[Ontbirds] Eurasian Collared-Dove Albuna Townline and Mersea Rd 5 (northwest of Leamington)

2019-04-21 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
I currently have a Eurasian Collared-Dove at the intersection of Albuna
Townline and Mersea Road 5. This is northwest of the town of Leamington.

From Leamington, take Highway 3 until you get to Albuna Townline and turn north
on Albuna until you get to Mersea Rd 5. It’s singing and is currently on the
hydro wires right at this intersection.

This is right across from the Leisure Lake and Cottage Resort.

Looking at photos of this bird on ebird reports - it's really pale overall,
under-tail coverts are very pale gray, the extent of black at the base of the
under-tail is very limited and the outer web of the outermost tail feather is
white.
African Collared Dove or some variation of such [or hybrid] seems a closer
match than Eurasian. Just my two cents

It was requested of me to elaborate on my earlier email.

The Eurasian Collared Dove was still present and active (associating with one
of a pair of nesting Mourning Doves) at 229 Miller Road in Dutton this morning.
We mainly saw it at the house next door (225). I'm told not everyone is
convinced it is a ECDO so stay tuned until further notice, I guess.

Take 401W to exit 149. Turn right on Currie Rd., turn right on Pioneer Lane,
turn left on Miller Rd.

[Ontbirds] Eurasian Collared Dove - maybe - in Trenton two weeks ago

2017-08-30 Thread Bree, David (MNRF) via ONTBIRDS
Hi

Not really an alert obviously but I had visitors in the park that showed me
pictures of a collared dove in their backyard on Aug 13. It is no longer there
but they live beside Hanna Park on Parkview Heights in Trenton - you can look
up directions as well as I since I have never been there myself. The pictures
are not the best and it looks a little pale for this species so maybe an
escaped bird of some sort. I have sent pictures on to the rare birds
committee. Just a heads up if anyone is in the area to keep an eye out. If
anyone wants to see the pictures email me privately.

Good morning Ontbirders,

A quick side-route to work this morning took me to 1698 Innisfil Beach Road
(Hewitt Creek Farms), and upon turning into the driveway, I immediately
spotted a Eurasian Collared Dove sitting on the wires. I stopped and opened
the windows, within seconds I could hear the 2nd bird calling it's typical
"coo-coo-COO-coo" call. The calling bird then flew towards the barn (and
likely grain on the ground but I didn't drive any further) while the 1st
bird stayed on the wire. The first bird then flew down to the driveway for
a minute or two before flying to where the 2nd bird had landed near the
barn.

Thanks Caleb for letting us know about this/these birds!

I apologize for the late report; I was just waiting to hear back from the

[Ontbirds] Eurasian Collared-Dove, the Coves (Long Point) - Sept. 9th

2016-09-09 Thread Ken Burrell
Hi everyone,

I checked out the Coves this morning at Long Point, hoping for a morning
flight of passerines (moving east-west), and was not disappointed. Not only
were there several hundred warblers moving west along the shoreline, I also
had a Eurasian Collared-Dove flyby at 08:04. The bird appeared to have
landed amongst the houses at the end of the Cove Road, but was not refound,
though there's a decent chance it is still in the area.

As noted above, the morning flight of passerines was excellent, with 20
species of warblers (388 unidentified warblers), lots of Rose-breasted
Grosbeaks and Bobolinks as well. See my eBird checklist for species and
numbers: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S31493708

Directions: from Port Rowan, head west along Lakeshore Road about 10
minutes, past Lee Brown's and the Hahn unit; Cove Road will be on your
left, dead-ending at the lake.

The long-staying Collared Dove is still at the same spot in Guelph; I found
it just before noon today right where it was supposed to be, on a rooftop
at the corner of Stephanie Drive and Cherrywood Drive, after searching the
neighbourhood for twenty-five minutes.

To see the dove, from the 401 take Highway 6 north to Guelph; turn left at
Paisley Road, then left again at Elmira Road, and immediately left again
onto Stephanie Drive. Cherrywood Drive is the very next street on the
right, and the bird has generally been seen within a hundred metre or so
radius of this intersection.

[Ontbirds] Eurasian Collared-Dove --Leamington

2015-03-15 Thread Jeremy Hatt
I just received a call from Dan Loncke who, with his wife Mary, saw a Eurasian
Collared-Dove at Gore Hill Public School on Seacliff Drive, east of Leamington.

He saw a pair of doves on the wires and confirmed at least one as Eurasian
Collared but they flew soon after and he could only relocate one bird. The
probability is high that the second bird was also a collared-dove. These
individuals have been in the same vicinity since August of 2014.

