over the
grassy strip between the lagoons and the row of trees on the fenceline. I
assumed it would turn out to be a Harrier, but when I got my binoculars up and
followed it across my line of vision eastward, I was surprised to see that it
was a juvenile Goshawk, heavily streaked below, sporting a fairly distinct
white supercilium and a zig-zag patterned tail with a white tip. It flew out
of sight behind the long hill in the SE corner of the property and did not
reappear.

As for shorebirds, there were about 40 Lesser Yellowlegs scattered around the
three lagoons, one juv. Greater Yellowlegs, two Solitary Sandpipers, four Least
Sandpipers, several Killdeer and Spotted Sandpipers, about 30 Blue-winged Teal,
and a single Green Heron (first pond).

At the McKenzie Marsh in Aurora today there were six Great Blue Herons, two
Black-crowned Night Herons (one ad., one juv.), one Common Moorhen in basic
plumage, and a pair of noisy Belted Kingfishers.

I just talked to Jean who's a member of a crew of eight surveying the birds
and vegetation along the south coast of James Bay. The project is headed up
by research scientist Ken Abraham of the Ministry of Natural Resources
(MNR). They're comparing vegetation changes with studies done 30 years ago.
Jean has the lucky job of surveying the shorebirds. The crew is staying at
the MNR staff house in Moosonee and flying by helicopter to different
points every day along the coast. As I get daily reports, I'll post to
Ontbirds.

Today along 1 km of coast 8 km west of Netitishi Point on James Bay:

Black-bellied Plover, 1 adult on tidal flats
Semipalmated Plover, 225 adults on tidal flats
Greater Yellowlegs, 30 adults and juveniles
Lesser Yellowlegs 15 adults and juveniles
Hudsonian Godwit, 50 molting adults on tidal flats, some in almost full
alternate plumage and others almost in basic plumage
Ruddy Turnstone, 1 adult
Semipalmated Sandpiper, 200 adults and 10 juveniles
Least Sandpiper, 5 adults and 30 juveniles at edge of vegetation in pools
and along muddy creeks
White-rumped Sandpiper, 300 molting adults on tidal flats - 800 yesterday
at another location. This is the commonest shorebird.
Pectoral Sandpiper, 50 adults in same habitat as the Leasts

They also had lots of Yellow Rails and Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrows.

Happy birding,
