[Ontbirds] Yellow Rail - Carden Alvar

2012-05-18 Thread Josh Vandermeulen

At 7:00 PM today Barb Charlton, Hugh Currie, Gerry Shemilt and I heard a Yellow
Rail ticking in the previously reported location, 400 meters north of the
intersection of Wylie and McNamee Roads in the Carden Alvar.

Earlier in the day, Barb and I saw the previously reported Hudsonian Godwit
north of Schomberg. It was still present (along with a White-rumped Sandpiper
and several common species) when we left at 2:30 PM. I took some photos which
I`ll post on my blog (joshvandermeulen.blogspot.com) in the morning.

Directions:

Yellow Rail: Go north of Kirkfield on Kirkfield Road 6 past the liftlock to
McNamee. Turn
right then immediately left onto Wylie Road and go north, 4/10ths of a km of
the west side. Kirkfield is about an hour and 45 minute drive North East of
Toronto.
Ron Pittaway's Carden Alvar Birding Guide is on the OFO website:
http://www.ofo.ca/reportsandarticles/cardenalvar.php

Hudsonian Godwit: From HWY 400, take exit 55 (HWY 9). Travel west on HWY 9,
then turn right after about 7 km onto Regional Road 27 (Bradford Street). The
bird was in a small pond on the west side of the road in the middle of the S
curve.

Good birding,

2012-05-17 Thread Dan Bone
Heard a Yellow Rail ticking today, May 17, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. just where Judy
Kennedy heard one on Monday-- on the Bluebird Ranch on the west side of
Wylie Road, 0.4 kms north of the intersection with McNamee. It seemed to be
about 25 metres off the road.

Didn't have time to go up to Sedge Wren Marsh.

Directions:
Go north of Kirkfield on Kirkfield Road 6 past the liftlock to McNamee. Turn
right then immediately left onto Wylie Road and go north, 4/10ths of a km of

2011-05-07 Thread Greg Stuart

The Yellow Rail reported earlier is still being heard at the marsh on Wylie Rd.
Tonight it could be heard from 8:25 until at least 8:50 to the south of the
bridge on the east side.

Borrowing from Kevin Shackleton's directions in a previous post:
Directions: Hwy/CR 48 to the centre of Kirkfield then north on CR 6 to McNamee
Road where a right turn is made and a short distance travelled to Wylie Road.?
Then turn left and go north to the marsh.

There is a small amount of parking just to the south of the marsh, and please
don't park on the bridge as you will block traffic of anyone wishing to pass.

On Saturday evening 30 April at 8:50 and again at 9:06 p.m., Eleanor
Beagan
and I heard a Yellow Rail at the Sedge Wren Marsh on Wylie Road. It was
ticking about 20 metres west of the bridge. The next 3-4 weeks are the
best time to listen for Yellow Rails as they migrate mainly to the
coastal marshes of James Bay.

Least Bittern: one male seen and heard in the cattail marsh on the south
side of Canal Lake. See yesterday's photos via my signature link.

Loggerhead Shrike: a pair west of Bluebird box 10 on Wylie Road.

Some Other Birds: Upland Sandpiper, Wilson's Snipe perched on posts and
doing aerial displays, Eastern Meadowlark, Eastern Towhee, Brown
Thrasher, Eastern Bluebird, American Bittern, Sora and Virginia Rail
heard at Sedge Wren Marsh, one Marsh Wren (not Sedge Wren) at the Sedge
Wren Marsh. Sedge Wrens should return soon.

Directions: See Ron Pittaway's Carden Alvar Birding Guide on OFO
website.

2007-05-05 Thread Anne Anthony
Maureen Smith and I birded Carden very early this morning (May 5) and heard the
Yellow Rail at the NW corner of the Sedge Wren Marsh on Wylie Rd. American
Bitterns were calling, but no wrens (marsh or sedge). The Loggerhead Shrikes
were behind Bluebird box 10 on Wylie Rd. and their were many Upland Sandpipers
(over 20 seen). There was a Grasshopper Sparrow north (1 km?) of the marsh.
Eastern Kingbirds have arrived in good numbers. Very few warblers, but did
find one nice male Blackburnian. Soras were found on Prospect Rd.

directions: Wylie Rd: From Kirkfield go north on Co. Rd. 6, past the Lift
Lock then east on McNamee and immediately go north on Wylie Rd. Prospect Rd:
From Kirkfield go west on Co. Rd. 48. Prospect is the 2nd concession road to
the south. There are 2 marshes (Sora in both), both north of Eldon Station Rd.

Visited the KFN property for a couple of hours on Saturday am. The Marbled
Godwit was sighted at the back end of the marsh area, need a scope for a
good view. Managed to photograph a Wilson's Phalarope, see link.

Directions:
The property is at the east end of the island. The entrance is at the SE
corner of Lower 40 ft Rd. and South Shore Rd. The ferry is now $8.00
return and leaves Millhaven hourly on the half hour.

I managed to be in Thickson's from 0830 until 0930 on Sunday, May 5-- in that
time some of the birds I saw were Veery (3), Swainson's thrush(1), Hermit
thrush (4), Wood thrush (1), American Redstart (1), Northern Parula (2), HOUSE
WREN, White-crowned Sparrow, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak (2 male, 1 female).

A YELLOW-THROATED VIREO had been seen by Jim Fairchild at the Lynde Shores C.A.
woodlot.

Exit 401 at Thickson Rd. in west Whitby--south toward the lakefront, turning
left on the deadend roadway that skirts along the north side of the forest.

[Ontbirds]Yellow Rail-Carden

2005-05-02 Thread Anne Anthony

Hi All,

This morning at 6:50 a.m., Monday May 2, Maureen Smith and I heard a
Yellow Rail at the Sedge Wren Marsh on Wylie Road in the Carden Plain. A
Loggerhead Shrike was south of Bluebird Box #10. Lots of Upland Sandpipers
and Wilson's Snipe. Our trip was cut short by a broken pair of binoculars
(quickly fixed by Bushnell in Richmond Hill under the warranty) so we didn't
get to look for sparrows.

Directions. Go north from Kirkfield on the Kirkfield Rd under the lift lock
and continue north until the road turn to the left. Here you turn right
onto McNamee Rd and then immediately turn left onto Wylie Rd. Proceed north
to the marsh. Park just before the marsh and walk to the bridge. The rail
was heard to the NW of the bridge.