The Eurasian Collared-Dove found yesterday just east of Gorehill Public School
on Seacliffe Drive east of Leamington is still in the same location this
afternoon. I relocated the bird on the hydro wires here. It has flown into the
backyard trees of a house but will hopefully stay around a while longer. Try
scanning the wires in the vicinity.

Jeremy

Jeremy Bensette, Lindsey and Michelle Valliant and I are currently watching
a Eurasian Collard-Dove at the Gore Hill public school which is east of
Leamington on Seacliff drive east.

The bird has been near the baseball diamond and on the telephone wires
along Seacliff Drive.

Good luck!

Understandably, the incipient fall bird migration at Presqu'ile
Provincial Park has stalled pending the return of more favourable
weather. More than compensating for the shortage of migrants, however,
was the discovery of a rare species that had not put in an appearance at
Presqu'ile since the spring of 1999.

A female Long-tailed Duck was in Lake Ontario opposite the woodpile
marsh on Sunday and Monday, and another, or perhaps the same one, was
near the lighthouse on Monday. Apart from the family of Common Loons
that can be seen off the calf pasture on most days, there was also a
group of seven of that species off Chatterton Point on July 31. Great
Egrets have been seen almost every day this week. Among the seven seen
by one observer on August 2 was a group of three standing at the
north-west corner of High Bluff Island, where they have been known to
congregate at this time of year. Ospreys are the only raptors sighted
this week.

After a flurry of shorebirds leading up to last weekend, the migration
of that Presqu'ile specialty has ground to a virtual halt. Over the
past four days, only six species have been seen in the Park, but one of
them has been the feature attraction of the week. A Marbled Godwit that
first showed up on Sunday (July 29) has been in almost exactly the same
spot every day since then. It feeds along a short stretch of the
natural beach that can be accessed from lookout 2 on the Owen Point
trail. Observers have been advised by the Park to cross the rope
barrier at lookout 2 if necessary to locate the bird but are cautioned
not to proceed along the beach beyond the lookout. The Ruddy Turnstone
and Pectoral Sandpiper seen on July 30 have not been seen since then,
leaving only one or two Semipalmated Plovers, Killdeers, and Spotted
Sandpipers since Monday. Over 200 noisy Caspian Terns are now at Owen
Point, and a Forster's Tern was there on July 27.

Among the five species of woodpeckers present this week were a male
Red-bellied Woodpecker at 83 Bayshore Road and a pair of Pileated
Woodpeckers at the calf pasture, both on August 2. The former bird
renewed suspicion that the species nests somewhere in the Park, but if
it does it certainly manages to keep quiet and out of sight after the
end of May. Another bird that has been elusive through most of this
summer is the Carolina Wren that has been heard periodically, including
on August 1, along the road from the Park store to the bird sightings
board, usually midway along that stretch.

The warbler migration should be picking up by this time next week. In
the meantime, the only ones worth noting have been a Nashville Warbler
at the lighthouse and a Northern Waterthrush at Owen Point, both on July
30. A male and a female Mourning Warbler coming to a bird bath at 83
Bayshore Road are probably resident birds. A Rose-breasted Grosbeak was
accompanied by a young one at that same location.

To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton.
Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid
that is available at the Park gate. Access to the offshore islands is
restricted at this time of year to prevent disturbance to the colonial
nesting birds there.

The Eurasian Collared-dove was easily seen at the corner of Fifty Point and
Ridge Road this am. It was never more than 200 feet from the actual
intersection and seemed to favour the SW corner possibly attending a feeder at
the rear of the house located there. Also look on the roof and chimney of this
same house. If not there check the overhead wires on the NE corner and the top
of a tree 100 feet east of the SE corner. It called almost constantly.

It was very active and flew often but as stated above, remained located
essentially as described.

The Dove can be easily be located at the intersection of Fifty Rd and

Good morning

Yesterday morning Ian Cannell and I drove up to Sauble Beach to hopefully see
the Piping Plovers. We arrived at the beach and to our dismay we were informed
by the Piping Plover Project Coordinator Stewart Nutt that the birds had not
been seen at all so far. We did some checking by walking the northern end of
the beach, looking and listening but we had no luck. We again stopped to talk
to Stewart and after Ian exchanged cell phone numbers we left and started north
for the Bruce Peninsula with the intension of returning later in the day to try
again.

We made our way north and while at Isaac Lake north of Wiarton Ian's phone
rang and it was Stewart who informed us that they had found the Plovers so we
immediately headed back down to Sauble Beach, found Stewart and there in front
of him were 4 Piping Plovers (the male and 3 fledglings). We observed the birds
for some time and while talking to Stewart he told us that the young birds were
making short flights from the waters edge to the sand dunes already (about 200
yards) so it would probably not be very long from now that the birds would head
south (actually any day now) so if you want to see these great and rare little
birds you had better go now.

