We had a ewe get caught in the crook of a small tree last week. Didn't see any broken skin, so we gave her 2 shots/pumps of nutri-drench and rubbed her leg real good to get circulation back in it. But she would drag her leg as if it were broken. I had my husband put a salve of lard and hot peppers (ground) on her leg, not much though, to get the circulation going the next day. She got 2 more doses of nutri-drench. Her hip and leg all the way to the ankle/hoof seemed to be fine, but she was losing weight badly. So it was, open the mouth, put in some grain and make her eat it. We really thought she was a gonner. Yesterday she would put her hoof down and sort of wobble it back and forth, but wouldn't put any weight on it. Today she is standing with some weight on it, but not walking on it. My neighbor said even though sheep and goats are smart in some ways, they are very dumb in others. If they get hurt, they can just give up,( because of being trapped in the JAWS of the PREDATOR), they think they are dying. She so far is doing better by the day. If this keeps up she will be put back out with the rest of the flock in 4-5 days. If she is eating and drinking she will probably be walking OK in about a week. The penicillin is a good idea. An anti-inflammatory such as 1cc of Banamine per day until acting normal would help. Dexamethasone is a steroid and anti-inflammatory that also works well (.5CC TO 2CC). Dexamethasone really makes a injured sheep feel much better. IMPORTANT Dexamethasone is also used to induce labor so DO NOT use if the ewe is pregnant! Also, Dexamethasone reduces the immune system so do not use if an active infection or fever is present. Thanks Nancy I had something similar happen to a goat last week. After I freed her, I popped a couple chewable baby aspirin in her mouth, and she was feeling a lot better shortly. It wouldn't be a bad idea to try relieving the pain. YEAH!! I like sheep with attitude! Those that have the fight in them do seem to survive better than the others. Good advice Cecil, I should have said that! I have only used one or the other. Also, I feel it is important to only give medicine if the sheep really needs it and to discontinue medication as soon as possible. I usually discontinue medication as soon as the sheep decides to join the living! The more the sheep fights me the sooner I quit the medication. It is most disheartening when a sheep no longer cares what happens to them. Every medication has a good and bad side to them so use with care.
