[ONTBIRDS]Western Tanager, Ottawa
Hi folks, The Western Tanager continues to be seen in the area off Gillespie Crescent as outlined previously. However, after hearing from the community that they are getting frustrated with people looking towards their homes, we have come up with a new plan for managing people around the site. Here is the plan going forward along with a request for help. 1. Yellow tape and signs have been put up requesting that people not approach the feeders near the homes. 2. New feeders have been erected about 30m north of the ‘sunshine feeder’ where people had been focussing their attention. Here is what we would like from you: 1. Be mindful of the impact that optics have in the eyes of folks unfamiliar with binoculars and cameras when they are pointed in their direction. Please do not bird within sight of people’s homes, and encourage others to do the same. 2. Please add to the feeder array. We would like to have a table feeder like the one on Hilda Road if anyone has the skills to make one. We would love to have people bring food for the bird, including mixed seed with a lot of white millet in it, fruit, suet rendered with mealworms in it. 3. If someone is willing to bring a metal garbage can that we can put donated bird seed in that would be awesome. 4. If you have time to volunteer, we need ambassadors on sight the next 2 or 3 days to help inform people of the changes and get them used to the new plan. Please dm, message or email Jeff Skevington or Aaron Hywarren if you want to volunteer. Thanks! [ONTBIRDS]Western Tanager in Ottawa
Hi everyone, Jon Ruddy was recently alerted to a Western Tanager at a feeder in Ottawa. We met with the homeowners and determined that the bird is visiting less than daily so we enlisted a few OFO ambassadors to try to see if we could find where it spends more time. Vincent Fyson found it this morning in an NCC green space and it has been seen a few times since. As a result, we can share this widely. The bird is near a creek in this area: https://maps.app.goo.gl/xGRbiH6z1c419ND48?g_st=ic Please park on Gillespie and walk in along the creek from here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ueHe598Di9rq9pKn9?g_st=ic Note that the trail is very icy. There is also a Gray Catbird and Carolina Wren. The Western Tanager is a male and has been present since Nov 27th! I have put feeders up at the coordinates above (courtesy of Wild Birds Unlimited in Kanata!). If you have time, perhaps someone can make up a suet mealworm mix and put up some more feeder options here. Good luck! [ONTBIRDS]Western Tanager in Timmins
Good afternoon, A Western Tanager (male) was found this morning by David M. Houston and continues this afternoon in Timmins (Northern Ontario, Cochrane District). It is the first record for Timmins (to the best of my knowledge) It was catching insects from the poplars near a private residence along Lakeshore rd near Gillies Lake Conservation Area's beach and playground. A few of us just observed it from the road with the owner's permission. OBRC report will be submitted shortly. Other notable sightings in Timmins today: A Ruddy Duck at Porcupine Lake's White Waterfront and 3 American White Pelicans at Kamiskotia Lake. [Ontbirds] Western Tanager - Echo Bay, Ontario
Hi all, I had a female Western Tanager in my yard this morning. It was feeding on the oranges I have out for the orioles. It continues as of 10:30am. I'm located on Echo Lake Road in Echo Bay, which is approximately 15 minutes east of Sault Ste. Marie. Echo Lake Road is the first left off Highway 638, which is accessed from Highway 17 right at Echo Bay. If anyone local wants to look for this bird, send me an email. [Ontbirds] Western Tanager, Mississauga, ON - yes
The Western Tanager was seen again today between about 3:00 to 4:00 at about the same location at Rattray Marsh. It flew back and forth across the trail and perched from just above head height to high in the trees up on the hill behind the houses. There are 3 boardwalks. I think it was the middle one. From Lakeshore take Bexhill Drive south to the end and park on street. Walk down the hill to the path intersection at the signs. Take the main trail to the right for about 100m then follow the trail that goes up to the right. Or From Lakeshore Rd go south on Silver Birch trail to the end. Park on adjacent streets at south end of Silver Birch Trail. Enter the conservation area. Take the trail to the left, then the trail to the right to the second boardwalk. [Ontbirds] Western Tanager: Rattray Marsh Conservation Area