These birds at this time were at the far northern end of the beach but Stewart
had found them about 2 1/2 kms south of that area of the beach and stayed with
them as they moved north along the waters edge so if you go then be aware that
they range a long way and the beach is long and gets very crowded with people
after 10 am. Good luck if you go.

Ian and I want to give a great big thank you to Stewart Nutt for the great and
kind help in seeing these birds and for the very informative info as well as
the great job that he and others have done to protect these little guys.

After very satisfying looks at the Piping Plovers we again headed north onto
the Bruce Peninsula and following are some of the birds we found.

Green Herons, Black-crowned night-Herons, Osprey, Virginia Rail, Sandhill
Crane (an adult with 2 almost grown chicks), Upland Sandpiper, an American
Woodcock on the roadside (with possible young but an auto came by and spooked
them/it), Caspian, Forster's and Common Terns, Black-billed Cuckoo, Sapsuckers,
Olive-sided, Willow and Least Flycatchers, Phoebes and Pewees and many E.
Kingbirds, Common Ravens, House Wrens and Winter Wrens, Eastern Bluebirds (on
almost any road we traveled), Thrasher, Warbling, Philadelphia and Red-eyed
Vireos, some Warblers, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Indigo Buntings, Dickcis

[Ontbirds]HNC Rare Bird Report - Eurasian Collared Dove

2007-07-19 Thread Cheryl Edgecombe
The Eurasian Collared Dove was perched atop the spruce tree on the north
east corner of Fifty Road and Ridge Road this morning at 8:40 a.m.. Thanks
to Stu Mackenzie for this excellent find!

Directions as per Stu Mackenzie:

Take the QEW to Fifty Rd., and head south toward the Niagara Escarpment.
Fifty Rd. ends at Ridge Rd. on the top of the escarpment where it turns into
Eleventh Rd. The bird is located at this intersection. It likes to sit on
any of the adjacent wires,
the chimney of the red brick house on the south-east corner, his
neighbors tv antenna, and sang from the top of the tall spruces on the
north east side. The bird is quite active, singing fairly regularly and
performing flight displays.

Cheers,
Cheryl Edgecombe

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday afternoon I stumbled upon, and had a brief look at a Streptopelia
Dove at the top of the escarpment at the end of Fifty Rd. I re-found the bird
around 1800 and sure enough it was a Eurasian Collared Dove ! - A first for the
Hamilton Birding Circle. I took some decent pictures and was lucky enough to
hear it singing. The owner of the property on the south east corner mentioned
that it had been there for as long as three months so it's likely still there.

The bird was observed again this morning (18/07/07) by Bob Curry, Glenda
Slessor, Barry Cherriere, Kevin McLaughlin, and Rob Waldhuber.

Take the QEW to Fifty Rd., and head south toward the Niagara Escarpment. Fifty
Rd. ends at Ridge Rd. on the top of the escarpment where it turns into Eleventh
Rd. The bird is located at this intersection. It likes to sit on any of the
adjacent wires,

performing flight displays.

Good Birding,

Actually this is the second ECDO for the Hamilton Study Area. As indicated
on page 249 of Birds of Hamilton, John Keenleyside found one at his home in
Burlington on 24 June 1998 - the third accepted record for the province. I
hardly have to tell you authors out there how chastening it is to find how
few birders check your book.

[Ontbirds]?? Eurasian Collared Dove in Innisfil, ON

2007-06-08 Thread Camp Chief
To day, June 8th, the subject bird was observed three times and the last
time was at about 7.15 p.m. by David Randle and accompanied by Bruce Wilson
of Barrie and his wife.

We had the opportunity to clearly view the underside of this bird when it
flew up onto hydro lines and the underside was almost uniformly white while
the bird was at rest.

Mr. Wilson's opinion is that the subject bird is in fact a Ringed
Turtle-Dove and with all of the photos, web page links and references that
have been supplied to me over the past few days, I am satisfied with and
share his identification.

I would like to express my thanks to all those who contacted me to share
thoughts, opinions, photos and web page references. I will continue to
observe this bird for as long as it is around.

The "Ring neck dove" from the other website you have photos of is just one
of hundreds of colour variations the Ring neck dove comes in. it looks
like your bird may be what they call a "wild Type" ring neck dove. from the
photos the under parts of your dove look white which confirms above. an
escapee.

Eurasian Collared Dove numbers should be dropping as there is a open season
on them in the states that have regulated Dove hunting.

hope this helps.

