Re: [Blackbelly] Sheep slobber
I have long suspected that these things I call ABB sheep are actually pigs in disguise. When I offer my feed mix (corn + oats + soybean meal + DE - wetted) they bump and shove at the trough and gulp it down as fast as they can - somethimes choking in the process. When they start choking, they back off, slober and shake their heads and jump around until they clear their air passage. Then, they are right back at it. There are one or two that just don't seem to learn. [Blackbelly] Blackbellies: slobbering, drooling and shaking their heads when eating
We can definitely relate to the sheep slobbering and shaking while eating. A couple years ago we changed feed stores and the brand of sheep cubes which we feed our sheep here in Texas. (These cubes were much cheaper!) We had them jumping, slobbering, foaming, shaking and several even passed out. We discovered the 1/2 sheep cubes were too soft; they pigged out and got choked. We had to even revive a couple. Needless to say we changed feed stores and brands of sheep cubes and haven't had that trouble again. Also at the time we noticed there was not problem with them eating grass. Hello, some of my sheep slobber/drool, shake their heads, and jump sometimes when they are eating sheep feed. Not all of my sheep do this. Does anyone know why this behavior is occurring? Is this the symptom of a problem? I do not notice it when they are eating grass. I feed from a trough and fill it by hand and if your sheep are like mine, they are all worried they are not going to get their fair share. the ones that really scarf it down have to pause sometimes and they shake their heads up and down real fast, trying to get the dry feed to clear their throats, the reason I mention this is that sometimes I do notice them drool a little when they do this, I don't know if there is a gag reflex thing going on or what but they go right back to eating. [Blackbelly] choked sheep
If your feed has whole oats they could be choking on it. We have had them gobble down feed with alot of oats and the little burr on it sticks in their throat. They drool and choke and jump. I did loose one young one who foamed and I couldn't do a thing for it. It got the foam in its lungs and died. Sheep are gobble guts so you really have to watch what you feed.