Greetings Birders, The Western Tanager at Rattray Marsh Conservation Area, originally found on Sunday by Samreen Munim and confirmed by Reuven Martin, was still present today. It was still basically in the same general area as it was reported occupying on Sunday and Monday. See details below. Between 3:10 and 4:00 pm today, I was part of a group of five birders following the Tanager as it flitted about and appeared to feed in the warm sunshine high in trees along the upper trail. While it actively moved about, the bird rested occasionally and allowed clear views of its plumage, including the greenish body colour, the prominent white wing bars on darkish (but not quite blackish) wings, the light-coloured bill, and some dark streaking on a greenish back. There were no traces of any orange-red tinge around the face. As per original directions, Rattray Marsh is at the foot of Bexhill Road in Mississauga. Bexhill is half way between Mississauga Road and Southdown Road and runs south from Lakeshore Blvd. Parking is easiest on Gatehouse Drive, which is a quick left from Bexhill at its end point. Walk into the Conservation Area down to the junction with the main trail. Turn right. Walk about 100 metres to the first small trail on the right. Take that trail to a short boardwalk. Watch for Western Tanager in this area, especially on the right, up the hill towards the houses. Patience is required: The bird blends into the leaf colour of most of the trees it roosts in. [Ontbirds] Western Tanager in Dwight
Dear Ontbirders, I am sending this on behalf of Rick and Kelly Stronks, who are hosting a beautiful male Western Tanager on their property on Highway 35 in Dwight. The bird was seen at around 6:00 PM today, and myself, Amanda Guercio, Rick and Kelly watched the bird coming to the feeders at 7:15 PM for about twenty minutes until it went to roost in a nearby cedar. David LeGros then joined us and was able to observe the roosting bird. Rick and Kelly are graciously allowing birders to walk up their driveway to view the bird feeders, which can also be seen from the road. They have set up a barrier to which birders may walk up to. If people walk past this barrier, it will scare all the birds and ruin it for everybody. In an age where more and more people are not allowing birders/photographers to view rarities on their properties due to horror stories, this is a refreshing change and the utmost respect for neighbors, property and other birders is necessary. You can park in front of their garage or along the wide shoulder of HW 35. Watch from the paved road or the driveway up to the barrier. DO NOT leave the pavement, walk on the lawn or neighboring properties. The bird comes to the platform feeder or feeds on the ground with sparrows, then often takes a break in the white pine above the feeders, or goes to a nearby cedar, which is where we saw it last. The cedar is on the neighbors property - DO NOT APPROACH IT. Excellent viewing is had from the road if the bird is in there. Directions: Rick and Kelly are at 24424 Highway 35. It is on the east side of the road, seven kilometres south of the intersection with Highway 60. From Toronto, it is probably fastest to take Highways 400, 11 and then 60 to Highway 35 and go south. East of the city, you can also take the 401 to the 115 and then 35 all the way up. It is a nice drive. Algonquin Park is nearby. Happy Birding! [Ontbirds] Western Tanager - Toronto Islands
I decided to try Ward`s Island this morning and another good decision (not unlike Frank`s) though I only found one real nice bird unlike Frank Pinilla`s multiple finds. The first fall Western Tanager was behind the Ward`s Island washroom (straight out from the ferry dock) in the company of a Red-eyed Vireo and a Pine Warbler. I spent about 5 minutes with this bird before it disappeared into thicker bushes. Later I returned to the area but did not re-find it but there is a lot of cover ( and berries and wild grapes) between the washroom and the beach and the washroom and the Eastern Gap. I also noticed that there were about 1000 Long-tailed Ducks on and over the lake off of the boardwalk as well as 17 White-winged Scoters and I had a fly over of 7 Sanderling. Also seen were Winter Wrens, 10+ Hermit Thrushes and Fox and Tree Sparrows. Directions:- The Toronto Islands docks are at the very south end of Bay Street across Queens Quay. Note:- Monday the 12th was the last ferry service to both Hanlan’s Point and Centre Island until next April. A Ferry schedule is available at the city docks. Sorry for the late post, was waiting for details on the exact location. This