The subject bird was seen again today, by David Randle on my property in
the

Sandy Cove area of Innisfil, ON at about 11.50 a.m.

The sighting was witnessed by my two neighbours - I was out looking to see
if I could see it, and I called my neighbours over when I did see it.

It was halfway up a small birch tree on the front of my property. I was
able to shoot one additional photo, which is not of much further help and
not as good a shot as those shown previously.

click "birds")

I was endeavouring to get underneath the bird to get a photo of the
underside when someone locally slammed a car door and it took off and flew
away. However, as it flew away, without photo confirmation, I can say that
the rear underside was splayed out, with white feathers to the outside and
dark or black feathers running from about the centre of the bird backwards
to the rear on the inside of the underside. I am sorry I am not familiar
enough with terms to be able to tell you in proper terminology.

I will check back again later to see if it has returned.

In the effort to identify this bird, someone drew my attention to a web
site

showing the differences between the Eurasian CD and Ringed TD at
http://esaudubon.org/photos/eurasian_collared_dove.htm . Using only those
photos I would have to say the bird I am seeing here is much more like the
photo displayed of the Eurasian than of the ringed.

[Ontbirds] Possible Eurasian Collared-dove - Innisfil, near Barrie, Ontario

2007-06-07 Thread Camp Chief
My name is David Randle and I live the Sandy Cove area of Innisfil, Ontario.
I am not a serious birdwatcher, but I love to feed and watch them. I am not
a birding expert and make no pretension to be.

On May 29, May 30, June 3 and on twice on June 6, 2007, I have seen a
unknown dove on my residence property on Sandy Cove Drive in Innisfil, about
½ mile east of Cook’s Bay (Lake Simcoe) just north of Lockhart Road.

I am used to having a number of mourning doves around the property and while
I often look at them I do not “study” them. On May 29th in the mid day
time, I saw a dove on my deck which I thought had something caught around
its neck. A closer examination revealed that it was a black “collar”, from
one side, round the back of the neck to the other side, but not in the front
- almost like a horseshoe. I knew this was something different from the
other mourning doves, but I did not know what. I checked in the only
birding book I have – The ROM Birds of Ontario book, and found no picture
of what I had seen, but saw a report of an Eurasian Collared-Dove without a
picture. The description was similar to what I had seen. I checked the
name on the Internet and found some photographs of this dove, which again
were similar to what I had seen. Unfortunately, I did not have my camera at
home at that time. I saw the dove again the next day – May 30th, but I was
still ignorant of the scarcity of this dove. I saw it again I believe on
June 3rd.

On June 6th, when I had my camera back, I saw the dove again, briefly in a
tree on my property and was able to get one photo before it flew away. This
was just after 10 a.m. I was quite startled to see it again shortly after
noon sitting on top of a hanging feeder pole and I got my camera and took 11
more pictures of it. It did not seem as afraid of me as the normal mourning
doves, and allowed me within 10 feet before any sort of alarm was
noticeable. It even appeared to be posing for the photos. Eventually it
flew onto a nearby tree and sat there for the rest of the afternoon, joined
by a mourning dove a little later. Totally it was in the tree for about 3
hours before I noticed it had gone.

If it is the same bird I have seen now on four different days, then I
believe it is a female, because I have seen what I take to be a male
mourning dove attempting to mate with it.

I have posted the photos that I took at http://www.scoutscan.net/dgr click
on “birds” and it will be at the top of the page as the most recent notable
sighting. They are each large files so they might take a few seconds to
download, but they should also be capable of enlargement. The first four
pictures do not show the “collar” very well, but the remainder do.

I am not experienced or knowledgeable enough to say what this dove is, but
several people have suggested that it is an Eurasian Collared-Dove, while a
couple of others seem to think it is a ringed turtle-dove.

I have been guided that the rear of the underside is quite important in
distinguishing between these doves and if I am fortunate enough to see it
again I will see if I can concentrate on the underside and report back and
hopefully get a photo that might help positively identify it one way or the
other. I have also be advised that it might be an “escapee” or “release”
and so on June 6th at one point I held my arm and hand outstretched and
while it did not seem to be afraid of that, it did not seem to want to use
my hand or arm as a perch either. Originally I had thought it to be the
same size as a mourning dove, but on June 6th, I felt it was definitely
bigger than a mourning dove. It had a light greyish, almost pinkish front,
with sandy brown sides and back with browner wing feathers.

In the meantime, I would appreciate any guidance that anyone would seek to
offer at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I was asked to post this information for the general interest of all.

