[Ontbirds] Gray Partridge, Brantford Airport
Hey Birders, Mike and I ventured down to Brantford to check out the Gray Partridge. While driving along Robinson Road, just past Potruff we spotted the covey of 15 Gray Partridge, hunkered down in the fence row. They were pretty easy to see. Nice to see after a few years of absence. Not too much else, Mike had 2 Northern Shrikes and the Red-shouldered Hawk in Hawkesville. The American Wigeon and Gadwall have been seen within the last two weeks at Conestoga Dam, but were not present this afternoon. Directions: take hwy. 24 south from the 403 to Robinson Road. Turn left (east), go about 1-2 km. At Pottruff (or whatever road it is) start looking on the south side of the road. The birds were in the hedge row, keep an eye out for clumps of dirt. [Ontbirds] GRAY PARTRIDGE, Brantford Airport
Greetings -- Today approximately 10 GRAY PARTRIDGES were huddled together on a ridge in the middle of a cultivated field on the south side of Robinson Road near the intersection with Pottruff Road adjacent to Brantford Airport -- go east on Robinson Road from Hwy 24 (Rest Acres Road). P.S. For anyone considering a "gulling" trip to the Niagara River region, gulls were nearly nonexistent at all the usual spots (Queenston, Adam Beck, above the Falls, etc.) today. [Ontbirds]Gray Partridge, Brantford Airport; R-c Kinglet Burlington - Wed Dec 26
Hello Birders, Today I took a drive out to Brantford Airport to try for Gray Partridge and was rewarded with a small covey of 4 (I think I see them on 1 in 10 tries out there!!). The birds were right in front of the airport terminal along Aviation Road, under a deciduous tree, right beside a large white fuel tank with the word "Diesel" painted on it. They were only about 10m from the road and I got some decent photos. On the way home I stopped in at LaSalle Marina on the north shore of Hamilton Harbour. Here I had 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet with 2 Golden-crowneds. Also here are an amazing number of Trumpeter & Mute Swans (maybe 80+ Trumpeters and 30+ Mutes?), 1 Ring-necked Duck & 12 Canvasback (they were to the west of the marina), 20+ Am. Black Duck, a few White-winged Scoters, 4 Am. Coots and other common winter waterfowl. Happy winter Birding, Frank Pinilla Richmond Hill, ON DIRECTIONS: Brantford Airport - from Hwy 403 just west of Brantford, exit at Rest Acres Rd (Hwy 24), head south to Colborne Rd (Hwy 2) and turn left/east. Watch the fields all around here as the partridge range about. The airport terminal is north of Colborne Rd, turn at York Rd and look all around this area, follow to the terminal where I had the birds today. LaSalle Marina - heading EAST along Hwy 403 in Burlington, exit south along Waterdown Rd, follow past Plains Rd East all the way to the lake. If you are heading Westbound from the Toronto area you must exit at the QEW (towards Niagara) and get off at Plains Rd (I believe) and head west along the north shore of Hamilton Harbour until you reach Lasalle Park Rd/ Waterdown Rd. The Ruby-crowned Kinglet was found along the Waterfront Trail just east of the marina. You will find a boardwalk, the small mixed flock was on the hillside on the north side of the trail a little beyond this boardwalk. The Golden-crowneds calling and feeding up high, the Ruby-crowned was low in the brush. - Sent from My BlackBerry Wireless ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds]Gray Partridge, Brantford Airport
This morning (11:15 am), I saw 7 Gray Partridge at Brantford Airport. They were located at the base of an evergreen tree, one of a row of evergreens between two hangers east of Airport Rd. inside the airport property. They were under the most easterly evergreen. To reach Brantford Airport, drive south on Rest Acres RD. (Highway No. 24) from Highway No. 403 (west of Brantford). Turn left (east) on Colborne St.(Highway No. 53). Turn left on Airport Rd. to the T at York Rd. Turn right and drive a short way and the row of evergreens is on the left. [Ontbirds]Gray Partridge, Brantford Airport
Hi all, I went looking for the GRPA at the Brantford Airport, and refound the 5 individuals in the field adjacent to the Bluebird bus lines parking lot at 11:30. The were relatively easy to see as far as partridge normally are, hunkered down in a low spot. They were located on the north side of Colborne St. W. (old Highway No. 53), opposite of MacGregor Rd., next to the Bluebird Bus property. They were in the grass nest to the Bluebird factory fence; one bird was inside the fence under a bus next to the building. They move around! This area can be reached by travelling south on Highway 24 (Rest Acres RD.) from Highway 403. Turn left (east) on Colborne St. at the traffic lights. Proceed to MacGregor Rd. which runs south from Colborne St. before you reach Airport Rd. going to the airport. Good Birding, Kenny Burrell Heidelberg, Ont.