morning I was forwarded some photos of a female Western Tanager near Sandfield, Manitoulin. From Hwy 17, take Hwy 6 south from Espanola to Little Current, and keep following it through Manitouwaning. Take a right onto Hwy 542 (about 51km from Little Current), and after 4.6km take a left onto Case Rd. The Bell tower is about 1km down the road on the right. Happy holidays Ontbirders, The Western Tanager was cooperative as it flew around an ice patch with Juncos in basically the same area as it was reported before. What a great winter list bird! Also getting a bit late were 16 Snow Geese overhead in the same area. Two Wild Turkey continue to be seen along Strandherd Avenue walking across the road with pedestrians. [Ontbirds] Western Tanager remains in Oshawa Friday AM
I stopped at Durham Court Park this AM and fairly quickly located the Western Tanager. I walked from the Waverly Street entrance along the paved path to the east, and was close to an entrance leading out to another street (Durham Court?) when I found the tanager. It was with a loose flock that included a cardinal, chickadees, a nuthatch and a White-throated Sparrow. When I viewed the bird it mashing some blackish pulpy material at the tip of its bill, probably a buckthorn berry. [Ontbirds] Western Tanager in Oshawa
Ontbirds subscribers, The female Western Tanager first found on December 16 at Durham Court Park in Oshawa by Otto Peter and Jim McKnight during the Oshawa CBC, was seen by many additional observers this afternoon from 2:20 p.m. onward. In addition to feeding on buckthorn berries in the woods, I saw the bird foraging very often on the ground and in large discarded piles of leaves and rotting wood - presumably seeking spiders and beetles. The only other bird it seemed to be loosely associating with was a Brown Creeper. Most of the time that I was there it was foraging quite low near the fence row separating the park from the homes that border it to the north. [Ontbirds] Western Tanager, Cave Swallows - LONG POINT November 5, 2007
Hello All, The Western Tanager was re-found this morning at the Long Point Bird Observatory's Old Cut field station by George Pond. It was hanging around until about 1300, but is likely still in the area. It is most commonly seen in the Old Cut woodlot property high in the pines, feasting on fermenting grapes and catching the odd fly. The bird is incredibly secretive so it will take a little time and effort if you're going to look for it. There were also 7 Cave Swallows foraging low around the Tip this morning. This makes 10 for the Long Point area so far this fall. Two were observed at the Tip on October 20th, and another single bird at the Tip on November 1st. We have yet to have any on the mainland. Cheers, Stu LPBO is situated on the north shore of lake Erie, in Canada. From Highway 401 or Highway 3, come south on Highway 59 to the north shore of Lake Erie. We're on Old Cut Blvd. on Long Point, just two streets before Highway 59 ends at Long Point Provincial Park. We are the 6th building on the right as you head north on Old Cut Blvd. from Highway 59. [Ontbirds]Western Tanager at Long Point
The female Western Tanager was seen again this morning at the Old Cut Field Station on Long Point. The bird was frequenting the pines behind the banding lab for a couple of hours. Most of the time it fed on grapes high in the treetops but once or twice it dropped to the ground in the vicinity of the feeders behind the lab though it was hard to see what it was feeding on there. From the photos I obtained, it appears to be what Sibley refers to as a pale female. The bird seems quite healthy and it could remain in the area for a few days since there are plenty of grapes for it to eat. Finding it requires a lot of patience watching the thick pinetops for movement as the bird moves from one tree to the next. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds]Western Tanager - Flamborough
On Saturday evening around 7:35 p.m. my wife and I saw a bird fly into the top of a tree by Rock Chapel Road about 150 meters east of Borer's Falls that we believe was a female Western Tanager. We were able to observe it for at least five minutes, and initially thought it was a Scarlet Tanager in non-breeding plumage, but it had one very strong wing-bar and a second, lighter one. Ten minutes later it had gone, and a search for over an hour on Sunday in the area failed to locate it. Rock Chapel Road is 1.6 km west of Clappison's Corners, the intersection of highways 5 and 6, in the former town of Flamborough (now part of Hamilton). A. L. (Sandy) Darling