[Ontbirds]Eurasian Collared Dove in Guelph - NOT

2007-05-18 Thread Karl & Kathy Konze

Hi all,

I decided to look for the dove again this morning and easily heard it
at the same location. However, armed with more familiarity with their
song, I can now say that the bird does NOT sound like a Eurasian
Collared Dove after all, but more like a Ringed Turtle Dove. It did
not have the characteristic trisyllabic pattern but was more rolling
in nature and two-parted. I didn't actually see the bird but feel
confident it is not a Eurasian Collared Dove. Ah well, maybe next time!

Rondeau Bird Report – Kirtland’s Warbler May 18, 2007

A male Kirtland’s Warbler was seen and heard singing at 9:15 a.m. today
(Friday May 18) on the Spicebush Trail. It was observed at Boardwalk ‘D’.
The bird was singing for an extended period in a tall tree (ash sp.?) with
the leaves just barely emerging, and then flew down to the left. This tree
is to the left (~~west) of the trail. The bird was seen by a very
experienced observer (Blake Mann) who has seen and heard this species
previously.

Directions: From the gate, drive south ~2 km on Rondeau Road to the
Spicebush Trail parking lot (on the right – west side). If the parking lot
is full, please park carefully along the roadside. The bird is on Boardwalk
‘D’, about ½ km from the parking lot. When you leave the parking lot, walk
west across the first long boardwalk. The trail then jogs briefly to the
right. Turn left on the next boardwalk (Boardwalk ‘B’), just before you
reach the ‘Nan Barrett’ bench. Cross this short boardwalk, and the next one
(Boardwalk ‘C’), then turn right onto a long stretch with no boardwalks.
The next boardwalk you reach is Boardwalk ‘D’, a long boardwalk. The
Kirtland’s Warbler was seen at the near end of this boardwalk.

I will lead a guided bird hike twice daily May 5 – 21 (fee $5), as follows:
Monday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 7:30 am & 1 p.m.; Tuesday & Thursday
7:30 a.m. & 7 p.m.

Friday 7:30 am
All of the 7:30 am and 1 pm hikes listed above meet at the Visitor Centre.
The 7 p.m. hikes meet at the entrance to the Marsh Trail.
A second hike on Friday at 1 p.m. will meet at the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons.
The Friends of Rondeau will provide a birders’ brunch for a small donation
 (coffee, tea, bagels, soups & treats) daily from 7 – 11 a.m.

Directions: from Highway 401, take exit 101 and drive South 16 km on Chatham
Kent Road 15, then turn right on Chatham Kent Road and 17 travel 1.1 km to
the park. The Bird Sightings Book, Bird Sightings Board and other relevant
information are located at the Visitor Centre (open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from
May 5 – 21). To reach the Centre from the park gate, travel 6 km South on
Rondeau Road to Gardiner Ave. and follow it around the bend to the left to
the parking lot.

[Ontbirds]Possible Eurasian Collared Dove in Guelph

2007-05-17 Thread Karl & Kathy Konze

Hi,

This morning (8:30 a.m.) I was surprised to heard a dove call that
wasn't a Mourning Dove. I heard it at the intersection of Inverness
Drive and Balmoral Drive in the northeast part of Guelph. More
specifically, it was heard calling from the backyard of the house
immediately west of the path that goes to Waverly Drive Public
School. Not knowing the calls of other dove species too well, I
wasn't sure what species it was. I did think of Eurasian Collared
Dove but as soon as I got to work, I promptly forgot to look into it
any further. Later in the afternoon (3:10 p.m.), my wife happened to
pass by the same spot and heard the bird calling again. She also saw
the bird and noted a black collar. However, she didn't have
binoculars or knew how to separate Eurasian Collared Dove from Ringed
Turtle Dove. Later still, around 6:00 p.m. I returned to the location
but heard and saw nothing.

At home I looked on the internet for sound files for the two species
but could only find one for Eurasian Collared Dove. Although my
memory is already failing me (yes, less than one day!), I would say
it was a three part song that resembled the Eurasian Collared Dove.
It didn't seem too loud but was given continuously for the several
minutes I was there. I'll have to ask my wife later what she remembered.

Anyways, perhaps someone else can be on the look out for the bird.
I'll be away this long weekend.

Good luck,

Karl Konze

would be grateful to check that out too.

In many respects, mid-May represents the peak of the birding year at
Presqu'ile Provincial Park, and the past week has been true to form.
Although plenty of birds have been seen every day, some days have been
better than others. After Tuesday's overnight rain, a fallout of
warblers and other passerine birds occurred at the lighthouse, providing
great views as the birds foraged low in the shrubbery. Perhaps visitors
to the Warblers and Whimbrels celebration this coming weekend will have
similar opportunities. If the weather permits, the bird banding
operation on Saturday and Sunday mornings near the Owen Point Trail
parking lot will allow people to have some close-up views of birds in
the hand.

Brant have been seen every day since May 13. Late Common Goldeneyes
were seen on May 12 and 14. Only one Ruddy Duck was left on May 13 of
the flock that had been present since mid-March, and recent searches
have not located any. No Red-throated Loons have been reported since
that date either.

Green Herons were seen on two different dates, and a Black-crowned
Night-Heron was at the calf pasture on May 14. An Osprey seen in the
Park on May 11 may have been one of the birds that are nesting on the
opposite side of Presqu'ile Bay. Soras were encountered on each of the
past two days. While scanning for American Bitterns on the morning of
May 11, two birders were surprised to observe a Sandhill Crane standing
in the marsh.

Shorebirds have begun to appear along the beach and on the offshore
islands. Among others, there have been up to five Black-bellied
Plovers, Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, and several Ruddy
Turnstones. Despite the advance billing provided by the Warblers and
Whimbrels title, it seems a few days early for the first Whimbrels to
appear. Both Wilson's Snipe and American Woodcock were found on May
14. Two Black Terns were at the woodpile marsh on May 16.

Usually cuckoos return to Presqu'ile before Common Nighthawks, but this
year three of the latter were seen over 83 Bayshore Road on May 15,
though none of the former have yet been seen. A Red-headed Woodpecker
was at the lighthouse on May 14, and Red-bell

Good Morning,
There has been a white dove feeding with Mourning Doves the past 2 days. Here
is a description of the dove:
- White in colour with a black neck band around the sides and back of the neck.
- Appears to be slightly larger than the Mourning Doves that it is feeding with.
- Orange/red legs with a dark coluored beak( not black).
- No other spots or markings on the head or body.
Any help in identifying this bird would be appreciated.

[Ontbirds]Eurasian Collared-Dove/Turtle Dove - Oakville

2004-07-24 Thread Enver Domingo
Hello Birders,

The mystery bird was last seen Monday evening. Unfortunately, and this is
problematic all over, a cat killed a Mourning Dove in my patio garden on that
day, and that caused all birds to be skittish in particular the Mourning Doves.
Wish owners of cats will keep them on leashes when outside so that they do not
venture into peoples gardens. Anway the bird had not been seen since until I
received an e.mail yesterday to let me know that the Dove was picked up not far
from here at a feeder. The dove was worse for wear, and the kind gentleman
phoned the Oakville Humane Society to collect it. That is where the Dove is.

Regards,

Enver Domingo.

 Good evening birders.

Today Sat., July 24, 2004 Stan Bajurny and I decided to tool around south
of Hamilton to check on the shorebird situation during a beautiful cool
summer day and we were not disappointed even though we found nothing rare or
good enough to get many birders out and about (we saw none again) but maybe
we did add to their excu oops reason I mean for waiting for something
to show up. The lagoons of course lived up to their reputation of being the
windiest place south of Hagersville. I think that sensors are set up near
the gate and as soon as Stan and I go past it the wind machines start.
During our travels we stopped at the Townsend sewage lagoons and the
following are some of the highlights.
- Lesser Yellowlegs - 225+
- Short-billed Dowitcher - 12
- Stilt Sandpiper - 1
- Solitary Sandpiper - 4
- Spotted Sandpiper - 40+
- Pectoral sandpiper - 9
- Killdeer - 150+
- Semipalmated Sandpiper - 175+
80% of these birds were in the 1st cell
Also seen were 5 male Ruddy Ducks with their striking blue bills gleaming
in the sun, 7 Green-winged Teal and in one cell in a circle of about 25ft
diameter were 16 Painted Turtles and 28 Green Frogs, all with mainly their
heads stuck out of the water amid the duckweed.

In other places along the Lake Erie north shore between Dunnville and
Selkirk we counted (or tried to) 9 Sanderling, 75+ Semipalmated Sandpipers,
40+ Killdeer, 30+ Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Semipalmated Plover, 2 Short-billed
Dowitchers, 100+ Bonaparte's Gulls, 20+ Common Terns, 20+ Forster's Terns
and 12 Caspian Terns. We also saw 2 Bald Eagles, 1 adult and one1st year
bird, 1 Osprey, one 1st year Cooper's Hawk, 16 Turkey Vultures and on the
way to Dunnville 4 N. Mockinbirds.
Two other birds of interest (to us) were 1 first year Red-shouldered Hawk
and 1 first year Red-tailed Hawk just east of Townsend sewage lagoons.

All in all a nice day of birding even though it did not consist of much
walking this time but it is always easy on me as a passenger and navigator
and we didn't do our usual Long Point route that gets me home after
midnight. This time I got home before dark and almost got lost.

PS - Has anyone checked on the Cattle Egret beside Thickson Woods ??

Directions:-
TOWNSEND SEWAGE LAGOONS

On the way down to Long Point on Hwy 6 you will pass through Hagersville and
drive towards Jarvis. Just as you approach the town of Jarvis you will see a
sign indicating "TOWNSEND" at Nanticoke Creek Parkway #69. Turn right here
and drive to the intersection with the stop signs, turn left on Keith
Richardson Parkway and drive past some park ponds on your right. Drive ahead
until you see a small children's shelter (with an air conditioner on it) on
your right at County Rd 14. This is just before you reach the abandoned
railway line (tracks removed). Turn right here onto County Rd 14. and drive
a few hundred yards and you will see a gate and sign indicating that this is
a waste treatment area.. Park well to the side of the road, do not block the
gate. If the gate is open (they are on some weekends) then do not park
directly across from the gate as the larger "Honey Trucks" need the area to
swing into and out of the entrance road.

These lagoons are USUALLY only accessible on the weekend or after 6pm duri

2004-07-18 Thread AEadie
Two photos of a Eurasian Collared-Dove in Oakville taken by Enver Domingo
can be found at
www.ofo.ca/photos

There is some discussion about whether this bird might be a Ringed
Turtle-Dove which is not a naturally occurring species, but is kept as a
pet. This bird is very pale. See the web page for more comments.

However, Eurasian Collared Doves are spreading rapidly in North America from
a base in Florida which they reached from the Carribean. I myself saw a few
in a town ( I think it was Waverley) just south west of Springfield,
Illinois in June this year. They looked and behaved very much at home.

I saw the bird this morning at 9:30 am in the same spot it was reported from
the week before. It was sitting on top of a 6 foot wooden patio fence at
the back of #92-2350 Grand Ravine Drive. The bird's plummage is worn,
primaries are pale (same colour as rest of bird). I could not see the
underparts. I did not hear it make any noise. I have seen a photo that
appears to show a grey vent as well as dark (black) markings extending down
on the outside of the outer retrices. It is considerably larger than the
nearby Mourning Doves.

Luc Fazio's directions follow and are explicit; print them out before
looking for this bird.

Directions to Eurasian Collared-Dove:
Address: back of Unit # 91, at 2350 Grand Ravine Dr.
Oakville, Ontario
{North-West of Trafalgar Rd. & Upper Middle road}

Driving directions: QEW to Trafalgar Rd.; North to Glenashton Dr.(past Upper
Middle Rd); ... turn West (Left) and follow Glenashton; turn left (south) on
Grand Ravine Dr; go to address 2350 units # 1-105

Turn right at the address.
Within 50 metres you will see a small "kiddie parkette" on the south side
with 5 parking spots and "No Soccer nor Baseball allowed" sign. Park
here and walk 20 metres into the "parkette" on the tarred path. Behind the
second porch-yard is where the Collared-Dove has been hanging after it was
released.

If parking is a problem- it may be easier to park on Grand Ravine Dr. and
walk

in from the 2350 address sign.

[Ontbirds]Eurasian Collared-Dove, in Oakville

2004-07-10 Thread Luc Fazio
Hello Ontbirders ( Hamilton and Toronto listers!!)

A Eurasian Collared-Dove has been found and is now in Oakville.
I am relaying this info with the permission of , and on behalf of, my friend
Enver Domingo.

Yesterday or Friday,Enver’s neighbour found this dove that had been injured (
by hitting a window in the Erin Mills & North Sheridan way in Southern
Mississauga) and was brought to him in Oakville.
The dove had been stunned and recovered enough ( without apparent injuries ) to
be released in Oakville.
It flew off and joined some Mourning Doves and has been hanging around Enver’s
back porch area ( thanks to his generous seeds, milk, and water that he has
offered for the bird).
The Dove was present in Enver's back porch on Saturday (late)afternoon.

People are birder friendly. However, use good ethiquette and proper decorum in
the vicinity!. Best of luck.

Eurasian Collared-Dove and young Red-necked Grebe at Bronte Harbour Sunday Aug. 3

2003-08-03 Thread Gavin Edmondstone
While checking on the Red-necked Grebe nests in Bronte Harbour Sue and I
spotted a Eurasian Collared-Dove at about 3 PM today (Sunday). We watched
the bird for about 10 minutes before it disappeared from view. We opted to
head home to get the word out rather than try to relocate the bird. The ECD
was seen near the Lighthouse Restaurant (and the grebe nests).

Just prior to seeing the ECD we were surprised to see a young (estimated 2
weeks old) Red-necked Grebe with two adults near the mouth of Bronte Creek.

There are two active grebe nests in the Outer Harbour Marina just east of
the Lighthouse Restaurant.

Directions:Exit the QEW at Bronte Rd. (Oakville) and go to the lake.

Fw: Eurasian-collared Dove - Marysville

2003-05-24 Thread Mark Cranford
Drove to Marysville today with Don Perks and John Laimey and easily found
the Eurasian-collared Dove as advertised. The bird showed up after 30
minutes of our arrival and possibly sooner. It was on the north side of the
road sitting on the wires some 2 to 3 hundred feet east of the church close
to the house on the north side of the road.

At Presquille we found two Red Knots on Beach 4 and very little else. No
 White-winged Dove however.

After this we drove to Second Marsh and found at least 95 Whimbrel in the
marsh, a Clay-colored Sparrow in the fields close to the viewing platform
and many, many singing Willow Flycatchers.

Take 401 Hwy to exit 566 and go south on Hwy 49 (less than 1 Km) to Old Hwy
2 and then right on Hwy 2, for 2.7 km. to the Marysville Catholic Church.

Eurasian Collared-Dove still in Marysville

I saw the Eurasian Collared-Dove in Marysville this morning May 16 at
10:30. It was sitting on wires across the highway from the church. It took
5 minutes for it to find me. The bird was silent. I did not see it fly in
or leave. Field marks beauties (undertail and vent). It was immaculate. The
priest waved.

Take 401 Hwy to exit 566 and go south on Hwy 49 (less than 1 Km) to Old Hwy

The Eurasian Collared Dove was observed on Friday, May 9th from 11:45 until
about 12:40 p.m. It vocalized with repeats of its three-note call on five
or six occasions while atop the telephone pole just west of the blue house.
Once it vocalized from atop the chimney of the blue house. It flew
several times between three sites: the top chimney of the blue house, on
the telphone pole cross piece, and in the willow trees which are adjcent to
a large, grey metal shed [west of the blue house]. On one occasion, it
carried a small twig from beneath one of the willows up to the top of blue
house's chimney. Three times it sat [huddled down as if it were resting or
sitting on a nest] on the telephone pole cross piece for about five minutes
each time. Take 401 Hwy to exit 566 and go south on Hwy 49 to Old Hwy 2 and
then right on Hwy 2, for 2.7 km. to the
Marysville Catholic Church, parking lot, and school [on your right]. The
blue house is across Hwy 2 from the school.

Eurasian Collared-Dove in Marysville

2003-05-09 Thread Florence Jerome
The Eurasian Collared-Dove was seen this am at 10:15 and still there at
10:45 when we left. It was first spotted on the transformer in front of the
blue house on n. side just before the R.C. church. It moved across the road
and back. It seems comfortable there.

Directions Take 401 to Marysville exit. Go south to old Hwy 2, then west to
the R.C. church with golf course across from it.

Eurasian Collared Dove, May 8th, Marysville

2003-05-08 Thread lpaul
Alfred Adamo and myself just had excellent views of the eurasian collared
dove at 11:25 a.m. this morning, Thursday, May 8th. It was still there when
we left at 11:55 a.m. This is the bird that has been reported these last
few days. It landed on the Roman Catholic Church Rectory chimney and we
first discovered it on the north side of Hwy. #2 on the chimney of the blue
house just east of the Church. It also perched for an extended period on
the transformer on the telephone pole across from the church.
Take the 401 to the Marysville exit, 20 minutes east of Belleville, go south
to Hwy#2 and then turn right (west) and you will quickly come to the church.
Alfred had been there at 9a.m and the bird showed up at 11:25.

Eurasian Collared Dove - Marysville

2003-05-05 Thread Bruce Ripley
EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE first observed at 9:30a.m. in the area of the
Marysville Church on highway 2. It was seen on top of the church and on top
of the house just west of the church and was seen twice on the north side of
the highway on the hydro lines as well as the spruce trees at the house
across from the church. It was later relocated at 10:30a.m. with Albert
Boisvert. The bird called frequently.
Also birded Carden Plain, but Mother Nature prevented the YELLOW RAILS from
calling. Did hear 2 SEDGE WRENS though.

Take 401 Hwy to exit 566 and go south on Hwy 49 to Old Hwy 2 and then right
on Hwy 2, for 2.7 km. to the
Marysville Catholic Church.

>From Kirkfield on Highway 48 east of Lake Simcoe, proceed north on County
Road 6. At 2.6 km past the Kirkfield Lift Lock, turn right (east) on McNamee
Road where County Road 6 turns sharply to the left. Then turn left almost
immediately on Wylie Road. Proceed north.
